Films like this make me glad I don’t need to give a star rating. Because films like Blade Runner 2049 – and there aren’t many of them – take time to absorb, to fully comprehend. It’s a most unlikely mega-budget blockbuster: slow and long and extravagantly cerebral; the absolute antidote to YouTube instant reaction culture. Give me another 35 years and I might have finally made up my mind.
Where the 2019-set Blade Runner was a hardboiled noir in future-gothic clothing, Blade Runner 2049, its direct sequel, is an exacting detective procedural sketched on a desolate canvas. Except both those descriptions are hopelessly reductive, which is precisely what makes both films stand out amongst their peers. There’s so much going on here, so mesmerising in its execution,...

The subject of “Blade Runner” never came up during any of cinematographer Roger Deakins’ discussions with director Denis Villeneuve about the sequel, “Blade Runner 2049.” Although the two movies obviously share the same world, and there’s a mysterious connection between Ryan Gosling’s K and Harrison Ford’s Deckard (current and former L.A. blade runner detectives) when the story picks up 30 years later, the only thing that mattered to Deakins was grounding the lighting in reality. Which makes perfect sense: he’s the master of naturalism and “Blade Runner” was grounded in expressionism.
“It was more of a film noir detective story, but we just went by our script,” said Deakins. “We needed to get the settings straight and then storyboarded it all for the concepts of the world and the spaces.”
However, the one imperative that Montreal native Villeneuve stressed was snow. “Right from the get-go, Denis said,...

Then wariness turned to excitement with the news that visionary Quebecois director Denis Villeneuve (Sicario, Arrival) would be behind the camera and Blade Runner star Harrison Ford would return to reprise his role as Replicant hunter (a.k.a. blade runner) Rick Deckard. The ribbon wrapping up this cinematic gift was the casting of Canadian star Ryan Gosling in the lead role of Lapd Officer K,...
