Animated TV series, Jem a.k.a. Jem and the Holograms, premiered in 1985 and ran in first-run syndication, for 65 episodes, until it was cancelled in 1988. In the cartoon, Starlight Music owner Jerrica Benton fights to keep evil co-owner Eric Raymond from seizing full control of her late father's company, which Jerrica uses to support orphans. With the help of her star-shaped earrings -- which give her access to the holographic computer, Synergy -- Jerrica assumes her alter-ego, Jem, lead singer of the Holograms. Jem and the Holograms compete against Raymond's rocking rebel girl band, the Misfits, while protecting the Synergy technology and thwarting Raymond's nefarious takeover schemes.

If you grew up in the 80s, chances are you rocked out at least a few times to the “Jem” theme song. You probably even pretended your earrings could transform you from a high-powered businesswoman into an international rock star. If think pieces want to know why late Gen-x/early Millennial women think they can have it all, look no further than this cartoon. Why choose one career when you could have Both? Capitalizing on the nostalgia boom currently in progress, Universal Pictures and Hasbro have teamed up to bring a live-action, updated Jem, Kimber, Aja, and Shana to the big screen. The above photo is actually from the fantastic new Idw comic by Kelly Thompson and Ross Campbell. These are the actual official photos from Jem’s live-action reboot. Image Credit: Universal...

Jem and the Holograms are truly outrageous again as the popular cartoon series makes its debut on DVD in a complete series set from Shout! Factory.
Before there was Hannah Montana, Jem was the original double life rock star. The basic story revolved around record producer Jerrica Benton and her alter-ego Jem, who Jerrica became after pressing one of her magical earrings provided by Synergy, a holographic computer program/synthesizer that her late father built. Joining Jem in her adventures was her band mates Aja, Shana, and her little sister Kimber. Jerrica's boyfriend Rio was also along for the ride most of the time, but had no clue that Jem and Jerrica was the same person.
As with any cartoon, there has to be a foil for our main "heroes," and that duty was given to the rival band The Misfits, which managed to sabotage Jem and the Holograms in...

Perhaps it is elitist of me to feel badly for kids these days and the quality of television programming available to them, but I don't mind being thought a snob. I am the older sister to much younger siblings (my youngest sister, Noa, was born the day after I went to prom), so I've been privy to experience everything from the best: Arthur and Spongebob Squarepants; to the worst: Pretty much everything else.
My sister is old enough to know better now, but i've got two young nieces to worry about and a whole world of pop culture to introduce them to. Thankfully, someone in power must've had a child, seen the abysmal choices and decided to do something about it. As of yesterday, I am so happy to say, I can share the greatness of Jem and The Holograms (and those hot bitches The Misfits) with a whole new generation.
