André Braugher has died. The two-time Emmy-winning star of series including Homicide: Life on the Street, Men of a Certain Age and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was 61.
Braugher, whose first film role came alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington in the Ed Zwick-directed Glory, died Monday after a brief illness.
While Braugher peppered his résumé with comedies, many will remember him for his ferocious portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Put him in “the box,” sweating out and outsmarting crime suspects in the interrogation room, and you were looking at a weekly dose of tour de force acting, as good as it got on television during that time. He won an Emmy for that show he starred in from 1992-98. His wife, Ami Brabson, recurred as Pembleton’s wife on Homicide.

Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous “I have a dream” speech at the landmark 1963 March on Washington, but that momentous event was organized, and even was conceived, by another Civil Rights figure who is far less well-known: Bayard Rustin. The reason why you may not know Bayard Rustin is that in addition to being a fiery Civil Right organizer he was also a gay Black man, in an earlier homophobic time when even hinting someone was gay could unleashed a firestorm that might end a career, or a movement, or even led to arrest.

Colman Domingo plays civil rights activist Bayard Rustin, an organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, in the Netflix film Rustin. Domingo said he felt a responsibility to introduce Rustin to modern audiences.
“It was a great calling honestly,” Domingo said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles event. “History put him in the darkness because he was so full in his experience in the world and that was a challenge to many folks. So I knew this was an opportunity to pull him out of the shadows.”
Domingo said he suspects the reason Rustin is not as well-known historically as Martin Luther King, Jr. is because Rustin was gay. Domingo himself remembered discovering Rustin at 19 at his school’s African American Student Union.
“Then I questioned my whole education because I didn’t know about him,” Domingo said. “It made me realize I need to interrogate my history at all...

George C. Wolfe’s 2023 film, Rustin is a biographical drama based on America’s most unsung hero, Bayard Rustin, who was a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement. Along with A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin was key individuals behind the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, igniting the revolution against discrimination based on race, sex, color, and religion. The film masterfully recreated some of the iconic historical moments and even used the famous quotes of these key figures, but it also took some creative liberties for dramatic purposes as well as to showcase the struggles in Bayard Rustin’s life. The makers took some creative liberties in depicting Rustin’s love life by creating two of the most pivotal characters in the storyline. One of them was a young student who fell in love with Rustin and lived with him during the time when he was planning a march,...

Although Colman Domingo’s spent three decades in the entertainment industry, with title roles in the theater, he says he’s been sidelined in film and television. He played a trombonist in Chadwick Boseman’s final film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom; counselor to Zendaya’s troubled Rue in Euphoria; a violent, turn-on-a-dime pimp in Zola, and the father to a wrongly accused Harlem artist (Stephen James) in If Beale Street Could Talk.

The 1963 March on Washington did not merely come together on its own via a whim, a wish, and good will. It took years of strategizing, planning, building coalitions, dodging bureaucratic obstacles and opponents both within and outside the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. Students and veteran activists worked phone lines, sweated over the details (how many latrines do we need? how many can we get?), and sought out allies of all stripes from across the country. What happened on that hot day in the District of Columbia on August 28th was...

The 1963 March on Washington, best remembered for Martin Luther King Jr.’s rousing “I Have a Dream” speech, drew 250,000 people to the capital to rally for racial equality. But director George C.Wolfe hopes to right a different wrong in Rustin, this superbly cast movie about Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo), the veteran civil rights activist who co-conceived the massive peaceful protest and miraculously brought it together in eight weeks. The film follows Rustin as he works to enlist mainstream activist leaders such as NAACP chief Roy Wilkins (Chris Rock), who spurned the idea of Rustin, a self-declared gay man, as the project’s public face. Respected union leader A. Philip Randolph (Glynn Turman), who devised the march with Rustin, is anointed official director instead. But Rustin keeps on, recruiting religious groups, educators and unions to back the project, and an army of volunteers to coordinate buses, trains and planes to transport marchers to D.

Colman Domingo is demanding the spotlight for his next film role. The "Candyman" and "Euphoria" actor portrays queer civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in Netflix's upcoming biopic, "Rustin." Per the streamer, the movie will chronicle Rustin's rise as the "architect of 1963's momentous March on Washington," where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech. According to the movie's trailers, which arrived on Aug. 28 and Oct. 19, "Rustin" is also expected to spotlight some of the obstacles the titular figure faced during his lifetime, including police brutality and criticism over his sexuality.
Rustin, known as one of the greatest organizers in history, "challenged authority, never apologized for who he was, what he believed, or who he desired," per Netflix. And though he made history, the influential figure's accomplishments have seemingly been forgotten - until now.

Plot: The true story of civil rights icon Bayard Rustin (Colman Domingo), who never got his due as one of the key figures behind the 1964 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
Review: Bayard Rustin is a name that, until recently, wasn’t uttered with the same reverence afforded to his fellow giants of the civil rights movement. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama, who’s also one of the producers of this reverent biopic, which aims to make Rustin’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement more widely known.
Indeed, Rustin was an outlier in the party. As an openly gay man, he was the subject of rumours and innuendoes, making his role in the movement more behind the scenes, although his powers of persuasion and genius at organization proved invaluable. Gregory C. Wolfe’s film should be required viewing for anyone interested in that period,...

It’s not easy to upstage Martin Luther King Jr., but that’s exactly what leading man Colman Domingo does in “Rustin,” a movie named for the civil rights pioneer who gave King the platform to speak his most famous four words: “I have a dream.” That day, Aug. 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the man standing slightly out of focus over King’s right shoulder — quite literally, his right-hand man — was one Bayard Rustin. It was he who conceived and organized what King called “the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation,” the March on Washington.
While widely recognized for his contributions to the civil rights movement (and posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Barack Obama), Rustin is hardly the household name one might assume from his achievements — and worse still, he was nearly elbowed out of history altogether on account of his homosexuality.

For the most part, George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin” is every bit as broad and garish as you might expect from an awards-baiting Netflix biopic. The fact that this movie about a grievously unsung hero of America’s civil rights movement comes from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions may only add to the impression of a movie that thinks of itself as a means to an end (even if Higher Ground has maintained a rather impeccable track record thus far). But it’s also hard to get too bent out of shape about it when those ends include “winning Colman Domingo an Oscar, shining a light on the semi-forgotten gay Black man who organized the March on Washington,...

Iconic actor, musician, and lifelong activist Harry Belafonte has died at the age of 96. The cause, per his longtime spokesman Ken Sunshine, was congestive heart failure.
Belafonte’s singing shaped a musical consciousness for generations of Americans, from traditional folk music and spirituals to Caribbean calypso and protest songs. His acting in films such as “Carmen Jones” and “Odds Against Tomorrow” won praise and helped pave the way for Black performers who would follow. And his activism took him to the front lines of the civil rights movement, where he marched with Martin Luther King Jr., lobbied for the release of an imprisoned Nelson Mandela, and joined other stars to raise money for famine relief on the African continent. Realizing from an early age the power of celebrity to advance social change, Belafonte was among the rare few to have been equally entrenched in the worlds of entertainment and politics with genuine results to spare.

In Universal’s She Said, Andre Braugher plays real-life journalist Dean Baquet, the former executive editor of The New York Times who helped spearhead the paper’s investigation into Harvey Weinstein. While this is the first time the actor has played a historical figure who is still alive (he previously portrayed Jackie Robinson and labor unionist A. Philip Randolph, for example), Braugher didn’t feel he had to meet Baquet to capture the spirit of the editor.
“Sometimes when you’re playing real people, there’s a tendency to get stuck on their real mannerisms, and what you imagine their real attitudes are as opposed to the script, and I think my highest loyalty goes to the playwright [Rebecca Lenkiewicz, who penned the screenplay] in collaboration with the director to find out what it is that we want to try to play,” Braugher tells THR.

“We can’t comprehend legal movements for justice without understanding Pauli’s role in them,” Chase Strangio, an ACLU attorney, declares partway through “My Name Is Pauli Murray.” This idea reverberates throughout the stirring documentary, which takes a much-needed deep dive into the life and work of Pauli Murray, a highly influential attorney and activist. Using a combination of archival footage, Murray’s own autobiographical words, and interviews with contemporary thinkers, the documentary begins with Murray’s early life and then continues on to chronicle their brilliant legal contributions and trailblazing activism.
In addition to their career as a lawyer, Murray was a gender rights advocate, a poet, the first Black non-male person to be ordained an Episcopal priest, and even a one-time Mademoiselle magazine “Woman of the Year.” Many of Murray’s beliefs and ideals were considered radical at the time, but they blazed on, and in doing so...
