Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy Webs Up a New Streaming Home in the New Year
Image
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off the lengthy franchise, Sam Raimi helmed three Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire as the popular web-slinger. Now, the trilogy is swinging to a different streaming home.

Sony purchased the rights to Spider-Man in 1999, who has become the most successful character in the industry since. The studio reached a deal with Disney in 2016 to allow the character to enter the MCU, but Sony still maintains the rights. Sam Raimi's trilogy will be heading to Netflix starting Jan. 1, per the streamer's confirmation, based on Sony and Netflix's deal.

Josh Ruben shares his pitch for a Darkman legacy sequel
Image
Last month, the directing duo of Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, who worked with the legendary Sam Raimi on episodes of the Raimi-produced anthology series 50 States of Fright and on the thriller Don’t Move, said that they would like to revive Darkman, the superhero action franchise that Raimi started with his 1990 film of the same name. I said at the time that if Schindler and Netto want to make a Darkman movie, they might have to duel Scare Me and Werewolves Within director Josh Ruben over the project, as Ruben is such a Darkman superfan that he even recorded a fan commentary for a Scream Factory 4K and Blu-ray release… and now, Ruben has taken to social media to share his pitch for a Darkman legacy sequel.

Scripted by Sam Raimi with Chuck Pfarrer, Ivan Raimi, Daniel Goldin, and Joshua Goldin, the original Darkman has the following synopsis: When the laboratory of Dr.

The directing duo of Adam Schindler and Brian Netto have worked with the legendary Sam Raimi on episodes of the Raimi-produced anthology series 50 States of Fright and on the thriller Don’t Move, which recently received a successful release through the Netflix streaming service – and while talking to The Hollywood Reporter, they revealed that there are a couple of projects where they’d like to follow in Raimi’s footsteps. For one thing, they would like to revive Darkman, the superhero action franchise that Raimi started with his 1990 film of the same name. They also want to make a Spider-Man movie, but the Spider-Man they want to bring to the screen is Miles Morales.

Scripted by Sam Raimi with Chuck Pfarrer, Ivan Raimi, Daniel Goldin, and Joshua Goldin, Darkman has the following synopsis: When the laboratory of Dr. Peyton Westlake is blown up by gangsters, he is burned beyond recognition.

10 Horror Movies That Were Clearly Inspired By Night Of The Living Dead
Image
George A. Romero is considered by many to be the Godfather of the horror movie monster, zombies. Though the term was used before, it was not until Night of the Living Dead in 1968 that it began to take shape in the way many know it today. It marked a shift in the cultural landscape of horror movies, where most of the contributions were B movies designed to make audiences laugh at ridiculous monsters and over-the-top performances.

Most of the rules surrounding zombies were established in this first outing, with many filmmakers maintaining these self-evident laws of the walking dead. However, not every horror film is a zombie film, and there were still many different aspects in Night of the Living Dead that paved the way for future horror classics. From introducing social commentary to a genre that hadn't used it before, to a drastic increase in the level of graphic violence seen on screen.

Doctor Strange 2 Star In Talks To Reunite With Sam Raimi For His First Horror Movie In 15 Years
Image
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness star Rachel McAdams is currently in talks to join Sam Raimis Send Help. Serving as his first return to the horror genre since 2009s Drag Me To Hell, Raimi first boarded the project as director and producer back in July 2024. McAdams first collaborated with Raimi on 2022s Doctor Strange sequel, reprising her previous Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Benedict Cumberbatchs unrequited love interest, Dr. Christine Palmer.

Per Deadline, McAdams is currently in discussions to star in Raimis Send Help from 20th Century Studios. However, reports suggest that negotiations are still only in very early stages, and nothing has been finalized yet. Based on a script penned by Baywatch screenwriters Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, Send Help is described as a two-handed horror-thriller set on an island. The films story has been compared to Rob Reiners 1990 adaptation of Stephen Kings Misery and the Tom Hanks...

10 Gritty, Brooding Revenge Movies If You Love The Crow
Image
This article contains mention of violence and assault.

Both versions of The Crow focus on the origin story of Eric Draven. He is a man who rises from the dead to take his revenge, similar to the many other revenge movies that follow this formula. The 2024 The Crow is not a remake of the original but expands upon the narrative laid out by the comic book series. Source material like the comic book serves as inspiration for the brooding vengeance films within this niche. While stories of revenge have been popular since the beginning of the film, The Crow exemplifies what the genre does best.

Nothing about either version of The Crow is flat or bland, as even within the moody palate, it remains dynamic.

It stands apart because of how dark and gritty the action and aesthetic of the project are. However, nothing about either version of The Crow is flat or bland,...

Sam Raimi's next film described as Misery meets Castaway
Image
Sam Raimi is reportedly set to direct his first feature film since helming the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022. His next film, titled Send Help, is being described as a story that falls "somewhere between Rob Reiner's Stephen King adaptation Misery and Robert Zemeckis' classic Castaway," says Deadline.

It should be noted that Send Help, which is in development at 20th Century Studios, has not been officially greenlit yet. Raimi's last original horror movie was the 2009 film Drag Me to Hell, which he also wrote the screenplay for with his brother Ivan Raimi. Since then, he's also continued working on the super successful Evil Dead franchise, which he jumpstarted with the original 1981 film.

Decades later, and Evil Dead is still going strong, with the latest entry Evil Dead Rise raking in over $147 million at the box office. Raimi also developed the spinoff television series Ash vs.

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Image
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.

Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Greatest Superhero Movie Directors
Image
Though superhero movies may be entering a decline from relying on more of the same, many directors have since left strong impressions on the genre. Between publishers like Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse, there is a slew of imaginative characters — hero, villain, and otherwise — that these filmmakers managed to adapt to the big screen successfully.

In one way or another, these larger-than-life figures were tastefully recontextualized for general moviegoing audiences while largely satisfying fans of the source material. From creatives like Sam Raimi putting Spider-Man on the theatrical map and Christopher Nolan redeeming Batman's mainstream reputation, the superhero genre has enjoyed some especially talented directors.

Army of Darkness is Finally Getting A Sequel To Its Deleted Twist Ending
Image
Dynamite Entertainment is bringing back the beloved Ash Williams to revisit the world of the Evil Dead by expanding on Army of Darkness' alternate ending. Dynamite Entertainment is no stranger to the Evil Dead universe, as the first comic book series it published happened to be Army of Darkness. What followed was a bevy of in-universe crossovers like Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash, Marvel Zombies Vs. The Army of Darkness, and last year's The Army of Darkness Vs. Re-Animator: Necronomicon Rising.

Now, according to Bleeding Cool, Dynamite Entertainment will be releasing Army of Darkness Forever by Tony Fleecs and Justin Greenwood. The series will serve as a direct sequel to Army of Darkness, but specifically to the alternate ending that never made it to theaters. Army of Darkness Forever #1 is currently expected to release in October 2023. Covers and variant cover art from Cover art by Francesco Mattina, Arthur Suydam, and...

Evil Dead Finally Proved The Franchise Doesn't Need Ash (But Still Needs Bruce Campbell)
Image
The Evil Dead franchise came back to life one more time thanks to Evil Dead Rise, which proved that the franchise doesn’t need Ash Williams anymore, but it definitely needs Bruce Campbell. Back in 1981, Sam Raimi brought the supernatural horror movie The Evil Dead, marking his feature directorial debut. The Evil Dead was the beginning of a horror franchise formed by a total of five movies (including two reboots), a TV series, video games, comic books, and more, most of them following the adventures of the franchise’s Final Boy, Ash Williams.

The Evil Dead followed a group of five college students who travel to an isolated cabin in the woods. After playing a mysterious tape found in the cabin, they unleash a legion of demons and spirits, who end up possessing most of the group. Ash is the last one standing, and he continued fighting these evil forces...

Think Spider-Man 3 Was Bad? The Original Plan Would've Been So Much Worse
Image
Although Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was key in developing the superhero genre as it is now known, not all its entries were a hit, and Spider-Man 3 is considered the weakest link, but its original plan would have made it even worse. After a long wait, Spider-Man finally made his big screen debut in 2002 in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, with Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, and it explored his origin story and his battles against his very first enemy: Norman Osborn a.k.a. the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). The success of Spider-Man made way for two sequels, though not all of them matched the success and quality of the first movie.

Spider-Man 2 saw the title character facing Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), and it’s considered not only the best movie in Raimi’s trilogy but also one of the greatest superhero movies ever made, but unfortunately, Spider-Man 3...

Bruce Campbell Explains Why He Prefers The Army Of Darkness Original Ending [Exclusive]
Image
We already knew that Bruce Campbell prefers the original "Army of Darkness" ending, but /Film writer Danielle Ryan recently spoke with him to learn exactly why. The different final scenes have often been the subject of debate amongst "Evil Dead" fans. For the 30th anniversary of "Army of Darkness," the /Film staff even offered their opinions on each ending.

On the one hand, there's the theatrical ending that Campbell dislikes. In the final scene, Ash returns to the housewares department at S-Mart and brags about his adventures in medieval times. When a raging Deadite unleashes hell in the store, Ash saves the day with his boomstick and plants a big, victorious kiss on his co-worker Jenny. In this triumphant moment, /Film's defense argues, "Ash fully embraces the flawed hero he was always meant to be. The threat hasn't disappeared, yet he's ready for it. It shows his growth over the course of the three films.

Army of Darkness (1992) – Celebrating 30 years of the Sam Raimi classic
Image
On February 19, 1993, the third entry in director Sam Raimi‘s Evil Dead franchise – Army of Darkness (watch it Here) – reached theatres. Bruce Campbell's Dad Is In Every Cut Of Army Of Darkness
Image
As many of the film's fans know, Sam Raimi's slapstick medieval horror comedy "Army of Darkness" was not a hit upon its release in North American release in February of 1993. The film's budget was a modest 11 million, and it made only 21 million worldwide, little enough to be considered a bomb. After the film's release on VHS, however, a cult audience swiftly began to amass around it. If you were in high school in 1993, one might hear lines of Sam and Ivan Raimi's screenplay shouted randomly in hallways, each one a cult password for horror nuts in the crowd. It wasn't long thereafter that "Army of Darkness" began rounding the midnight movie circuit. It has been a mainstay in pop culture ever since.

Or, to paraphrase lead actor Bruce Campbell in his biography "If Chin Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor," a blockbuster is when a million people see a movie ten times.

How “Ash vs. Evil Dead” Proved ‘Evil Dead’ Is the Gift That Keeps on Giving [TV Terrors]
Image
Groovy! For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Ash vs. Evil Dead“, the three-season television series that aired on the Starz Network from 2015 through 2018.

One of the most sobering moments of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” came in the original introduction by franchise star Bruce Campbell, who explained that the series was made because fans wouldn’t shut up. Indeed, fans had been asking for years for another adventure with Ashley Williams after Army of Darkness, and the team finally obliged in 2015. The climate was right for the return of the Evil Dead at the time as studios and television networks were investing in horror series. Developed by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy, Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead” wasn’t just a dry run for fans. The series was a return to form for the Evil Dead series, one that never betrayed its source material...

Evil Dead Rise Trailer: The Deadites Are Back In A Whole New Location
Image
For the first time in nearly a decade, a new "Evil Dead" movie is on the way. "Evil Dead Rise" officially has a first trailer, which means it's a real movie, which is still hard to believe after years of sequel discussions and rumors. Writer-director Lee Cronin has assured fans that the film will exist in the same universe as the original Sam Raimi classic, featuring buckets of blood and plenty of Deadites — despite the fact that, according to early synopsis from Deadline, it's moving the action from a secluded cabin setting to a Los Angeles apartment.

Ahead of the trailer's release, word was that "Evil Dead Rise" wouldn't feature some of the franchise fixtures Raimi fans know and love, like Bruce Campbell's Ash or Raimi himself behind the camera. But both Raimi and Campbell are producing along with Ghost House Pictures co-founder Rob Tapert, meaning the new flick...

In Praise Of Ted Raimi, The Other Raimi
Sam Raimi at an event for Spider-Man 2 (2004)
First, a confession: This article's headline is a little inaccurate. We're actually going to talk about the two other Raimis who've led fruitful careers in showbiz, in addition to director Sam Raimi.

The first of them, Ivan Raimi, is a physician who co-wrote "Darkman," "Army of Darkness," "Spider-Man 3," and "Drag Me to Hell," all of which were directed by his brother Sam. Ivan and Sam Raimi also co-created the action-adventure series "Spy Game" and helped develop the TV show "Ash vs. Evil Dead," on top of penning a trio of episodes for the horror anthology series "50 States of Fright." Ivan Raimi's body of work is a bit limited...

‘Ash vs. Evil Dead: The Complete Series’ Blu-ray Review
For horror fans, especially the ones who love Evil Dead, there has always been the dream of seeing Bruce Campbell return in another film. Yet with the Evil Dead remake by Fede Alvarez hope was somewhat lost… That was until the announcement that Ash vs Evil Dead, a television series based on the original trilogy, was coming.

Bringing back Bruce Campbell as Ash, and with the involvement of Sam and Ivan Raimi it was something of a dream come true for fans. That is of course, if they didn’t take a mis-step and ruin the big return of such a favourite character. Thankfully this isn’t the case, and Ash vs Evil Dead is something very special. And, for me, the fact that Lucy Lawless has been included in the cast just seals the deal. I’m a big Evil Dead fan, and I loved Xena too so the...

‘Ash vs. Evil Dead’ Canceled After 3 Seasons on Starz
Starz has canceled the horror-comedy series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” after three seasons, the network announced on Friday.

The upcoming season 3 finale, set to air Sunday, April 29, will now serve as the series finale.

The decision comes as Starz prepares to launch two new series next month, the Mexican-American family drama “Vida” and “Sweetbitter,” an adaptation of the 2016 Stephanie Danler novel about the New York City restaurant industry.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” starred Bruce Campbell — reprising his role as Ash Williams from the “Evil Dead” film franchise — alongside Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo. “Evil Dead” filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert served as executive producers on the series alongside Campbell, Ivan Raimi and Rick Jacobson. Mark Verheiden was showrunner with producer Moira Grant.

Campbell and Raimi first teamed up for the original 1981 film “The Evil Dead.” Shot on a shoestring budget of approximately $350,000 in the woods of Tennessee, the film went on to gross over $2.4 million worldwide and achieved cult status.

The duo later reteamed for a series of sequels and a 2013 reboot before the TV series follow-up “Ash vs. Evil Dead” debuted on Starz in 2015 to critical acclaim.
