Elvis Presley’s mother died shortly before the father of his friend, Red West. Both men returned to Memphis to mourn their parents. West said that the loss of Gladys Presley was extremely hard on Elvis given the closeness of their relationship. Still, Elvis made a point to be there to support West in his grief.

Elvis Presley‘s “In the Ghetto” is more of a song about poverty than a song about a mom. However, Elvis’ mother, Gladys Presley, was one of the inspirations behind the track. The writer of “In the Ghetto” explained how the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll changed the song’s lyrics for the better.
Elvis Presley’s girlfriend interpreted ‘In the Ghetto’ as being about Elvis’ mom
Linda Thompson is a songwriter who was Elvis’ girlfriend between 1972 and 1976. In her 2016 book A Little Thing Called Life, Thompson discussed “In the Ghetto. “The definitive version was, of course, recorded by Elvis, who could sing it with such authority and feeling because he had lived in the ghetto,” she wrote. “He’d experienced firsthand the desperation and injustice of that kind of life.

Elvis Presley‘s “In the Ghetto” is one of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s most famous songs, so it’s difficult to imagine a world where another singer released it first. The writer of the song debunked a rumor that the tune was originally meant for Sammy Davis Jr. He also revealed why he thought the track would have worked for Davis. In contrast, one of Elvis’ girlfriends recalled Davis getting offered the song first.
The writer of Elvis Presley’s ‘In the Ghetto’ wanted Sammy Davis Jr. to sing it
Mac Davis was the writer behind several Elvis songs, including “A Little Less Conversation” and “In the Ghetto.” During a 2010 interview with Smashing Interviews Magazine, he was asked if the rumor was true that he originally pitched the track to Sammy. “That’s not true,” he said. “I took it to Sammy later.

In 1955, Elvis Presley’s career was heating up, and his new record label gave him a bonus that proved his promise as an artist. RCA Victor bought Elvis’ contract for an unprecedented sum, considerably padding the singer’s pockets. He used his bonus on his mother, Gladys Presley.
Elvis purchased a gift for his mother with his record label bonus
Elvis had an incredibly close relationship with his mother. He spent most of his time with her while growing up and dreamed of a day when he could provide for her and his father.
“Elvis would hear us worrying about our debts, being out of work and sickness,” Gladys said in the book Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick, “and he’d say, ‘Don’t you worry none, Baby. When I grow up, I’m going to buy you a fine house and pay...

One of Elvis Presley’s longtime friends and bodyguards got to know the singer’s family well over the years. West worked as Elvis’ bodyguard long before the singer had the need or means to hire more people. His parents were glad about this. According to West, they seemed to have the psychic ability to tell when Elvis was in trouble. Elvis shared similar abilities.
Elvis’ friend and bodyguard thought the Presley family had psychic power
West began working with Elvis early in his career. He grew used to dragging Elvis out of mobs of fans and other sticky situations. He also grew used to Elvis’ mother’s seemingly psychic ability to know when her son was in danger.
“There was always something very eerie about the things she would say like she was psychic or something like it,” West said in the book Elvis: What Happened? by Steve Dunleavy.

Elvis Presley‘s “Hound Dog” is one of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll‘s biggest songs. He still got sick of it. Priscilla Presley gave fans insight into Elvis’ state of mind after they divorced. She also revealed how Elvis’ mother’s death changed his view of life.
Elvis Presley didn’t want to be singing ‘Hound Dog’ when he was 40
In her 1985 book Elvis and Me, Priscilla reflected on the state of her ex-husband’s career following their divorce in 1973, when Elvis was 38. “His movie career was at a standstill, and he focused on Vegas appearances and touring. Elvis had trouble seeing himself ‘a forty-year-old man still shaking to ‘Hound Dog,”” she wrote. “He had other ambitions. He once talked of producing, even directing, but he never took steps to pursue either.”
For context, Elvis acted in a film for the last time in 1969, when he played a physician in Change of Habit.

There are celebrities who transcend mere levels of fame to become an icon. Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, and Muhammad Ali all come to mind as pop culture figures that achieved a level of ubiquity that firmly embedded them in the fabric of 20th century pop culture, impacting the cultural imagination in a way that can still be felt today. And among those icons, there’s another 20th century figure that feels more legend than man at this point in time: Elvis, baby.

In 1957, Elvis Presley began working with Michael Curtiz, the esteemed director of Casablanca. At this point, Curtiz was an Academy Award-winning director, and Elvis was primarily a musician with only three films on his acting resume. Curtiz fully expected to dislike him. When they began working together, though, the director found that he liked Elvis far more than he had anticipated.
Elvis Presley impressed a director who had expected to dislike him
Elvis dove headfirst into preparing for King Creole, believing that the role could be majorly beneficial to his acting career. While Elvis was optimistic about the part, Curtiz wasn’t happy that he had to direct a relatively inexperienced actor. Elvis worked to prove himself to the director, though.

Riley Keough is set to become the sole trustee of Lisa Marie Presley‘s estate, according to new legal documents filed on Monday in Los Angeles.
In the docs obtained by Et, Riley petitions the court to approve the settlement agreement reached between her, her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, and Michael Lockwood, the Guardian Ad Litem for her two younger siblings. The settlement terms will see Riley serve as the sole trustee of her mother’s estate and the sub-trusts for her sisters, 14-year-old twins Harper and Finley Lockwood.
Riley will not charge for her services as trustee, which her lawyer, Justin Gold, writes “will save money that would have gone to Priscilla who was going to charge a trustee fee.” Her lawyer also states in the docs that Riley intends to safeguard and invest the money “in a manner consistent with the needs of the beneficiaries, and not influenced by the desire of a Trustee.

Weeks before Elvis Presley died at age 42, he and his father, Vernon Presley, shared an extended conversation at Graceland. According to the elder Presley, the six-hour confab concluded with Elvis saying, “I really enjoyed this.” Those were the last words he’d ever hear from his son.
Now that Vernon’s dead, no one will know whether the pair discussed the time Elvis’s dad spent in prison.

The recently-released Elvis biopic depicts a lot of inaccuracies, but some scenes are spot on. For instance, Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker did hire Vernon to act as a “business manager.” But Elvis Presley Enterprises didn’t form until after the entertainer died, says Looper.
Another completely true inclusion in the movie: The singer’s dad was convicted of forgery and sent to prison.

Elvis has entered the building. The first trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic starring Austin Butler (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”) as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was released Thursday, and the resemblance is uncanny. The trailer also confirmed that the previously untitled Warner Bros. film will be called “Elvis.”
The film explores two decades in the life of superstar Elvis Presley before his early death in 1977 at the age of 42, focusing on his complex relationship with manager Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The film follows his rise to fame from poverty and features an all-star cast including Olivia DeJonge (“The Visit”) as Elvis’ wife Priscilla, singer-songwriter Yola as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Kodi Smit-McPhee (“The Power of the Dog”) as Jimmie Rodgers, Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”) as B.B. King, Luke Bracey (“Little Fires Everywhere”) as Jerry Schilling and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Presley’s mother,...

Fans of music biopics have a lot to look forward to right now. Timothée Chalamet is playing Bob Dylan in “Going Electric,” from “Walk the Line” director James Mangold. Bradley Cooper is directing and starring in “Maestro,” his take on Leonard Bernstein. And “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green is set to helm a Bob Marley biopic starring Kingsley Ben-Adir. But one of the most anticipated music films is “Elvis,” Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film about the legendary Elvis Presley.
The idea of the flashy Australian director with a penchant for films about music taking on the showmanship-loving singer seemed like a match made in heaven for many film fans when the project was first announced in 2014. The role of Elvis Presley — which has been played in other projects by everyone from Michael Shannon to Jonathan Rhys-Meyers — was extremely coveted, with the likes of Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, and Harry Styles vying for the part.
