Already, the company with offices in L.A. and New York has made a deal with Village Roadshow Television to develop the series I Will Be Good, inspired by Bryan Smith’s article for Chicago magazine. Written by Karen Croner, it will tell the story of a $53 million bamboozle: how Rita Crundwell, the trusted comptroller of the small Illinois town of Dixon, pulled off the biggest municipal embezzlement in U.S. history to date without anyone noticing. The project will be executive produced by Meryl Poster.

December 27 marked the 20th anniversary of “Chicago,” one of the most successful musical film adaptations of all time. The movie — director Rob Marshall’s film debut — won Best Picture at the Oscars, becoming the first musical to do so since 1968’s “Oliver,” and grossed over 306 million at the global box office. But the film almost didn’t happen, because distributor Miramax Films wanted Marshall to helm the “Rent” movie adaptation instead.
Marshall revealed the origins of the project in a 20th-anniversary interview with the Hollywood Reporter, explaining that Miramax and Harvey Weinstein (years before his sexual abuse was exposed publicly) scouted him to direct an adaptation of “Rent” after his work on the ’90s revival of “Cabaret” and the 1999 TV film version of “Annie.” Marshall, however, wanted to direct “Chicago,” calling it his favorite musical of all time. The “Rent” film would eventually be directed by Chris Columbus and released...

Although it might be hard to believe 20 years later, Chicago’s director recalls being stunned that his first feature film would even get an awards season campaign, let alone that it would break box office records, become the first musical in more than 30 years to win best picture, help revitalize a moribund genre — and all that jazz.
Chicago, based on the 1975 musical of the same name that itself adapted a 1926 play, boasted a star-studded ensemble cast that included Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly, Christine Baranski, Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu. Hitting theaters Dec. 27, 2002, the Miramax film told the story of fame-crazed murderers Roxie Hart (Zellweger) and Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones) who seek the assistance of flashy lawyer Billy Flynn (Gere) to keep them away from the gallows — and in the papers.

With four more episodes left to air, History has decided to cancel its gritty military drama Six.
Ratings have not been kind to the second season, but there were some big changes to the story of the ten-episode chapter in comparison to Six Season 1.
What hasn't changed is camaraderie between the characters on one of the few shows on television that currently features men supporting other men in a sea of programming that features women doing it all the time.
Six Season 2 began immediately after Rip was shot. The character was ultimately killed, leaving a hole in the cast left by Walton Goggins.
The Seal Team felt the pain of their former leader's loss and with Bear at the helm and the addition of CIA officer Gina Cline (Olivia Munn), began to scour Eastern Europe, infiltrating hostile territory and terrorist hotspots like Chechnya as they track the mastermind behind the...

History has canceled the military drama “Six” after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
The scripted series followed members of the elite Navy Seal Team Six. In the second season, the team is on a mission to destroy the terrorist network responsible for the shooting of their former team leader, Richard “Rip” Taggart (Walton Goggins).

Exclusive: History has opted not to order a third season of its Navy Seal drama series Six. The decision comes with four more episodes left to air from the 10-episode second season. They will run as scheduled. I hear the timing of the decision was tied to the cast options expiring at the end of this week.
Six was a breakout for History when it debuted in early 2017, drawing strong ratings and earning a Season 2 renewal ahead of its Season 1 finale for a 10-episode second season, up from the eight-episode first season.
Ratings have dropped in Season 2, running almost 50% below the Season 1 averages in Live+same day, which I hear was behind the cancellation decision.
History’s scripted series portfolio includes flagship Vikings, Knightfall, which I hear is gearing up for a second season, and the upcoming Robert Zemeckis-produced UFO series Blue Book.

The last time Lin-Manuel Miranda attended the Tony Awards, he was nervous because “In the Heights” needed to win in order to lure audiences. It won best new musical.
That’s not a problem for his ticket-scalpers’ delight, “Hamilton,” his second Broadway musical. He stars in the production, wrote the book, music, and lyrics, and it scored a record-breaking 16 nominations. It swept the Tonys Sunday night with 11 awards including best new musical, and could eventually earn over $1 billion worldwide, according to The New York Times.
“Hamilton” also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and a Grammy Award for best musical theater album. Because Miranda won an Emmy for writing Neil Patrick Harris’s closing rap at the 2014 Tonys, all he needs is an Oscar to become a member of the Egot club.
That’s not an impossibility, as Miranda’s moving his star to Hollywood—more specifically, Disney. J.J. Abrams...

J.J. Abrams...

The Labor Day star's past as a Hollywood brat featured more than his share of drugs, booze and tattoos. How much did he draw on his own history in his portrayal of fugitive killer Frank?
Labor Day spins the story of Frank, an escaped convict who gatecrashes suburbia and proceeds to cook a peach cobbler to die for. "Let's put a roof on this house," says Frank, up to his muscled forearms in flour, as he prepares to add the pastry to the filling. Labor Day, it should be noted, is not a film to skimp on its metaphors. The peach cobbler represents the tumbledown family home, sad and broken and in need of repair. No doubt it also represents Frank, whose crusty exterior contains a warm, gooey centre. Perhaps it even says something about the actor who plays him too.

Bravo is throwing its hat into the original scripted series ring with "Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce," an hour-long series produced by Marti Noxon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), who also wrote the pilot. Dawn Olmstead, Vicki Iovine, Meryl Poster and Adam Brooks are the executive producers, with Brooks directing the pilot.
The series is based on Iovine's series of "Girlfriends' Guide" books and is set to debut in 2015. It stars Lisa Edelstein ("House") as Abby, a woman entering the next chapter of her life after her divorce -- but since she's a self-help book author, she tries to hide her separation. As Abby works to navigate being a single woman in her 40s in Los Angeles, she seeks out the advice of her divorced friends.
Janeane Garofalo ("24") is Lyla, a divorcee who is a no-nonsense Hollywood attorney, and Beau Garrett ("Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior") is Phoebe, also a recent divorcee and former model.

TLC loves programming threads. It used to have lots of shows about families with boatloads of children, though it has slimmed down on that thread. It also has its wedding-dress thread, its hoarders thread, its Amish thread. And, The Weinstein Company hopes, it will soon have a trailer park thread. Today, TWC announced it is renaming its doing-okay-but-not-a-hit TLC reality series Welcome To Myrtle Manor, which will henceforth be known as Trailer Park: Welcome To Myrtle Manor, starting with its second season. TWC says it’s making this change in order to spawn lots of trailer park spinoffs, set in other U.S. locations. Ginning up more ratings would help too, but that’s another story, and we hear they’ve tweaked the show for next season. “The Trailer Park spinoffs that we’re developing promise to bring new twists on the same types of lovable, zany characters and entertaining scenarios,...

HollywoodNews.com: After a recent plea to the MPAA by Bully teen Alex Libby and The Weinstein Company (TWC) Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein failed – by one vote – to get the film its deserved PG-13 rating, TWC is choosing to move forward with releasing the film unrated by the MPAA on March 30.
Furthering proof that the R rating for some language is inappropriate for a film that’s meant to educate and help parents, teachers, school officials and children with what’s become an epidemic in schools around the country, the fight against the rating continues on. The outpour of support by politicians, schools, parents, celebrities and activists for the film’s mission to be seen by those it was made for – children – has been overwhelming. Nearly half a million people have signed Michigan high school student and former bullying victim Katy Butler’s petition on Change.org to urge the MPAA to lower the rating.

Yesterday, we republished former Miramax executive Mark Lipsky's post about the parallels between the upcoming TWC release "Bully" and Harvey Weinstein's own behavior. Wrote Lipsky, If Harvey has, in fact, reformed, he needs to come out and say so publicly. He needs to own his past behavior, admit to his addiction – bullying is an addiction, after all, both to power and dominance – and pledge to never bully anyone again. If he’s looking for ink and controversy (and he certainly is) there’s no more honest or powerful way for him and the film to get it. Today, I received this letter from longtime Weinstein exec Meryl Poster, acknowledging that Weinstein has a "history of a bad temper" but "has made more progress on those weaknesses than anyone I know." Writes Poster, "He feels Bully is a step towards his own redemption. He’s made a valiant effort...
