- His father, Pepe, is a former banker. His mother, Conchita, is also a former banker who suffers from Alzheimer's disease and has been in a nursing home since 2005. Family fled Cuba when Tony was a child. They settled in Culver City, California, where his father found employment in a Tootsie Roll factory.

- Cuban born Tony Plana also starred in the movie Havana as Julio Ramos, newspaper reporter. The plot of this movie is centered around the Cuban revolution of 1959, which a previous trivia item failed to mention.
- Has played the father of characters played by America Ferrera on both "Ugly Betty" (2006) and "Superstore" (2015).
- Apppeared on four films with Raul Julia: Romero (1989), Havana (1990), The Rookie (1990) and The Burning Season: The Chico Mendes Story (1994).
