It is absolutely unbelievable, but we've almost reached the end of Grey's Anatomy's twentieth season.
This week, tons of excitement is happening at Grey Sloan as the writers get us ready for next week's season finale.
Catherine has discovered the truth about what Meredith has been up to, and she's out for blood on Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 9.
This week was pretty fast-paced, which was a nice change after a few slower episodes that focused more on surgical cases than character development.
The first big reveal of the hour was the return of Maggie Pierce, a divisive character the likes of whom we haven't seen in about a year.
People have strong feelings about this character and how she fits into the Grey's Anatomy universe, but I have always loved her.
I'll always be a sucker for the way the writers tied Meredith, Maggie, and Amelia together into a sisterhood,...

We've seen several intern classes over the years, and to be honest, a lot of them are forgettable. This is the first class where the writers attempt to recapture the magic or, in this case, M.A.G.Y.K.
Yes, the original Magic used first names, and this one uses last names, so...

Character departures are inevitable for most shows.
That doesn't mean we have to like them. Sometimes, a character has to go because it's necessary for the story.
Other times, the actor moves on to a new role, and the character can't continue without them.
Now and then, a character's time on a show comes to an end in a way that leaves us brokenhearted and feeling betrayed by the writers.
These exits took us by surprise, and not in a good way.
Alex Karev's Dear John Letters on Grey's Anatomy
If you ask us, Alex Karev had one of the best character glow-ups of all time, with the kind of character development we can normally only dream about. His transformation from snarky, too-cool-for-school jock to the mature, brilliant man he became was one for the ages.

What is it about a woman in charge that brings out the critics?
No matter the genre, you can always find a female lead character that gets a strong negative audience response. Call it a hot take, but we think a lot of those women deserved better than the treatment they got.
Let's be real; some of these characters are children. How terrible could they really be?
These unpopular ladies definitely deserved better from fans, and we're prepared to die on that hill.
Here's why we'll stan these women 'til the end, even if we're the only ones.
Maggie Pierce: Grey's Anatomy
The condemnation thrown at Maggie Pierce was always over the top, especially considering she's a young, gifted, Black surgeon with a complicated past whose unrelenting optimism should have charmed viewers.
It's totally understandable that folks didn't love the Ellis-Richard-love-child storyline she brought with her to Grey's Anatomy, but...

Did the series execute Maggie's sendoff well? What was your favorite part about it? What do you think they could've done better?
Joshua: The series executed the sendoff well in terms of final episodes. Everything leading up to it was maddening, though, and that may have lessened the impact of Maggie leaving. For almost the whole season, Maggie felt unrelatable and unlikeable, so going into this episode, I had some trouble caring about...

With a two-hour special packed with so much, Grey's pulled off a beautiful, simplistic, and fitting departure for Maggie Pierce.
The irony of them combining Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Episode 14 and Grey's Anatomy Season 19 Episode 15 for a supersized farewell that exceeded Meredith's goodbye isn't lost on anyone.
But with the rocky departures, the series has pulled off over the years, it was nice to have something decent and did the character leaving justice.
At the heart of the installments, Maggie spent her last days at Grey Sloan Memorial being the incredibly badass surgeon and the attentive doctor she is and making right and settling things with all the people she was leaving behind in pursuit of her future and passion.
Unlike her mother, Maggie has always been ambitious, passionate, kind, and compassionate. She's in medicine for the love of it as well as a genuine desire to make a difference and help people.

Dr. Maggie Pierce treated her last patient at Grey Sloan Memorial Thursday, after nine seasons as a core member of the “Grey’s Anatomy” cast.
For Kelly McCreary, the actress behind the talented cardiothoracic surgeon and Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister, the ABC medical drama’s two-hour farewell gave her the perfect vehicle to honor Maggie’s journey, and to close a major chapter in her own life and career.
“It meant a lot to me,” McCreary told TheWrap about the episodes. “When I spoke to Krista [Vernoff, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ showrunner and executive producer], after she agreed to let Maggie go, I said it’d be very nice to be able to have scenes that feel like closure with all of the characters that have meant something to Maggie … my homies, my family that I’ve been doing this with for such a long time.”

[This story contains spoilers from the April 13 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “Shadow of Your Love/Mama Who Bore Me.”]
After nine seasons of playing Dr. Maggie Pierce, Kelly McCreary has said farewell to Grey’s Anatomy.
The April 13 episode — a double hour with “Shadow of Your Love/Mama Who Bore Me” — brought Maggie’s arc to a crossroad after weeks of marital tension with husband Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) as the brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon found herself in a professional crisis: Stay and work on her marriage or accept the once-in-a-lifetime offer at the Heart Center of Chicago?
To help Maggie make her decision, Grey’s Anatomy invoked Maggie’s lineage. The half-sister to Meredith Grey shares a birth mother with Ellen Pompeo’s titular character, Ellis Grey (Kate Burton). The late world-famous surgeon has always loomed large over both of her now also world-famous surgeon daughters, and McCreary says Ellis’ role in Maggie’s life has been the North Star...

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about Episodes 1914 and 1915 of Grey’s Anatomy, which aired April 13.
In a two-episode arc tonight, Grey’s Anatomy bid farewell to Maggie Pierce, as Kelly McCreary, who has played Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister and head of the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery since the end of Season 10, is leaving the long-running medical drama.
The episodes chronicled Maggie’s last day at Grey Sloan and her departure for her new job in Chicago. Compared to Meredith, who got a big going-away party, Maggie’s sendoff was more subdued, but she had heartfelt goodbye scenes with several longtime surgeons, most notably her dad Richard who gave her a present: a business-card holder shaped like the bench they sat on when he found out she was his daughter.
Maggie and Winston pulled off one last medical miracle together, teaming to save a woman with a giant tumor near her heart.

Kelly McCreary announced her exit after nine seasons last month, with her final episode set to air next week.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, McCreary opened up about her decision to exit the long-running medical drama.
The star said that the decision is "creative," which could hint that she was not impressed with the recent developments for the character.
McCreary said she has "lived with and loved Maggie Pierce for nine years. It's a long time."
She explained that "at the beginning of every season, I think about Maggie's origins, and I think about how she's grown and how she's transformed."
"I always think about the fact that she is of Ellis Grey stock, and she's got that hunger, that ambition," McCreary added.

After almost two decades of healing wounds, both physical and romantic, the staff of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is still going strong.
Despite the onscreen departure of series star Ellen Pompeo, Grey’s Anatomy has already been picked up for its 20th season, meaning fans had plenty to celebrate at the show’s PaleyFest panel, held at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday.
Krista Vernoff — who will depart as showrunner after the 19th season — was joined onstage by 15 members of the current ensemble cast, including Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreary, Kim Raver, Jake Borelli, Chris Carmack, Anthony Hill, Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr. Adelaide Kane, Midori Francis and Niko Terho.
The audience unleashed raucous applause as soon as moderator (and original castmember) T.R. Knight appeared, and they only grew louder as series stalwarts such as Wilson and Pickens took to the stage.

Maggie Pierce's time in Seattle is coming to a close.
That much we've known for two weeks now, but there has been no indication about how Kelly McCreary's beloved Grey's Anatomy character would depart.
Until now.
McCreary's final episode is slated to air Thursday, April 13, but next week's episode hints how Maggie's arc will end.
We hear in a new trailer for the episode that the Heart Center in Chicago is interested in Maggie.
Teddy tells Amelia the news.
"Why didn't you tell me about a job offer?" Amelia says to her sister.
We don't get any indication of whether Maggie accepts the job offer and, of course, whether Winston will accompany her.
"I already moved across the country for you once," He says in the clip.
If you watch Grey's Anatomy online, you know Maggie and Winston's relationship has been in tatters lately.

Grey’s Anatomy is gearing up to say goodbye to another one of its central doctors in Season 19, and the promo for the April 6 episode might have revealed how the ABC medical drama will write out Kelly McCreary’s Dr. Maggie Pierce. In the episode entitled “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” a bull rider is bucked off and stomped on by a 1000-lb bull, and she doesn’t want her parents to know because they freak out when stuff like this happens. Her injuries are severe enough that she needs surgery, during which Maggie takes control. The rest of the promo features Teddy (Kim Raver) telling Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) that the Heart Center in Chicago is interested in Maggie. “Why didn’t you tell me about a job offer?” Amelia then asks her sister. So is Maggie going to take that job? ...

Despite a recent wave of cast exits, Grey's Anatomy will continue on ABC into the 2023-24 TV season.
The network on Friday renewed Grey's Anatomy for an unprecedented Season 20.
As ABC's longest-running series, Grey's Anatomy has still commanded strong ratings, meaning that a renewal was inevitable.
Typically with longer-running shows, renewals are more complicated due to cast salaries.
But Grey's Anatomy has said goodbye to Ellen Pompeo as a series regular, while Kelly McCreary will depart next month.
Also exiting is Krista Vernoff, who has served as showrunner on the series.
Executive producer Meg Marinis will take the reigns of the series.
Marinis has a long and storied history with the series, having written more than 25 episodes and served as an executive producer.

Meredith Grey is losing another family member.
As reported by our sister site Deadline, Kelly McCreary is leaving “Grey’s Anatomy” during the upcoming April 13 episode. For those keeping track at home, that will be the show’s 414th episode (!) overall. McCreary played Maggie Pierce, the sister of Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), for nine seasons on ABC’s medical drama after initially debuting in the two-part Season 10 finale in 2014. Read the actress’ full statement below, in which she declares, “It has been a tremendous honor.”
McCreary’s exit will likely be connected to Maggie’s recent marriage troubles with Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill), a storyline that has dominated this 19th season. Prior to this year, Maggie and Winston were one of the show’s power couples who memorably got married in a beautiful beach setting at the end of Season 17, aka the dreaded “Covid season.”

Grey's Anatomy, as we know it, is over.

It has been a tremendous honor to be a part of such a legendary television institution as “Grey’s Anatomy,”” McCreary said in a statement. “I will always be grateful to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff and ABC for the opportunity, and to the incredible fans for their passionate support. To spend nine years exploring a character inside and out, while reaching...

Grey’s Anatomy’s revolving door just keeps swinging. On the heels of Ellen Pompeo’s exit as a series regular and showrunner Krista Vernoff’s announcement that this season will be her last (for now, anyway) comes word that Kelly McCreary is also departing.
The Thursday, April 13, episode of ABC’s resurgent drama will mark the actress’ final appearance as a series regular, according to our sister site Deadline. Her character — Meredith Grey’s half sister, Maggie Pierce — will likely leave Seattle rather than stay and work on her foundering marriage to fellow doctor Winston Ndugu. (As of this week’s episode,...

Exclusive: Grey Sloan Memorial will be losing both of Ellis Grey’s daughters this season. Kelly McCreary, who has played Maggie Pierce, Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister and head of the hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery since the end of Season 10, is departing ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy after nine years. Her last episode as a series regular will air April 13. Like Pompeo, who is set to return for the Season 19 finale after Meredith’s big Feb. 23 sendoff, Maggie also will pop in to visit the doctors of Grey Sloan later this season, following her April 13 farewell.
“After nine seasons, I am saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Grey Sloan family,” said McCreary who thanked Grey’s Anatomy creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes, executive producer/showrunner Krista Vernoff, and ABC for the opportunity to be a part of the “legendary television institution” that the long-running medical drama is. “Playing Maggie Pierce...

The episode “Thunderstruck” took place during a dangerous storm. Meredith has already started packing up her beloved home to move to Boston, where Zola (Aniela Gumbs) found a good school to challenge her, and Meredith will be researching a cure for Alzheimer’s.
But, of course, Meredith couldn’t leave without a dramatic exit. The house where the show started caught on fire. The episode ended with unclear how much of the house was standing after the fire was put out.
The good news is that Meredith and her children were safe. The...

Meredith Grey performed her “last” surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital during the winter premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” on Thursday. But Ellen Pompeo’s final episode as a series regular felt more like a “see you later,” leaving plenty of questions unanswered and the door open for her character’s return.
ABC promoted the episode, titled “I’ll Follow the Sun,” as Meredith’s big farewell to Seattle. Previews for the hour paid homage to the many traumatic moments, goodbyes, accomplishments and near-death experiences the doctor has procured across 19 seasons and over 400 episodes, but the hour itself played more like real life — with a dose of romantic comedy frustration.
The installment began as Meredith and her children arrived at the hospital for her last day on the job, in the aftermath of her longtime Seattle home sustaining damage in a fire. In a conversation with love interest Dr. Nick Marsh...

Elsewhere, the interns compete to scrub in on Maggie and Winston’s groundbreaking partial heart transplant procedure, and Richard asks Teddy an important question.

The honeymoon period is certainly over for our resident Grey-Sloan Memorial lovebirds. ABC released the first trailer for the upcoming season 19 of Grey's Anatomy, and in it we get our first sneak peek of what's happened to the fairly new relationship between Drs. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). After Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) informs Meredith that the man she loves "is here" from Minnesota, Nick reminds Meredith that it's been "six months." "It's been a very difficult six months," Meredith responds. The rest of the trailer is focused on getting the new class of interns acclimated to the...
