Michiel ten Horn’s “Fabula” – which opens this year’s edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam – follows a “dumb, selfish gangster who gets himself into a lot of trouble,” explains the director. But there’s a “philosophical layer” to it as well.
“It’s a redemption story, almost like ‘A Christmas Carol.’ He’s like a Charles Dickens character who’s visited by four ghosts and put through a real beating in order to learn something.”
In his crime comedy, Jos (“Speak No Evil’s” Fedja van Huêt) is used to bad luck – after all, his family has been dealing with it for years. But as a drug deal goes terribly wrong and, on top of it all, he finds out he’s about to become a grandfather, Jos’ determined to finally break the circle.
“I think the audience likes it when a character is struggling but also trying his best to achieve something.

The best way to watch Alex van Warmerdam’s latest Nr. 10 is to go in blind. He practically titled it “number 10” to help with that fact—it being his tenth directorial effort taking the spotlight from anything specific within. It’s also the reason why the first half of the runtime unfolds conventionally. If all you’re watching is an actor (Tom Dewispelaere’s Günter) as his world comes undone after his director (Hans Kesting’s Karl) discovers he’s having an affair with his wife (Anniek Pheifer’s Isabel), you become lulled into a false sense of familiarity. Yes, there are strange men putting their fingerprints all over his life’s sudden implosion to force us into questioning their motivations along the way. But only superficially. At least for now.
Is Günter a good man? Should we care about his plight? Maybe. He seems to have a decent relationship...

Now available in select theaters, virtual cinemas, vod, and digital services is Tailgate, a tense road trip film that Emily highly recommended after recently seeing it as part of the North Bend Film Festival. Here's a brand new clip we've been given exclusively for Daily Dead readers:
"Hans, his wife and two young children, hit the highway on a trip to visit family. After getting stuck behind a slow-moving van, he recklessly starts to antagonize the eerily stoic driver, blaring the horn and riding his bumper. Little does he realize that he’s just crossed the wrong motorist – a deranged madman who sets out to teach Hans a lesson he’ll not soon forget. Lured into an alarming game of vehicular cat and mouse, a simple family road trip turns into a deadly obstacle course in this nerve-wracking, pulse-pounding thriller, an Official Selection at the Sitges Film Festival and FrightFest.

Don't tailgate... or else!! Film Movement has released an official US trailer for a Dutch dark comedy dark thriller titled Tailgate, originally known as Bumperkleef in Dutch, which is probably an even better title than the English translation. A cocksure, road-raging family man finds himself pursued and terrorized by the vengeful van driver he chose to tailgate. Now they're in big trouble. "The van driver turns out to be the wrong man to cross on the road, and sets out to teach Hans a deadly lesson. Skillfully pushing the buttons of Hans's arrogance, a simple family road trip turns into a deadly obstacle course in this nerve-wracking, blackly comic morality tale thriller." Bumperkleef features Jeroen Spitzenberger, Anniek Pheifer, and Willem de Wolf. Between this and The Columnist, the Dutch seem to have a knack for mocking social situations in very dark and violent ways, while somehow making us laugh at the same time.

Every now and then, a particularly ferocious type of thriller comes along that knocks everyone for six; even the most weathered horror fan struggles to play dumb. The sort of film that’s so densely drenched in dread that it leaves you jumping, barking, screaming along with the characters and begging for some level of respite, that you just know will likely never come. Enter Dutch nerve-shredder Tailgate, a road-rage movie on a mission to make sure you never look at a white van in the same way again.
Also known by the even catchier Bumperkleef in its native Netherlands, Lodewijk Crijns’ thriller kicks off a bit like Spielberg’s Duel, with extra oomph. Hyper-macho family man Hans (Jeroen Spitzenberger) picks a fight where he probably shouldn’t, but the result is far from a casual fender-bender, when the wronged party (Willem de Wolf’s ‘Ed’) doesn’t just give chase,...
