Michiel ten Horn’s “Fabula” – which opens this year’s edition of International Film Festival Rotterdam – follows a “dumb, selfish gangster who gets himself into a lot of trouble,” explains the director. But there’s a “philosophical layer” to it as well.

“It’s a redemption story, almost like ‘A Christmas Carol.’ He’s like a Charles Dickens character who’s visited by four ghosts and put through a real beating in order to learn something.”

In his crime comedy, Jos (“Speak No Evil’s” Fedja van Huêt) is used to bad luck – after all, his family has been dealing with it for years. But as a drug deal goes terribly wrong and, on top of it all, he finds out he’s about to become a grandfather, Jos’ determined to finally break the circle.

The 54th edition of the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) will open with the world premiere of dark comedy Fabula from Dutch filmmaker Michiel ten Horn and close with historical epic This City Is a Battlefield from Indonesian director Mouly Surya.

With the festival taking place from January 30 to February 9 next year, IFFR also unveiled its jury line-ups across its three Competition strands: the Tiger Competition, the Tiger Short Competition and the Big Screen competition.

The Tiger Competition Jury will be made up of Yuki Aditya, Soheila Golestani, Winnie Lau, Peter Strickland and Andrea Luka Zimmerman.

Angela Haardt, Frank Sweeney and Yaoting Zhang will form the Tiger Short Competition Jury.

The Big Screen competition Jury will comprise of Bero Beyer, Sara Rajaei, Dewi Reijs, Digna Sinke and Jia Zhao.

Dutch filmmaker Michiel ten Horn’s Fabula will open the 2025 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) on January 30, while Indonesian filmmaker Mouly Surya’s historical epic This City Is A Battlefield will close the event on February 9.

Fabula is a dark comedy about a provincial criminal grappling with personal and professional failures, starring Fedja van Huet, Anniek Pheifer, Sezgin Gulec, Michiel Kerbosch, Georg Friedrich, and David Kross. It is a co-production between the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Michiel most recently directed the family feature Hotel Sinestra in 2023.

Surya’s This City is a Battlefield is set in 1946 during Indonesia’s fight for independence.

BBC Scoops ‘The Newsreader’ Season 2

Australian breakout drama The Newsreader is returning to the BBC in the UK after striking a deal with distributor eOne. The series, starring Anna Torv and Sam Reid follows a lives of pair of news presenters in the late 1980s, who are established as the ‘Golden Couple of News’ following season one, and crew of their News at Six program. However, with a new CEO taking charge of the show, Australia preparing to celebrate its bicentennial year and both anchors figuring out what they want from life, the truth about their success is more complex than it appears. The Michael Lucas-created show is for the ABC in Australia, and its second run will launch on BBC2 and BBC iPlayer in the UK in fall. Werner Film Productions makes the show in association with eOne.

The best way to watch Alex van Warmerdam’s latest Nr. 10 is to go in blind. He practically titled it “number 10” to help with that fact—it being his tenth directorial effort taking the spotlight from anything specific within. It’s also the reason why the first half of the runtime unfolds conventionally. If all you’re watching is an actor (Tom Dewispelaere’s Günter) as his world comes undone after his director (Hans Kesting’s Karl) discovers he’s having an affair with his wife (Anniek Pheifer’s Isabel), you become lulled into a false sense of familiarity. Yes, there are strange men putting their fingerprints all over his life’s sudden implosion to force us into questioning their motivations along the way. But only superficially. At least for now.

Is Günter a good man? Should we care about his plight? Maybe. He seems to have a decent relationship...

Drafthouse Films has unveiled the clip for “Nr. 10,” the anticipated next film of Alex van Warmerdam, the bold Dutch director best known for “Borgman.”

Van Warmerdam’s 10th feature, the film is a maze-like thriller telling the story of Günter, a theater actor who was raised by foster parents after being found abandoned in the woods with no memory as a child. Years later, a man approaches Günter on the street and whispers a strange word in his ear. He begins to experience visions from his fractured past that reveal a dark secret, threatening what he thinks he knows about his life and the very nature of his existence.

“Nr. 10” world premiered at Fantastic Fest 2021. It shot in Dutch, German and English with a cast boasting Tom Dewispelaere, Frieda Barnhard, Pierre Bokma, Hans Kesting, Anniek Pheifer and Jan Bijvoet. Don't tailgate... or else!! Nascent Amsterdam-based sales outfit Nine Film has picked up worldwide rights to Dutch director Norbert ter Hall’s drama Mi Vida that has wrapped after a five -week shoot in Cadiz in Spain and one day in the Netherlands.

Nine Film is headed by former Fortissimo executive Nelleke Driessen.
