Ben Pearce’s brilliant short film A Few Miles South tells the story of two arctic explorers trapped in a tent during a blizzard. But when one of them battles a strange addiction the other is faced with the decision of feeding his companion’s odd impulses or facing death outside. Pearce tells this story within a single location and with no dialogue which only serves to elevate the tension and claustrophobia between his characters. Without changing the environment too Pearce is able to create a feeling of disorientation which further accentuates the gallows humour of his character’s surreal behaviours. Dn is excited to Premiere A Few Miles South on our pages today and is joined by Pearce for a conversation about the film’s speedy production, the ease of working with collaborators like Toby Jones and Ivanno Jeremiah, and the challenge of constructing the film’s central perplexing nature during post-production.

A happy discovery! This is a major late- silent-era gem on the order of Von Sternberg’s Docks of New York — a special treat that will please fans of director William Wellman — he revisited parts of it in a later talkie. It’s also a key movie in our education/adoration of the maverick actress Louise Brooks, the erotic sensation too hot and too independent for Hollywood.

Ghostface Killah, your rapper's favorite rapper and a self-described "wizard of poetry," is one of hip-hop's most prolific artists — he's released nearly a dozen solo albums since his 1996 debut, Ironman, not to mention his work with the Wu-Tang Clan, which released their long-awaited new album, A Better Tomorrow, last week. This week, Ghostface drops 36 Seasons, a concept album on which the rapper's alter-ego, Tony Starks, gets killed by a crooked cop (played by Az) but brought back to life to exact vengeance. We spoke with Ghostface about how the album came together, his writing process, and his plans for the sequel to his masterpiece, Supreme Clientele. This is your third album in the past two years. How quickly did 36 Seasons come together? It only took eleven days. What it was, a team of people came together, and they asked if I wanted to do the project. Bob Perry [co-owner of...

Bob Perry, a philanthropist and home builder, died Saturday at age 80, the Texas Tribune reports. His death was confirmed by Neal T. "Buddy" Jones, a lobbyist and former Texas state representative, who said Perry passed in his sleep. "Bob Perry was a friend to many, many people all over the United States, and he was a true patriot. He will be sorely missed," Jones adds.
During his lifetime, Perry was known as a major financial contributor for conservative candidates. During the 2012 election cycle, he gave over $23 million to Super PACs, as well as $1.5 million to Texas governor Rick Perry (no relation) during the 2010 election.
In a statement from Governor Perry, he says, "Bob Perry was an exceptional man of great faith who believed strongly in everything he put his mind and soul into, and nothing more so than his family."
Perry was born and raised in Texas, attending Baylor University.

Los Angeles -- Prosecutors refusing to accept an appellate court's ruling in the Anna Nicole Smith case asked the court on Friday to change its decision and allow her former boyfriend and manager to be retried.
California's 2nd District Court of Appeal ruled last month that Howard K. Stern could not be retried without violating the Fifth Amendment protection against double jeopardy. Attorneys in the office of District Attorney Steve Cooley filed a 19-page motion for rehearing that contends the court misinterpreted the law.
The court said a trial judge erred in dismissing conspiracy convictions against Stern and Smith's psychiatrist, Dr. Khristine Eroshevich, in a case that partially revolved around obtaining prescription drugs for the celebrity model under false names. The defendants were not charged with causing her death.
Superior Court Judge Robert Perry found it was not unusual in the celebrity world Smith inhabited for fake names to be used to protect privacy.

Howard K. Stern is back in limbo. Anna Nicole Smith's onetime companion and attorney could end up being sentenced to prison time for conspiracy to use fake names and false pretenses to acquire prescription drugs after a state appellate court panel today overturned a previous decision to throw out his conviction. Stern was cleared in 2010 of nine felony charges connected with Smith's prescription-drug use but convicted on two counts of conspiracy. In February 2011, L.A. Superior Court Judge Robert Perry vacated the convictions against Stern and three of four against a codefendant, citing lack of evidence. A three-judge panel of the 2nd District Court of Appeal didn't agree with Perry's...

The next presidential race will be driven by more money than ever before-and the Gop is already besting the Dems' fundraising. Peter H. Stone of the Center for Public Integrity reports on the tactics behind the furious money grab.
At a Washington hotel and a building blocks from the White House, the smell of money-big money-was in the air.

In a speech Wednesday to some 500 top Democratic fundraisers, President Obama focused on what's he's accomplished so far and the serious challenges ahead such as energy, the red-ink budget and the Middle East.
Across town, Wisconsin Republican lawmakers were toasted at a fundraiser hosted by the lobbying shop Bgr Group, founded by potential Gop presidential candidate Haley Barbour. Bgr was picketed by liberal groups furious over the state's gutting of collective bargaining for public employee unions.

From Robert Perry, writing at Alternet:
As Election Day 2010 approaches – as the United States wallows in the swamps of war, recession and environmental degradation – the consequences of the nation’s three-decade-old decoupling from reality are becoming painfully obvious.
Yet, despite the danger, the nation can’t seem to move in a positive direction, as if the suctioning effect of endless spin, half-truths and lies holds the populace in place, a force that grows ever more powerful like quicksand sucking the country deeper into the muck – to waist deep, then neck deep.
Trapped in the mud, millions of Americans are complaining about their loss of economic status, their sense of powerlessness, their nation’s decline. But instead of examining how the country stumbled into this morass, many still choose not to face reality.
