When production designers Shona Heath and James Price were tasked with designing the dark comedy Poor Things, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-nominated movie about a woman whose resurrected with her infant’s brain, they had several key decisions to make. For starters, how would they represent the London mansion, which included the laboratory of mad scientist Dr. Baxter, played by Willem Dafoe? The answer turned out to be simple: They’d put human anatomy along the walls and ceiling.

Claire Foy and Richard E. Grant are set to lead a new period drama directed by Peter Glanz.
Titled “Savage House,” the eighteenth century black comedy also stars Bel Powley (“A Small Light”) and Jack Farthing (“The Lost Daughter”).
Kila Lord Cassidy (“The Wonder”), Richard McCabe (“Napoleon”), Vicki Pepperdine (“Poor Things”) and Pip Torrens (“The Iron Lady”) round out the cast. The film recently wrapped in the U.K.
“Set against the backdrop of eighteenth century England, a massive pox outbreak, and Jacobite uprising – this is a timely and darkly satirical story of Sir Chauncey Savage (Grant) and Lady Savage (Foy) and their blind pursuit of a better life,” reads the logline. “It is not without a tinge of irony that their family name is the Savages, for this is a Savage House indeed. Filled with duels, decadence, and bloodshed, this is a madcap play on class and power.”

It would have been a perfect circle. Willem Dafoe’s scientist Godwin Baxter finds the recently deceased body of suicide victim Victoria Blessington (Emma Stone) after she’s leapt from a bridge. Victoria is very pregnant and her unborn baby is not dead, so God transplants the infant’s brain into Victoria’s body, which he reanimates. He renames his creation Bella Baxter and watches her develop as a child in an adult’s body. Through the course of the film she travels, learns, and grows into the happy woman we see at the end.
Of course, the end of the film comes with a gag. Alfie Blessington (Christopher Abbott), the husband of the deceased Victoria, attempts to imprison Bella, drug her, and mutilate her genitals. But he’s defeated when Bella throws the chloroform-laced cocktail intended for her in Alfie’s face, causing...

This article contains Poor Things spoilers.
It is probably the happiest Bella Baxter has ever been, and it’s certainly the most euphoric we’ve seen a Yorgos Lanthimos movie get. Hidden away in a shabby laboratory, scalpel in hand and trusted partner (if not great lover) by her side, Bella is doing what she realizes she always wanted to do: play God by way of vivisection.
Somehow Bella’s epiphany is both macabrely funny and unexpectedly sweet. In the penultimate sequence of Lanthimos’ Poor Things, the Emma Stone heroine has found the purpose and fulfillment she always strived for during her brief but extraordinarily eventful life. Earlier that very day, in fact, the man who was married to the body that now houses Bella’s mind sought to mutilate her genitals. In his warped patriarchal view, removing Bella’s clitoris would exert some kind of barbaric control over her body.

“She is the most literal character. ‘It’s sunny, you wear glasses. I put on shoes because it hurts when I walk outside without shoes on,’” says producer and actress Emma Stone of her latest role as Bella Baxter in “Poor Things.”
Based on Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name, Bella is a creation of Willem Dafoe’s mad scientist Godwin Baxter. Smart, clever and inventive, Poor Things is described by the filmmakers as “the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), a young woman brought back to life from the brink of death by the brilliant, daring scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).” Based on the novel by the late Scottish author Alasdair Gray, director Lanthimos and scriptwriter Tony McNamara also reference Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein,” making this off-beat coming-of-age fantasy a kind of “feminist Frankenstein” that is part dark comedy, part adventure thriller and pure smart entertaining fantasy with an uplifting message.
Poor Things is a wild science fiction coming-of-age tale set in an alternate Victorian world that is part steam punk and part anachronistic fantasy from the writer/director who gave us The Favorite and The Lobster, Yorgos Lanthimos.

Director Yorgos Lanthimos has made multiple films about characters who are controlled -- to mixed fates -- by their sexual appetites, and how their sexual desire will ultimately push up against their prison-like boundaries.
In his 2009 film "Dogtooth," a weirdly tyrannical father (Christos Stergioglou) has kept his children confined in their childhood home until their young adulthood, lying to them about the nature of the world and teaching them nonsensical vocabulary. The young son is granted regular conjugal visits from a hired interloper (Anna Kalaitzidou). She, against the father's rules, begins explaining sex to the kids, and they begin thinking about the outside world. The father attempts to control his children's sex lives, but ultimately runs aground on his daughter's taste of knowledge.

Exploring the sexuality of Emma Stone’s “Poor Things” character was an important part of the storyline, says director Yorgos Lanthimos.
During a Friday press conference at the New York Film Festival, the filmmaker explained why Stone’s character Bella Baxter’s sex scenes were “a very important part of her journey.
“We felt that we shouldn’t shy away from it,” Lanthimos, 50, said. “It would feel very disingenuous to tell this story about this character who is so free and so open, and then be prude about the sexual aspect of it.”
“Poor Things” — based on the 1992 novel by Alasdair Gray — is a Victorian tale of love, discovery and scientific daring that centres around Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life in a Frankenstein-like fashion by an eccentric but brilliant scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).

Bella Baxter––whose organic internal makeup I’ll leave to shocking reveal––was born an adult woman. The furiously beating heart of Yorgos Lanthimos’s new film, Poor Things, she was found dead at the bottom of a bridge, an unknown life left behind her, and reanimated from Jane Doe into Bella (Emma Stone) by a bubble-belching monster. Though, that’s not what he calls himself.
Dr. Godwin Baxter––a professor-scientist who looks more like Frankenstein’s monster than Dr. Frankenstein, trenches carved through his compartmentalized face––calls himself God. He means it as a lighthearted joke, but Bella doesn’t understand it that way. To her, he is Creator. Godwin (Willem Dafoe) teaches her how to eat, breathe, sleep, shit, laugh, go outside––all the essentials. No mind his grotesque appearance, or that he involuntarily yap-croaks large oily bubbles while he eats, or the apparent character flaws: a foreboding workaholism,...

It’s a failing of our society that we’ve allowed “interesting” to become a euphemism, a blandly veiled insult, something to say when no other praise comes to mind. Little in life is more important than interest: having it, attracting it, identifying it in any crevice of the everyday, making it strange and fresh in the process. Across his career, Yorgos Lanthimos has befuddled many a viewer into calling his work “interesting” as a placeholder for their confusion and excitement, and it’s hard to imagine that he’d ever take offense. He’s a filmmaker who revels in interest, in curiosity at the price of comfort, and in his lavish, violently ravishing new film “Poor Things,” he zeroes in on a heroine with the same craving. To Bella Baxter, a literal child in a woman’s body, everything is new and everything is interesting — words, bodies, maps, music,...

Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. If there’s one thing we’re not short of on this strange little island, it’s funny people. When life is good, we’re laughing. When things get weird, we’re laughing. And when everything falls apart, somehow we’re still laughing.
From top bants to gallows humour, you can always rely on the British to bring the LOLs, and from Charlie Chaplin through to Monty Python and Fleabag, British comedy seems to translate pretty well worldwide too, meaning there’s plenty on offer on Netflix.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance sees Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh back together to finish what they started 11 years ago. This time, however, most of the magic seems to have gone, as too has the entertainment.
After the Covid pandemic Mike (Channing Tatum) has fallen on hard times, his business has gone under and he now finds himself bartending a rich charity event. After the event, he meets Max (Salma Hayek), the hostess of said event, who needs a spark added to her life. That spark comes in the form of a dance, a dance Mike gives her that will finally give her a sense of purpose, a sense of life she hasn’t felt in years. That spark...

As if King Charles III didn’t already have enough drama in his life, between his logorrheic son Prince Harry and disgraced brother Prince Andrew, comedian Harry Enfield is set to unleash a little more chaos ahead of the coronation in May.
Enfield’s Channel 4 comedy “The Windsors” is returning for a coronation special, with the comedian set to reprise his role as the monarch.
“Charles’ whole life has been building up to this moment and he wants the U.K.’s first coronation in seventy years to be a spectacular affair with all the pomp and circumstance he deserves,” reads the logline. “As does his Queen Consort Camilla (Haydn Gwynne), who can’t wait to drape herself in diamonds and fur. Sadly, the U.K. is in the middle of a cost of living crisis and Wills (Hugh Skinner) thinks the coronation should reflect these more straitened times.”

Magic Mike’s Last Dance is a movie directed by Steven Soderbergh starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek.
Good old Mike returns with his sculpted abs from the hand of the director everyone loves for this farewell, not very spectacular cinematographically, but fun and entertaining.
Storyline
Mike works as a waiter until a rich woman takes him to London to, together, form a group of male strippers.
Movie Review Magic Mike’s Last Dance
Correct, very correct and knowing that there is a certain Soderbergh in charge of the project, but as not everything can be done by the good director and “one-man band”, he has his always good partners who accompany him: this time, same as always, Channing Tatum, a very good actor for comedy, and Salma Hayek, who does a bit of everything and does everything well.
In short, a film that, with the quality of talent it possesses, could...

Audiences are ponying up for “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which is projected to lead a quiet Super Bowl weekend at the domestic box office.
The third “Magic Mike” entry earned roughly 4.1 million in opening day and Thursday preview screenings, with industry sources projecting a debut around 8 million. Warner Bros. itself isn’t reporting numbers.
There are a few question marks surrounding the debut of “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which is receiving a limited release in 1,500 North American locations. Though the film was commissioned for an HBO Max release, Warner Bros. swerved to go theatrical — the studio did the same for its comedy remake “House Party” in January, which also opened in less than 2,000 theaters and has earned a slim 8.8 million.
While “Last Dance” is making a bigger splash than “House Party,” it’ll finish with an opening down from its 2012 original (39.1 million) and 2015 sequel “Magic Mike Xxl”. Critical consensus is...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on February 9th, 2023, reviewing “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” the third of the male dancer films featuring Channing Tatum. In theaters on February 10th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Channing Tatum is back as Mike Lane, but he’s out of the male dancer profession, trying to make ends meet as a bartender in Miami after a bad business deal. While working a swanky benefit, he encounters rich socialite Maxandra Mendoza (Salma Hayek). After providing her with a Magic Mike dance, she hires him to revive a London theater that she got in her recent divorce. Maxandra wants a different kind of dance extravaganza to shake up London, and Magic Mike – with new cast of hunky male hoofers – is just the man to deliver.

“No woman wants to be suffocated by testicles.” This pearl of wisdom comes from Salma Hayek Pinault who plays grand dame Maxandra in Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third (and presumably final) instalment in Channing Tatum’s stripper franchise. Maxandra has coaxed our hero, down-on-his-luck former stripper Mike Lane (Tatum), to London with the promise of 60,000 and the opportunity to direct his very own erotic dance show. But Maxandra’s vision, which quickly becomes Mike’s vision, too, is one of relatively chaste refinement. The aggressive air-humping and up-close gyrating of the former films are – for the most part – nowhere to be seen, replaced by ballet and interpretive modern dance.
But is “suffocation by testicles” not the very heart and soul of the Magic Mike franchise? Is that not the joy? Maxandra talks a good game about how liberating it is to be on the receiving end of a Mike Lane lap dance.

Salma Hayek has revealed that Channing Tatum almost “killed” her during a Magic Mike lap dance.
The pair star in the third and final film in the series, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, which sees Tatum’s lead character team up with a wealth socialite (Hayek) to bring a stage show to London.
In one scene, Mike showcases his lap dancing skills for Hayek’s character, which, according to the star, almost ended fatally.
“You know, this one part that’s not in it is where I’m upside down, and my legs had to be somewhere,” she said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday (30 January).
“But upside down, one loses sense of direction, and I didn’t do what I was supposed to do. So in the rehearsal, I went like, head down, almost hit my head.”

It wasn’t just Channing Tatum who had to bare all during “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.”
Co-star Salma Hayek revealed that her role was also “physically challenging,” especially when it came to the steamy lap dance sequence teased in the trailer. Hayek plays a wealthy socialite who partners with “Magic” Mike (Tatum) for a London burlesque show. Of course, the duo is also romantically involved as Mike shows off his moves and lifts Hayek out of her seat.
“It’s very physically challenging,” Hayek told Entertainment Tonight about mastering the sequence. “My goodness. You just wait to see. It’s just complicated.”
As for her role in “Last Dance,” Hayek could only tease that she plays a “strong woman” and enjoyed every second of production.
“You know what was my day going into the office? I would just sit around and watch, like, 12 men, semi-naked dancing and doing pirouettes,” Hayek said.

If you thought We Are Not Alone was going to be the kind of comforting comedy you get from Ghosts you’ll quickly find out you’re wrong. The opening scene, in which the main character Stewart ends up suddenly covered in his best friend’s innards after he gets crushed by an alien messaging device, is a pretty big clue that this is a departure into a slightly more grown-up territory.
This new feature-length Dave comedy doesn’t waste any time: we’re straight into the action, discovering Earth has been invaded and conquered by the Gu’uns, a blue, large-foreheaded alien race with Very Big Guns. The Gu’uns don’t muck about – their takeover has included blowing up New Zealand, nixing everyone’s mobile phone signal and blasting the Chancellor of England into space (so it’s not all bad news), and in a brief appearance from...

Channing Tatum returns as “Magic” Mike Lane for a last fling and dance in London in the trailer for Warner Bros.’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance comedy that dropped on Tuesday.
Finding himself broke and bartending in Florida, Lane hooks up with a wealthy socialite, played by Salma Hayek Pinault, who lures him to London with an offer he can’t refuse, and an agenda all her own. “People are numb, disconnected. We’re going to wake them up with a wave of passion they’ve never felt before,” Hayek Pinault says at one point in the trailer to describe the dance show spectacular that Magic Mike will headline.
Lane has to then whip a new dance troupe into shape to succeed, or fail, with his latest business venture. The threequel sees Tatum return to his signature role as a male stripper...

It may be Magic Mike’s last dance, but Channing Tatum is going out with more than bang.
The third “Magic Mike” film, “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” debuted its trailer featuring Tatum teasing a titillating onstage performance as the titular erotic dancer. Per the official synopsis, “Magic” Mike Lane (Tatum) takes to the stage again after a lengthy hiatus, following a business deal that went bust, leaving him broke and taking bartender gigs in Florida. For what he hopes will be one last hurrah, Mike heads to London with a wealthy socialite (Salma Hayek Pinault) who lures him with an offer he can’t refuse…and an agenda all her own.
With everything on the line, once Mike discovers what she truly has in mind, will he — and the roster of hot new dancers he’ll have to whip into shape — be able to pull it off?

Michael Palin will be The Green Man, creator of the scarecrows, in the Mackenzie Crook adaptation of “Worzel Gummidge.” The specials will be a modern retelling of the classic stories of the eponymous walking, talking scarecrow. Kew Media has landed the distribution rights and will sell the series internationally.
“The Office” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” star Crook is writing, directing, and taking the title role in the drama, which will play on BBC One later this year in two one-hour installments. “It’s a lovely part for me, but the whole script is very memorable and touching, and very funny,” Palin said. “It quite skillfully weaves in something for everybody all the time.”
Barbara Euphan Todd wrote the Worzel Gummidge books, which were the basis for a classic British series starring Jon Pertwee in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Leopard Pictures has partnered with Treasure Trove Productions and...

Point Blank
Stars: Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Marcia Gay Harden, Stuart F. Wilson, Buster Reeves, Christian Cooke, Teyonah Parris, Boris McGiver, Reggie Willis, Shanessa Sweeney, Nik Pajic, Markice Moore | Written by Adam G. Simon | Directed by Joe Lynch
Point Blank, directed by Joe Lynch, is a remake of Fred Cavayé’s À bout portant, which was originally released in 2010. The film stars two actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie as Abe and Paul, respectively. Paul has to break Abe out of custody in a hospital as his brother has taken Paul’s pregnant wife hostage. What commences is an unorthodox buddy-action comedy, in what is sadly yet another dull and tedious action-adventure.
It is hard to watch Point Blank and not debate why this was made, or even distributed by Netflix. Everything from its plot, actors and actress, or even filmmaking evokes a sense of direct-to-dvd nature.

Dawn French is to star in Doc Martin-style drama Glass Houses for ITV.
The British commercial broadcaster has ordered the six-part series from Genial Productions, the nascent ITV-backed producer formed by The Durrells and Men Behaving Badly writer Simon Nye and ex-Tiger Aspect boss Sophie Clarke-Jervoise.
Created and written by Shameless and Cold Feet writer Mark Brotherhood, Glass Houses is set in a picturesque small coastal town with a close-knit community. It follows the stories and fall out for Maggie Connors, played by French, who doesn’t pay attention to the cautionary adage that ‘those in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones’.
Connors is a central character in town who makes it her business to know a bit about everyone’s lives. When a radio journalist interviews her for a small reportage piece about local life she gives him far more detail (and embellishment) about the locals and their...
