Has four children: Devin, Ryan, McKenzie and Connor. Connor was killed by a drunk driver in 2012 when he was 21 years old. His devastated parents later created and named their concrete cutting company after him. It's called Connor Concrete Cutting & Coring.

Parents, Leroy and Bonnie Penhall, were tragically killed when the plane his father was piloting crashed in 1975.

In the '80s it was reported that his father bought property in Orange County and had a full size dirt race track built so Bruce could practice on it. Before getting a role in the TV series "CHIPS" for one year, he spent his time participating in car races and boat races.

On the latter part of the sixth season of Chips (1977), Penhall's Bruce Nelson became the new partner to Erik Estrada's Frank Poncherello when Tom Reilly's role of Bobby Nelson was significantly reduced.

He was the World Motorcycle Speedway champion of 1981-1982. Rode for the Cradley Heath (England) Heathens speedway team.
