Long time vaudevillian from St. Louis, Sam Patterson started out as a partner with ragtime pianist Louis Chauvin in a song and dance act. Patterson would make his way to New York City where for years he worked closely with Scott Joplin. A fixture of the Harlem music scene, he was a band leader, businessman, teacher and showman.
