The national film body is behind a Us tour this autumn of 10 new comedies without Us distribution.
Former MoMA senior curator of film Laurence Kardish selected the films, which will arrive in New York and travel to Los Angeles and additional markets.
The Canada Cool tour runs from throughout the autumn and kicks off in New York on September 18 with the premiere of Robert Cohen’s Being Canadian (pictured) at Cinema Village.
The other titles are: Ingrid Veninger’s Animal Project; Shayne Ehman and Seth Scriver’s Asphalt Watches; Jeffrey St Jules’ Bang Bang Baby; and Émile Gaudreault’s Fathers And Guns (De Père En Flic).

A married couple attempt to rob a house while making a door-to-door sales call: one pitches the customer, the other fakes a trip to the washroom and searches for valuables. When their cover is blown, the husband bludgeons the man to death with a glass candy dish, and sticks a broom in the woman’s wheelchair spokes before ramming Milk-Bones down her throat. What villains! And all in the name of becoming the top sales team in the nation—that is until they’re gunned down by police at the National Sales Awards ceremony: a pitch-perfect ending to their violent crime wave.
The above is one of many zany and creative ideas Steven Penny (played by writer, director, producer, John Paizs) has for a color crime film he wants to make. The only problem is that he has no middle.

Campy Histrionics at Their Most Mediocre
Canadian director Jeffrey St. Jules has demonstrated an aptitude for experimenting with the cinematic form and creating hyper-realized, wildly stylized environments in his short film work. With his feature film debut, Bang Bang Baby, he’s created a similarly idiosyncratic, insulated world that ultimately succumbs to an inability to account for the demands of a longer, more involved and complex narrative.
The story, which blends the faux-aspirational insincerity of the American Dreams/American Idol ethos and the fever-dream sensibilities of Mulholland Drive, is an amalgam of all things pertaining to the 1960s. Stepphy (Jane Levy), a whimsical, idealistic high school student with a penchant for crooning, looks to an American televised singing competition as her mode of escape from small town Canadian life. The ninth-annual International Financing Forum (Iff), a feature co-financing market for English-language projects, will run Sept 7-8 during Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 4-14).
The two-day event includes one-on-one meetings, an industry panel discussion, roundtable meetings, a networking luncheon, and a producers’ opening night networking reception.
Iff partners include Telefilm Canada, UK Trade and Investment (Ukti), and Toronto Film Commission & Entertainment Industries.
Among this year’s international projects are:

New work by Sturla Gunnarsson, Denys Arcand, Ruba Nadda and Xavier Dolan are among the selection set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) next month.
“These are filmmakers at the top of their craft, bringing fresh perspectives to traditional genres like comedies and less traditionally Canadian genres, such as musicals,” said Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) senior programmer Steve Gravestock. “This year’s slate truly showcases the diversity of talent in our country, featuring films from coast to coast.”
“We are inspired by the number of exceptional debut features from Canadian directors, reflecting the depth of talent in this country,” said Tiff’s Canadian features programmer Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo.
“Extremely exciting is also the fact that female-driven narratives play a significant part in this year’s programming, highlighting the strong, rich tapestry of our storytelling.”

Another Ottawa International Festival of Animation has wrapped, and a recent move to the vicinity has finally allowed me to attend the legendary event, the largest in Canada of its kind, and renowned internationally as a launching pad for many up-and-coming animators. The industry section of the festival alone - a robust conference that facilitates interaction between animation studios, schools and budding talent - makes the festival unique, but at the head of it all is Artistic Director Chris Robinson, eccentric animation scholar whose curatorial preference for underdog animation ensures that Oiaf stays vital and exciting.
Going through last year's schedule, I was a bit worried that the programming was going mainstream, but any doubts were allayed by this year's feature competition (which forewent some obvious choices - the new Svankmajer, for example - in favour of more personal, low budget productions) and various indie-focused retrospectives.

Before Google, there was Factsheet 5.
Factsheet 5 was a magazine published in the ’80s and ’90s that listed about a gazillion hand-produced, personal ‘zines in every issue. It came out a couple times a year and, if you were interested in zines, it was like discovering the Holy Grail each and every time.
You’d pour through each issue, highlight a couple zines that sounded cool, send off a couple of bucks to each publisher, then wait a few weeks for the goodies to arrive in your mailbox. That might sound like a long, irritating process in these Internet instant opinion days, but it was quite fun and it was one of the only ways at the time to commune with people who had similar interests as yours all over the country.
