French director Laurent Cantet, who won the Cannes Palme d’Or in 2008 for The Class, has died at the age of 63.
Based on the semi-autobiographical book by writer François Bégaudeau about his experiences working as a literature teacher in an inner city school in Paris, The Class featured a mainly unprofessional cast including the author.
Cantet had been due to shoot his next film Enzo, with Elodie Bouchez and Pierfrancesco Favino in the cast, this August
His second collaboration with Anatomy of a Fall producer Marie-Angle Luciani, after 2021 film Arthur Rambo, it revolved around a teenager who embarks on a mason apprenticeship in the South of France to escape a controlling father.
Cantet studied film at the Institut des Hautes Études Cinématographiques (Idhec) in Paris in the mid-1980s, where his contemporaries were Dominik Moll, Gilles Marchand and Robin Campillo.

One-time fans who perhaps remember comedian Jon Stewart only taking satirical swipes at conservatives while host of The Daily Show were shocked and aggrieved when he returned to host the program after almost nine years on Monday to take aim at President Joe Biden.
During an “Indecision 2024” segment that anchored the first half of the show, Stewart aired exasperation over Donald Trump and Biden being the oldest-ever candidates for president, breaking a record they themselves set in the 2020 election. (In his usual self-deprecating style, he also took a moment to...

Wil Wheaton has unloaded on Larry David for the Curb Your Enthusiasm star’s on-air Elmo attack.
The Star Trek: The Next Generation actor posted an intense 900-word essay on Facebook about the purportedly unscripted viral stunt, where David throttled the ever-cheerful and child-like Sesame Street icon live on NBC’s Today during a segment on mental health, and then told viewers “somebody had to do it.” David was prodded into apologizing for the incident, but he did so seemingly reluctantly and with a smile.
Wheaton had a strong reaction to the footage and revealed he was abused in a similar way growing up. His rant has made some reexamine last week’s incident — which was largely greeted with amusement online — while others are mocking the actor as “profanely oversensitive.”

Welcome to a thoughtful exploration of the Netflix film Blonde, which has stirred quite the conversation since its release. The film, based on Joyce Carol Oates’s novel, was meant to delve into the life of the iconic Marilyn Monroe. Yet, it sparked immediate controversy among audiences and critics alike. As we unpack the reasons behind this divisive reception, let’s consider each aspect with a measured perspective. Blonde’s Graphic Content Raises Eyebrows The explicit content of Blonde has been a significant factor in its controversial reception. "I always felt that I could tell stories that other people were not telling." Greenwich Ent. has unveiled their official trailer for a documentary film titled Joyce Carol Oates: A Body in the Service of Mind, a comprehensive biopic film about the life of and books by the famed author Joyce Carol Oates. Swedish director Stig Björkman approached Jco with his idea to make a portrait film of her for over 9 years before she finally agreed. The doc film takes us behind the genius of one of the most read contemporary American writers. The now 83-year-old writer’s life story is one of a changing society. With her work as a navigator the movie takes us back to her childhood and university years. We learn about societal events that affected her deeply and are evident in her writing, like the 1960’s riots in Detroit, to the tragic Chappaquiddick incident and the life of Marilyn Monroe.

For more than two decades, the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff) has been a draw for genre filmmakers from across the globe and a pull for Swiss youth. Heading into its 22nd edition, which runs June 30 – July 8, the lakeside event will once again showcase the kind outré and audacious fare that Neuchatel’s reliable and devoted young public has come to expect, while continuing to bridge outward, welcoming more unfamiliar faces into the fold.
“By instinct, influence, and mutual attraction, genre cinema will always appeal to the young,” says Nifff director Pierre-Yves Walder. “In fact, Nifff attracts one of the youngest publics of any Swiss festival, but I’d like to convert different audiences of perhaps different ages as well. And not just for commercial reasons; I find it so interesting and essential to mix things up.”

As is tradition, the Golden Raspberry Awards announced its winners on Oscar weekend. The Razzies, now in their 43rd year, are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that “honor” the worst films of the year. Scroll down for the full list of winners (and nominees) in all nine Razzie Awards categories ranging from Worst Picture to Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel.
Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde,” reaped a leading eight bids and won two: Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay for director Andrew Dominik. The film’s star, Ana de Armas, was not nominated here but reaped a Best Actress bid at the Oscars.
Conversely, two-time Oscar champ Tom Hanks was overlooked by the academy for his portrayal of Colonel Tom Parker in “Elvis” but he won two Razzies: Worst Supporting Actor and Worst Screen Combo for “Tom Hanks & His Latex-Laden Face (and That Ludicrous Accent).”

Blonde has been “honored” with two Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — which also bestowed an award upon themselves for the first time in the group’s history.
Andrew Dominik’s film, which led the Razzies with eight nominations, won worst picture of the year along with worst screenplay for Dominik. The Razzies called the film “misogynistic, salacious and fallacious” and said it “shamelessly exploits the memory of the late Marilyn Monroe.”
The Razzie Awards, which honor the worst of the year, are announced annually ahead of the Oscars ceremony, which takes place Sunday. Incidentally, Blonde star Ana de Armas is up for best actress in a leading role at the 2023 Academy Awards.
Razzie organizers also chastised themselves for nominating 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong as worst actress of the year. After being “put through the cyberworld blender,” as they put it, they subsequently removed her from the ballot and announced...

Ana de Armas’ casting in Blonde was an intriguing risk from the get-go — she even says so herself: “It was against all odds that a Cuban actress was ever going to play Marilyn Monroe.” Add to that the nature of writer-director Andrew Dominik’s script — adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel, which does not shy away from speculation or the imagined darker, violent parts of Monroe’s life — and the movie was all but guaranteed to cause a stir.
When Blonde premiered at the Venice International Film Festival over the summer, the Nc-17-rated film garnered a 14-minute standing ovation, though reception to the movie since has been decidedly more polarized. Some critics and audiences have taken issue with the film’s creative liberties with Monroe’s story, including scenes of sexual assault and graphic violence. “Can you see her? [...] Only in the mirror I could see myself. [...] Look, Norma Jeane. There she is. Your magic friend.“ While looking at Marilyn Monroe standing in front of the mirror, bare in the lustful embrace of Cass Chaplin (played by Ana de Armas and Xavier Samuel respectively), one might indeed reflect on Cass’s words: can we really see her? We may have the perfect recreations of iconic shots and images, but did we really get to see the person behind the lushly veiled appearances? Regardless of what your answer may be, the implications of both positive and negative answers reach two equally terrible conclusions.

Although Marilyn Monroe never got the chance to achieve Screen Actors Guild Awards recognition, her legacy has been honored by the organization in the form of multiple Best Actress notices for women who have embodied her on the big screen. 11 years after Michelle Williams was nominated for playing Monroe in “My Week with Marilyn,” Ana de Armas has earned a spot in the current lead female lineup for her take on the classic movie star in “Blonde.” Since SAG voters have feted several portrayals of iconic actors before, she stands a good chance of going all the way.
De Armas, Danielle Deadwyler (“Till”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) make up a first-time nominee majority in this year’s Best Film Actress SAG Award lineup, although Yeoh is a past ensemble contender for “Crazy Rich Asians” (2019). Many an older film discovery will inspire revelations of “She’s in this?” — but none quite like the 1996 indie “Foxfire.” A cult classic beloved by queer audiences, “Foxfire” features early performances not only from Angelina Jolie, but singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis and queer icon and model Jenny Shimizu. It is also, famously (for those who care about these kinds of things), the project that introduced Jolie and Shimizu, who had a serious relationship throughout the late ’90s.
Based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, “Foxfire” follows five high school girls who take revenge on an abusive teacher, unwittingly forming a misfit crew of renegade feminists. They are radicalized by a hitchhiking firebrand who appears out of thin air, played by a young Jolie in motorcycle boots and an androgynous messy bob. Though she had done a few films prior, “Foxfire” established the magnetic bad girl type (and forever queer thirst...

Ana de Armas has certainly had an impressive career so far. The Cuban-Spanish beauty has starred in Knives Out and No Time to Die. Recently, de Armas portrayed Marilyn Monroe in the 2022 movie Blonde. Her roles are diverse and showcase her range well.
De Armas has been nominated for several awards over the years, and she’s even won a few. However, many movie buffs were surprised when she received her biggest nomination yet: Best Actress.
Since the 2023 Academy Awards nominees were announced, there has been quite a buzz over De Armas getting nominated — and not all of it has been positive.

Receiving an Oscar nomination is a huge honor that many A-list actors never get to see. And De Armas, who was nominated for Blonde, faces stiff competition.

Razzie Awards: ‘Blonde’ Leads Noms With Eight; Tom Hanks Lands Two Mentions for ‘Pinocchio,’ ‘Elvis’
The Golden Raspberry Awards — aka the Razzies — have bestowed Blonde with eight nominations, including worst picture, in their annual picks for the worst films and performances of the year.
In their announcement, Razzie organizers said the movie “‘explores’ the exploitation of Marilyn Monroe…by continuing to exploit her posthumously.” Blonde also landed noms for worst screenplay and worst director for Andrew Dominik, “whose work here says more about him than it does about his subject,” the Razzies said.
Also landing multiple noms are Tom Hanks and Pete Davidson, who are both up for worst actor and worst supporting actor. Hanks was cited for his portrayal of Gepetto in Disney’s Pinocchio and his “latex-laden, ludicrously accented portrayal of Col. Tom Parker in the otherwise critically acclaimed Elvis,” while Davidson was singled out for his voice role in Marmaduke and his cameo in Good Mourning.

If you thought the Razzie Awards learned a lesson last year about bullying, decency and humanity when they graciously rescinded an “award” they’d given to Bruce Willis due to his failing health, you’d be dead wrong. This year’s Golden Raspberry “honorees” include a 12-year-old girl (wait — how is that okay?) in Worst Actress, Ryan Kiera Armstrong (“Firestarter”). Also recognized is movie star Tom Hanks in Worst Actor (“Disney’s Pinocchio”) and Worst Supporting Actor (“Elvis”) — he of course is a two-time Oscar winner for “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994). Joyce Carol Oates is calling out Steven Spielberg in an influencer feud we did not have on our 2023 bingo card.
Amid the awards season circuit where the adaptation of Oates’ fictionalized portrait of Marilyn Monroe, “Blonde,” and Spielberg’s autobiographical epic “The Fabelmans” are both making the rounds, Oates shared her film review for Spielberg’s personal feature.
“This was the most imaginative scene in ‘The Fabelmans,’ which was on the whole a remarkably mediocre movie for all its attention & the recent award,” Oates tweeted with a photo of David Lynch as director John Ford following “The Fabelmans” Golden Globes win. “Must be discouraging for young filmmakers.”

Whoopi Goldberg is protecting her legacy, in this life and the next. Even after death, the actress and TV personality won’t have to worry about people trying to tell her life story without permission.
Recently, Goldberg, 67, was discussing the controversial Marilyn Monroe biopic “Blonde”, from director Andrew Dominik, during an episode of “The View”.
The film — based on the fictionalized biography of Monroe, penned by Joyce Carol Oates — has come under fire for its brutal portrayal of the movie icon’s life, and has been decried by many critics and detractors as misogynistic.
Amid the conversation, co-host Sunny Hostin said she believes that many people would be interested in making unauthorized posthumous biopics about Goldberg in the future.
“I was speaking to Whoopi, and I was saying that she’s such a famous person that when she passes away, people are going to make films,” Hostin shared.

Stephen King's novella "The Mist" was originally published in 1980 as part of a horror compilation called "Dark Forces." The impressive compilation included stories by Ray Bradbury, Edward Gorey, Joyce Carol Oates, and Robert Bloch, along with several others. "Dark Forces" was notable in the horror community, and it was widely read by other horror authors. In the 1985 interview book "Faces of Fear," Clive Barker noted "Dark Forces" as the push he needed to start writing his own "Books of Blood."
"The Mist" was easily the standout of the compilation, and would eventually be adapted to film in 2007 by Frank Darabont. The film, like the novella, tells the story of a mysterious fog that rolls in across a small, rural community, cutting off all visibility. Hiding in the mist are unseen creatures. Enormous bugs and land octopodes appear from nowhere and attack the locals. The bulk of Darabont's film takes...

Even six decades after her untimely passing, Marilyn Monroe’s stardom has never faded. As the interest in her pop culture iconography continues to surge, so does the level of public respect for her talent. Her ubiquity puts any actress who portrays her under automatic scrutiny, as “Blonde” star Ana de Armas can certainly attest. Her embodiment of the seminal movie star in the Netflix film was an undertaking she “knew from the beginning [would] be very challenging.” Watch her and several more members of the “Blonde” cast and crew expound on her transformation in the exclusive video feature above.
Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde” is adapted from the Joyce Carol Oates novel of the same name, which is a work of biographical fiction about the actress who was born Norma Jeane Mortenson. De Armas says her “passion for this project came from understanding Norma” and that she took care to find “moments where Norma was there,...

The movie Blonde is based on the bestselling novel of the same title by Joyce Carol Oates. I have a running time of 2hrs 46mins. It is a Netflix original that is primarily based on a fictitious narration of the thrilling life of Marilyn Monroe. Blonde takes the viewer on a turbulent, some would say, trigging and disturbing ride through the metamorphosis of Norma Jean into Marilyn Monroe. Ana de Armas plays the role of Marilyn in Blonde. Ana brings to Life Marilyn as she captures her essence and delivers a truly extraordinary performance. A pivotal point that viewers must

Blonde presents a singular vision of Norma Jeane Baker, the troubled soul who played host to Marilyn Monroe. The film makes no claim to being the definitive account of her life. Instead, in adapting Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name, director Andrew Dominik tells the story of a tragic figure who died by overdose at the age of 36.
Dominik presents the threads of this death in an experimental, expressionistic nightmare. The aspect ratio is redrawn throughout, narrowing and widening. The palette alternates between full colour and stark monochrome. There are numerous handheld moments, too, as well as various effects that range from the ghoulish to the arrestingly beautiful. All of this gothic visual splendour is scored by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, whose work is hauntingly ambient. Blonde is a truly aesthetic experience and perhaps the greatest example of Dominik’s dark, inventive artistry.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for both “Don’t Worry Darling” and “Blonde.”]
It’s been five years since the start of #MeToo, and mainstream Hollywood still doesn’t know what a truly feminist film looks like.
The releases of the highly debated, female-directed “Don’t Worry Darling” and the would-be awards darling that reimagines Marilyn Monroe’s trauma, “Blonde,” proved an even deeper issue when debating the gender politics of films: “Feminism” has been co-opted to the point of becoming meaningless. 2022 marked the Supreme Court overturn of Roe v. Wade… and also #MeToo film marketing jumping the shark.
Olivia Wilde’s off-the-rails press tour for “Don’t Worry Darling” started with the “Booksmart” helmer praising the film for being a beacon of female pleasure (spoiler: lead star Florence Pugh’s character is repeatedly raped in retrospect and cannot consent since she is chained to a bed and held captive unconscious). The much-publicized backlash that has surrounded Andrew Dominik’s Nc-17 biopic Blonde has had the surprising, simultaneous effect of elevating interest in another Marilyn Monroe project that might otherwise have slipped into the past. In 2001, pioneering female filmmaker Joyce Chopra shot a two-part TV miniseries for CBS, adapting the very same Joyce Carol Oates novel Dominik would later spend over a decade bringing to screen for Netflix.
Dominik’s harrowing, nearly three-hour telling of the Marilyn story has been widely criticized for its almost exclusive focus on the many traumas of the Hollywood icon’s life, and for devoting little interest to the episodes where she exercised undeniable agency and self-determination. As The Hollywood Reporter’s lead critic David Rooney put it in his review, “This is a treatise on celebrity and the sex symbol that blurs not only reality with fantasy but also empathy with exploitation.

Nick Cave has said Blonde is his “favourite film of all time”, disregarding the largely damning critical response surrounding the new Marilyn Monroe biopic.
The 65-year-old Australian singer worked alongside Warren Ellis to record the soundtrack for the Ana de Armas-led adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’s novel of the same name.
And despite “disgusted” viewers having already branded it “unwatchable” since its release on Netflix last month, Cave has proudly proclaimed it his “favourite” film.
In the latest edition of the singer-songwriter’s newsletter The Red Hand Files – in which fans can send questions to the star – he was asked: “What is your favourite film of all time?”
“Dear Sourav, Blonde. Love, Nick,” he responded.
In her one-star review, The Independent’s Jessie Thompson wrote that director Andrew Dominik’s movie “is degrading, exploitative and misogynist, yet mercilessly boring”.

You’d be forgiven for mistaking Andrew Dominik’s Blonde for a kind of religious ritual—“the Passion of the Marilyn,” as Leslie Felperin aptly describes it over at The Guardian. Based on Joyce Carol Oates’s 2000 novel of the same name, Dominik’s take on Monroe’s life puts its subject’s suffering front and center. An elliptical chronicle of the actress’s rise to planetary stardom and tragic fall, the film captures Monroe’s life as an endless slideshow of humiliations and traumas. Played by Ana de Armas, Dominik’s Marilyn saunters into Blonde as a sort of martyr, first wrestling with a schizophrenic mother and a miserable childhood, and then with a cannibalistic industry and throngs of brutalizing men who paved the way to her death by overdose at the age of 36. Rated Nc-17 for its graphic scenes of sexualized violence—featuring rapes, forced abortions, and degrading oral sex—the film,...

Being featured on the Netflix top 10 used to mean something.
It was a useful list that audiences could look to for recommendations. These were films you could trust to be good.
Needless to say, a lot has changed since then. Now, more often than not, reaching number one on Netflix isn’t necessarily something to be proud of.
As the hate-watching phenomenon continues to grow – in which viewers will binge watch something they admit is terrible – popularity on Netflix becomes less and less synonymous with quality.

Spooky Season is here!
In honor of the scariest time of the year, we’re honored to partner with some fantastic (and frightening) events throughout the month of October! Events include the New York City premiere of Bitch Ass, Ethereal Horror Fest in Austin, Texas, and more! Check out the schedule below!
In case she hasn’t won you over already, Florence Pugh is here to continue her reign over Hollywood in her latest film The Wonder.
“Florence Pugh constantly reminds us that she’s a force to be reckoned with. After her outstanding turn as Alice in Don’t Worry Darling (truly why you should see the film), Pugh has shown us yet again just how brilliant she is. She’s constantly bringing to life women who are being challenged by the men around them, and it seems like her latest film The Wonder from Netflix is falling into that category.

Few Netflix originals have received as much advance press and social media attention than Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” his adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ novel about Marilyn Monroe starring Ana de Armas. It would have been surprising had it not immediately risen to #1 on the streamer’s top 10 movie list — and it did. That lasted three days.
Facing critical backlash and less-than-stellar word of mouth, it’s now at #3. To add to the ignominy, what replaced it was the Gerard Butler thriller “Last Seen Alive,” which had a brief run as a direct-to-vod release in May.
In recent weeks, Netflix originals “Lou,” “End of the Road,” “Me Time,” Day Shift,” and “Look Both Ways” all spent more time atop its movie-watching chart. Some had stars like Kevin Hart, Mark Wahlberg, Queen Latifah, and Jamie Foxx to elevate them. De Armas is not the same boldface name, but her credits include “Knives Out,...

Saturday Night Live has left viewers in hysterics with its “perfect” parody of Nicole Kidman’s AMC commercial.
In 2021, the US theatre chain AMC, debuted a commerical starring the Oscar winner, which was quickly turned into a meme online.
In September earlier this year, a viral post showing a man in a cinema standing up and saluting to the advertisement went viral.
In its season premiere that aired on Saturday night (1 October), SNL writers took the opportunity to poke fun at the advertisement and the infamous salute.
In the skit, Chloe Fineman plays the Australian actor, putting on the actor’s accent in her performance.
As in the original ad, Fineman’s character enthuses about her love of the cinema, with everyone applauding and saluting. Only one person, played by SNL star Kenan Thompson, looks confused.

Mark Hamill has said Volodymyr Zelensky compared Russia to the “evil empire” in Star Wars.
The sci-fi star spoke with the Ukrainian president in September.
Hamill, 71, was asked about their meeting during an appearance on BBC’s Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg.
The actor recalled: “He did reference the movies and it’s not hard to understand why. Star Wars was always a fairytale for children and fairytales are morality tales of good versus evil, where good is clearly defined, evil is clearly defined.
“It’s not hard to extrapolate an evil Empire with Russia invading a sovereign nation. So it’s not surprising, and that’s probably what appealed to him about me.”
He said that their conversation “obviously” did not “dwell” on the subject of Star Wars.

Netflix users are being left particulary outraged by a “horrifying” scene in new Marilyn Monroe film Blonde.
The controversial new movie from director Andrew Dominik was adapted from Joyce Carol Oates’s fictional book about Monroe, which was released in 2001.
For some time now, the project, which stars Knives Out actor Ana de Armas, has been hyped up as being a shocking watch, with the film being handed an Nc-17 age certificate in the US.
For those in the UK, this is similar to an 18 – but American directors tend to try and edit their films in order to avoid the certificate as, when cinema releases are concerned, it typically equates to less money at the box office.

Planned Parenthood have criticised Netflix movie Blonde as “anti-abortion propaganda”.
The 18-rated film, based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, features many imagined scenes from the star’s life. It has attracted huge controversy since it was released on the streaming giant earlier this week.
Blonde is not a standard biopic, and people have criticised the film as “traumatic” viewing, arguing it is “exploitative” of Monroe, highlighting in particular the multiple scenes of sexual assault that occur throughout.
Many people have also singled out the movie’s treatment of abortion. Blonde depicts Monroe as having had two illegal abortions against her will.
In one scene that has been shared and criticised widely on social media, CGI is used to portray Monroe’s foetuses, which look like fully formed babies, speaking to her.
“You won’t hurt me this time, will you?” a foetus asks Monroe.

This article contains Blonde spoilers.
Throughout Blonde, writer-director Andrew Dominik’s surreal, dreamlike, and often downbeat film based on Joyce Carol Oates’ fictionalized novel of the same name, the woman named Norma Jeane Mortensen—known to the world as Marilyn Monroe—is haunted by the almost spectral presence of her unseen father.
Played by Ana de Armas, Norma Jeane never gets to meet her father, who her mother (Julianne Nicholson) hints is a reputable figure in Hollywood whose life and career cannot be tarnished by the existence of an illegitimate daughter. But as Norma Jeane gets older and becomes famous as Marilyn Monroe, she does get phone calls and letters, some loving, others scolding, from the man. He’s a mysterious voice in an unsigned letter who nevertheless insists that they will meet up one day soon.
The absence of her father is an overwhelming weight in Marilyn’s life.

“Blonde” author Joyce Carol Oates, who penned the biographical fiction novel that the Netflix film is based on, has weighed in on the discourse surrounding Andrew Dominik’s controversial portrait of Marilyn Monroe. On Friday, Oates answered some burning questions from fans via Twitter, including about backlash the film has received that it exploits Monroe’s trauma.
Dubbed a fictionalized retelling of the movie star’s life and untimely death, “Blonde” loosely recreates several tragedies during the life of Monroe (Ana de Armas), including the abuse she endured from her mother and the sexual assaults she experienced in Hollywood. In addition to fan outrage on social media, the movie has also been panned by several film critics, including The New York Times’ Manohla Dargis, who wrote in her review: “Given all the indignities and horrors that Marilyn Monroe endured during her 36 years, it is a relief that she didn’t...

“Blonde” has arrived on Netflix. The highly anticipated feature reimagines the life of screen legend Marilyn Monroe (played by “Knives Out” star Ana de Armas), based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates.
Despite receiving an 11-minute standing ovation when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival, “Blonde” has been deluged with negative reviews, with critics complaining that the movie sends the “Some Like it Hot” star from one horrifically traumatic experience to another, with Monroe portrayed as a victim from start to finish.
In the film, Monroe is depicted as being abused by numerous people, including husband Joe Dimaggio (played by Bobby Cannavale).

Writer/director Andrew Dominik adapts Blonde, the bestselling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, into a colossal beast of a tale that reimagines the life and times of Marilyn Monroe. Unfortunately, apart from a better-than-this film deserves performance from Ana de Armas, there is little to recommend this chaotic behemoth of a story.
Blonde begins with Monroe’s complicated childhood as Norma Jeane and progresses quickly and nonchalantly through her ascent to becoming one of Hollywood’s most enduring stars to get to the meat of what it is all about – the perils of stardom and the salacious sullying of Monroe’s memory.
While de Armas fairs better than most in Blonde, everyone involved is awash in the exploitative storytelling at work throughout the film. For a film that is purportedly concerned with addressing the evils of such exploitation and examining how such circumstances contributed to Miss Monroe’s tragic ending,...

Note: The following contains spoilers for the ending of “Blonde” and discussion of self-harm.
Filmmaker Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe film “Blonde” is now streaming on Netflix after years of anticipation and controversy, and when it comes to depicting Monroe’s demise at the end of the movie, Dominik had to make a decision about what he believed happened to her.
As the film comes to a close, Ana de Armas’ Marilyn Monroe is in a fragile emotional state when she receives a package from former lover Cass (Xavier Samuel), which he left to her when he died. The box contains a memento from her childhood and a letter which reads, “There never was a Tearful father,” suggesting all those letters she received from her “father” were from him.
Monroe is heartbroken, and the film then shows her taking an overdose of pills, after which she dies. The closing shot...

Many may believe Blonde to be a standard biopic about Monroe, but the opposite is true: due to the source material, the film features several imagined scenes from the Hollywood star’s life,...

Netflix has finally released its controversial Marilyn Monroe drama Blonde – but some viewers have complained that the film is “unwatchable”.
Many viewers specified on social media that they had been unable to make it more than 20 minutes into Blonde before abandoning it.
The 18-rated movie, based on the novel of the same name by Joyce Carol Oates, stars Ana de Armas as Monroe. It has divided critics, with particular scrutiny being levelled at the film’s harrowing depiction of trauma and sexual assault.
In a one-star review for The Independent, Jessie Thompson wrote: “Blonde is not a bad film because it is degrading, exploitative and misogynist, even though it is all of those things. It’s bad because it’s boring, pleased with itself and doesn’t have a clue what it’s trying to say.”
Other viewers have piled in on Twitter, condemning the film’s failings.

Dir: Andrew Dominik. Starring: Ana de Armas, Julianne Nicholson, Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale. Cert 18, 165 minutes
Never mind the diamonds. I’ll tell you who isn’t a girl’s best friend: Andrew Dominik, the writer-director of Blonde, a merciless, dull, over-long riff on Marilyn Monroe. Across its lengthy running time, the Hollywood star has a time of it. She is nearly drowned by her mother. Raped at an audition. Forced into an abortion. Harangued by the unborn foetus she’s about to abort. Attacked by a husband she calls “daddy”. It’s no exaggeration to say that she cries in almost every scene. To borrow a phrase, if you can’t handle Marilyn Monroe as an adult woman in possession of agency, you sure as hell don’t deserve to make an almost-three-hour film about her.

As a teenager, Julianne Nicholson was a Marilyn Monroe “fangirl”. The Emmy-winning star of Mare of Easttown and the jungle thriller Monos devoured every book she could find on her. She watched her films, listened to compilation albums of her songs, had photographs of her taped up in her locker. “I was obsessed,” she recalls. “I thought she was so beautiful and tragic and kind of unknowable.” Now, a few decades later, she’s playing her mother in a movie so incendiary that everyone involved – including star Ana de Armas – has been forced to rush to its defence. Nicholson, to her credit, admits that it won’t be for everyone. Particularly those who don’t want to see her as a child abuser in the grips of schizophrenia.
If Blonde is a Marilyn Monroe biopic that’s been doused in petrol and set on fire, Nicholson plays the match that ignites it.
