*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's publicity arm. Director: Ryûhei Kitamura. Writers: Ryûhei Kitamura, Joey O'Bryan. Cast: Kelly Connaire, Stephanie Pearson and Rod Hernandez. Japanese director Ryûhei Kitamura is known to this film fan for his work on The Midnight Meat Train (2008) and No One Lives (2012). Both of these earlier horror films are dark, gory spectacles. Kitamura continues his trend, to bring bloody scenarios to the screen, with Downrange. Six college students are trapped along the side of the road as a sniper takes aim at them. They are one bullet away from becoming roadkill. The film's plot is very bare bones; Downrange is more of a scenario, than a typical story. Downrange is also similar to other films, like Joel Schumacher's Phone Booth (2002) and Doug Liman's The Wall (2017). The focus is on the victim and their psychology as the villain remains anonymous.

Kitamura Ryuhei cemented his place in the genre hall of fame with Versus back at the turn of the century. Since then he's found himself in and out of favor with fans as he made the likes of Aragami, Agumi, Godzilla: Final Wars, The Midnight Meat Train (my personal high of that year), and others. Soon he'll be returning to delight his fans with Downrange. Scripted by Joey O'Bryan (Fulltime Killer, Motorway, and more, and a personal friend, too), the film is based on a story by O'Bryan and Kitamura. Per the official statement: "In the film, six college students are carpooling cross-country when one of their tires blows out on a desolate stretch of country road. Getting out to fix the flat, they quickly...

Full of tales of demonic dogs, zombie wars, cursed violins and much, much more, Dark Delicacies II is a bloody good time, with only a few stumbling missteps.
This review will focus on a few of the macabre highlights, before, briefly, mentioning some of the more avoidable tales, in this series.
