There’s a common misconception that art directed towards children is automatically less dignified than art aimed at other demographics. And with so many people mistakenly believing that animation is exclusively meant to entertain kids, it makes sense that audiences and critics often dismiss animated films as if it were impossible for them to contain anything of substance. Of course, the simplest stories are often the hardest ones to tell, and having your film be marketed towards kids doesn’t mean that it should feel like it was written by them.
One of my personal favorite examples of an animated movie that delves into much deeper (and darker) subject matter than your average cartoon is Don Bluth’s directorial debut, The Secret of Nimh. A dark fantasy fable about talking mice, this 1982 adaptation of Robert C. O’Brien’s Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh takes fascinating liberties with the...

From an early age, animator Don Bluth was a great admirer of Disney and has said in interviews that as a child, he would practice drawing by copying old Disney comic books. This childhood activity led to him being hired by Disney to work on their feature film version of "Sleeping Beauty" in the mid-1950s. After a stint doing missionary work and animating for various TV shows, Bluth returned to Disney in the mid-'70s to work on the company's version of "Robin Hood." Bluth worked on various animated features for Disney, eventually rising to the role of animation director for the 1977 film "Pete's Dragon." Over the course of working for Disney, however, Bluth became kind of disillusioned with the way the company owned all of their animators' work, and how animators were all trained to draw and animate the same way. Bluth left Disney in 1979 to form his own production company.

A new animated series based on the "Rats of Nimh" books by Robert C. O'Brien is reportedly in the works at Fox. The first book in the series was previously adapted in the 1982 Don Bluth film "The Secret of Nimh," which has gone on to become a cult favorite.
While the details are still a little fuzzy, it appears that Fox is going to make a series based on the novels about some super-smart rats and their fellow field-dwelling friends. Deadline reports that the network has handed a script commitment to the series, currently referred to as "Nimh".

In a January 2020 TCA interview with Deadline, Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn spoke about the network’s animation development and production ramp-up as part of “preparing for that day” when the network would say goodbye to The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers, but he noted that there was “no immediate plan” to end the legacy series and that “we can extend these shows and keep these shows for as long as we like.”
Over the past year, Fox indeed extended all three veteran animated series, produced by 20th Television, for two additional seasons. But their very high cost as well as their ownership, which transferred to Disney in the merger, still raises the question of whether these could be the shows’ final renewals at Fox. The network has been actively launching new animated series and has high hopes that The Great North, a co-production with 20th Television, could achieve the success of The Simpsons,...

A new film version of Mrs. Brisby and the Rats of Nimh is on the way, but with a bit of a twist...
Don Bluth's The Secret Of Nimh is one of those classic animated movies that gave some sensitive children of the 1980s nightmares. Based on the also kind of bleak children's book by Robert C. O'Brien, Mrs Brisby And The Rats of Nimh, the film version might be the high point of Don Bluth's impressive animated output. It's worth a look if you haven't seen it.
So of course there's a remake on the way from MGM, apparently now known as The Rats Of Nimh, with James Madigan making his directorial debut, according to Variety. The approach here will be a live action/CGI hybrid film.
Michael Berg (the Ice Age movies) is writing the script. When we first heard about this project,...

Director: Craig Zobel. Writers: Nissar Modi and Robert C. O'Brien. Cast: Margot Robbie, Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Z for Zachariah is a novel adaptation. The film takes place in a post-apocalyptic Christian paradise, in which a young religious woman struggles with loneliness. Loneliness is the least of her problems when two men enter her life. Here, the film's Christian themes become predominant and an Adam an Eve storyline is brought into the play. The Devil wins again and one character is tempted into murder, while another is tempted by lust. This dramatic film offers a sombre tone and very strong performances. Z for Zachariah is a compelling film and recommended to fans of the genre. The film begins with Ann (Margot Robbie). Lilith, Eve or Ann is busy farming and looking after herself, in a remote valley. An undefined catastrophic nuclear event has irradiated everything outside of this idyllic...

Face it, the Earth in its present form is surely doomed because of climate change or terrorists with nukes or unstoppable viruses or some combination of the above. Pick your poison, folks. But the flood of post-apocalyptic films doesn’t seem to be helping us change our ways. As Brad Bird’s messed-up but underestimated Tomorrowland argued, moviegoers have become positively turned on by visions of the planet’s demise. Culturally, we have learned to stop worrying and love the bomb.Even if you’re sick of end-of-the-world films, though, you might make an exception for Z for Zachariah, a delicately calibrated, pointedly unsensational triangle drama anchored by Chiwetel Ejiofor in a frighteningly complex performance. Adapted by Nissar Modi from Robert C. O'Brien’s widely read Ya novel (before we called them Ya novels), director Craig Zobel’s movie is psychologically richer than its source. It’s set a long...

The premise is beautiful in its elegant simplicity - a woman is left alone in a world that has befallen a catastrophe. Her solitude is interrupted when a man appears, unsettling her life and making radical changes to her situation. Things begin to settle when a third person appears, unsettling the balance even further. Director Craig Zobel shocked audiences with his beautifully realized Compliance, but with Z for Zachariah I believe he has crafted something even more remarkable. The story, based on a 1974 novel by Robert C. O'Brien, feels at once highly contemporary and relevant and ancient, the very kind of parable that would fit within the Biblical motif. The symbolism the storyline plays with is sometimes arch, but that plays into the films...

Post-apocalyptic brother site Quiet Earth has posted the first trailer and official graphic for Z for Zachariah. The film, based on Robert C. O'Brien's novel, involves a love triangle, taking place after a nuclear war. From early reviews, the film also focuses on the fragility of human life. As well, the film stars Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street), Chris Pine and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The first trailer shows the characters, settings and conflicts; it is hosted below. As well, the above film poster has just been released today. The graphic hosts the usual praise, from sites such as Total Film and Twitch Film. The poster also displays a longish tagline: "after the end of the world, she thought she was alone. She was wrong." An official selection of Sundance 2015, the one-sheet also shows a nuclear hazard symbol, in the background. The character Ann (Robbie) is shown forefront, with...

Robert C. O'Brien's 1974 postapocalyptic thriller will finally be adapted to film with this year's Z for Zachariah, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. In its first trailer, Margot Robbie thinks she's the last person on Earth. That is, until she happens upon Chiwetel Ejiofor unknowingly bathing in unsafe water and saves him. For awhile they think they're the last two people on Earth, and things get cute. Then Chris Pine shows up, and exactly what you think would happen when there's only one woman for the two men left on Earth happens. Typical men.

There was quite a bit of furor over the release of the first clip from Craig Zobel's Z for Zachariah. And with good reason.
The movie, which stars Chris Pine, Margot Robbie and Chiwetel Ejiofor and is based on Robert C. O'Brien's classic novel of Pa survival, seems to have strayed pretty far from the source material and that has fans a little upset; especially considering what a landmark novel it is in the world of Pa fiction.
Zobel's adaptation appears to unfold like the story of two well intentioned men who both fall in love with the same woman and the drama that ensues from that. It may not be the material of the novel but Zobel has a great penchant for intense drama [Continued ...]...

I saw some harsh words as well as some good words for Z for Zachariah after its screening at Sundance earlier this year. The film serves as the follow-up to Compliance for director Craig Zobel, directing an adaptation of Robert C. O'Brien's post-apocalyptic novel, following a small-town girl (Margot Robbie) who survives a nuclear war. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine co-star. In the wake of a nuclear war, a young woman survives on her own, fearing she may actually be the proverbial last woman on earth, until she discovers the most astonishing sight of her life: another human being. A distraught scientist, he's nearly been driven mad by radiation exposure and his desperate search for others. A fragile, imperative strand of trust connects them. But when a stranger enters the valley, their precarious bond begins to unravel. Roadside has set an Aug. 21 release for the movie, check out the trailer below.

"There's gotta be an explanation..." Yes! Get a look at one of my favorite sci-fi features from Sundance this year. The first trailer for Z for Zachariah has debuted, the next film from Compliance director Craig Zobel, adapted from an old sci-fi novel by Robert C. O'Brien. Margot Robbie stars, playing one of the only survivors in a post-apocalyptic world, existing day-by-day in a valley untouched by radiation. One day she comes across Loomis, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Months later they come across Caleb, played by Chris Pine. This trailer does show quite a bit, so if you want to go into this fresh better not watch. But I really love this film and how many layers there are to it, so I say watch anyway. Just make sure you get a ticket to see it. Here's the first official trailer for Craig Zobel's Z for Zachariah, in high...

One of the films I was quite taken with at Sundance this year was Craig Zobel's latest, "Z For Zachariah," and now that we're six months into the year, it remains one of the films I've most enjoyed this year. It's a simple movie, and I get the feeling that fans of the Robert C. O'Brien novel may have some difficulty with the adaptation, but it packs a powerful punch thanks to Zobel's expert work with his trio of lead actors. Chris Pine is sly and insinuating in his role as the guy who stumbles into and potentially spoils a sort of post-world paradise that Margot Robbie and Chiwetel Ejiofor have made for themselves in a valley that was somehow skipped when the world ended. Ejiofor is going to break a lot of hearts with his work as the guy who liked being alone in the world, and who...

MGM has acquired the screen rights to Robert C. O'Brien children's book "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh".
Michael Berg ("Ice Age 5") is attached to pen the screenplay for this adaptation which will be a combination of live-action and CG animation ala "The Smurfs," along with being the first of a potential franchise.
The film will be something of a prequel to the original story and follows an imperiled mouse who befriends a comical crew of lab rats as they turn hyper-intelligent. They escape a secret laboratory and become the great minds of vermin civilization, forced to outwit the humans hot on their tails.
Daniel Bobker and Ehren Kruger will produce. Don Bluth helmed a previous screen adaptation, the 1982 animated feature "The Secret of Nimh".

If you couldn't tell from the reactions on social media, It was a very good year in Park City (well, at least on the narrative side). The 2015 Sundance Film Festival featured a dramatic competition with far fewer bad eggs than usual, a Next slate which once again got people excited, a number of the noncompetitive premieres that surprised (we're looking at you "Brooklyn"), two closing night films that were reportedly pretty good (a rare occurrence for any film festival) and acclaimed movies that landed distribution deals which you'll be talking about all year long. While we endeavored to post as many individual reviews as possible the intensity of Sundance often makes it quite difficult to review everything. Especially, when you've seen 23 1/2 movies over 8 days.* Therefore, this post will include a number of capsule reviews for films HitFix has not individually reviewed, my thoughts on films Drew McWeeny and Dan Fienberg...

Park City - Until this week, I didn't even know there was a book called "Z For Zachariah," much less that it was by the same author as the wonderful "Mrs. Frisby and The Rats Of Nimh." When we posted a clip from the new film adaptation of Robert C. I couldn't respond because I don't know the book at all, and to be honest, what matters to me is whether the film works on its own. You don't need to know a book to know whether or not a film plays, and in the case of "Z For Zachariah," the film most definitely plays. Craig Zobel, whose previous films...

Getting dressed never looked so good. Chris Pine was spotted on Tuesday putting on his top on the New Zealand set of his latest flick Z for Zachariah. The loose-fitting T-shirt didn't slide so easily over the 33-year-old's toned abs, thus leading to a glimpse of the actor's enviable torso. The blue-eyed scruffy star couldn't help but grin as he got ready for the scene. The Craig Zobel-directed film is based on Robert C. O'Brien's post- apocalyptic novel and also stars Margot Robbie and Chiwetel Ejiofor. In addition to accidentally showing off his fit physique, Pine was also recently named the new face of Armani Code. "Chris perfectly embodies the brand's...

Per THR's Heat Vision Blog, Aussie actress Robbie is in negotiations to replace Amanda Seyfried, originally set to star in the adaptation as Ann Burden, a teen who is seemingly the sole survivor of a nuclear war (she dropped out due to scheduling issues). Should Robbie sign, the character will be aged up a bit.

The apocalypse is terrifying at the best of times, but when the concept of oblivion hits you through young adult literature -- as the teens of today are finding out through "The Hunger Games," "Divergent," "The Knife Of Never Letting Go" et al -- it's almost guaranteed to lead to some sleepless nights. For a certain generation, that fear of radiation poisoning came from "Z For Zachariah," the 1974 novel by Robert C. O'Brien (who died before the book was completed). A stark and affecting two hander about Ann, a young woman who thinks she's the lone survivor of a nuclear war, only to discover a scientist, Loomis, alive, it's been a high-school favorite for nearly forty years, but other than a low-budget BBC adaptation, has never made it to the big screen. However, for some time now Tobey Maguire has been planning an adaptation through his Material Pictures banner, setting...

With Craig Zobel's shocker "Compliance" reigniting debate this week on the eve of its limited theatrical opening (it was met with wildly passionate reactions at Sundance earlier this year, as well), the writer-director is all the rage right now. Several critics have even likened him to Lars von Trier and Michael Haneke -- auteurs with the urge to provoke. Now Variety is reporting that his next film will star none other than the original Spider-Man himself, Tobey Maguire, who's also on board to produce the project. Read More: Why Every Screening of 'Compliance' Should Be Followed By a Q&A Session Titled "Z for Zachariah," the film is a post-apocalyptic drama based on the 1975 novel by Robert C. Director Craig Zobel turned heads earlier this year with his controversial film Compliance (out in limited release this Friday), but it appears he's taking on something a bit more conventional next. Variety reports that he'll direct Z For Zachariah, a post-apocalyptic story about a girl who lives alone and operates a farm in the last breathable section of a nuclear-ravaged land. Her world is rocked when two strangers stumble in from the forest, and Maguire plays a scientist that she nurses back to health. The story is based on Robert C. O'Brien's novel of the same name, and the script by Nissar Modi made the Black List back in '09. Read on! Maguire will produce as well as star, and this sort of project seems right in line with the type of material he's been working with lately. After the dismal Spider-Man 3, he's seemingly switched gears into being...

1.) While Rupert Sanders' future with the Huntsman sequel/spinoff seems to be up in the air, last night also brought some news that should put him at ease. Universal has purchased the rights to the book 90 Church: The True Story of the Narcotics Squad From Hell for him, so the studio hasn't completely lost faith in him. The '60s era crime flick centers on the Federal Bureau of Narcotics when it was formed in New York City to combat organized crime and drug traffic, and it could very well be his Snow White and the Huntsman follow-up. [Deadline] 2.) Compliance hits limited release this weekend, but it has already caused quite a stir just from its trailer and Sundance premier. Now director Craig Zobel has booked Tobey Maguire for his follow-up, the post-apocalyptic drama Z for Zachariah. The film is based on the novel by Robert C. O'Brien, which follows...

Well, here's a nice little reward for the rising director Craig Zobel. After coming to attention with his 2007 comedy "Great World Of Sound," the helmer made big waves this year with the unsettling thriller "Compliance." The film, essentially about a prank that goes to some very dark and twisted places, inspired impassioned responses from those who both loved and hated the film, and it seems that buzz has reached the ears of some pretty important folks. And as Zobel gears up a new film, he's got a pretty big name to help him make it happen. Tobey Maguire will star in and produce the post-apocalyptic drama "Z For Zachariah" which Zobel will direct. Based on the novel by Robert C. O'Brien, and adapted by Nissar Modi (Gary Ross' developing "Outback" with Carey Mulligan still attached to star and Maguire to produce) into a 2009 Black List script, the story follows...
