A couple of years ago, Edward Burns appeared in a TNT limited series called Mob City. It didn't perform very well in the ratings. Now, he's back on the network in a much bigger role -- as an actor, director, and writer. Will Public Morals be a success for Burns and the cable channel? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
Set in early 1960s New York City, Public Morals revolves around the professional and personal lives of the members of the NYPD's Public Morals Division. They enforce the vice laws that are still on the books but that no one wants to enforce -- prohibiting crimes like gambling and prostitution. The large cast includes Edward Burns, Michael Rapaport, Elizabeth Masucci, Katrina Bowden, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Wass Stevens, Keith Nobbs, Austin Stowell, Patrick Murney, Lyndon Smith, Brian Wiles, and Cormac Cullinane.

When Ed Burns was a kid, he remembers his relatives giving him pictures of his great grandfather, these grainy black-and-white shots that hinted at a wild, we-make-our-own-rules-here past. "He's standing on the roof of his place in Hell's Kitchen, with giant scissors in his hand," the writer-director says, sipping a Guinness in a Tribeca bar near his home. "And he's about to cut the ears of his champion fighting pitbull, this beast with a muzzle on. I asked my dad, what's the deal here exactly? Seems the old man was in the trucking business,...

When you think of Sundance, you probably think of the snowy, January-set film festival where so many important directors have gotten their start. But for many of those filmmakers, Sundance also has a summer component that’s just as important: Directors like Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Miranda Julyworkshopped their pivotal first projects at the Sundance Labs, which take place in Park City every year from May to August. With the Directors Lab just finished and the Screenwriters Lab currently ongoing, Vulture is happy to premiere some rare, exclusive photos of the famous alumni who developed their early films in those labs. Take a look!Long before Hedwig and the Angry Inch made its Tony Award–winning leap to Broadway, creator John Cameron Mitchell spent time at the Sundance Labs in 1999, adapting his off-Broadway production into a movie. That’s Mitchell on the right, discussing a scene with actor Keith Nobbs.

Lyndon Smith, Keith Nobbs, Wass Stevens and Elizabeth Masucci are set as series regulars in Ed Burns’ TNT pilot Public Morals, executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Written and directed by and starring Burns, Public Morals is set in 1967 in New York City’s Public Morals Division, where cops walk the line between morality and criminality as the temptations that come from dealing with all kinds of vice can get the better of them. It centers on cop Terry Muldoon (Burns), who knows the line between the good guys and bad guys is thin, and he is determined to raise his sons to be honest and hardworking as he deals with the dark underbelly of the vice world. Nobbs will play Pat Duffy, a troublemaker fresh from prison that everyone knows not to trust. Smith, repped by Buchwald & Assoc. and Main Title, will play Pat’s sister Deidre, a beautiful beatnik.

If only Lanford Wilson's autobiographical "Lemon Sky" were completely of its time, in 1950s suburbia.
If only young gay men didn't have to hide who they are and be shunned by their parents, then this could be seen as a snapshot of an uglier time.
Yet this play about coming of age and being gay in San Diego in the 1950s remains relevant. Wilson, who died this year, was a Pulitzer winner, one of the founders of the off-off-Broadway scene and wrote many plays including "The Hot L Baltimore," "5th of July" and "Balm in Gilead." The Keen Company mounts the revival of "Lemon Sky" at the Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row, and when Wilson's work is staged, there's reason to pay attention.
"Lemon Sky" is so raw in parts that it's painful to watch. Yet it's so well acted that it's riveting. Except when Alan breaks to talk to the audience,...

The Black Donnellys followed the story of four young brothers -- Catholic Irish-American siblings in New York's Hell's Kitchen. The story was told by unreliable narrator and Donnelly childhood friend Joey "Ice Cream" while being incarcerated. The series starred Jonathan Tucker, Thomas Guiry, Olivia Wilde, Billy Lush, Michael Stahl-David, Kirk Acevedo and Keith Nobbs. It was created by Crash's Paul Haggis and Robert Moresco.
This gritty drama debuted on February 26, 2007 on NBC and replaced the struggling Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. The initial episode lost almost 40% of its viewers by the end of the episode and things didn't get any better for subsequent episodes. It seemed that NBC really wanted to stick with the series but most of the rest of their schedule was performing poorly and the network pulled it after six episodes.
NBC streamed the rest of the episodes online and cable's HDNet has started airing the complete series.

It looks like the axe has fallen for the Paul Haggis/Bobby Moresco drama The Black Donnellys. But does it have to be replaced by a reality show?
The Black Donnellys follows the story of four young Donnelly brothers -- a clan of Catholic Irish-American siblings who are involved in organized crime in New York's infamous Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. The story is told by unreliable narrator and Donnelly childhood friend named Joey "Ice Cream" while being incarcerated. The series stars Jonathan Tucker, Thomas Guiry, Olivia Wilde, Billy Lush, Michael Stahl-David, Kirk Acevedo and Keith Nobbs.
The series debuted on NBC on February 26, 2007 and took the place of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip on Monday nights. The series' initial half hour did well (10 million) but viewership fell off significantly in the second half hour (6 million). The series' initial hour ranked #50 for the week. The subsequent episodes lost viewers and attracted as few as 5.5 million.
