Kareena Kapoor Khan Once Attacked Karan Johar & Yash Chopra For Not Paying Her Well
Kareena Kapoor Khan is an actress who has been vocal about the huge pay disparity in Bollywood. Many times, she has reasoned that actresses are much underpaid. At times, she has even joked about the same in front of her male counterparts. For instance, while promoting Good Newwz with Akshay Kumar, she made sure to discuss the huge pay gap in a light manner, taking digs at the actor.
However, it is not now that she has started fighting for the cause. In fact, the actress has been clear on her stance for a very long and has not spared filmmakers like Karan Johar and Yash Chopra when it came to her paychecks!

Bhakshak (Netflix)
Starring Bhumi Pednekar, Sanjay Mishra, Aditya Srivastava, Sai Tamhankar
Directed by Pulkit
From its prologue where a young girl is brutalized and then left to die, to its closing monologue where investigative journalist Vaishali Singh looks straight into the camera and asks us if we have lost all compassion… Bhakshak resonates with the corruption and brutality of our times.
Bhakshak is set in a hell-house camouflaged as a shelter home in Munnawarnagar, a thinly veiled reference to the shocking gruesome crime in Muzaffarpur that had shaken the nation’s collective conscience in 2018. But what did we do? Did we go beyond out tsk-tsks in our living rooms?
Pulkit’s film does much more than make polite noises. It is a film of smothered shrieks and chilling recriminations. It is partly a true-crime thriller that Costa-Gavras would approve of, and partly a severe docu-dramatized condemnation of our socio-political reality...

The idea took seed with his debut film ‘Titli’. The fact that he himself experienced certain sexual repression while growing up and witnessed the same among many people around him, made critically acclaimed filmmaker Kanu Behl whose latest ‘Agra’ was screened at the Director’s Fortnight section at Cannes take up the subject in the film.
“I asked myself what is the larger context and how does this very personal impulse become universal? It was then that the idea of physical spaces struck me and I found that to be a very interesting take on life — not just on the personal, but a larger socio-cultural context. The more I delved into the protagonist’s emotional landscape, I realised that his sexuality was related to the physical spaces that he inhabited and the latter was getting ‘affected’ by that as well. Parallel cinema cuts loose from the musicality of Bollywood and the common perception of Indian cinema at large. Coming out of West Bengal in the 1950s, parallel cinema appeared as an alternative to the glamour and dance; socially conscious and experimental in style and mood, it maps the origins of art cinema in India, and for the first time, the rest of the world was looking at India as an innovator of film language (Satyajit Ray’s 1955 train sequence Pather Panchali is one of the most celebrated in film history). In this movement, which followed in the wake of Italian neorealism, life's diegetics became the soundtrack, real life movement over set up musical numbers. This mix traces some choice moments in Parallel Cinema’s sound. Many songs and soundtracks from this period have a lofi quality to them—due in part to the quality of audio recording equipment throughout the years of the movement,...

Veteran composer Vanraj Bhatia, who provided the soundtrack to India’s new age cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s, has died in Mumbai. He was 93 and is understood to have been in poor health for some time.
Born in Bombay, as the metropolis was known as then, in 1927, Bhatia studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and at the Conservatoire de Paris in the 1950s.
Upon his return to India, Bhatia enjoyed a successful career as a composer for advertising commercials through the 1960s. During this time, he also composed scores for several documentaries.
Bhatia debuted as a composer for feature films with “Ankur” (1974) directed by Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of India’s New Wave cinema movement, an independent alternative to mainstream commercial cinema. Editors note: Aravind Adiga won the Man Booker Prize in 2008 for his debut novel The White Tiger, which his old Columbia University classmate Ramin Bahrani turned into the movie that has been generating awards buzz since its Netflix release in January. Adiga penned a guest column for Deadline about how the pair became fast friends by bonding over Scorsese films in Bahrani’s dorm room, a kinship that has lasted ever since.
Back in 1993, the idea that any living writer could come near the Russian novelist Dostoevsky in greatness would have struck me and my undergraduate friends at Columbia University as blasphemy. But this was precisely the claim that a fellow student was making one night as we were studying at the library. Even more shockingly, he was claiming that a living American filmmaker named Scorsese was as good as Dostoevsky. He had a video back in his dorm room that would prove it.

Shyam Benegal's Bhumika (1977) is now showing in the series A Journey into Indian Cinema. When Shyam Benegal was making Bhumika, the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act was in effect in India, which made it practically impossible to import film stock from Kodak. Films in production were rationed color film stock and if Benegal was to continue making Bhumika, he would have to use whatever old stock that was available: the East German Orwo, which the director called a “dreadful stock,” that was sold at a rupee; and some tinted black-and-white stock. He promptly changed the whole structure of his film and decided to narrate the life of actor Hansa Wadkar (whose career spanned three decades: from 1936 to 1968) and mark the passage of time with film stocks: black-and-white for the 1930s, Orwo for the 1950s, and Kodak color for the sixties. His cinematographer, Govind Nihalani, was not pleased. Wadkar’s autobiography,...

Netflix’s prized find of this year opens with a girl cycling down a deserted road in the dead of the night. She is being followed by ….for the want of stronger word…an eve-teaser who cycles lasciviously behind and beside her, pelting with his perverse chant.
I won’t reveal how this terrifying sequence on Delhi’s horror roadway concludes. Suffice it to say, this unheard-of masterpiece with a cast of completely new actors, brings an experience from the lives of the women in Delhi’s police force without exaggerating, dramatizing or sentimentalizing their thankless work.
Dammit, this gem of a film (where the sparkle is never a showroom sales pitch) doesn’t even get judgmental about those high-handed elements on the roads of Delhi who think they own it. They have their own code of conduct to follow.

Om Puri, the veteran of Indian cinema who died on Friday morning at age 66 of an unexpected heart attack, received two National Film Awards, the highest honor an actor can receive in India. The awards are not without their controversies, as one may suspect from awards that are doled out by the national government of India. They have sometimes been accused of favoring Hindi-language films at the expense of regional cinema. As far as Indian awards bodies go, though, the National Film Awards exhibit remarkably prudent taste more often than not. The first of Puri’s National Awards was for Arohan (The Ascending Scale, 1982), by director Shyam Benegal, while the second came for Govind Nihalani’s Ardh Satya (Half Truth, 1983). In the days since Puri’s death, there has been justified focus on his work in Ardh Satya. It gave Puri one of his most definitive roles, and the film...

Missing On A Weekend
Starring Pawan Malhotra, Introducing Karan Hariharan
Written & Directed by Abhishek Jawkar
It takes guts to make a songless (well, almost) thriller with newcomers (well, almost).
Except for the powerful Pawan Malhotra who helms and nails the thriller and astutely anchors the action, Missing On A Weekend is bolstered by a bunch of over-enthusiastic newcomers, eager to please and even more eager to prove they can act.
If only….
Debutant Karan Hariharan is the stand-out debutant. He plays Laksh, a confused confounded 20-something orphaned-at-childhood, financially challenged go-getter who gets trapped in a situation with his rich friends while vacationing in Goa. The friends are all parasitical hedonists sponging on a spoilt rich arrogant friend called Prince who should have been slapped by his parents when he was a child.

If only….

Ajay Devgn, who has been a part of Indian film industry for over two decades, was felicitated on October 19 for his valuable contribution to Indian cinema at the opening day of Confederation of Indian Industry (Cii)’s Big Picture Summit.
The two-time National Award-winning film actor is today among Bollywood’s most bankable box office stars. It isn’t his crowd-pulling prowess alone that defines him. His approach to his star status sets him apart from the crowd.
Primarily, his fans get to see Devgn only on the big screen. As his public appearances are rare, the seasoned actor lets his films do the talking for him. Like a true-blue professional, he has steadily evolved with age even if it might be fair to say that not every huge box-office grosser that he spearheads today does justice to the actor in him.

A lot is being said about the upcoming Saif Ali Khan - Katrina Kaif starrer political action thriller Phantom. In fact ever since the launch of its first look posters a couple of days back, social networks have been buzzing about the film. Now we hear that Kabir Khan's next will also feature late star Dev Anand's niece Sohaila Kapur who is also Shekhar Kapur's sister. Confirming the same, Sohaila stated that she will be seen playing the role of a Pakistani window whose teenage son has been kidnaped by terrorists and is being trained to become one. However despite the limited scope of her character, we also hear that it will most definitely not be a blink and miss role, instead Sohaila's role is a rather integral part of the climax. Interestingly the journalist turned actress Sohaila who was seen in Govind Nihalani's 1991 National Award...

A source close to the actor says he's been shooting with the very beautiful Bryce Dallas Howard.
Says the source from the location, "Bryce is the daughter of the very prolific American director Ron Howard and a rising star in her own right. She plays a stellar role along with Irrfan in Jurassic World. Irrfan and Bryce hit it off from the word go."

Routinely, we love to sweep the truth about Hindu-Muslim relations under the carpet. Or simply sugar-coat it to make the actual volume of mutual distrust and animosity palatable to a nation steeped in escapism and self-delusion.
Dekh Tamasha Dekh(Dtd) directed by theatre legend Feroz Abbas Khan (of Tumhari Amrita fame) is a jolting wake-up call for a nation swept into a slumberous silence by the status quo. Put simply, we don’t want to face the reality about the friction that simmers just under the surface among the two communities. Dtd is perhaps the first Hindi film which ventures into the vista of vitriolic without the fear of offending the more refined sections of the audience who may not be comfortable watching the vanguards and trouble-makers of the two communities addressing each other with the harshest of epithets.

Phoolvati, a young widow, 35, immolates herself on the funeral pyre with her dead husband, 72. Instantly, she is elevated to the Goddess- like status of a Sati, the epitome of virtue for being a selfless devoted wife. A grand temple is planned by the town to worship her. Phoolvati is survived by young Vidya, her only child, who idolised her for upholding the traditional values of society. Mother’s death shatters daughter’s world, Vidya herself having been widowed recently.
Soon Vidya’s relatives, particularly the male members, encircle the vulnerable young widow like vultures. Vidya stands up to them and they don’t find her resistance amusing. The confrontation escalates and...

With the highly-acclaimed Madras Cafe opening to very encouraging responses, the scenario is perfect for another political thriller coming Friday.
And no, Satyagraha is not a sequel to Prakash Jha's Raajneeti. "I was only trying to say that the politics of the two films has a kind of continuity. Where the politics of Raajneeti ends the politics of Satyagraha takes over. Otherwise there is no similarity between the two films. The characters are very different from one another," says Prakash Jha.
While Ajay Devgn, Manoj Bajpayee and Arjun Rampal have worked in a number of films with Prakash, and the Big B has done the anti-reservation film Aarakshan before, it is a first for Prakash with Kareena Kapoor.

Mumbai, Aug 12: National Award-winning director Govind Nihalani feels the movie and television industries will keep changing because they act as a mirror to society, which constantly changes.
"TV will continue to change. TV and cinema are media, which respond to the times, which they are made in. They are not static," Nihalani told Ians in an interview.
Although he hasn't indulged in TV soaps, the filmmaker was instrumental in bringing controversial mini-series "Tamas", about the migration of Sikh and Hindu families to India during partition, on the small screen.
It was beamed on Doordarshan and now it will once.

Mumbai, Aug 11: Acclaimed filmmaker Govind Nihalani, who is planning a sequel to "Ardh Satya", says he would like to team up with Om Puri for the second part.
Om Puri played the protagonist in the 1983 release, which also had Amrish Puri and Smita Patil -- but both the actors are not alive.
"...the two major people are not there anymore with us. Right now, I am keeping my options open and I am waiting to see what happens. I would love to have Om Puri again," he told Ians.

Vishwaroop
Starring Kamal Haasan, Pooja Kumar, Rahul Bose
Directed by Kamal Haasan
Rating: ****
First things first. Kamal Haasan’s enormously controversial film doesn’t hurt Muslim sentiments. In fact it doesn’t hurt the sentiments of any section of the people except those party-poopers who think having a ball at the movies went out of style with Sholay and Chachi 420.
Leave aside its sobering take on global warfare, Vishwaroop is one helluva entertainer. If you’ve forgotten what edge-of-the-seat entertainment mean, then it’s time to rediscover that pleasure. Stylish and substantial the narrative weaves and winds its way into coherent and compulsive threads that bring together the theme of international espionage with the more sensitive issue of the Islamic and the personal identity of a man whose heroic stature grows out of a sense of commitment to the country and to world peace .

If Chulbul Pandey in Dabangg were to be merged wuth Anant Velankar in Govind Nihalani’s Ardh Satya we would probably get Abhijeet Patil in Mumbai Mirror.
Patil, played by entrepreneur-actor Sachiin Joshi, is the product of Mumbai’s underbelly. He is a cop. But he could well be on the other side of the law without skipping a beat.
Like Om Puri in Ardh Satya Joshi’s character in its childhood watched his sadistic father beat up his mother. Joshi grows up churlish and somewhat amoral, hating the world for what it allowed his father to do to his mother. He can’t bear to see a woman being hit. Neither can we. But we still have to.
There are seeds of a gripping cops thriller in Mumbai Mirror. Brutal and brisk, the pace is fairly frenetic.

It was the year before Mrs India Gandhi was assassinated. The nation was not in the best of moods. There were raised voices and frayed tempers prevalent across the nation as corruption and intolerance reached an all-time high. Given the milieu Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron(Jbdy) chose to laugh away the bruise…There is a sharp zaniness about Jbdy which serves as a scathing antidote to the growing sense of collective dismay that the nation faced as extremism and inflation hit the nation hurling it towards damnation.
Many regard Jbdy as the funniest Hindi film ever made. I am not too sure. I sense of deep somberness behind the giggles and guffaws. The plot about two out-of-work photographers named, hold your legal notices, Vinod Chopra(Naseruddin Shah) and Sudhir Mishra(Ravi Baswani) has episodes of...

Becket beckons Bollywood once again. The immortal French play by Jean Anouilh was furnished a sensitive renewability by Hrishikesh Mukherjee in Namak Haraam 38 years ago and then again much later by Govind Nihalani in Dev.
Now the stories of two friends separated by caste creed and ideology who are torn apart by their irreconcilable socio-political differences, is given a seriously spunky spin by Prakash Jha.
Staightaway, let’s get to the point(much in the same vein that the film does). This is Prakash Jha’s most resolutely etched and firmly grounded drama since Mrityudand, and a work way superior to his last two film Raajneeti and Aarakshan both of which suffered to some extent by being scattered in intent and pulled in too many directions.
While here again in Chakravyuh we witness...

Pran Kishan Sikand
Pran Kishan Sikand dreamt of becoming a professional photographer. Little did he know that a measly, humble ‘paan’ (betel leaf) would change his life and set him on his destined path. It was 1939 or thereabouts. Pran was at a ‘paan’ shop at Lahore, enjoying a munch with his friends when a stranger approached him and asked whether he wanted to act in films. Pran was amused and asked his name. Stranger introduced himself as Muhammad Walli, a renowned film maker in the flourishing film district of Lahore. He said he was making a Punjabi film and Pran looked a perfect fit for the role of a villain in the film. Pran just brushed him off. Walli kept insisting that he pay a visit to the studio, and pushed a piece of paper with his address into Pran’s hands. The film was Yamla Jat (1940), a runaway hit that year.
