War Witch, a Canadian-made film about a young girl who escapes from the African rebels who forced her to be a child soldier, was named Best Narrative Feature at the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival. “This indelible character study of a girl who becomes a woman before our eyes in the midst of harrowing war gives words to the unspeakable,” said the jury, which included Patricia Clarkson, Dakota Fanning, Mike Newell, EW’s Lisa Schwarzbaum, Jim Sheridan, and Irwin Winkler. “Riveting, heartbreaking, vivid, and eloquent, the movie balances scenes of crazy enemy hatred with moments of luminous private love.”

Other big winners include Nisha Pahuja's "The World Before Her" for Best Documentary Feature, Bryan Buckley's "Asad" for Best Narrative Short and Frederic Golding's "On the Mat" for Best Feature Film in the festival's online competition.

Tff 2011 foodie doc A Matter of Taste has its broadcast premiere this Monday night (6/13) at 9:00 pm (Et), as part of HBO's Documentary Films Summer Series. The series kicked off last week with the latest film from Liz Garbus, Bobby Fischer Against the World, and a new film will premiere every Monday night through August 15. A Matter of Taste follows the career of chef Paul Liebrandt over the course of a decade, beginning in 2000, when the then 24-year-old chef became the youngest to ever earn a 3-star review in The New York Times. But soon after, when the attacks of 9/11 struck the city, New Yorkers suddenly craved comfort food during their recovery period. As this young haute cuisine darling struggled to adapt to the new world order, he was eventually given the opportunity of a lifetime: opening a new restaurant with legendary restauranteur Drew Nieporent (Nobu, ...

This week the world's greatest winemakers will gather in New York for an annual bacchanal of tasting and feasting. Sophie Menin speaks to Daniel Johnnes who organizes the event.
Daniel Johnnes' office looks out onto the intersection of West Broadway and Canal Street at the mouth of the Holland Tunnel. Yet for Johnnes, the view is far less important than the gallery of photos on the wall to the right of his desk, where black-and-white headshots of Burgundy's greatest winemakers peer over his shoulder like patron saints: Christophe Roumier of Domaine Georges Roumier in Chambolle-Musigny; Jean-Marie Fourrier of Domaine Fourrier in Gevry Chambertin; Dominique Lafon of Domaine Comtes Lafon in Meursault; and Frédéric Mugnier of Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier also in Chambolle-Musigny, to name a few. All have the pensive eyes and deeply etched skin of men who spend their life in the vineyard and the cellar.

There never seem to be enough hours in a day to get everything done, right? Now imagine trying to create and open a successful restaurant in just 24 short hours.
That's the premise behind Food Network's newest reality show, '24 Hour Restaurant Battle' (premieres Sun., July 18, 10Pm Et) , in which two competing teams come up with a concept, decor scheme and menu all in one day to open their doors to actual diners. A panel of restaurant experts will judge their work and award the winning team seed money to start their dream business.
The show is hosted by New York chef/restaurateur Scott Conant, and among the guest judges are chefs Marcus Samuelsson and Geoffrey Zakarian and restaurateur Drew Nieporent.

HollywoodNews.com: Ron Galella: if you lived in New York in the 1970s, he was a villain with a camera. Stalking Jackie Onassis like she was a rare rhinoceros, Galella was the first American paparazzi. Now he’s the subject of a new documentary on HBO called “Smash His Camera,” which will also have a theatrical release.
On Tuesday night at MoMA, and then at the Monkey Bar, Galella became a movie star. “Smash His Camera” started at Sundance last January, and has made it all the way to the big time. Expertly directed by Leon Gast, “Smash His Camera” now suggests that if Gallela hadn’t driven everyone crazy taking their pictures, an important historical archive would not have been created.
Still at the screening, Nobu owner Drew Nieporent said, “Wasn’t he a bad guy when we were growing up?”

Julie & Julia (2009) whipped up a frothy $120 million tally at the box office during its surprisingly successful box office run, and now it's arrived on DVD via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. For anyone who missed the film in theaters, the DVD is a treat -- for several reasons. First, there's the film itself. It's vastly entertaining, if imperfect; so good, you wish it were just a touch tastier. Meryl Streep disappears -- that's what she does -- into the role of Julia Child, the late, great chef and co-author of that cookbook evergreen, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Her story, how and why this unusually tall, rather plain-looking woman became a culinary legend, and how she managed to get her book published, is intercut with a contemporary and also-true bit of business about struggling writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams), who blogs to the world about her efforts to serve up every recipe in Child's book,...

Oscar-winner Robert De Niro may be looking to cash out his stake in celebrity sushi chain Nobu according to press reports in the US. The actor teamed up with famed sushi chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa to open sixteen locations of the posh eatery in cities such as South Beach, Florida, Malibu, California, Tokyo, Japan and Las Vegas, Nevada. Owners of the celebrity hot spot have been meeting with executives from chain companies such as Starwood Hotels and PF Chang's to help finance even further expansion. A source tells New York magazine part of the thinking between the partners is, "They've had a great run, and it wouldn't be such a bad idea to cash out." The company is estimated to be worth $250 million and De Niro is said to own approximately 30 per cent. Drew Nieporent, one of Nobu's original partners, claims he is unaware of any definite plans to sell saying, "I'm sure there have been discussions about some stuff, but there's a lot of generic stuff out there. It's possible."...
