‘Sing Sing’, ‘Dandelion’, ‘Touch’ New In Theaters; Martin Scorsese Narrates Powell & Pressburger Doc, ‘Sorry/Not Sorry’ Takes On Louis C.K. – Specialty Preview
Image
Sing Sing, the powerful, poignant prison drama starring Colman Domingo, opens NY/LA, with indie love stories Dandelion and Touch debuting on hundreds of screens as distributors continue to tinker with release patterns. Martin Scorsese, eloquent as always, narrates (and executive produced) Made In England: The Films of Powell And Pressburger. Sorry/Not Sorry takes on comedian Louis C.K.

It’s a mixed specialty market still below pre-Covid levels but buoyed recently by hits like Thelma and hopeful that cinema goers are starting to sort out what to see, when and where.

“I think you’re starting to see who’s really theatrical and who isn’t. The lines are becoming clearer. Like, ‘Okay, I’m going to see this, Inside Out 2, in a theater, and I’m going to see that at the Angelika, or wherever, it might be. But I’m going to see it in a theater,...

Dandelion Review: KiKi Layne's Rich Performance Is Saddled With A Romance I Don't Buy
Image
Dandelion beautifully captures a musician's creative journey, with KiKi Layne's performance as a standout element. The romantic storyline between Dandelion and Casey may distract from the film's grounded tone and musical focus. While the film skillfully intertwines artistry and romance, some viewers may struggle to fully engage with the unrealistic aspects of the relationship.

Dandelion is two films I wish I could disentangle. One is an exploration of creativity and the creative act, through the lens of one musician's struggle to keep her vocation a career (and vice versa). The other is a romantic drama about two people who find in each other the spark they were missing, and let it become their world for as long as they can hold back reality.

‘Dandelion’ Review: KiKi Layne Strikes Resounding Chords in a Well-Observed Drama That’s Strongest When It Sings
Image
In the multitude of A Star Is Born movies and their progeny, an aspiring artist’s struggles are prelude to a melodrama of triumph and conflict, played out in the unforgiving glare of the fame machine’s klieg lights. Nicole Riegel’s Dandelion turns that template inside out: In its fringe milieu of shadows, the yearning and bursts of inspiration, the discouragement and relentless hard work are not prelude but the main action.

The story of a young singer-songwriter who’s stuck in a nowhere loop until she takes an impulsive leap, the feature is sometimes clunky but often quietly transporting, with strong chemistry between KiKi Layne as the title character and Thomas Doherty as the charismatic musician she meets when she ventures out of Cincinnati and her self-defeating rut.

This is the second part of a planned trilogy centering on Ohio women, and, as in her debut feature, Holler,...

Uninspiring Once cover song Dandelion hides KiKi Layne's formidable voice
Image
DandelionImage: IFC Films

The title of writer-director Nicole Riegel’s Dandelion suggests it’s an allegorical tale about a sprouting seedling carried on a once-in-a-lifetime journey along a soft, gentle breeze. Instead it’s focused on two strangers caught up in complicated circumstances that pit head against heart. One is...

Podtalk, Review: Actor KiKi Layne on Blossoming in ‘Dandelion’
Image
Chicago – Growth from a young and rising actor is defined by KiKi Layne. After getting her big break as Tish in “If Beale Street Could Talk” from 2018, she has build her resume in both independent (“Native Son”) and tentpole (“Coming 2 America”) films, and showcases her music talent as the title character in “Dandelion,” which opens Friday, July 12th.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

Dandelion (KiKi Layne) is a struggling Cincinnati singer-songwriter in a downward spiral, including dead end gigs and a mother who needs caregiving. When she takes a last-ditch-effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota she meets Casey (Thomas Doherty), a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago. As Dandelion joins Casey’s nomadic group of struggling musicians, the kindred spirits make music together and strike up a whirlwind romance.

The film is a passionate meditation on young love and the sensitive artist trying to interpret it. The...

‘Dandelion’ Review: KiKi Layne Takes the Power and Passion of ‘Once’ on Distinctly American Road Trip
Image
Dandelion (KiKi Layne) is not appreciated in her own time. She’s not appreciated at the swanky Cincinnati hotel where she sings and plays guitar three nights a week, trying her damndest to be heard over rude guests who talk during her set, jabber on their phones, or simply pretend she doesn’t exist. She’s not appreciated at home, where her ailing mother Jean (Melanie Nicholls-King) can barely be coaxed off the couch without tossing off a combative word at her daughter. And she’s not appreciated the way the same people she came up with on the local music scene are, so many of them crowding her social media feeds as they sign big deals and frequently flash their bodies for some added clout.

So when Dandelion takes off in the middle of the night, bound for the last place she expects to find anything of value for...

‘Dandelion’ Review: Words Don’t Always Sing in Nicole Riegel’s Sophomore Feature
Image
The centerpiece of Nicole Riegel’s Dandelion is the eponymous character (KiKi Layne) taking a chance on a biker rally music festival in South Dakota. A Black singer-songwriter living in Cincinnati, Dandelion initially scoffs at the idea when the bartender at the hotel where she plays three days a week slides her the flyer for the festival. White people on motorcycles who probably want to hear rock or country isn’t exactly her scene. But she goes, and it goes poorly—until, that is, she meets a charming guitarist named Casey (Thomas Doherty).

The folky compositions that result from Dandelion and Casey collaborating on music are a far cry from the acoustic cover of Gin Blossoms’s “Hey Jealousy” that we first see Dandelion play back home. The downfall of many a music-based film is often the music at its center, but the songs that these lovers play together—courtesy...

‘Black Bird’ Creates Uneasy Truths Through Performance, Pace, and Sound
Image
Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Apple TV+, for this edition, we look at how the editing, cinematography, and sound created the pulsing drama “Black Bird.”

Adapted from the book “In with the Devil” by James Keene and Hillel Levin, the Apple TV+ limited series “Black Bird” shines a disturbing light on murderer, rapist, and suspected serial killer Larry Hall, who preyed on girls and women during the 1980s and ‘90s. Show creator Dennis Lehane (“Gone Baby Gone”) unravels the story, based on actual events, through a gripping, character-driven six episodes that redefine the psychological crime thriller genre.

The narrative examines the male psyche through the eyes of Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) and Jimmy Keene (Taron Egerton), a high school football star turned con serving 10 years without parole...

Pesci will play the grandfather of Davidson’s character, joining Edie Falco, who was previously cast as Pete’s mother. ‘Black Bird’ Review: ‘Where I Lie’ Is a Tragic Retelling of an All-Too Familiar Topic
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Black Bird” Season 1, Episode 5, “Where I Lie.”]

There’s only one more episode of “Black Bird” and, honestly, it’s hard to figure out how this show is going to stick the landing. We’ve seen other networks pare down their series from 10 episodes to eight, but trying to clear up a story in six? Right now it doesn’t feel as if everything will be satisfyingly closed by next week, especially after the brutal gut punch that is this week’s episode, “Where I Lie.”

The world of “Black Bird” has been fairly insular. It’s behind the walls of Springfield prison with Jimmy (Taron Egerton) and Larry (Paul Walter Hauser). Or it’s outside with Detectives Miller (Greg Kinnear) and MacCauley (Sepideh Moafi). Occasionally, we check in on Jimmy’s dad, Big Jim (Ray Liotta). But as we get closer to the end, the lines of reality are...

Molly McGlynn
Review ‘Mary Goes Round’ Directed by Molly McGlynn
Molly McGlynn
Review by Peter BelsitoIn writer-director Molly McGlynn’s feature debut, substance abuser and substance abuse counsellor Mary (Aya Cash) is suspended from her job after a DUI arrest, so she returns to her hometown of Niagara Falls. There she finds her long-estranged father (John Ralston) dying of cancer — and he is hopeful that Mary will finally get to know her half-sister (Sara Waisglass). Mary discovers that the personal problems she’s been studiously ignoring only grow more inescapable in the presence of the estranged family members who more or less caused them.

Mary (Aya Cash) is a 29-year-old Toronto resident with a serious partying habit. When after a latest inebriate and sex night we see her among an addicts’ support group, we assume she’s ready to mend her ways.

Then we realize she’s the meeting’s (not very good) facilitator. Working as a professional substance-abuse counselor gives Mary...

Montclair Review: ‘The Strange Ones’ is Exceptionally-Directed, Maddeningly Plotted
The Strange Ones is a maddening, yet exceptionally-directed debut feature from acclaimed short filmmaking duo Lauren Wolkstein and Christopher Radcliff, adapted from their 2011 short the film of the same name. Opening with a series of images, The Strange Ones never gives away the story, allowing us to wonder with two guys whom seem to be brothers, Nick (Alex Pettyfer), the protective older one, and Jeremiah (James Freedson-Jackson), the younger one. Running from a burning house revealed to us quickly in the film’s evocative opening sequence, they soon find themselves in a motel where desk clerk Kelly (Emily Althaus) offers to let them stay for free off-season. Nick, it would appear, has been providing additional compensation to Kelly, although looks can be incredibly deceiving as Jeremiah berates Kelly for trusting Nick, claiming him to be cruel, violent, and gay in a chilling monologue.

Nick seemingly holds special supernatural powers, telling...

Rookie Blue: Season Five Ratings
There doesn't seem to be much danger of ABC's Rookie Blue being cancelled any time soon. The show is produced in Canada and the fifth season has 22 episodes (instead of the usual 13). However, they're being split into two parts -- half will air this summer while the rest will run at a later date. This kind of move often spells the end for a series. Will there be a sixth season? Stay tuned.

Rookie Blue continues to follow a group of newbie cops as they work at the fictional 15 Division. The cast includes Missy Peregrym, Gregory Smith, Ben Bass, Travis Milne, Enuka Okuma, Charlotte Sullivan, Peter Mooney, Priscilla Faia, Matt Gordon, Rachel Ancheril, Melanie Nicholls-King, Adam MacDonald, Aliyah O’Brien, Oliver Becker, and Matt Murray.

'Rookie Blue' Season 4, Episode 8: Noelle and Frank's wedding plans go 'For Better, For Worse'
Rarely do things run smoothly for the "Rookie Blue" cops -- even their own nuptials.

Noelle (Melanie Nicholls-King) and Frank's (Lyriq Bent) wedding wasn't exactly like clockwork in Thursday's (Aug. 8) episode of the ABC drama, "For Better, For Worse." Even with the ceremony taking place that evening, much remained in flux, prompting Andy (Missy Peregrym) to try to take the organizational lead.

Meanwhile, claiming she was getting "lying hives," Chloe (Priscilla Faia) begged Dov (Gregory Smith) to tell Frank -- her godfather and their boss -- about their off-duty relationship. It wouldn't be an easy day for Chloe in another way; she was partnered with angry-as-usual Gail (Charlotte Sullivan), whom Chloe had informed about the crush that Gail's now-ex-boyfriend Nick (Peter Mooney) had on Andy.

Andy and Nick also were partners for the day, with Andy starting it by crooning along to Extreme's "More Than Words" -- the tune she...

'Rookie Blue' recap: 'Homecoming' for Andy ... and a bank robber
"You're Andy McNally. You don't give up."

You said it, Oliver Shaw (Matt Gordon) ... and his fellow cop McNally (Missy Peregrym) proved it several times over Thursday (May 30) as ABC's "Rookie Blue" aired episode 2 of Season 4, "Homecoming." And the story, respectively written and directed by series veterans Russ Cochrane and David Wellington, reaffirmed that the show continually succeeds by being as much (if not more) about the regular characters as the given week's crime.

On her first day back on the job after the undercover mission that took her and Nick Collins (Peter Mooney) away from 15 Division for several months, Andy wasted no time getting back into literal action. Spared by Oliver's quick intervention from having to ride with Marlo Cruz (Rachael Ancheril) -- the new flame of Andy's ex, Sam Swarek (Ben Bass) -- Andy sensed trouble upon seeing someone flee from a bank.

Of course, she was correct: robbery in progress.

The Emmy winner guest-stars on the season 3 premiere of "Rookie Blue" as Henry McLeod, and as ABC's press release describes him, he's "a belligerent drunk driver with a haunting secret." Punching Dov (Gregory Smith) in the face, while reeking of whisky? Definitely. But there's so much more to his character. More on that in a bit.

I've loved "Rookie Blue" since it debuted two years ago. I have a real fondness for the stars, who I've spoken to on numerous occasions (whether it's on location or in a fancy hotel suite), but there's something about the series that makes me proud. Sure,...

Welcome to the first-ever edition of the Rookie Blue Round Table!

Below, staff writer Christine Orlando is joined by three TV Fanatic readers - Jen, Ashley and Sam - as they dissect, "God's Good Grace," the second season finale. As always, fan feedback is encouraged on the following topics...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Would you prefer to see Gail paired romantically with Chris, Dov, or Luke? Why?
Jen: I'm not really sure she should be with anyone right now. It would be kinda cool to see her with Dov but then there's a downside to Dov and Gail potentially being together, Chris would probably go back to being mad at Dov and Gail.
Ashley: Dov. Although they are always arguing and disagreeing, I really saw more of a connection between Dov and Gail this season. They have that whole butting heads thing going on right now, and sometimes that's how it starts. Earlier in the season,...
