Italy’s Cam Film and Fremantle’s The Apartment have teamed up to acquire rights to bestselling Italian author Carlo Rovelli’s “Helgoland,” an origin story about quantum physics, with plans to turn the book into a high-end TV series.
A bestseller in Italy, “Helgoland” will soon be published in the U.K. and elsewhere around world. It’s the story of quantum physics, the theory that has given rise to modern technology — the computer chip, for one — and atomic energy, but also to philosophical considerations and a new understanding of how just about everything works.
Rovelli’s previous books, “Seven Brief Lessons on Physics,” “Reality Is Not What it Seems” and “The Order of Time” are all international bestsellers, translated into 41 languages. He is a theoretical physicist who has worked in Italy and the U.S.

Mediaset is moving into the international TV arena with a high-end series about Tommaso Buscetta, the first high-ranking member of Cosa Nostra to break the Sicilian Mafia’s oath of silence.
Working-titled “Don Masino” the eight-episode show is being shepherded by prominent producer Pietro Valsecchi through his TaoDue film and TV shingle, which is fully owned by Mediaset.
Valsecchi, who has long been churning out hits on his home turf, has been developing the Buscetta series for six years. He was beaten to the punch by director Marco Bellocchio’s feature film “The Traitor,” the Buscetta biopic that has been a box office draw in Italy after launching from Cannes and is Italy’s Oscar candidate this year.

Tir, the first narrative film by Italian director Alberto Fasulo, has picked up the Golden Marc Aurelio Award for best film at the 8th Rome Film Fesival.
The docu-drama explores the current econmic crisis as seen through the eyes of a former professor who becomes a trucker to solve his money problems. It stars Slovenian actor Branko Zavrsan (No Man’s Land).
Fasulo is best known for documentaries including White Noise (Rumore bianco). Tir is being sold internationally by Fandango Sales.
One of 18 competition titles, Tir beat heavyweight Us titles including Jean-Marc Vallee’s Dallas Buyers Club, Spike Jonze’s Her and Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace.
However, all three of those films did manage to secure wins at the festival on Saturday evening.
