The 15 Best Cartoons Of The 1980s, Ranked
Image
Cartoons from the 1980s hit differently. Maybe it was the fact they were all clever subliminal advertisements to bankrupt parents into buying endless merchandise and unnecessary items like Michaelangelo's Sewer Exploration Belt (though this author still asked for two of them for his birthday). The point is these animated series continue to be spoken about to this day, remaining cherished pop culture artifacts.

But how in the world do you rank the best of the best? That proved tricky, to be honest. The /Film team wrestled with all options, considering which shows had the greatest legacy and influence -- both then and now. Heck, I even suggested a Hell in a Cell match to settle a spot for "BraveStarr," but the idea was vetoed as "too dangerous" or something. Nonetheless, shoutout to "BraveStarr," "My Little Pony," and "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," as these shows deserve honorable mentions here.

Garfield

Garfield is the central character in Jim Davis's comic strip, which officially began in 1978 under the same name. Garfield is an orange tabby cat with a love of lasagna and a disdain for Mondays. He tends to torment his owner and dog while trying to secure more food - and quiet.

These 10 Garfield Comics That Just Turned 40 Introduced a Character I Never Knew Existed
Image
Garfield is one of the most hilarious and iconic franchises of all time, and thats not just because of the titular orange cat himself, but also all the other characters that make the series so great. From Odie and Jon to Liz and Nermal, there is no shortage of wacky characters that stand out among the funniest in the Garfield series - including characters that some may not have ever heard of.

Jim Davis created Garfield in 1978, and the comic strip is still going strong to this day. In other words, Garfield has been around for a very long time, so it makes sense that there would be a number of characters for Garfield to interact with. And, within these 10 Garfield comics that just turned 40, fans are introduced to one character in particular they probably never even knew existed.

Garfield's Cute Nemesis Nermal is a Hilarious Character, But I Miss His Old Design
Image
Garfield's greatest nemesis, Nermal, is undeniably one of the franchise's best characters, but I seriously miss his original design. First debuting on September 3rd, 1979, Nermal hit the ground running 45 years ago as one of the funniest character concepts from the hit Jim Davis newspaper strip. However, just like Garfield, his design has undergone changes over the years, and I can't help but feel like his current design misses what made his original look so funny.

Nermal's first comic features Jon walking up to Garfield, telling him they'll be babysitting his parents' kitten while they're on vacation. He then holds out Nermal, who is unbelievably tiny as he perches on Jon's hand. It's an adorable design that rightfully earned him the moniker of "the world's cutest kitten," but the comics that followed introduced readers to just how funny he could be.

Whether it's insulting Garfield's weight or praising himself for being cuter than him,...

10 Garfield Comics That Showed His Softer Side (Against His Will)
Image
Garfield might be a master of sarcasm and pranks, but beneath that lazy, lasagna-loving exterior, he's got a surprising range of emotions. His bonds with Pooky, Nermal, and Liz reveal his softer side, and highlights how even the laziest, most sarcastic cats have a surprising capacity for affectionjust on their own terms. Despite his mean demeanor, Garfield truly cares for Jon and Odie, which he oftentimes shows even when he's not meaning to.

Garfield is a famous prankster, a notorious food-motivated maniac, and a generally cynical cat. Garfield loves lasagna, he hates Mondays, and he finds no greater enjoyment in life than when hes messing with Jon or bullying Odie. Indeed, when its not coming from food, Garfields happiness comes from the embarrassment, suffering, or overall misfortune of others. However, that shouldnt suggest that Garfield doesnt have a softer side.

Sure, Garfield is a mischievous scamp, one who will pull...

15 Funniest Garfield Comics That Just Turned 30 (That Will Make You Actually Pity Jon)
Image
Garfield relentlessly pranks Jon, causing chaos by tearing up his mail and ruining his gardening. Jon's attempts to prank Garfield backfire hilariously, highlighting Garfield's cunning and Jon's misfortune. Even Garfield's "kind" gestures, like hand-delivering a "milkshake," are wrapped in pranks, making Jon a constant target.

Theres a reason Garfield is one of the most recognizable cartoon characters in history, and it isnt exactly because hes nice. The fat orange cat doesnt just despise Mondays and love lasagna, hes also the very definition of a mischievous scamp. Any chance he gets, Garfield will pull a prank on those closest to him, including his fellow pets, Odie and Nermal. However, theres one person Garfield loves to pick on more than any other: Jon.

Over the years, Garfield has made Jons life incredibly difficult with all the ridiculous pranks he pulls on him. From switching the labels of his cat food with Jons tuna,...

10 Funniest Garfield Comics That Just Turned 40 (Including 1 of Jon's Grossest Mistakes)
Image
Garfield's original comic strip form is the true essence of the character, showcasing a wide range of comedic styles and unique moments - and a month's worth of them just turned 40. The iconic cat shows moments of tenderness with his stuffed bear friend Pooky and experiences shocking realizations about his imaginary nature. Garfield's mischievous antics, including pranks on Jon and switching tuna for cat food, highlight his sarcastic and lazy yet lovable personality.

Garfield is easily one of the most recognizable and beloved characters of all time, with many fans introduced to Garfield through his television series, his feature films, and even a few live-action adaptations. Not to mention, Garfield has essentially become the official mascot of lasagna. However, as much as Garfield has become a cultural icon, theres still nothing that can compare to his original form: the comic strip.

Created by Jim Davis in 1977, Garfield follows the misadventures of a fat,...

10 Funniest Garfield Comics Where Garfield Loses
Image
Garfield often loses in comedic situations, such as getting scolded by Jon, losing his mind at the thought of a diet, or being utterly defeated by a Monday. Key moments include Garfield losing after messing with Jon, bullying Nermal, or trying to avoid getting a bath. Garfield is usually the one dolling out playful misery for his own enjoyment, yet in these strips, he's the one who 'loses'.

One would be hard-pressed to find a more iconic comic strip character than Garfield (with Peanuts Charlie Brown being his only real competitor), and thats because Garfield is not only a hilarious comic, but its been around for so long. Jim Davis created Garfield in 1978, and still writes the comic strip to this day. Thats nearly five decades of Garfield stories that fans have enjoyed for as many years, which have featured Garfield in comedic situations of all sorts.

Every Garfield Movie, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
The Garfield Movie (2024) has a star-studded cast and aims to establish a new franchise with an origin story and fun new characters. Previous Garfield adaptations like A Tale of Two Kitties missed the mark with forced adventures and lackluster humor. Garfield Gets Real stands out with self-referential humor, but The Garfield Movie triumphs with a return to the character's comic roots.

The Garfield Movie has once again brought the beloved characters from Jim Davis' comic strips to the screen, but how does it compare to other adaptations? Garfield's sarcastic comments and hate for Mondays have been relatable for decades, and in the age of childhood nostalgia, it's no surprise that more movies have begun to pop up. Of course, some of these have done better at capturing the charm of Davis' comics, while others have missed the mark entirely. All these Garfield screen adaptations may contain our favorite orange tabby,...

Another Blue Dog Challenged Gender Stereotypes 22 Years Before Bluey Premiered
Image
Bluey challenges gender stereotypes about colors by just being her authentic self, breaking the notion that certain colors are associated with certain genders. Bluey is not the first children's show to address gendered associations of color, as Blue from Blue's Clues faced misgendering assumptions due to being fully blue. Children's shows like Bluey and Blue's Clues are important in breaking persisting gender conventions and pushing audiences past their own perceptions.

The Australian children's television show Bluey commendably challenges gender stereotypes head-on, but another blue dog was already on the case well before it premiered. Bluey has distinguished itself for tackling big, real-world issues in between completely engrossing its young audience members with the day-to-day lives of the Heeler household. Among the Heeler family is the title character and main protagonist Bluey, the oldest sister of the pack, whose endlessly curious and energetic personality is accompanied by her innate provocation of gender stereotypes.

Garfield's Best Joke Proves It's Smarter Than People Pretend
Image
One of the best Garfield jokes in the comic strip's long history proved that the series is smarter than people pretend it is. Garfield is a series that has stood the test of time since it debuted in 1978. The titular orange fat cat with a passion for lasagna has delighted newspaper readers for decades with his zany antics. He's been around so long in fact that he's become a national icon that anyone can recognize, even if they've never read a single comic strip. He's even found himself making the venture to the big screen twice in the 2000s and will soon make a return to cinemas with Chris Pratt in the lead role. However, it's this lengthy time in the public eye that has drawn some criticism over the years.

For some fans of newspaper comics, Garfield is not the funniest example of the medium. One of the most...

Garfield: Everything We Know So Far About Chris Pratt's Take On The Cartoon Cat
Image
Once upon a time, there existed these things called newspapers that showed up at your door in the morning. Inside were news stories about politics, sports, health, and movie listings. They also included comic strips, aka the funny pages. Though the newspaper has gone the way of the dodo, for the most part, some of these comic strip characters still live in our imagination. One of them is a big orange tabby cat named Garfield, who hates mornings and Mondays, loves lasagna, is terrified of spiders, and bullies his doggie housemate Odie.

Even if you've never read a single Garfield comic in a newspaper, you've likely seen him in books, animated series, or films. This grumpy orange feline, created in 1978 by cartoonist Jim Davis, is hitting the big screen again in a new animated film adaptation from Alcon Entertainment. Garfield will be voiced this time around by Chris Pratt ("Guardians of the Galaxy...

Garfield movie casts Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, and Cecily Strong
Image
Mondays beware because Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, and Cecily Strong are joining the cast of Alcon Entertainment‘s Garfield movie. Chris Pratt and Samuel L. Jackson also star in the film, which Mark Dindal is directing.

It should come as no surprise that Alcon’s Garfield movie is based on Jim Davis’ celebrated comic strip focusing on an orange, lazy, lasagna-loving feline, his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and Jon’s pet dog Odie. When Garfield isn’t making life a living hell for Jon and his canine companion, he waxes rhapsodic about the world, his perpetual hunger, and hatred of Mondays. Plot details about Alcon’s Garfield movie are unknown at this time. However, we know Pratt is voicing the iconic cat while Jackson is playing Garfield’s father, Vic.

Reports do not indicate who Waddingham, Rhames, Hoult, and Strong will play. However, if I had to venture a guess,...

Everything We Know About the Upcoming ‘Garfield’ Animated Movie
Image
After more than 15 years, America’s most iconic cat is finally returning to the big screen.

In 2024, we’re looking forward to the release of “Garfield,” the long-awaited film starring Jim Davis’ iconic comic strip character. The movie will, incredibly, be the first fully-animated theatrical project starring the lasagna-eating grouch, who first appeared in newspaper comic sections in 1978. Although the franchise has remained enormously popular in the decades since its launch, Garfield’s only theatrical films were two live action/CGI projects starring Bill Murray as the character. After the second film, “A Tale of Two Kitties,” bowed in 2006, the franchise remained off the bigscreen for years, in favor of direct-to-dvd films and television shows.

News of Garfield’s animated return first broke in 2016, when Alcon Entertainment secured the exclusive rights to developing animated features based on the character. Although the project remained dormant for several years, 2021 saw an uptick in news about the film,...
