How Drake’s SXSW Strip Club Docuseries ‘Magic City’ Walked a ‘Fine Line’ With Nudity: ‘The Art Is Being Celebrated’
Image
New Drake-produced doscuseries “Magic City: An American Fantasy” debuted at SXSW Monday night to a roaring crowd packed with friends, patrons and fans of the project’s titular iconic Atlanta strip club, Magic City.

After the first episode of the three-part doc, which does not yet have a distributor or platform attached, was screened, producer Cole Brown and director Charles Todd fielded a few questions from the audience, including “Was there anything too explicit to put in the documentary?”

“We wanted to walk a fine line with nudity, in particular — where you can’t make a documentary about a strip club and not have any nudity, it just isn’t true to form — and you’re trying to tell the true story,” Brown said. “At the same time, we didn’t want it to be salacious, gratuitous. We wanted to use it in such a way that you’re...

‘Past Lives’, Celine Song triumph at 2024 Spirit Awards

The rain stayed away from Santa Monica Beach on Sunday (February 25) as Past Lives was named best film and Celine Song best director at the 39th annual Spirit Awards.

While the legacy studio and streamer contenders have dominated much of the big-ticket awards shows this season like Saturday night’s SAG Awards, last weekend’s Baftas, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, this was a good opportunity for the Oscar-nominated A24 romance and Song to earn gongs for a film which has done well among critics groups since its world premiere at Sundance just over one year ago.

‘Dear Mama’ Sets Premiere Record for FX Unscripted Series
Dear Mama (2022)
FX’s docuseries Dear Mama set a new ratings high for an unscripted series debut on the Disney-owned outlet.

The chronicle of the lives of Tupac and Afeni Shakur, which premiered April 21, passed Welcome to Wrexham as FX’s most watched unscripted debut in cross-platform viewers. The full cross-platform figures aren’t being released, per FX policy, but the majority of Dear Mama’s audience likely streamed the show on Hulu.

The two-episode premiere of Dear Mama, directed by Allen Hughes, averaged about 185,000 viewers for its on-air debut (episode one drew 196,000). That trailed Welcome to Wrexham’s linear premiere in August 2022 (it averaged 271,000 viewers for its first two episodes), but Dear Mama made up the difference with streaming and other delayed viewing. Streaming often makes up the majority of viewing for series that originate on ad-supported and premium cable outlets.

Moral Clauses: Why a Red Scare Tactic Revived in the #MeToo Era Could Lead to a Fight With the Guilds
Image
Click here to read the full article.

In the wake of #MeToo, employers across Hollywood turned to morals clauses as an attempt to deter bad behavior. While these provisions have been criticized by talent reps for being too broad and too subjective, there’s actually a bigger problem with their presence in many contracts: They’re prohibited by the directors and writers guilds’ collective bargaining agreements — and they have been for decades.

“The origin was the Red Scare,” says talent lawyer Linda Lichter, explaining that the clauses first became popular when McCarthyism hit Hollywood. “Companies put them in contracts so they could fire people if they were accused of being a Red. They’ve come back in the context of #MeToo.”

The clauses — which use language such as “public disrepute, humiliation, contempt, scandal or ridicule” — essentially mean anything that makes a company look bad could be grounds for immediate termination.

Before there was ‘Mare of Easttown’: Groundbreaking female cops on TV
Image
Kate Winslet’s tough but tender small-town police detective Mare Sheehan of HBO’s acclaimed crime thriller “Mare of Easttown” is the latest in a long line of female TV detectives including S. Epatha Merkerson (“Law & Order”); Helen Mirren (“Prime Suspect”); Kyra Sedgwick (“The Closer); Mariska Hargitay (“Law & Order: Svu”) and Regina King (“Watchmen”).

Unfortunately, it took an inordinate amount of time for actresses to get a fair shake in police procedurals. Early TV crime dramas were inundated with the likes of taciturn toughies Lee Marvin (“M Squad”), Robert Taylor (“The Detectives”), Jack Webb (“Dragnet”) and Broderick Crawford (“Highway Patrol”). Way too much testosterone.

But slowly the dynamics began to change especially with the rise of the Women’s Movement. Here’s a look at five trailblazing female cop shows who paved the way.

Beverly Garland (“Decoy”)

After macho actor after macho actor as police detectives and cops,...

Ashton Sanders To Adapt Peter Nelson’s WWI Novel ‘A More Unbending Battle’
Image
Exclusive: Moonlight and Native Son star Ashton Sanders has secured the film and television rights to Peter Nelson’s non-fiction novel, A More Unbending Battle: The Harlem Hellfighter’s Struggle for Freedom in WWI and Equality at Home.

Sanders will produce the adaptation under his 1237 Production banner. Published in 2009, A More Unbending Battle details the little-known story of the 369th Infantry Regiment, the first African-American regiment mustered to fight in World War I in the face of discrimination both at home and abroad, defending a nation that refused them basic human rights.

Despite extraordinary odds, this rag-tag group, known as the Harlem Hellfighters, became one of the most successful regiments of the war, spending longer than any other American regiment in combat and becoming the first Allied unit to reach the Rhine. The regiment never lost a foot of ground nor a prisoner in 191 days of combat. 170 soldiers in the...

HBO ‘Hard Knocks’ To Feature Both Rams & Chargers In L.A-Centric Season
Image
HBO’s annual NFL-sanctioned look inside the process of teams preparing for the season will this year follow both the Rams and Chargers in one of the most unusual summer training camps ever held.

Hard Knocks: Los Angeles will premiere August 11 at a moment of uncertainty about how Covid-19 will shape pro football, a contact sport where an NBA-style “bubble” of isolation is not possible.

Ratings-wise, the popularity of football has carried over to the NFL Films-produced Hard Knocks, whose last four seasons have averaged four million weekly viewers. The series, which premiered in 2001, has never previously focused on two teams at once.

The coronavirus pandemic is apt to be a major storyline, regardless of how much it is reflected in the show’s five episodes. The NFL has proceeded largely with business as usual, conducting its annual draft online in April and announcing that training camps would proceed this summer,...

The Pollinators - Jennie Kermode - 16048
Did you know that of all the flowering crops that humans eat, 80% are pollinated by bees? From apples, mangoes, Brazil nuts and cashews to buckwheat, turnips and marrows, many vital food sources depend on them - but if you've been paying attention, you'll know that bee populations are in decline. Part of the blame for this has been laid at the feet of travelling beekeepers who transport their hives to and fro across the Us each year to provide support to farmers where there are not enough bees locally. Nonsense, they say in this documentary. They've been doing this since the Fifties. They care about their bees, and they know that something else is wrong.

If you doubt that assertion on first reading it, Peter Nelson's film lets you see it on their faces. There are no big gestures here, just tired men unused to displaying emotion in public whose.

Learn About the Importance of Bees in 'The Pollinators' Docu Trailer
"We can learn a good deal from bees about the health of the landscapes that we inhabit." 1091 Media has released the official trailer for an indie documentary called The Pollinators, which premiered at the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival last year and played at numerous other festivals all year. The Pollinators is a disturbing and eye-opening environmental doc about how mass farming and consumer food preferences are destroying these vital flying insects. For a year and a half, filmmaker and beekeeper himself, Peter Nelson, traveled to 14 states over the seasons of pollination, filming for more than 85 days to tell this extraordinary story of honey bees, migratory beekeepers and their importance to our food and agriculture system. Most people don't know that bees are directly responsible for 33% of all food consumed. Did you know that? This doc goes hand-in-hand with the short film Hive Mindfully, and with the other doc Honeyland.

Lou Ferrigno in The Incredible Hulk (1996)
Review: V the Final Battle
Lou Ferrigno in The Incredible Hulk (1996)
Once upon a time, when there were just three major networks, the schedules would be filled with glossy, interesting, high-concept miniseries, usually aired during the vital November, February, and May sweeps periods when the ratings were used to set advertising rates. This is what gave us great concepts like ABC’s Roots or, in 1983, V.

Metro subways and bus stations were plastered that spring with red-suited people, wearing sunglasses and big smiles, wrapping their arms around ordinary folk and we were assured: “The Visitors are our Friends”. A few weeks later, they were replaced with replicas but now a spray-painted V covered them and we got a hint of the Visitors’ true, reptilian nature.

The V miniseries, wonderfully written and directed by Ken Johnson (he of Incredible Hulk fame) was a taut two-night affair that presented the aliens coming to Earth and befriending us before their true intentions were revealed and a resistance movement began.
