By numbers, her work in the Hindi film industry seems quite scanty — at 33 films in around a decade and a half. But the statistics fail to reveal that, save around five, all were box-office hits, and some of them broke new ground, making her one of the most popular and successful actresses of all times — and a fashion icon too.
Though she struck gold right from her debut as female lead, and went on to become an “in demand” actress for everything, from frothy romances to tear-jerkers, Sadhana is most remembered for her trademark hairstyle — the famous “Sadhana cut” of fringes or short bangs (itself inspired by the elfin and charming Audrey Hepburn) — and pioneering form-fitting kurtas and churidar pyjamas.
But in her comparatively limited outings, Sadhana, who was born on this day in 1941, showcased her acting prowess. She could essay roles of a rich heiress to a village belle...

A film on surrogate motherhood for Mother's Day. Sounds just like what the doctor ordered. And?Badnaam Gali, now streaming on ZEE5, does mean well. It displays an exacerbated empathy for the unwed mother, played with endearing artlessness by Patralekhaa, who is a target of vicious gossiping in her Delhi locality.
She is of course not what she seems. Never! And it takes a rough rural Punjabi bloke to set her reputation right and earn himself the honour of being the first social reformist of the live streaming platform, a la Guru Dutt (Pyaasa) and Sunil Dutt ("Sujata?and Sadhana).
Redeeming the 'Fallen Woman' has always been a looming concern in the patriarchal setup of Indian cinema. Making films about women who have restored their dignity through the good offices of a 'progressive' male, makes the patriarchal entertainment industry feel good about itself.

Played by Ashwanth Ashok Kumar, Raasukutty is trans woman Shilpa's (Vijay Sethupathi) son in the film. What makes Raasukutty so special? To begin with, he is a child who plays a child, not a mini adult trying to impress. Though Raasukutty makes some of the film's most interesting observations, he does so as a child and is entirely believable. In how many ways do we love Shakespeare’s paean to love about the doomed alliance between two socially unequal lovers? I am not too sure how far back the co-directors of Sanam Teri Kasam (Stk), this week’s love-lorn saga would like us to go? Is it Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet or Erich Segal’s Love Story?
Either way, Stk is a winsome nugget on love romance and heartbreak with two very watchable newcomers helming the rapturous emotions, navigating the nifty numbers (Himesh Reshammiya) and namkeen dialogues through a coherently charted route to a tragic finale.

Sadhana Shivdasani, or Sadhana, as she was famously known in Hindi cinema, passed away quietly on Friday Christmas day December 25 at the Hinduja hospital in Mumbai. She lived and died a recluse. Luckily, she had a nephew with her when she passed away. I remember the one time that I managed to interview her. She was reluctant to talk and after a few questions quickly excused herself saying she had to rush to the bank. Sadhana was the ultimate enigma. No wonder, director Raj Khosla repeatedly cast her as the mystery woman in Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya and Anita. In the late 1950s and throughout 1960s, Sadhana excelled in roles that required a naturalistic approach. This, at a time when Indian mainstream cinema required exaggerated drama. Says Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Sadhanji preferred mellow drama to melodrama. Her performance in films like Bimal Roy's Parakh, Dev Anand's...

We were very close friends. And we-Sadhana, Waheeda Rehman and I would meet for dinner and movies regularly. Lately, she was besieged by problems. She was fighting five court cases for the custody of her home. Can you imagine this ill aging woman who never liked to be seen in public, all alone with fat files standing up in court all alone? Once she had fractured her leg and had to meet the Police Commissioner. She went to his office. He had to come down and meet her because she couldn't climb up. Waheeda and I wanted to meet her more often, just be there for her. But, she would not want...

Veteran actress Sadhana, a popular actress of the 60s and 70s breathed her last in Mumbai today morning. Reportedly, she was battling with cancer for a long time and was even admitted to Hinduja hospital recently. From what we hear, the body of the former actress was taken to her residence in Mumbai and many of her yesteryear actress colleagues like Waheeda Rehman visited her place to pay their last respects. Born in a Sindhi family, Sadhana aka Sadhana Shivdasani debuted in Bollywood with the 1960 film Love in Simla. While she is known for films like Hum Dono, Ek Musafir Ek Hasina, Mere Mehboob, Woh Kaun Thi, Mera Saaya among others, she also gained popularity tremendously in the world of Indian fashion with a special fringe hairstyle which is still known as the 'Sadhana cut'. We at Bollywood Hungama pay our condolences to this veteran actress. May her soul rest in peace.

“I always believe that my films should give some hope to the man who comes to watch them for those three hours. If he goes home on an optimistic note, I would feel satisfied at having done my duty.” – Yash Chopra

Everyone loves a Cinderella story and one that has a ghastly family, a spunky heroine, and one Prince Charming who can be a bit of a dope some of the time! The film, which introduced the lovely Sadhana to the screen, is one of the most fun and charming romances of the 60s. Love in Simla was one of the biggest hits of 1960 and deservedly so, the sparkling repartee and gorgeous cinematography makes it a gem to enjoy even now.
Unlike most Cinderellas who are the docile type, Sadhana plays the plucky and feisty heroine Sonia. She’s the unlucky orphan living with her genial uncle (Kishore Sahu), his tart-tongued wife (Shobhana Samarth), and their beautiful but vain daughter Sheela (Azra). They live in luxury in their Simla mansion, while relying on Sonia as their servant and as a burden. Simla was once the summer playground during the colonial period,...
