The young 20-nothing metro-waasi never had it so good. Or bad. After Freaky Chakra where a freaked-out sutradhar, played by veejay Ranvir Shorey, gets all foamy and frustrated when he can no longer control the destiny of the characters he creates, this time another veejay turned, ahem, actor Purab Kohli sets up a fey doll Veda (Nandita Das) to woo a superstitious friend Rohan (Rajiv Gopalakrishnan) as a joke and then behaves like Aamir Khan in the post-interval half of Dil Chahta Hai.

The prank gets a yucky yank when stupid Cupid, the devilish matchmaker Aditya, realizes he loves flaky Veda for himself. He sulks like a brat being denied his favourite television show and finally grins when she consents to be his girl.

The story and screenplay of this strongly citified fable on sexual liberation is credited to as many as seven writers. Too many cooks definitely don’t spoil this bubbly broth of uneven and yet endearing components from theatre, music videos, cinema, literature, soap operas, and sitcoms that merge with mirthful sighs.

Coming in the wake of the other films like Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai, Somnath Sen’s Leela, and Shashilal Nair’s Ek Chotisi Love Story about very young men being attracted to women old enough to be their moms, Freaky Chakra does suffer from a haven’t-we-seen-it-all disadvantage.

Fortunately for second-time director V.K. Prakash, his film is the most original among the films on the sexual diaspora. Its emotional graph swings from the ridiculously risible to the modestly poignant, sometimes combining both, as in the character of the pathetic Sunderam (Sachin Khedekar), the hypochondriac who keeps ringing...

Why does the well-qualified Kalki Koechlin always play such surly actors? She plays characters who will always find a way to make herself unhappy. She doesn’t disappoint, although it doesn’t help much that she looks nothing like Deepti Naval’s daughter in Goldfish, an oddly satisfying film about fractured lives looking for closure.

Since the film is set in London (though not shot with any touristic flourishes), the Indian characters don’t have to behave like they would if they were placed in the same situation back home. This is not to say that they are not shackled by their cultural heritage. But I am pretty sure the mother and daughter, played with powerful predilection by Naval and Koechlin, would never be allowed to behave the way they were in Ludhiana.

The newly appointed subedar is a despot. He laughs malevolently, asks for women at night in his tent, lashes, and loots villagers, stands haughtily astride, and casts his lustful gaze over the horizon until the women of the village organize themselves and confront him. Loosely based on a four-page-long Chunilal Madia story, Ketan Mehta’s 1987 film “Mirch Masala” chronicles the women’s struggle against patriarchy, casteism, and et al. social odds in pre-independence rural Gujarat.

A troubadour, dressed in white, along with his horse, passes through a topsy-turvy wilderness, impregnating the air with his enchanting folk dirge – that’s how “Mirch Masala” begins. The troubadour never appears again in the film; but as he passes, making his voyage toward the unknown, the camera moves on to capture the spice plantation where a miscreant breaks the head of a scarecrow, and we see Subedar (played by Naseeruddin Shah) for the first time,...

Filmmaker Prakash Jha and actress Deepti Naval’s daughter Dishaa Jhaa, who is making her debut as a series producer on a major Ott platform with ‘Sankalp’, has shared her experience working with the veteran actor Nana Patekar, adding that he cooked mutton very fondly for the team.

I feel that my job is to further the human conversation and this was a wonderful way to attempt to do that, Kripalani told Variety.

The actress will be seen on screen after a span of four years. She will be playing the role of a fashion designer in the show. While she was not on screen, she made sure to keep herself busy.

"I am coming back on TV after a gap of four years. My last project was a TV show titled ‘Meri Awaaz Hi Meri Pehchaan Hai' and it was a finite show. Mumbai, Dec 26 (Ians) Actress Anupria Goenka has an important role in the new web series Criminal Justice Behind Closed Doors, and she says the show speaks to women.

Behind Closed Doors is the second season of the Criminal Justice series, and Anupria returns as the criminal defence lawyer Nikhat Hussain. She says the second chapter of the series is a women-oriented story.

"I think this season speaks to women. In any given case, my sense of empathy kicks in when a woman is concerned. I think what she's going through and why she did a certain thing," she said.

Anupria is referring to the protagonist Anu Chandra, played by Kirti Kulhari, who stabs her husband, popular and super-successful lawyer Vikram Chandra (Jishhu Sengupta), who seems like a perfect husband and father to begin with.

So, she would specifically come to me for advice on the correct meaning of Hindi words and how to pronounce them, and then would also take feedback on her execution. Chandigarh, Oct 20 (Ians) Actor Deepti Naval, who suffered a heart attack in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, underwent angioplasty at the Fortis hospital in Mohali early Tuesday and her condition was stable, doctors said.

She suffered the first heart attack on Sunday and was brought to the hospital in a cardiac care ambulance late Monday.

Her condition was stable and will likely be discharged soon, a doctor told Ians.

The actress had been staying at her cottage in Manali for quite some time.

A strong selection of Indian films is among the highlights of the 21st Mumbai Film Festival. The festival, which runs Oct. 17-24, announced its lineup on Thursday.

The festival’s Spotlight strand boasts of five world premieres, including Arati Kadav’s much awaited sci-film “Cargo,” actor Seema Bhargava Pahwa’s directorial debut, the family drama “Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi,” Deepti Gupta’s document of a female artist’s fight for equality in modern India “Shut Up Sona,” Kamal Swaroop’s portrayal of a theatre troupe staging a mythological play “Samudra Manthan” and R.V. Ramani’s “Oh That’s Bhanu.” The strand also includes Goutam Ghose’s “The Wayfarers” that has its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival.
