Subhash K Jha refocuses the lens on the Aishwarya Rai drama, The Woman Who Walked Into Doors, the battered wife Paula keeps justifying her bruises by saying she, as a habit, walks into closed doors and hurts herself.
The battered wife Kiranjit in Jagmohan Mundhra’s Exposed jolting expose on domestic values never gets a chance to walk in or out of that closed London door where she lives with her brutal husband. She chooses her husband’s death over her own exit.
It’s amazing how the true-life Kiranjit Ahluwalia found freedom by setting her brutal husband on fire. In one of the film’s most sensitively delineated dialogues, Kiranjit says to her rather overly benign prison mates, “I’ve never felt freer in my life.”
What sort of trauma would it take for a woman to feel free in prison? Provoked answers the complicated question of domestic disharmony...

In a special This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha shares memories of his dear friend Rituparno Ghosh and his movie career including Memories In March.
By the time Rituparno Ghosh showed up as a man grieving for his dead partner in Sanjay Nag’s Memories In March, released on April 1, 2011, he had turned cinema into a weapon of anguished anger about his sexuality.
Bereavement and memories are a great high for celluloid drama. Some of the most poignant and memorable films of our times have tapped into the wounds of grief for creative juices and emerged trumps at the box office. Think of Meena Kumari mourning for her impotent marriage in Guru Dutt’s Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam or Supriya Choudhury’s smothered screams of protest for her wasted life in Ritwick Ghatak’s Meghe Dhaka Tara, or more recently, Nicole Kidman blaming the world around her for remaining...

A look back at Raja Krishan Menon‘s 2003 debut directorial Bas Yun Hi as it celebrates 22 years. We also get some insight as the director talks with Subhash K Jha.
The young 20-nothing metro-waasi never had it so good. Or bad. After Freaky Chakra where a freaked-out sutradhar, played by veejay Ranvir Shorey, gets all foamy and frustrated when he can no longer control the destiny of the characters he creates, this time another veejay turned, ahem, actor Purab Kohli sets up a fey doll Veda (Nandita Das) to woo a superstitious friend Rohan (Rajiv Gopalakrishnan) as a joke and then behaves like Aamir Khan in the post-interval half of Dil Chahta Hai.
The prank gets a yucky yank when stupid Cupid, the devilish matchmaker Aditya, realizes he loves flaky Veda for himself. He sulks like a brat being denied his favourite television show and finally grins when she consents to be his girl.

The story and screenplay of this strongly citified fable on sexual liberation is credited to as many as seven writers. Too many cooks definitely don’t spoil this bubbly broth of uneven and yet endearing components from theatre, music videos, cinema, literature, soap operas, and sitcoms that merge with mirthful sighs.
Coming in the wake of the other films like Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai, Somnath Sen’s Leela, and Shashilal Nair’s Ek Chotisi Love Story about very young men being attracted to women old enough to be their moms, Freaky Chakra does suffer from a haven’t-we-seen-it-all disadvantage.
Fortunately for second-time director V.K. Prakash, his film is the most original among the films on the sexual diaspora. Its emotional graph swings from the ridiculously risible to the modestly poignant, sometimes combining both, as in the character of the pathetic Sunderam (Sachin Khedekar), the hypochondriac who keeps ringing...

Goldfish
Starring Deepti Naval, Kalki Koechlin, Rajit Kapoor, Bharti Patel
Directed Pushan Kripalani
On Amazon Prime Video
Why does the well-qualified Kalki Koechlin always play such surly actors? She plays characters who will always find a way to make herself unhappy. She doesn’t disappoint, although it doesn’t help much that she looks nothing like Deepti Naval’s daughter in Goldfish, an oddly satisfying film about fractured lives looking for closure.
Since the film is set in London (though not shot with any touristic flourishes), the Indian characters don’t have to behave like they would if they were placed in the same situation back home. This is not to say that they are not shackled by their cultural heritage. But I am pretty sure the mother and daughter, played with powerful predilection by Naval and Koechlin, would never be allowed to behave the way they were in Ludhiana.

The newly appointed subedar is a despot. He laughs malevolently, asks for women at night in his tent, lashes, and loots villagers, stands haughtily astride, and casts his lustful gaze over the horizon until the women of the village organize themselves and confront him. Loosely based on a four-page-long Chunilal Madia story, Ketan Mehta’s 1987 film “Mirch Masala” chronicles the women’s struggle against patriarchy, casteism, and et al. social odds in pre-independence rural Gujarat.
A troubadour, dressed in white, along with his horse, passes through a topsy-turvy wilderness, impregnating the air with his enchanting folk dirge – that’s how “Mirch Masala” begins. The troubadour never appears again in the film; but as he passes, making his voyage toward the unknown, the camera moves on to capture the spice plantation where a miscreant breaks the head of a scarecrow, and we see Subedar (played by Naseeruddin Shah) for the first time,...

“Let’s just get through this,” Anamika (Kalki Koechlin) says brusquely as she pushes past her mother in the doorway and heads up the stairs to her old room. We understand very quickly that the relationship between Anamika and her mother, Sadhana (Deepti Naval), is fraught, and that Anamika had left her neighbourhood and her mother behind. But Anamika gets a call from a neighbour, Laxmi Natrajan (Bharti Patel) after her mother causes a fire while making pakodas. “Fire brigade?” asks Anamika. “Yeah, fire brigade, social services, social security, local council,” Laxmi tells her. I didn’t say it would be easy.”

Indian actresses Kalki Koechlin and Deepti Naval will star in the upcoming film ‘Goldfish’ directed by cinematographer Pushan Kripalani. The film will explore the subject of dementia.
The film follows the story of Anamika, a half-Indian half-English woman, who returns home to the UK, to deal with her mother’s dementia and the scars of her childhood.
“It’s very difficult to make independent cinema, as it does not get funded easily and so it’s taken me this long to get to make this film. I feel that dealing with larger questions is only possible by examining the smaller parts of human relationships. I feel that my job is to further the human conversation and this was a wonderful way to attempt to do that, Kripalani told Variety.
Kripalani is returning to the director’s chair seven years after his acclaimed directorial debut ‘The Threshold’.

Bollywood actor Pankaj Tripathi has recalled teaching Hindi to co-stars Anupriya Goenka and Kirti Kulhari on the set of their upcoming web series, Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors.
"Anupriya Goenka and Kirti Kulhari would patiently listen to me as I shared and taught them a few 'shudh' Hindi words -- especially the legal terminology. Anupriya's character Nikhat Hussain is leading Anu Chandra's (Kirti) defence team with Madhav Mishra (the character Pankaj plays). So, she would specifically come to me for advice on the correct meaning of Hindi words and how to pronounce them, and then would also take feedback on her execution. I really appreciated her for being open to advice, and also my criticism," Pankaj Tripathi recalled.
"The Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors set had a very positive environment, where the cast and crew would have engaging discussions on topics beyond the show. We would laugh, eat and spend a lot of time together,...

The only cure to old age is death. The only remedy to loneliness during old age is memories, at least for some. Others who prefer to live in the here-and-now may choose to seek reluctant company. There are stories of how veteran actress Nadira would bribe her guests to stay a little longer with drinks.
Violet Stoneham, the character that Jennifer Kapoor played in Aparna Sen's "36 Chowringhee Lane" allowed a young couple to use her apartment for sex, just so that she would be in company. Creaky bed notwithstanding.
There is a couple making noisy love in "Yours Truly", though their sounds of passion sound fairly phoney, as though they were faking it just to make the ageing protagonist feel lonelier.
In Yours Truly, Soni Razdan playing an autumnal Bengali woman Mithi Kumar in Kolkata, is a direct descendent of Violet Stoneham, though far less intimidated by her solitude.

Bareilly Ki Barfi
Starring Ayushmann Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Directed by Ashiwini Iyer Tiwari

In fact she adheres to another kind of stereotyping that Hindi cinema has lately embraced. You know, the small town girl who is hip and happy, sassy and sexy, rides two-wheelers and smokes whenever she can get her hands on a cancer stick, and when a prospective groom asks her if she is a virgin Bitti retorts, “No I am not… are you?”
