Twd Boss Reveals The Ones Who Live Was ‘Very Different’ From Original Film Trilogy — Plus, the Latest Word on Season 2
Image
The following contains spoilers from the finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live wrapped its six-episode run on Sunday, by having Rick and Michonne — played by Andrew Lincoln and Dania Gurira, who co-created the offshoot with Walking Dead chief content officer Scott M. Gimple — (barely) succeed in their plan to find and destroy the dossier on Alexandria that Jadis had hidden, and then vanquish not just Major Beale, but blow up the Civic Republic of Philadelphia’s entire military.

This The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live review contains spoilers.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Episode 5

So is she Anne or is she Jadis? Is there even a difference? One of Rick Grimes’ many reclamation projects, like Gabriel Stokes (Seth Gilliam), Jadis/Anne (Pollyanna McIntosh) was a character in need of redemption. As the former leader of the hostile Junkyardigans and an ally to both the Ricktatorship and the Saviors, she’s been a character constantly out for one person: herself. Always seeking a better deal, always working to ensure the survival of herself and her community, Jadis has become something of a convert to the ways of the Crm. She seems like a real true believer, but any fan of The Walking Dead knows that she might talk the talk and walk the walk, but her motivations are known only to herself.

“Become” makes it perfectly clear,...

‘Walking Dead’ EPs Angela Kang & Scott M. Gimple On The Fate Of (Spoiler) & Tonight‘s Penultimate “Family” Episode, Next Week’s Series Finale & Spinoff Twists
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s “Family” episode of The Walking Dead, the penultimate episode of the series.

“For the longest time, we were just fighting to survive,” declares Judith Grimes (Cailey Fleming) in a voiceover that kicks off tonight’s “Family,” the penultimate episode of The Walking Dead.

“Trying to get back what we lost,” the daughter of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) continues over a montage of zombie killings from the AMC’s series 11 seasons, and some throwback music from pivotal episodes. “My family, we would do anything to protect each other. And we’re fighting now for something else, something bigger. A new beginning.”

Penned by Magali Lozano & Erik Mountain & Kevin Deiboldt, and directed by Sharat Raju, this 176th episode of the zombie apocalypse show based on Robert Kirkman’s now concluded comics shows Twd still knows how to deliver an annihilating gut punch. As...

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Season Finale Review
Image
This The Walking Dead: World Beyond review contains spoilers.

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Episodes 9 and 10

Huck (Annet Mahendru) is a woman with a mission, and it’s not to make sure everyone gets to the Civic Republic Militia research facility safely. From the very opening of The Walking Dead: World Beyond‘s ninth episode, “The Deepest Cut,” as Huck stares into the darkness while everyone sleeps, it’s clear she’s facing a choice between the people that she has come to know and love as friends in Felix and the kids, and her loyalty to the Crm, her mother, and the Crm’s idea of the greater good. Throughout the series, when prompted, Huck has cautioned Hope in particular to make the choice that benefits everyone, not the choice that simply benefits her, and that encouragement to push hope towards that concept of the greater good makes much...

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Episode 1

Growing up is never easy, but growing up in a world where safety is clustering behind walls with a few hundred other people and visiting the next town over might involve a helicopter trip or a dangerous days-long trek through walker-infested wilderness is something else entirely. It’s been a decade since the Night the Sky Fell on The Walking Dead: World Beyond, and since then, Iris (Aliyah Royale) and her sister Hope (Alexa Mansour) have grown up in the relative safety and normalcy of the Campus Colony, formerly Nebraska State University. Certainly, like all colonies, there were times of trouble, but as Iris wakes up and heads out for a school trip, things are prosperous. Campus Colony is home to 9600 or so people, and things are as normal as could be. People gossip, a piano plays,...

Walking Dead: World Beyond Review: Second Spinoff Is Undead on Arrival
Image
When I mentioned to a colleague that I’d just watched the premiere of AMC’s second spinoff of The Walking Dead, World Beyond, he asked just one question: “Do you think there’s an audience for it?” And I had to admit, I do.

The series, which follows teenage sisters Iris (Aliyah Royale) and Hope (Alexa Mansour) as they trek from Nebraska to New York in search of their scientist father, is probably just right for younger viewers who are more interested in growing pains than zombie bites. It even has in shady Crm leader Elizabeth (Julia Ormond) a...

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Introduces Its Young Characters
Robert Kirkman
Created in October of 2003 by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead franchise is now old enough to drive and nearly old enough to vote. With that in mind, the latest Twd franchise is going to be injecting some fresh blood into the proceedings.

Premiering on Oct. 4 after The Walking Dead season 10 finale, The Walking Dead: World Beyond will be a unique experiment for the long-running AMC monolith. For starters, World Beyond won’t be reaching anywhere near the flagship series’ staggering 11-season run. The network has already announced that World Beyond will be a limited engagement, receiving two seasons of 10-episode each.

Then there’s the fact that World Beyond features a cast of young characters who have lived the majority of their lives among the walking dead and have grown accustomed to the apocalypse.

“Our story picks up ten years after the apocalypse and our characters have grown up in this place of safety,...

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Review (Spoiler Free)
Image
This spoiler-free review is based on the first two episodes of The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

One of the best things about The Walking Dead‘s expanding universe is that it gives the show’s more talented writers and more skilled producers an opportunity to put their own creative stamp on the show and its legacy. Angela Kang took the reigns of the main property and has improved The Walking Dead significantly under her reign; her pending spinoff with Carol and Daryl shows promise, simply because she’s proven herself as a showrunner and she’s taking over a show with two of the most popular characters still kicking around Alexandria. With The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Matthew Negrete gets his chance to step out on his own, and the initial results are very promising indeed.

Like Angela Kang, Negrete is one of the most highly regarded scribes in the show’s writers’ room,...

The Walking Dead: World Beyond Release Date Revealed
The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020)
The long wait for The Walking Dead: World Beyond is almost over. Well, not really. But at least we now know when that wait will end.

As promised, AMC announced during its The Walking Dead panel at Comic-Con@Home that The Walking Dead: World Beyond will premiere at 10 p.m. Et on October 4, 2020. Just as was originally planned for April 12, 2020, The Walking Dead season 10 finale will serve as its lead-in. World Beyond will continue to air at 10 p.m. on subsequent Sundays with Fear the Walking Dead season 6 airing at 9 p.m.

When the show was delayed from its original April premiere date, The Walking Dead: World Beyond has already completed filming, leaving some fans to wonder why the show had been delayed in the first place. The delay could have been related to other delays within The Walking Dead universe. Both The Walking Dead season 11 and Fear the Walking Dead...

There’s still a World Beyond for The Walking Dead universe. It’s just not going to arrive until later this year.

Though AMC does not mention a reason for the delay in its announcement, it is undoubtedly due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 16 Review: The Storm
Winter isn't coming on The Walking Dead, winter is here with a vengeance.

This The Walking Dead review contains spoilers.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 16

The biggest threat to humanity in the wake of the zombie apocalypse isn't the random hordes of walkers that occasionally show up, or the skin-wearing thugs who kidnap and kill their friends. The biggest threat is the world around them.

Rivers rush and surge unchecked, knocking down bridges. Trees fall, blocking roads and making travel and trade difficult. The land refuses to yield food. Rainstorms and animals ruin the few crops that the land begrudgingly gives up. Summer burns, spring allergies wreak havoc, and now winter is here. And winter is dangerous in a society where electricity is based on solar power and the most efficient heat comes from indoor fires.

So how did they turn Georgia into a winter hell-scape? I'm not sure; winter...

The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 11 Review: Bounty
The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 11 realizes that some things are worth risking everything for…even if it's just a lightbulb.

This The Walking Dead review contains spoilers.

The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 11

The Walking Dead Season 9 has been going from strength to strength since the “demise” of Rick Grimes. Last week exposed a vulnerability that Daryl hasn't shown since the earliest seasons and gave Henry a good reason to take over Carl's stories from the comic book. This week, The Walking Dead mines a rich vein of light comedy out of the adventures of Ezekiel, Carol, and the rest of the Kingdom's cast of random characters in a way that hasn't been that evident since the early days of the Kingdom's presence on the show.

On its face, The Kingdom is laughable. After all, it's a bunch of people gathered around what is basically a cosplaying zookeeper with dreadlocks who...

"The Walking Dead" - Exit 'Rick Grimes'
Sneak Peek extended footage from "The Walking Dead" episode "What Comes After", marking the last appearance of Andrew Lincoln as 'Rick Grimes', written by Matthew Negrete and directed by Greg Nicotero, that aired November 4, 2018 on AMC:

"...'Rick' wakes from his last lucid dream, with 'walkers' closing in on him, as he leads them towards the bridge.

"He stumbles just short of the bridge, but just as the walkers get close, 'Michonne' leads a large group of his allies to take out the horde.

"Michonne urges Rick to keep on fighting, as he realizes Michonne is now his only family.

"But this is just another vision; he then finds himself alone just off the bridge with the horde still following him.

"He gets back up and continues to lead the walkers across the bridge as the river waters rise.

"But to Rick's dismay, the weight of the walkers...

‘The Walking Dead’ Says Goodbye to Its Hero — and An Era of TV
When Rick Grimes first rode onto our TV sets on Halloween night in 2010, Don Draper was still mistreating women and drinking like a fish on Mad Men. Walter White was running a drug empire in Albuquerque; Nucky Thompson was ruling Atlantic City like a tyrant; and Dexter Morgan was murdering his way through Miami’s criminal underworld and on his way to becoming the most mocked lumberjack in television history. Then along came handsome English actor Andrew Lincoln, playing a small-town Georgia sheriff’s deputy, with a spiffy-looking cowboy hat and relatable goals.

‘The Walking Dead’ Review: Rick Grimes Says Goodbye In ‘What Comes After’
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for “The Walking Dead” Season 9, Episode 5, “What Comes After.”]

This Week On “The Walking Dead”

Writing Rick Grimes off “The Walking Dead” is not an enviable task. From the show’s opening moments, Rick Grimes has been our eyes as we watched the world slide into zombie hell. Sure, the show became an ensemble before the end of its short first season, but through all the years Rick has been the constant; he’s the character everyone else orbits around, the one who leads, the one guy you know won’t be killed each episode (no matter how much of a drag that becomes). But now, here we are, with Rick’s much publicized departure. How does the show handle it?

What episode writers Scott M. Gimple and Matthew Negrete have settled on for Rick’s exit is “noble sacrifice punctuated by ‘Christmas Carol’-esque visitations from past cast members,” which...

‘The Walking Dead’ preview trailer: ‘Get some Kleenex and popcorn’ for Rick Grimes’ final episode, teases showrunner [Watch]
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
“Get some Kleenex and popcorn and friends together,” teased “The Walking Dead” showrunner Angela Kang about Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) highly anticipated final episode, which airs Sunday, November 4 on AMC. “It’s a big, epic story,” she told Chris Hardwick during “Talking Dead” immediately following the airing of this week’s episode “The Obliged,” which ended with Rick seemingly at death’s door. ‘The Walking Dead’ Ratings Dip To Series Low As Andrew Lincoln’s Exit Approaches
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of The Walking Dead’s October 21 episode.

Three episodes into Season 9 of The Walking Dead and things are in a high-wire state of flux, and we’re not just talking about how Andrew Lincoln will be leaving the AMC series based on Robert Kirkman’s zombie apocalypse comics come November 4.

On Sunday’s third episode “Warning Signs,” we learned that Lincoln’s Rick Grimes wants to have a baby with Danai Gurira‘s Michonne, and that the fragile peace that the former sheriff’s deputy has built among former enemies is starting to fray, to put it mildly. On the other hand, Norman Reedus’ Daryl Dixon and Lauren Cohan’s Maggie Rhee have taken a decidedly more ruthless ruling hand than Lincoln’s bridge-building Grimes, and the body count is rising, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan looking to be next.

Yet for all...

I've never actually seen the show This Is Us, but I follow enough people on Twitter who love it to know that it's basically sadness porn seemingly designed to wring tears from the eyes of anyone who happens to stop the dial on the channel. There's nothing particularly subtle or understated about it; it's a weepie and it makes people weep, and that's wonderful if that's what you're into. Every commercial for the show is a quiet announcer speaking in a deep, mellifluous voice about how lives will be changed forever while Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. 8.7 Time For After

The Walking Dead is a show with a lot of interesting characters who speak in interesting ways. Negan is probably the most obvious one; he spins long sentences and crams in strange, infantile profanity. Rick has lots of long speeches that allow writers to really dig into a specific topic. Jadis is... well, she's different, but not entirely complicated, you just cut out non-essential words and boil everything down to noun-verb or verb-adjective phrases. But the character that has to be the most fun to write for is Eugene Porter, and he's the...

8.3 Monsters

The Walking Dead spends a lot of time arguing about the place of humanity in the post-apocalyptic world. Not the place of human beings as a species, but the place of human beings as a concept. The old rules versus the new rules, ruthless efficiency versus charity, second chances versus preventing revenge, that kind of thing. Usually these take the form we saw last week, which was basically Tara and Jesus arguing until the charity case in question tried to hold Jesus hostage to make his escape. The Walking Dead season 8 episode 2 review: The Damned

8.2 The Damned

Two episodes in, The Walking Dead's eighth season has been nothing but action. There have been little fits and starts, and pauses for breath, but for the most part, two episodes in, we've seen a whole lot of people firing machine guns and a whole lot of cars covered in salvaged metal driving in front of armed compounds to wall people inside. There's also another reminder of just how effective zombies can be in this new environment as a siege weapon.

The team Dwight sent off in the first episode is holed up in some sort of compound, cleaning and maintaining their weapons. There's a bit of light comedy involving a goofy screw-up...

'The Walking Dead' Recap: Village of the Damned
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
The Walking Dead's Season Eight premiere last week was undoubtedly action-packed; in retrospect, however, you can see how most of the hour was about the bluster before the battle. All the fireworks happened in the last third – and even that was just the opening salvo for what could be weeks of warfare. It's in this week's episode – "The Damned" – where the conflict really ramps up, on multiple fronts. And by the closing credits, there's no sign of any peace treaties getting drawn up any time soon.

There are two...

New Video Highlights How The Walking Dead Characters Are Brought To Life
The Walking Dead has always been different from other zombie movies and TV shows because it’s fueled first and foremost by its characters and their own stories, relationships and rivalries.

Usually the human cast in something like this are just there to be picked off one by one by the flesh-eating monsters. Thanks to the stellar work from the writers and the actors on Twd, though, we’ve grown to care deeply for these people over the years – which makes it all the more emotional and shocking when they meet a grisly fate.

In this new clip that’s surfaced today, seen above, the writers and producers of the hit AMC show talk about what makes our favorite characters so special and why they’re a joy to write for.

“There’s something about The Walking Dead that makes it, I think, very different from certainly any of show I’ve worked on,...

The Walking Dead season 7 episode 16 review: The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life

7.16 The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life

The Walking Dead has been indulging in extended episodes for most of the seventh season, and for the most part, it hasn't worked out in a way that is positive for the show. The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life, the season finale, splays out over about ninety minutes of television time, once you account for commercials. Does the show do anything with that elongated running time? Not really; as it has throughout the season, The Walking Dead uses expanded episodes merely to pad the advertising slots for sale, and not so much to advance the story.

7.12 Say Yes

The Walking Dead has never been a show with a lot of laughs or charm. Its default facial expression is a face-wrinkled frown, like smelling one of the show's titular walking dead after a few too many days out in the Georgia sun. That makes as much sense as anything about the show would. If everyone you've ever known is walking around trying to eat your face, and you haven't had a hot meal or a hot bath in a year or longer, you'd probably be pretty grumpy, too.

That unrelenting gloom is one of the things that the show is regularly knocked about,...

'The Walking Dead' Recap: Love, Actually
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
The late critic Roger Ebert used to cite something he called "Brotman's Law," which essentially stated that if nothing interesting had happened within the first 20 minutes of a film, nothing was ever going to. That rule can't really be applied to The Walking Dead: It has an odd habit of springing its nastiest surprises at the end of hours that are otherwise talky, dry, and stubbornly incident-free. All of which means that two-thirds of the way through this week's episode – "Say Yes” – after a long stretch of not-much-to-write-home-about, when...

7.8 Hearts Still Beating

The Walking Dead is a show that's depended a lot on its ability to cleverly execute a very specific type of arc. Rick and company face a big threat, they fall apart, and then at the end they all come back together and beat whatever big threat they've been squared off with. Not everyone lives, and new characters replace old friends, but the core of the show remains the same. Rick pulls his group together, everyone rallies, and some obstacle is overcome. Some things change, but the ultimate finish is the same.

This season, The Walking Dead has tried hard to create a new threat, something Rick won't be able to overcome without a serious struggle,...

7.2 The Well

The seventh season premiere of The Walking Dead was hard to watch. No matter how you actually felt about it, it was a slog. Downbeat, emotional, violent, nihilistic... it was every complaint every critic has ever had about the show, put into the same episode at essentially the same time. This isn't a world with a lot of humour or colour, especially not these days, but when The Walking Dead pauses long enough to allow the home viewer to take the world in and crack a smile, it's very effective.

Witness Carol's introduction to The Kingdom.

'The Walking Dead' Recap: Kingdom Come
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
Even in a zombie apocalypse, location is everything. The past six years of The Walking Dead have been like the most intense, endless House Hunters episode ever, as Rick Grimes and his band of survivors tour the ravaged American southeast, looking for a place with a roomy backyard – and preferably, neighbors who won't try to kill them and take all their stuff. They've journeyed from abandoned prisons to gated suburbs, and at every stop the facilities have been a little bit nicer, the future a little brighter. And now, in...

Here's Why 'The Walking Dead' Season 6 Cliffhanger Had to Happen
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
Fans aren't happy this morning. For months now, they've been promised that the arrival of Jeffrey Dean Morgan's http://movieweb.com/walking-dead-season-6-finale-cliffhanger-negan-victim/Negan would bring the death of one much-loved Walking Dead character. And while that certainly happened, we're still as in the dark about who this dead character is as we were when we first found out this was how The Walking Dead Season 6 finale would end sometime last year. The build up to the episode titled Last Day on Earth worked as its own contained cliffhanger. Now, as we impatiently wait through summer, this cliffhanger has become extended and expanded, and it's quite irritating. But showrunner Scott M. Gimple claims it's all for the greater good of the show. And not just some stunt.

The Walking Dead Season 6 went out swinging, literally, as Negan played a rousing game of Eenie Meenie before choosing his victim. Yes,...

Is The Walking Dead trying to kill off its fanbase along with its cast members? Here's our spoiler-filled review of the season 6 finale...

This review contains spoilers.

6.16 Last Day On Earth

When a show's executive producer is taking cues from Lost, is that a good thing or a bad thing? For this half-season, The Walking Dead's actors and crew have promised to leave viewers shocked and dismayed with the season finale, with actors describing being sickened as they read the script. Would this sickening display be translated to the screen in the lurid style that The Walking Dead is known for?

After an odd cold opening featuring a blacked-out screen, lens flare, and whistling, The Walking Dead kicks off its season six finale with Morgan following the clues to Carol. A sign reading “You Are Alive,” a horse missing a rider, a dead body with a crucifix clutched in its hand.

Alexandria's routines start to chafe in the latest gory episode of The Walking Dead season 6, Twice As Far...

This review contains spoilers.

6.14 Twice As Far

The curse of The Walking Dead returns. Throughout the show's run, it's seemed that the moment a character came to some sort of realization about life in the post-apocalypse, they spent a lot of time making speeches about it and then immediately died. That seemed to be changing a little bit, with more characters appearing to be allowed to grow without immediate death, and then Denise happened. Two steps forward, one step back, all in the name of shock.

Denise, like all the Alexandrians, has been trying to adapt to a world in which they haven't been forced to participate until Rick and the gang arrived and shattered their illusion of safety via misadventure. The Wolves came, Walkers came, and everyone in Alexandria banded together,...

6.11 Knots Untie

Everyone loves a good binge-watch. I burned through the first season of Game Of Thrones in two days or so, and I made similar short work of the first season of Hannibal. It's satisfying. There's no need to sweat through a cliffhanger, you just keep right on going and find out what happens. You can keep doing that as long as you want, skipping appointments, blowing off work, and locking yourself away from family and friends until you find out just what happens to (main character) and his run-in with (antagonist or antagonists). Episodic TV doesn't have that option; you're stuck watching 52 minutes at a time until next week, and if you're stuck with a feeling of dread, then you stay dreadful for awhile.

The Walking Dead season 6 episode 8 review: Start To Finish

One mediocre episode doesn't detract what has been a great half season of The Walking Dead, but it's still a disappointment...

This review contains spoilers.

6.8 Start To Finish

One of the best things about dying on The Walking Dead is that you always get a lot to say before you shamble off the mortal coil and find your way to your shallow, post-apocalyptic grave. That usually works out really well for the actors, who get to do something dramatic and capture a lot of attention, and it's typically fun for the writers, because they get to write up some sort of dramatic or emotionally resonant dialogue where a dying person conveys some truth to a still-living person. Given the set-up for this week's episode—a building damaged in the fight with the Wolves collapses into the wall—it's only natural that people plural are going to die,...
