Narrator of key moments in cycling since the mid-70s, Liggett’s story includes his controversial support of Lance Armstrong
Here is a documentary of pretty niche interest, it has to be said: the life and times of Tour de France commentator Phil Liggett, who was a ubiquitous fixture on TV coverage of the event in English-speaking countries for years. Well, Liggett appears to be an interesting character, if John Craven looked a bit like Terence Stamp and held forth with a touch of Alan Partridge, but with a runtime of a shade under two hours, this is pushing it a bit.
Born on the Wirral, and currently residing with his wife Trish in a game reserve in South Africa where he helps with efforts to protect rhinos from poachers, Liggett is one of those old-school sports broadcasters – like John Motson or Clive Everton – whose natural communication skills and unswerving...

You know that subtle annoyance you feel as you’re watching football on the TV? That niggling irritation you feel as you listen to football conversations in the pub? That impulse you can’t seem to control that makes you detox from football every fifth year of your life? Have no fear, for many of us share the same symptoms; we are all suffering from Football Cliche Aversion.
While your extreme responses are a good thing – this is just your immune system trying to protect you – you’re at greater risk of developing Cliche Syndrome yourself if you spend a lot of time digesting the views of football pundits and former players turned television personalities. The syndrome creeps up slowly: first you start quoting John Motson, then you’re laughing at Lineker’s jokes. Before you know it you’re fully parroting Alan Shearer with a bit of Lawro thrown in for poetic advantage,...

Match of the Day celebrates its 50th anniversary this week, after launching back in August 1964 with a game between Arsenal and Liverpool.
Half a century later, after five decades of triumph and tragedy for football fans across the country, the UK's flagship football programme is still going strong and remains as iconic as ever.
To celebrate this, Digital Spy has collated its own Premier League table of Motd icons from past and present. Using a (likely contentious) points system based around football knowledge, longevity on the show and a certain 'magic factor' that makes them a warm presence on our screens, this is our just-for-fun chart of the biggest names in its history.

I never thought I'd ever say this, but ITV aren't as bad as everyone makes out when it comes to live football. Hear me out - it's not as crazy as it may first sound.
For years, I've been baffled that anyone would choose to watch ITV over BBC One if given the choice. However, as this year's World Cup has proved so far, both channels have had their fair share of gaffes and errors.
The BBC is pretty stellar when it comes to live tennis, snooker, athletics and many other sports, and Match of the Day is clearly light years ahead of ITV's The Premiership, but has ITV suddenly gained back some ground this year?
There's probably two words that you're thinking which throws out my argument: Adrian Chiles. The former BBC man has become the face of ITV football, possibly because they're stuck with him and don't know where to plonk him.

With a festival of football about to take over your TV screens for the summer, we caught up with the BBC pundits and presenters heading out to Brazil to ask the big questions.
Who is going to win it? Are England doomed? And what on earth do we do if it goes to penalties?
England's chances?
Things don't look too cheery for Roy's boys. Getting out of the group stage is being treated as a major achievement, and even getting that far is being too optimistic for some of the pundits.
Mark Chapman: "I can't see them getting out of the group. I don't know if that makes me pessimistic, realistic or what. I just can't seem them getting past Uruguay. Thankfully, I think fans are more realistic and the media are being more realistic this time. We haven't seen any England players wrapped in the St George's flag saying...

Former BBC sports broadcaster David Coleman has passed away at the age of 87 following a short illness.
The presenter was born on April 26, 1926 in Alderley Edge, Cheshire. His immediate family hailed from County Cork, Ireland and Coleman spent his early years as a competitive runner. He began his career in journalism working at the Stockport Express and also worked for the British Army Newspaper Unit during his time in military service.
David Coleman dies: Stars pay tribute to veteran BBC presenter
Coleman became the editor of the Cheshire Country Express at the age of 22. He was unable to participate in trials for the 1952 British Olympics team because of injury, and instead contacted the BBC to see if he could get involved with their athletics coverage.
After providing him with occasional work, the BBC offered him a more permanent role in 1954. Coleman then moved to Birmingham to work as a news assistant and sports editor.

It feels like yesterday that Alan Hansen famously wrote off Manchester United's young side at the beginning of the 1995/96 Premier League season, insisting that "you'll never win anything with kids". Yet, here we are over 18 years later, still talking about that very team, enough to warrant a much-anticipated documentary.
The Class of 92 centres around six members of that season's winning side, who rose from the ranks of United's youth team to become some of the most celebrated players in the history of the game. On paper, one may feel this would be aimed purely at Manchester United fans, but soon after the initial introductions, this clearly isn't the case.

Fifa 13 is always a bit of a strange beast to review. To the uninitiated, it is pretty taxing to tell a new version from the old. Impossible in fact. But to those that live, breath and sleep Fifa, each game is a vastly different entity to the others. Some people only own a console because of Fifa, and would never dream of playing anything else. With this in mind, when I slipped into play EA’s demo of the new Fifa 13 at Gamescom last week, it was with a slight air of apprehension about being able to really delve into the depths of what is new, and how it affects the beautiful game.
