This Underrated Hayao Miyazaki Series Puts a Steampunk Twist on Sherlock Holmes
Image
If you’re a fan of animated Sherlock Holmes adaptations like The Great Mouse Detective, you need to check out Sherlock Hound. This animated series originally aired in 1984 and is now available on Prime Video. In this adorable series, the famous detective Sherlock (voiced by Larry Moss in the English dub) is an anthropomorphic dog. Hayao Miyazaki, the animation legend behind Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ponyo, was the original director attached to the series and worked on many of the episodes. Other directors on the series include Kyosuke Mikuriya who is known for Lupin the 3rd. Even the episodes Miyazaki didn’t direct still retain his style. Like Howl’s Moving Castle, the world of Sherlock Hound includes steampunk elements that give it a distinctive flair.

Fiscal Spotlight: Men and Women Collide In Three Angsty Shorts
Image
All interpersonal relationships are complicated. But there’s just something classically (even banally) fraught in the complex negotiation of emotion between Male and Female, a knotty 50-foot Route 66 twine ball full of interwoven power dynamics, sexual dysfunction and societal expectation. The heat fractals thrown off by this ceaseless Xx/Xy friction have propelled 10,000 of human civilization and countless works of art and storytelling—from Bible stories to sexy Netflix originals like Fair Play and May December. Or, for that matter, the three projects in this month’s Fiscal Spotlight.

Each of these three short narrative films center female protagonists, unmoored in the midst of an existential crisis brought on by a male counterpart. In two of the films, the male in question is a romantic foil—or at least perceived to be. The third explores the dynamic between student and educator, placing its dynamic in the context of artistic potential...

‘Pam & Tommy’ Star Lily James Understands Why Pamela Anderson Didn’t Want to Watch Her Portrayal
Image
Sebastian Stan was on set and Lily James was in the middle of a massage when the Emmy nominations were announced earlier this month. Both became first time nominees, thanks to their work on the Hulu limited series “Pam & Tommy,” which was also nominated for outstanding limited or anthology series.

The Emmy nominated pair guest on the Awards Circuit podcast this week – in separate interviews – and discuss how they immersed themselves into the roles of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee. James also reveals what it was like going back and watching “Baywatch” to prepare for the role and the stress of putting herself in Anderson’s shoes during some of the emotionally grueling scenes. ‘Fresh’ Star Sebastian Stan Unlocked His Character by Working with Famous Ted Bundy Expert
Image
[Editor’s note: The following post contains some spoilers for “Fresh.”]

There are plenty of twists and turns on offer in Mimi Cave’s delightfully demented directorial debut, “Fresh,” but perhaps the most thrilling is the steady revelation of just what the hell is going on with Sebastian Stan’s character Steve. Co-starring Daisy Edgar-Jones as the unlucky-in-love Noa, the film — which debuted to strong reviews at Sundance and hits Hulu today — starts off as something of a rom-com, with Noa and Steve meeting cute at the local grocery store, starting up a relationship, and eventually heading out on a weekend away together.

So far, so charming. Until, of course, said weekend away reveals Steve’s real plans for the lovely Noa, which, let’s just say, involve using her body for shocking, horrible ends. As alluring as Steve appears to be, there’s a true darkness to him, one that Stan was equal parts eager and scared to explore.

James L. Brooks Talks ‘The Edge of Seventeen,’ How to Best Serve a Movie, and Driving Jack Nicholson Crazy
Writer, director, and producer James L. Brooks has had the pleasure of producing some attention-grabbing debut films, including Say Anything and Bottle Rocket. The latest project Brooks felt compelled to support, The Edge of Seventeen, is the directorial debut of Kelly Fremon Craig, whose first produced script was the 2009 feature Post Grad.

Craig’s film is a refreshingly honest comedy. Its high-school kids actually look, talk, and act like high-school kids. Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld), her favorite teacher (Woody Harrelson), and her family and friends aren’t archetypes. Like some of James L. Brooks’ best characters, they’re immediately recognizable.

The Academy Award-winning writer-director behind Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, and As Good as It Gets, recently discussed Craig’s film with us, his approach to producing, and how to best serve a movie.

The Film Stage: The second draft of the script was what really resonated with you, correct?

International Talent at Mexican Residency: Alexander Albrecht
I met Alexander Albrecht at the new recently held Mexican Residency Program "Pueblo Magico."  Typical of the diversity at this workshop for eight to ten first and second time filmmakers from all over the globe, he was born and raised in Switzerland and resides in Mexico, Berlin and Zurich. He graduated from the European Film Actors School Zurich, trained at the Susan Batson Studio in New York and trained with Larry Moss. He is fluent in German, French, English and Italian. He has worked in several theater, TV and cinema productions. Albrecht wrote his first film in 2013, in which he starred, namely the short "La Boda De Baba" directed by Lucia Carreras and produced by Machete Producciones and the Mexican Film Institute.

He is currently writing and rehearsing an adaptation of the famous Novel White Nights written by the young Dostoyevsky, directed by Lioudmila Babkina Meier, which will be performed on several Zurich stages. For the past two years, alongside Alexandra Edmondson from Australia, he has been writing his first feature film "Brooklyn Treehouse".

"Brooklyn Treehouse" is about four young creative types who come from various places to New York and end up sharing an apartment with an eccentic French artist.  Once there, they are pushed to make decisions about their own lives.

Christian Slater: The Hollywood Flasback Interview
I interviewed actor Christian Slater in November, 2008 for Venice Magazine. Having long had a reputation as an "enfant terrible" in his youth, Slater surprised me somewhat with his calm, measured demeanor and thoughtful outlook. He was promoting his well-reviewed, but ultimately short-lived, TV series "My Own Worst Enemy," which we discussed a bit, but Slater was eager to reflect on his entire career and life, which he did with aplomb. My other memory of the chat is that during our dinner, the power went out in the restaurant or hotel where we met (the location of which has been lost to time) and the halogen streetlights outside casting our talk in a strange, other-worldly glow for a good 30 minutes. All these factors made our meeting a memorable one. Slater can currently be seen on the new USA Network series "Mr. Robot," which is also being lauded critically, and will hopefully...

Monty Clift
Matt Bomer's long-rumoured Montgomery Clift biopic has been picked up by HBO.

The movie will mark Bomer's latest collaboration with the pay channel following his Emmy-nominated performance in The Normal Heart.

Bomer had been attached to star as Hollywood legend Clift dating back to when the project started as a possible independent film.

Monty Clift will be directed by Larry Moss (The Syringa Tree) from a script by Christopher Lovick, reports Deadline.

Love Is Strange duo Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias have been brought in to re-work Lovick's screenplay.

Clift became one of Hollywood's brightest stars in the 1950s through critically-lauded performances in A Place in the Sun, From Here to Eternity and The Young Lions.

The actor's career spiralled as his descent into substance abuse worsened in the wake of a 1956 car crash that caused partial facial paralysis.

Clift tragically died from a heart attack at the age...

Matt Bomer confirmed to take lead in Monty Clift, while candidates canvassed to play Jd Salinger in new film about the author

Magic Mike star Matt Bomer is to play Hollywood icon Montgomery Clift, his representatives have confirmed.

Clift was one of the Us film industry's biggest stars in the late 1940s and 50s. The recipient of four Academy Award nominations, Clift was an acclaimed method actor and a sex symbol whose later career was plagued by misfortune and ill-health.

The new film is currently titled simply Monty Clift. Newcomer Larry Moss will direct a script by actor-turned-screenwriter Christopher Lovick, aiming to shoot next year for a 2015 release date.

Clift starred in classics such as 1951's A Place in the Sun and 1953's From Here to Eternity, but also turned down roles in Sunset Boulevard and East of Eden, which brought fame to William Holden and James Dean respectively. His...

Matt Bomer Becomes Monty Clift In A New Biopic
Celebrity biopics are difficult to do right – they have to have the right casting, the right director; they have to avoid the usual cliches of rise, fall and redemption. They typically either represent their subjects as brilliant and luminous, or dark and desperate, but rarely do they manage to capture the complexity of a real human being. We can hope that the upcoming biopic of Montgomery Clift, entitled Monty Clift according to IMDb, will do justice to its difficult subject. Matt Bomer of White Collar fame has agreed to take on the role of the tragic star.

Monty Clift will not tell the full story about the actor, but rather focus on his burgeoning relationship with Elizabeth Taylor after they met on the set of A Place In The Sun. Clift and Taylor would remain close friends until his death at the age of 45, working on two more films together: Suddenly,...

Act Welcomes Former NFL Star Bo Eason in Runt Of The Litter 9/18-10/24
A father's expectations. A son's dream. A brother's rivalry.

Runt of the Litter is the acclaimed, semi-autobiographical one-man show (soon to be a major motion picture) chronicles volatile family dynamics as well as triumph despite great odds. Always considered too small to play football, former Houston Oiler Bo Eason developed-then never deviated from-a 20-year-plan to go pro. But his plan didn't include a more talented older brother whose success would forever eclipse his own.

Written and performed by Bo Eason and directed by Larry Moss, Runt of the Litter opens in the final hour of Jack Henry's lifelong dream, with only one thing that stands in his way: his brother. The play closely examines what happens to two brothers in a family of overachievers: when their parents assure their oldest son that he is the one destined for football superstardom, and they tell their youngest son he is too small to compete.
