The day’s finally arrived for Red Barrels’ return to the Outlast series with The Outlast Trials, which has launched today into Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store. To mark the occasion, we have the customary launch trailer.
A brand new take on the acclaimed survival horror series, The Outlast Trials is set in the same terrifying universe as the previous titles, only this time you can choose to play on your own or with friends in a team of up to four people.
Set in the height of the Cold War era, players take on the role of test subjects abducted by the shadowy Murkoff Corporation. Imprisoned in a secret Murkoff facility, players will be thrust into a series of physical and mental ordeals, tormented by iconic characters, and challenged alone or in teams to survive with their sanity intact.

After last October’s closed beta, you’re probably wondering just when Red Barrels was going to update us on The Outlast Trials. Well, not only will The Outlast Trials be headed to Early Access on Steam and the Epic Games Store., but it’ll be happening this Spring on May 18.
In addition to the Early Access release date, Red Barrels also revealed the closed beta stats for The Outlast Trials. Running from October 28 to November 1, the beta saw almost 1 million players sign up, with those who got access putting in a total of 35 years of play time.
“The Closed Beta was just a taste of what’s to come in The Outlast Trials,” said Philippe Morin, Co-Founder of Red Barrels. “Our first round of willing participants to take part in the trials provided us with some insightful feedback and very interesting data, which we have used to improve the experience.

Above: Mondo poster for The Graduate (Mike Nichols, USA, 1967); artist: Rory Kurtz; lettering: Jay Shaw.On my daily movie poster Tumblr I don’t make a habit of posting fan art or art prints—call them what you will—because I’m most interested in the intersection of commerce and art that is the theatrical movie poster. But I make an exception when something stands out, and nothing stood out last year quite like Rory Kurtz’s beautiful, elegant and unexpected Mondo illustration for The Graduate, which quite rightly racked up over 200 more likes than even its nearest competitor. But its nearest competitor was fan art too: a brilliant poster for Badlands by the insanely talented Adam Juresko, whose art poster for In the Mood for Love (featured in my Maggie Cheung article) was also in the top four. What makes art posters easy to like—beyond their extraordinary artistry...

1. CosmosAdam Maida’s silent scream for Andrzej Zulawski’s swansong Cosmos is a poster that cries out to be noticed. Channeling the starkest of Polish poster design—think Mieczyslaw Wasilewski or Andrzej Pagowski—Maida’s design is as deceptively crude as it is beautifully executed. I love everything about this poster, down to its hand-lettering, that tiny hanged bird and the even tinier—nice if you can get away with it—billing block. Maida’s witty, diagrammatic work has already graced Criterion covers for Nagisa Oshima’s Death by Hanging, John Frankenheimer’s The Manchurian Candidate, and Costa-Gavras’s The Confession and State of Siege, but it is his eye-catching black-and-white editorial illustration/montages for the New York Times that this most reminds me of. You can see more of his work here.2. The HandmaidenTrees and a hanging also feature heavily in my second favorite poster of the year: an...

Developer Red Barrels has no intention of introducing Vr support to 2017 horror sequel Outlast 2 – not at launch, at least.
Word comes by way of PlayStation LifeStyle, where President Philippe Morin noted that because Outlast 2 wasn’t designed from the ground up to be playable in virtual reality – be that via Htc Vive, the Oculus Rift or PlayStation Vr – Red Barrels is focusing solely on the core experience.
A first-person horror title though it may be, and therefore a fine candidate to be overhauled into a nerve-shredding virtual reality experience, Morin points out that at 20 people, Red Barrels is relatively small development team. Couple this with the studio’s recent decision to delay Outlast 2 in the name of polish and it’s clear the prospect of Vr support is very much on the back-burner.
Per Psls:
No, it won’t be. I think that if you want to make a really effective and enjoyable Vr game,...

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
To celebrate the game's tenth anniversary, Rockstar Games has revamped and re-released the classic "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" which is now available on Xbox Live with an anniversary day pricing of just under $4.
The new version sports 720p resolution, enhanced draw distance, achievement support and eleven secret achievements. Sadly it doesn't boast enhanced graphics of any other kind beyond the resolution bump. [Source: Polygon]
Outlast 2
Montreal-based developer Red Barrels has confirmed that they are working on a sequel to their debut horror game title "Outlast". Designer and co-founder Philippe Morin tells Bloody Disgusting that the game will take place in the same world as "Outlast," but in a very different part of it:
"The game will be a survival horror experience and it will take place in the same universe as Outlast, but it will have different characters and a different setting. We might go back...

For my money Outlast is the single best pure horror experience to ever be fashioned in video game form. The game is grim, ghastly, and filled with more perverse sights than a Clive Barker-inspired fever dream. Now, Finally, Xbox One owners can experience the terror!
Last night while browsing the Xbox game store, I found the Outlast "Whistleblower" Dlc sitting in the games "Add On" section. There was no sign of the main game... that is, until this morning!
That's right, kids! You can score yourself Outlast and the "Whistleblower" Dlc right now for $19.99 and $8.99, respectively. Believe me when I tell you it's worth every single penny and then some!
“We hope everyone who downloads Outlast over the coming weeks has a great time exploring the world we’ve built and unraveling the story of Mount Massive Asylum,” said Game Designer and Red Barrels Co-founder Philippe Morin. “I also...

We all know that our gaming habit can become expensive, we all want the latest hardware and games, however we are still in the middle of an economic crisis and the majority of the average gamers have to watch what they spend.
It was with this in mind that I have decided to take a look at some of the games that will be free to play on the PS4, as personally I will not have access to a large gaming budget when the PS4 launches in November. I have a wife and family to feed first and foremost and my gaming budget is limited, yet I always find enough money for more booze when required!
Firstly, I think it is only sensible to set out what my guidelines are for being classed as free. I will be getting Ps+ like the majority of gamers at the launch of the...

Philippe Morin, from Red Barrels, recently posted on the PlayStation Blog about how the team is aiming to scare fans out of their minds in the upcoming survival-horror title Outlast, which is now set to arrive on the PlayStation 4.
Players assume the role of a journalist with nothing to defend yourself with except your camera, wits, and the desire to not have your head ripped from your body. The team at Red Barrels understands that by making characters feel powerless there is automatically a sense of fear that manifests itself from uncertainty. The game has been designed to elevate your fear by capitalizing on your vulnerability but granting you the necessary skills to run for your life.
“The best games make you feel something, some type of emotion that sticks with you after you’re done playing. And fear is one of the most powerful emotions we can have as human beings.

Outlast will arrive later this year for PC and has proved to be the scariest game yet at this year's Pax East. Players tried out the demo at Pax to find that this game is so terrifying that you may throw down the controller and run off screaming!
Why is the game so scary? Well, the developers have teamed up with researchers to contribute real-world data on mental illness and how players will experience terror through an authentic horror experience in Outlast. Well as Pax East proved, people are scared...very scared when it comes to Outlast. Even the most hardcore journalists stated that they may not play the game again, because it was just too damn terrifying!
From the Press Release

The "indirect" PC/Mac sequel gets a new trailer and reminds us that nothing is so unsettling as the sound of a child's voice and the squeal of pigs.
A Machine For Pigs is a followup to the acclaimed 2011 game Amnesia: The Dark Descent, this time a collaboration between original developer Frictional Games with an assist from the indie team behind Dear Esther, thechineseroom. Precisely how it's an indirect sequel is unclear, but it sounds like it'll be mining some of the same horror territory as the original without directly calling on that game.
From the official synopsis:
The year is 1899. Wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus has returned home from a disastrous expedition to Mexico, which has ended in tragedy. Wracked by fever, haunted by dreams of a dark machine, he recovers consciousness in his own bed, with no idea of how much time has passed since his last memory. As he struggles to his feet,...

Let's talk a little about horror--particularly first-person horror.
Outlast is the first project from Red Barrels, the Montreal-based studio made up of Ubisoft vets. The trailer for the game made its debut last week via a teaser trailer, and today, they'll be releasing a full trailer for the survival horror project set inside of a very haunted asylum. I spoke with designer Philippe Morin, who's credits include Assassin's Creed, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune about the genesis of Outlast and getting survival horror right in an era where most games in the genre have traded in frantic gun battles for sustained scares.
First, a little history: Red Barrels got its start back in 2011, Morin and and a handful of Ubisoft vets left that company. Casting about for their first project, Morin says they started making a list of the kinds of games they wanted...
