Trivia

  • His last major TV appearance was in 1986 on "Saturday Night's Main Event," when he was scheduled to wrestle the Iron Sheik. That match never took place; instead, Roddy Piper (who had recently turned good) ordered Morales out of the ring and immediately clobbered the Iron Sheik in an impromptu match (which Piper, of course, won).
  • Most memorable match was vs. fellow fan favorite Bruno Sammartino. Their 75-minute match, held Sept. 30, 1972 at Shea's Stadium in New York, was the result of a rift the two had a couple of months earlier (thanks to heels Mr. Fuji and Professor Toru Tanaka). The match, laden with clean wrestling throughout, ended in a curfew draw.
  • While very popular with Latino and Hispanic wrestling fans, some observers believe he never was truly able to escape Bruno Sammartino's shadow.
  • Is the #2 longest single reigning WWF Intercontinental Champion of all time (just after the Honky Tonk Man). His second reign as champ lasted 13 months, 29 days.
  • After winning the Tag Team Title with Bob Backlund, they gave it up because Backluind, was already a World Champion at the time.
