"Mad Max: Fury Road" is one of the best movies of all time — according to /Film — a masterpiece of action cinema and a masterclass in visual storytelling. It is also a bit of a live-action cartoon. Like the best live-action directors, George Miller pulls inspiration from "Looney Tunes" as much as he does live-action movies in making his post-apocalyptic epic, with a sense of logic, physics, pacing, and fun that feels more outlandish than grounded.
But before the movie came out and became a big hit and an Oscar winner, it went through development hell for literal decades, only to go through actual hell during filming. Development took so long and suffered so many setbacks that Miller looked at alternatives to "Fury Road," including telling a completely different story in animated form. Indeed, we know that in 2009 — between two "Happy Feet" movies — Miller considered making an R-rated 3D "Mad Max" anime instead,...

Visionary filmmaker George Miller returns to his gasoline-fueled wasteland fantasy action universe this summer “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” The latest installment of his post-apocalypse saga is a prequel centering on a young Furiosa (this time played by Anya Taylor-Joy instead of Charlize Theron), but it apparently almost went in a totally different direction, using a totally different medium
In a new interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), producer Doug Mitchell recently revealed how the prequel came about and how it was actually ready 15 years ago story-wise, with the original intention of becoming an anime project, not the live-action thriller that arrives in May.

As far as iconic franchises go, George Miller’s Mad Max films are right up there among Hollywood’s favorite film series. Similar to his namesake George Lucas and his brainchild Star Wars, Miller created the dystopian action series back in 1979 with Mel Gibson, which was followed by three successful sequels in the 80s.

Now, the Lorenzo’s Oil director has roped in one of Hollywood’s big draws Anya Taylor-Joy along with Chris Hemsworth for the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Interestingly, this film has been in the making for many years , and was almost developed into an anime feature.

In a candid interview with Total Film, producer Doug Mitchell disclosed an interesting titbit about the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road prequel movie, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
In the interview, Mitchell revealed that the groundwork for Furiosa‘s narrative was laid 15 years ago. The script was even completed before the critically-acclaimed Fury Road.
But here’s the real kicker: the initial vision for Furiosa was wildly different. Originally titled The Peach, it was planned as an anime film to be directed by Mahiro Maeda, known for his contributions in a number of anime films, from Neon Genesis Evangelion to Studio Ghibli films such as Porco Rosso and Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
However, the trajectory of Furiosa took a surprising turn, pivoting from its anime origins to emerge as a live-action film.

Anya Taylor-Joy’s acting career has never flourished so much like this year — after making a surprising appearance in Denis Villeneuve’s highest-grossing blockbuster Dune: Part 2, the actress is now heading to the Cannes Film Festival for a big premiere of her brand new adventure film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
While Taylor-Joy yet has to prove her deserved takeover of the role that in all senses belonged to Charlize Theron, new details about the upcoming movie keep emerging — and, as it turns out, Furiosa features a vital scene that took more than two months to shoot.
Nothing has been said about specific details of the scene, but the movie’s producer Doug Mitchell has recently revealed that the 15-minute-long sequence required 78 days of shooting and “close to 200 stunt people working on it daily.”

Mad Max prequel Furiosa contains a 15 minute-long action scene that was so complex, it took 78 days to shoot, it’s been revealed.
The production of Furiosa doesn’t appear to have been quite as arduous as Mad Max: Fury Road's, but that doesn’t mean director George Miller has reigned in his appetite for big, complex action sequences.
In fact, producer Doug Mitchell has teased that the upcoming Mad Max prequel – full title Furiosa: A Mad Max Story – contains a 15-minute vehicular action scene that took 78 days to shoot and took in 200 stunt performers.
It’s a production detail revealed in the latest issue of Total Film, in which it was revealed that the action scene was dubbed on-set as “Stairway To Nowhere.”
If Furiosa follows the usual storytelling structure, it sounds as though the set-piece will land in the middle of the upcoming film which stars Anya Taylor-Joy...

George Miller has pushed the “Mad Max” franchise to new levels of spectacle with each film, but the Australian might have topped himself with an action sequence in the upcoming “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.”
Miller’s new “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel, which is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month, stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of the titular character made famous by Charlize Theron. The film is based on the extensive backstory about Furiosa that Miller created to help his “Fury Road” cast and crew members immerse themselves in the film’s world.
While the massive success of “Fury Road” would be a hard act for any filmmaker to follow, Miller’s collaborators seem convinced that he found a way to match the scale of his Oscar-winning 2015 film. In a new feature in Total Film magazine, Miller’s producing partner Doug Mitchell revealed...

Apparently, there’s a 15-minute scene in “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” that took more than 75 days to film and hundreds of stunt people to pull off.
“[‘Furiosa’] has one 15-minute sequence which took us 78 days to shoot” producer Doug Mitchell revealed in an interview with Total Film about the film, which is set to land in theaters on May 24. The production named the sequence “Stairway to Nowhere.”
“George [Miller] and I would have these big conversations about why this particular set-piece was so long,” actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays a younger version of Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa in the film, agreed. The short scene not only took a hefty amount of days to shoot, it also required over 200 stunt people.
Taylor-Joy said the scene provides viewers with a detailed and visual explanation of how talented, knowledgeable and clever Furiosa is in battle-mode.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a symphony of well-choreographed, thrilling action, but Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will hopefully give it a run for its money. I have faith that director George Miller will deliver the action goods, but if you need a tease, Miller’s producing partner Doug Mitchell told Total Film that Furiosa has a 15-minute action sequence, which took almost three months to shoot.
Mitchel teased that Furiosa “has one 15-minute sequence which took us 78 days to shoot,” with nearly 200 stunt people working on it each and every day. The sequence was known as Stairway to Nowhere during production and is said to mark a turning point for Furiosa.
Furiosa star Anya Taylor-Joy added, “George and I would have these big conversations about why this particular set-piece was so long. It’s because you see an accumulation of skills over the course of a battle, and that...

“Mad Max” fans know that topping “Fury Road” is most likely an impossible task, but it sounds like the upcoming prequel “Furiosa” has a few action-packed tricks up its sleeve to deliver the goods. Speaking to Total Film magazine, director George Miller’s longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell let it slip that “Furiosa” contains “one 15-minute sequence which took us 78 days to shoot” and required 200 stunt people on set daily. The code name for the sequence during production was “Stairway to Nowhere.”
“George and I would have these big conversations about why this particular set-piece was so long,” leading star Anya Taylor-Joy told the publication. “It’s because you see an accumulation of skills over the course of a battle, and that’s very important for understanding how resourceful Furiosa is, but also her grit. It’s the longest sequence any of us have ever shot. On the day we finished,...

Turns out, Anya Taylor-Joy has a shaved head in “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel “Furiosa.”
The “Queen’s Gambit” star recently told Empire magazine that director George Miller told her to not shave her head for the role; however, in the new trailer, a buzzed cut is boasted by the star, mirroring Charlize Theron’s look as Furiosa for “Fury Road.” Taylor-Joy is almost certainly sporting a wig in the film; we sure haven’t seen her growing back long locks in the time since.
“I feel very lucky that, from the second I read the script, I just knew this person. I felt so fiercely protective over Furiosa, and fiercely protective of her interests,” Taylor-Joy said of taking over the character from Theron. She also told IndieWire that “Furiosa” was the “dirtiest and the bloodiest” she’s ever been onscreen.

After hitting the Cannes Film Festival with “Three Thousand Years of Longing” in 2022, George Miller is eyeing a splashy Croisette comeback with “Furiosa,” his post-apocalyptic “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel movie. The Warner Bros. tentpole casts Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of Imperator Furiosa, the action heroine made famous by Charlize Theron in “Fury Road.” Miller is producing “Furiosa” along with his longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell. The prequel also stars Chris Hemsworth in the villain role.
Cannes proved to be a successful launching pad for “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which debuted out of competition at the festival in 2015 and was released in theaters shortly after, grossing $374 million worldwide. The movie also went on to be nominated for 10 Oscars, including best picture and best director, and it won six awards.

Idris Elba wasn’t longing for any Dijinn prep work ahead of “Three Thousand Years of Longing.”
George Miller’s first film since 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” is based on the 1994 short story “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye” by A.S. Byatt. Elba portrays a Dijinn who offers a scholar (Tilda Swinton) three wishes in exchange for his freedom. Their conversation, unfolding in a hotel room in Istanbul, leads to decades-spanning, globe-trotting consequences neither expected. The film premiered at Cannes and opens in theaters August 26.
Director Miller penned the script along with daughter Augusta Gore, and that proved to be enough source material for Elba without needing the full history of the tale.
“I actually didn’t read the novella — I didn’t want to be tainted or influenced by it,” Elba explained to Entertainment Weekly. “Any literature about djinn was off the table for me. I didn...

Director George Miller has said that the events in his Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa play out over a period of fifteen years – and now we know that the passage of time is going to be obvious when we’re looking at Dementus, the character played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor). While a picture taken of Hemsworth on set last month showed him sporting the red hair of a younger Dementus, more recent Furiosa set pics show Hemsworth playing a Dementus who has gone gray. You can see both versions of Dementus in the embeds below – and if I hadn’t been told that was Hemsworth in the pictures, I wouldn’t even have recognized him.

Principal photography is underway on Academy Award-winning filmmaker George Miller’s “Furiosa,” the much-anticipated return to the iconic dystopian world he created more than 30 years ago with the seminal “Mad Max” films, this time with an original new standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of the powerhouse character from the multiple Oscar-winning global smash “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
The new feature is being produced by Miller’s own Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner, together with the filmmaker’s “Fury Road” partners Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. Anya Taylor-Joy stars in the title role, alongside Chris Hemsworth and Tom Burke.
As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance,...

Cannes likes George Miller, and he likes Cannes. It’s where he debuted “Mad Max: Fury Road” in 2015, and made his third Competition jury appearance the following year, this time as its president. Now his latest film, “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” has an out-of-competition slot with an epic and gorgeously wrought fairy-tale romance between a Djinn eager for freedom (Idris Elba) and a successful but lonely academic who studies storytelling. He tells her a bang of a tale; she makes wishes. They negotiate the terms in an Istanbul hotel room. Is love a wish fulfilled?
For all its epic scope, it’s a smaller-scale drama dominated by dialogue and reviews are mixed. That’s unsurprising; this movie is like nothing you have seen, and critics don’t know what to make of it. Although crammed with ingenious magical creatures and VFX, it’s not an action movie. Its two 50-ish leads are romantic,...

George Miller told press today in Cannes that his new film 3000 Years of Longing is a fantasy story that is “open to interpretation.”
Five years after Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller has brought a very different kind of film to Cannes, where he enjoyed a standing ovation following the screening last night on the Croisette.
Adapted from a 1994 As Byatt novella, Three Thousand Years of Longing stars Tilda Swinton as narratology professor Alithea who encounters a genie – the Djinn, played by a pointy-eared Idris Elba. The film flips between their conversation in the hotel room and the Djinn’s previous adventures, while he asks her to come up with wishes he can grant.
Miller told the packed press room: “Most stories we tell are allegorical. They’re open to interpretation, depending on who’s watching them. Fantasy stories lend themselves to dealing with much more complex things than, say, a documentary.

Seven years after the critically acclaimed “Mad Max: Fury Road,” George Miller is back in the director’s chair for the epic romance film “Three Thousand Years of Longing.”
Based on the 1994 short story “The Djinn in the Nightingale’s Eye” by English writer A. S. Byatt, “Three Thousand Years of Longing” stars Tilda Swinton as Alithea, a brilliant scholar who encounters a Djinn (Idris Elba) imprisoned in an urn. Over the course of a long conversation in a hotel room in Istanbul, the Djinn strikes a deal with Alithea to grant her three wishes if she helps him gain his freedom. Alithea’s wishes results in the two hopping decades through time, all the while developing unexpected feelings for each other.
“Three Thousand Years of Longing” will make its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday. Miller wrote the script with August Gore and produces the film with Doug Mitchell.

Charlize Theron felt so threatened by Mad Max co-star Tom Hardy that she asked for a female producer as protection. Yet the industry still relies on film sets being lawless bubbles where you question macho posturing at your peril

Exclusive: Tom Burke (Mank) has joined Warner Bros and George Miller’s Furiosa, the spinoff to Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Burke replaces Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who had to part ways with the project due to a scheduling conflict.
It is unknown the exact project Abdul-Mateen is exiting over, but sources say it is a secret passion project he had been developing for some time, and production recently moved up on it, which ultimately led him to leaving Furiosa.
Burke joins Anya Taylor-Joy, who will star in the titular role, along with Chris Hemsworth. The stand-alone movie, which will reveal the origins of Furiosa, has Miller directing, co-writing and producing with his longtime Oscar-nominated producing partner Doug Mitchell. Miller’s Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner will produce.
Mad Max: Fury Road made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 and grossed $375.2 million at the global box office.

The Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Mad Max spinoff Furiosa will now open on May 24, 2024 instead of June 23, 2023, Warners has just announced.
Meanwhile New Line’s Stephen King adaptation Salem’s Lot will open in the post Labor Day frame of Sept. 9, 2022 next year. That has been a rich period at the box office for Warner Bros and New Line horror fare, however, this year with James Wan’s Malignant on HBO Max, and up against Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ second weekend, that genre movie isn’t looking so strong.
Salem’s Lot is directed and adapted by Gary Dauberman. Producers are Roy Lee, Wan, Michael Clear and Mark Wolper. Alfre Woodard, Lewis Pullman, Makenzie, Leigh, Bill Camp, Spencer Treat Clark and William Sadler star in the small town vampire movie.
George Miller’s Furiosa will be Australia’s biggest ever, and is prepping for a South Wales shoot next year.

“Furiosa,â€. the Anya Taylor-Joy-starring prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Roadâ€. is to receive financial incentives from federal and state governments, ensuring that production will take place in Australia. The George Miller-directed picture will shoot from June.
“The support of the Federal and New South Wales Governments were pivotal. They made it possible for the film to be greenlit, shot in Australia and for the production to be based in our home state,â€. Miller said in a statement on Monday.
“This is great news for New South Wales,â€. said state premier Glady Berejiklian in the same statement “It is expected to become the biggest film ever to be made in Australia.â€.
Despite a currency that is strengthening against the U.S. dollar, Australia is already enjoying a post-covid film and TV production boom, helped by aggressive government financing schemes, a disease that is largely in abeyance.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced theatrical release dates for three big event movies tonight — and their intention is that they’re going straight to the big screen, not HBO Max and theaters. Those three are the George Miller Max Max prequel Furiosa on June 23, 2023, Dave Green’s animated hybrid Coyote vs. Acme on July 21, 2023 and The Color Purple musical feature on Dec. 20, 2023. The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, and the intent is to launch the trio as global theatrical releases (not timed with a simultaneous HBO drop; which is the intent for their 2021 theatrical release).

Warner Bros. has announced release dates for three of its upcoming films: George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” prequel, titled “Furiosa”; a musical adaptation of “The Color Purple”; and the family film “Coyote vs. Acme.” All three films will debut in theaters in 2023.
“Furiosa,” starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role, has been set for June 23. The live-action/ animation hybrid “Coyote vs. Acme” is debuting on July 21 and “The Color Purple” will release around the holidays on Dec. 20.
Earlier in December, Warner Bros. shared plans to premiere its entire 2021 slate — including “The Matrix 4,” “Dune” and “The Suicide Squad” — simultaneously on the company’s streaming service HBO Max and in movie theaters. The studio called the unprecedented release strategy, one that drew criticism from all corners of Hollywood, a “unique one-year” model in response to the pandemic. Wednesday’s announcement suggests that Warner Bros. intends to continue its commitment to theatrical releases.

George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” follow-up “Thousand Years of Longing” is finally in production in Australia, well over two years after the project was first announced. Deadline confirms Miller is 20 days into the movie’s 62-day film shoot. Cast and crew will break for the holidays later this month and reconvene in early 2021 to finish production by spring. Miller is reportedly aiming to have the film finished by September 2021. As previously reported, MGM is on board as the film’s U.S. distributor and the cast is led by Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.
While plot details for “Thousand Years of Longing” remain under wraps, “Fury Road” fans will be excited to learn that Miller has gotten nearly all of the Oscar-winning “Mad Max” craft team back together for his new movie. Exclusive: More than two years after it was announced and after a couple of delays, George Miller’s anticipated fantasy-romance-drama Three Thousand Years Of Longing is now underway in Australia, we can reveal.
The Sydney-based production, which is observing numerous on-set Covid safety protocols, is in fact 20 days into its 62-day shoot. The team will break up over Christmas and reconvene early next year before wrapping in the early spring for a planned September 2021 delivery.
Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba are starring in Miller’s latest, whose plot details are being kept under wraps. The visionary filmmaker previously described the project to us as an “anti-Mad Max” with plenty of interiors and dialogue but also punctuated with action scenes.
The estimated $60M budget is an indication that this is far from your average two-hander, however. Producer Doug Mitchell, Miller’s long-time producing partner, described the Sydney sets to us today...
