In a move to try and ensure that it doesn’t wind up in the crosshairs of the Trump administration’s campaign against diversity, equity and inclusion programs, Disney appears to be rolling back some of its Dei efforts.
The entertainment giant, in its latest filing to regulators, scrubbed references to the “Reimagine Tomorrow” initiative, which launched in 2021 with the purpose of amplifying underrepresented voices. It also didn’t mention employee development programs and fellowships for underrepresented talent, instead noting an existing initiative intended to hire military veterans.
The pivot was outlined in a note to employees sent Tuesday from chief human resources officer Sonia Coleman. It includes a new “talent strategy” factor to executive compensation planning that assesses how leaders “uphold our company values, incorporate different perspectives to drive business success, cultivate an environment where all employees can thrive, and sustain a robust pipeline to ensure long-term organizational strength.

In 2000, I was stationed in Florida and away from my home state of New Jersey. I sent in my mail-in ballot and voted for Al Gore, believing I was participating in a cornerstone of democracy. However, as the recount chaos unfolded — with hanging chads, legal battles, and a controversial Supreme Court decision — I was left wondering if my vote had even been counted. I deployed soon after, following 9/11, pushing those concerns aside. But the lessons from that election never left me. Voting rights, especially for minority blocs, are fragile and must be fiercely protected.

With a week to go until Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her closing message at a massive rally of 75,000 people gathered at the Ellipse in Washington, D.C.
With the White House lit up behind her, Harris urged the fired up crowd and Americans watching to embrace a “new generation of leadership,” while calling for unity among the parties. “We like a good debate,” she said. “And the fact that someone disagrees with us does not make them the enemy within. They are family, neighbors, classmates, coworkers. They are fellow Americans,...

Midtown Manhattan is not usually a place to find someone wearing a Make America Great Again hat. Donald Trump lost the New York City borough by nearly 75 points in 2020, and by even more than that four years earlier. But on Sunday, ahead of Trump’s mega-rally at Madison Square Garden, the area was overrun with red apparel and a seemingly unlimited variety of memes glorifying the former president and denigrating his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris.

Donald Trump’s rally today at Madison Square Garden was marked by an opening lineup of speakers who joked about Puerto Rico being a “floating pile of garbage,” ranted about “f—ing illegals” and declared that Kamala Harris was the “antichrist.”
The extreme rhetoric is often a feature at Trump events, but in a neck-and-neck presidential race, when campaigns have traditionally tried to display messages of unity in the final days before an election, the rally stoked racial division and highlighted stereotypes.
Tony Hinchcliffe, a comedian, said of Latinos: “they love making babies. They do. They do. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside, just like they did to our country.”
He also said, “There is literally a floating pile of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico.” He also joked about Black people carving watermelons for Halloween.

It was a troubling time in recent history. In early 2017, just after taking office, the new administration put a cruel plan into action. They would take children away from their parents at the southern border. The goal was to discourage others from coming to seek a better life. But in reality it caused immense suffering.
Veteran filmmaker Errol Morris wanted to shed light on this painful period. His film “Separated” captures the full story through meticulous research. It’s based on award-winning journalist Jacob Soboroff’s book, which uncovered what really happened. Both Morris and Soboroff interview those involved, from officials who helped enact the plan to those who fought against it. We also hear archival recordings showing the real impact on families.
Morris guides us through step by step. We learn how the idea formed and was carried out. Government agencies meant to help ended up being used to cause harm instead.

Once an outsider to the system, now as influential a doc maker as the industry has, Errol Morris has dedicated his career to drawing our attention to subjects — be they individuals or issues — we might otherwise overlook. Sometimes they are frivolous and fringy, like a Florida pet cemetery (“Gates of Heaven”) or a drug-induced defenestration (“Wormwood”). But the ones that really matter force us to confront truths we may be actively trying to avoid, such as euthanasia (“Mr. Death”) or the use of torture at Abu Ghraib prison (“Standard Operating Procedure”).
“Separated” finds Morris back in “The Fog of War” mode: angry, engaged and determined to expose an injustice too monumental to be ignored — despite so many Americans’ efforts to do just that. Adapted from NBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff’s book of the same name, the blood-boiling doc offers a damning analysis of how the Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy...

Donald Trump called into Fox & Friends this morning, continuing to insist that he won Tuesday’s presidential debate against Kamala Harris yet also that the ABC News event was unfair and “three against one.”
That was a reference to David Muir and Linsey Davis, who in co-moderating also did fact-checks of some of the former president’s wildest claims.
The former president was intent on spinning his performance at the debate, even though he was repeatedly baited by Harris, often sounded angry and went back to his unfounded claim that he won the 2020 election.
The effort to control the narrative started just minutes after the event ended, when both campaigns dispatched their armies of surrogates to the spin room, the Olympic-sized pool area of blue carpet in the Philadelphia Convention Center. The spin room spectacle is an endurance test for campaign talking heads to stick the talking points in the...

Philadelphia — The clearest sign that Kamala Harris’ campaign thought she won the ABC presidential debate was the fact that her elated surrogates in the post-debate spin room were gloating about “finally landing a punch on Donald Trump” — and floating the possibility of a rematch.
The clearest sign Trump knew he lost was the fact that Trump himself appeared in the spin room to defend his debate performance on Tuesday night.

Back in April, JoBlo’s own Kier Gomes – who hosts the JoBlo Originals Live Stream, Friday Night Flicks, on our JoBlo Originals channel – put together an episode of the Deconstructing series that took a look at the 1987 classic The Stepfather. A couple of months ago, we shared the news that Kier also contributed an audio commentary to the new 4K and Blu-ray release of The Stepfather from Scream Factory – and today happens to be the release date for that 4K and Blu-ray! Copies are available at This Link.
Directed by Joseph Ruben from a screenplay by popular crime novelist Donald E. Westlake (who crafted the story with

Midway through “Separated,” celebrated documentarian Errol Morris’ new film about the Trump Administration’s policy of splitting up parents and children attempting to enter the U.S. via the southern border, ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt makes a key point when he talks about his legal challenge to the policy. The strategy, Gelernt tells Morris, was to stay away from inflammatory words like abuse and torture, however accurate they may have been.
“This is the worst thing I have ever seen in the immigration field,” says Gelernt. “It was better to just tell the stories of those children and let the facts speak for themselves.”
The strategy worked in the courtroom, but Morris himself doesn’t make use of it in “Separated,” which had its world premiere on Thursday at the Venice International Film Festival.

Accepting his party’s nomination for president for a third time, Donald Trump addressed the Republican National Convention in July, returning to a familiar theme.
“We… have an illegal immigration crisis, and it’s taking place right now, as we sit here in this beautiful arena,” he told delegates. “It’s a massive invasion at our southern border that has spread misery, crime, poverty, disease and destruction to communities all across our land. Nobody’s ever seen anything like it.”

If you go back to the earliest days of his career — Gates of Heaven and Vernon, Florida — Errol Morris’ great gift appeared to be giving voices to people on the margins of American society.
Morris’ interests have shifted or evolved somewhat since then. Sometimes he’s issue-driven and sometimes he’s determined to get under the skin of famous and notorious figures. There isn’t always a simmering rage driving his filmmaking — his last outing, The Pigeon Tunnel, was pretty close to hero worship. But it’s become more common than the curious empathy that fueled his first works.
The prolific director’s fury is at a full boil in his NBC News documentary Separated, which is now getting a fall festival showcase. Examining the border policy of family separations, Morris rips into the xenophobes who stealthily crafted it, the unqualified bureaucrats who set it in motion and the paranoid...

A federal judge has halted the Missouri attorney general’s investigation of the progressive watchdog group Media Matters for America over its report last year that major sponsors’ advertisements were appearing next to extremist content on Elon Musk’s X.com.
As advertisers left the platform, Musk sued Media Matters, while Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey served civil investigative demands on the watchdog group. Media Matters sued to block the investigation, citing the First Amendment.
In granting a preliminary injunction, U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta wrote that “Missouri’s interest in enforcing its consumer protection laws must give way when a state actor uses them to retaliate against a media organization for protected speech.” Bailey also sought a civil penalty against the group.
“The court does not discard lightly the presumption of regularity generally afforded to
prosecutorial decision-making,” the judge wrote, as he cited court precedents.

Donald Trump has plenty of plans for his second term, even if he’s publicly pretending he doesn’t know anything about them.

The Dei dominoes started falling — or at least wobbling — last summer. There was a Supreme Court ruling all but gutting affirmative action on college campuses. In Hollywood, there was the mass exodus of diversity officers — at Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, Netflix and the Motion Picture Academy. Meanwhile, conservative activists launched a barrage of anti-dei lawsuits with corporations in the crosshairs, like the one filed in March against CBS and Paramount by former (and possibly future) Trump aide Stephen Miller on behalf of a white Seal Team writer who was allegedly denied advancement because of Dei policies.
Philanthropic work so far has remained largely unscathed by the Dei battles, but that may soon change. Disney’s efforts to boost diversity are under attack ahead of a key shareholder vote to elect its board that will shape the direction of the company.
Stephen Miller’s America First Legal foundation, in a letter sent to Disney’s top brass March 27, claims that initiatives to boost diversity and inclusion violate civil rights laws and have tanked the entertainment giant’s value. (Year-to-date, Disney’s stock has risen more than 30 percent.)
The group asks for the appointment of an independent monitor to investigate the issue, inspection of internal records and distribution of the missive to all shareholders in what appears to be a bid to undermine chief executive Bob Iger in a proxy fight against Nelson Peltz.

Donald Trump‘s late mother-in-law, Amalija Knavs, entered the United States under an immigration program that her son-in-law had scrapped.
On August 6, 2018, Melania Trump‘s Slovenia-born parents, Viktor Knavs and Amalija, were sworn in as U.S. citizens at a ceremony in New York City.
Their attorney, Michael Wildes, confirmed in February 2018 that the couple holds green cards and have been living in America for several years.
Trump criticized family-based immigration laws for a long time, calling such “chain migration” programs harmful to America because they could lead to terrorism and other types of crime.
The news about Melania’s parents also emerged as Trump has campaigned to limit legal immigrants’ access to citizenship and green cards, especially for migrants who benefited from government assistance like health insurance.

Aspiring television writer Brian Beneker, whose credits as a script coordinator go back more than 20 years, isn’t the only straight white male to feel that he was being shut out of a writing job because of diversity initiatives. But so far he appears to be the only one willing to seek out Stephen Miller’s America First Legal foundation, associating himself with a Trump world figure who is particularly loathed by progressives.
With his lawsuit against CBS and Paramount alleging that he faced discrimination when he did not get a staff writing job on the CBS military drama Seal Team, Beneker has become a vehicle through which Miller is waging his war on diversity and inclusion efforts in the entertainment industry. In doing so, Beneker has defined himself in a way that is likely to stick. Reached by phone, he declined to comment, as did his attorneys.

A lawsuit filed by a Seal Team script coordinator and freelancer who claims he was denied a writing position because he’s a straight white guy has already struck a chord with fellow scribes.

The Dei wars raging in Red State America have made their long-expected arrival in Hollywood. CBS Studios and its parent Paramount have been sued for allegedly carrying diversity quotas that discriminate against straight white men in what may be the opening legal salvo against efforts to boost diversity and inclusion in Hollywood in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision knocking down affirmative action.
Brian Beneker, a script coordinator for Seal Team, alleges in a lawsuit filed in California federal court Wednesday that he was repeatedly denied a staff writer job after the implementation of an “illegal policy of race and sex balancing” that promoted the hiring of “less qualified applicants who were members of more preferred groups,” namely those who identify as minorities, LGBTQ or women. He seeks at least $500,000, as well as a court order making him a full-time producer on the series and barring the further use of discriminatory hiring practices.

The MSNBC journalist opened an “Inside With Jen Psaki” segment on Swift’s history in politics by breaking down how the biggest pop star in the world went from being “notably and publicly apolitical” in 2018 to a figure that some conservatives, including Fox News’ Jesse Watters and former GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy, propose to be a nefarious operative to get President Joe Biden to a second term.
Such theories come not only after her omnipresent popularity in pop culture and beyond with her Eras tour last year, but also in her support of LGBTQ Americans through the Equality Act, her endorsement of Biden in 2020 and her raising the alarm on the impact of overturning Roe vs. Wade in 2022.

In a video posted to X, conservative political commentator and conspiracy theorist Tucker Carlson declared Affirmative Action to be an act of “anti-racism.”
He captioned the six-minute-long video, “The Biden administration is importing millions of third world immigrants to live here illegally, and at same time telling them that white people are the source of their problems. How’s that going to work out in the end?”
Carlson started the video, “Recent white men are at a structural disadvantage in getting jobs and getting contracts and getting into schools; there’s kind of no pretending it’s anything but what it seems to be.”
He continued that America has long been known as a land of opportunity, and implied that it is a meritocracy. He then claimed that affirmative action inverted that, and went on to say that when immigrants come to America they are immediately told white men are evil,...

The Supreme Court announced last week that it would take up a case considering restrictions on the most widely-used method of abortion in the United States: the abortion pill. Under a worst-case scenario for American women, that case could have triggered a full reversal of the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone, cutting off access to the medication across the country. That didn’t happen. The Supreme Court said it would only consider a more narrow set of questions about regulatory changes that have made the abortion pill more accessible in recent years.

It’s no secret that Donald Trump has long promised a widespread immigration crackdown should he retake the White House in 2024. Still, in recent weeks the former president’s rhetoric on immigration has reached an authoritarian fever pitch. On Friday, Trump justified his desire for mass deportations by claiming that American schools “are loaded up with people that don’t speak a word of English.”
During an appearance on the Eric Bolling Podcast, Trump ranted at length about the influx of migrants entering the United States through the southern border,...

On Tuesday, Donald Trump made a vague promise to only personally abuse the powers of the presidency on “day one” of the second administration he hopes to have. For his long-term agenda, Trump is planning to staff major government offices with a crop of the most extreme, vitriolic, and sycophantic Republicans in his orbit — Including known white nationalist and Taylor Swift truther Stephen Miller.
According to a report from Axios, Trump has been mulling which loyalists he will elevate into government if he reclaims the White House. Names floated for various positions include Stephen Miller,...

Time magazine declared Taylor Swift as 2023’s person of the year on Wednesday, and accompanied the announcement with a rare interview from the artist in which she reflected on the year of her career that truly put her on top of the world. Unsurprisingly, right-wing commentators took the opportunity to interpret Swift’s well-earned success to launch into a conspiracy theory bender.

Former president Donald Trump tried to do a charitable thing Sunday, handing out food to Texas National Guard soldiers, troopers, and others who will be working at the border during Thanksgiving. But he then complained that there wasn’t enough food left for him.
“The food looked very good. I wanted to have some, but they didn’t have any for me. They had none left. That’s not good. That’s my kind of food too,” Trump said, drawing some chuckles from the crowd.

Over Labor Day weekend, a podcaster and minor TikTok influencer named Julia Mazur posted a video describing what her Saturday morning looked like for her as a single, child-free 29-year-old woman. After going to a Beyoncé concert the night before, she recounted, she woke up slightly hungover and stayed in bed before deciding to spend her day learning a new shakshuka recipe and catching up on Real Housewives. The point of the video, as Mazur described it, was to counteract the traditional narrative that women of a certain age must...

Presidential Candidate Ron DeSantis said that he would be open to using drone strikes on Mexican drug cartels during a Thursday campaign event in Iowa.
When asked by a voter if he would use “drones” or other military measures against the cartels, DeSantis replied, “Yes. I’ve already said that.”
“We will absolutely reserve the right if they’re invading our country and killing our people, we have the right to defend this country […] and it’s not just if they happen to come over the border,” the Florida governor added.

America First Legal (Afl), the legal nonprofit formed by former Donald Trump adviser Stephen Miller, has filed a lawsuit against Target on behalf of one of the company’s investors.
The lawsuit — which names the company, its Chief Executive Brian Cornell, and its board of directors as defendants — seeks a “declaration that Defendants violated Section 14(a) and Section 10(b) of the Exchange Act,” a voiding of Target’s 2023 director election, financial compensation for their client, and reimbursement for legal bills.

While Hollywood has been a longtime target in the culture wars, this time Fortune 500 firms were hit first. The initial mark was Starbucks. Then it was Morgan Stanley. The Hershey Company and McDonald’s were struck soon after, with BlackRock close behind. Since last year, America First Legal Foundation, a conservative group founded by Stephen Miller, a White House policy advisor under the Trump administration, has been filing complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against major companies arguing corporate diversity and hiring practices run afoul of civil rights laws.
Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down race-conscious admissions in colleges and universities, legal experts say Hollywood should brace for elevated scrutiny around diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and that employers in the private sector could see a surge of reverse discrimination complaints. The legal challenges will be bolstered by the court’s reasoning questioning the use of racial preferences in any context.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid took on two of Donald Trump’s most faithful scions Thursday in a segment for “The ReidOut,” saying threatening letters that Stephen Miller and J.D. Vance wrote to universities reflect an emboldened approach after the Supreme Court’s ruling that effectively struck down affirmative action in colleges.
Reid, in a conversation with activist and former president/director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill, drew a line connecting the language of the Supreme Court’s majority decision and the talking points of the late conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.
Reid then pointed to what she called a direct outcome — letters that Miller, Trump’s former senior White House adviser, and Vance, the U.S. senator from Ohio who was endorsed by Trump, sent to law schools and top universities threatening them with repercussions if they attempted to subvert the ruling.

Stephen Miller, one of Donald Trump’s top immigration advisers, advocated using U.S. predator drones in 2018 to blow up migrant boats full of unarmed civilians, according to an upcoming book by a former administration official.
In a passage reviewed by Rolling Stone, former Trump Department of Homeland Security appointee Miles Taylor writes about an April 2018 conversation in which Miller allegedly advocated an attack on a migrant ship headed for the United States. Miller, Taylor writes, argued for the potential mass killing of civilians by suggesting they were not protected under the U.

Donald Trump for months has been telling people close to him that he plans to bring back his infamous “Muslim ban” if he’s reelected in 2024, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
“Gotta bring it back,” Trump has said of the policy, according to the two sources, who added he regularly calls the idea “beautiful.”
Banning Muslims from entering the United States is a longstanding obsession of Trump’s. In December 2015, during the GOP presidential primary, he called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.
