The rules are simple: Survive 30 days while being hunted by people attempting to kill you, and win one million dollars. As long as you're with another person, the hunters will leave you alone. This is the proposition presented to Tommy Walcott by a paid-to-be-there Andy Samberg in the Hulu film "Self Reliance." Written, directed, produced, and starring Jake Johnson, "Self Reliance" taps into the thrilling anticipation of David Fincher's "The Game," but with a lighthearted sense of humor and hell of a lot of heart that could only come from the guy who gave us Nick Miller on "New Girl" and one of the best episodes of "Mythic Quest."
Tommy decides to exploit the loophole by paying a transient man named James/Walter (Biff Wiff) to stay with him 24/7. He also encounters a woman named Maddy (Anna Kendrick) who is also playing the game, and who Tommy starts to...

He can’t be killed if he’s not entirely alone, leading him to recruit an unlikely team to help him survive.
Review: Jake Johnson is hilarious. After his breakout role as Nick Miller on Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson has appeared alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy, Chris Pratt in the Jurassic World franchise, and voicing Peter B. Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. While Johnson has written several films, including Digging for Fire, Win It All, and Ride the Eagle, he makes his directorial debut with the new film Self Reliance.

Jake Johnson is opening up about working with Olivia Rodrigo!
In 2017, the Grammy winner guest starred in an episode of New Girl titled “Young Adult.” She played a student at the school Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) works at.
During an interview with Rolling Stone, Jake, who starred as Nick Miller on the show, remembered his experience filming with the pop star.
Keep reading to find out what he said…
“The Olivia Rodrigo [episode] was really weird because I remember her and those girls,” he told the magazine. “It was me, Zooey, and the girls, and they were such sweet kids. And some kid actors are just good.”
At the time, Jake and Zooey had a joke that they were managers fighting over talented guest stars.
“We would playfully compete over who’s gonna sign them,” he recalled. “And Zooey‘s bit was always that she’s a sweet manager who takes...

When Jake Johnson applied to Tisch, he submitted a play about a gorilla handler at the zoo whose life and marriage fell apart once his beloved gorilla passed away. He describes it as “wacky but funny” and says he’s been trying to recapture its unique tone ever since. With his feature directorial debut, Self Reliance, he finally has.

Jake Johnson is a TV guy. You probably know him best from his days starring as Nick Miller in seven seasons of "New Girl," but since 2022, he's also starred as Doug Renetti in "Minx." In the series, he clashes with Ophelia Lovibond's Joyce about the running of their joint magazine, Minx, which is half feminist essays and half pornography. And just Fyi: if you run into Johnson and call him one of his characters' names, he'll never get upset.
"I love TV more than movies," Johnson tells Popsugar. "A lot of my generation of actors, when we all came up, everybody was a real snob about TV, and everybody only wanted movies. So I pretended to be cool too and say, like, 'Dude, everything is film.'"
"But growing up, everything to me was TV," he adds. "It was 'Roseanne.

New Girl aired on Fox from 2011 until 2018. While fans of the series would have liked to see it continue, the series ended in a satisfying way. Fans got to see Jess Day, Nick Miller, Schmidt, Cece Parekh, Winston Bishop, and even Coach all find love and move past the roommate phase of life when the show ended. It still hasn’t stopped fans from hoping for a reboot, so what exactly is the cast of New Girl up to these days?

Jake Johnson may have broken out with the sitcom New Girl, but never wants to be the It guy, saying a monumental amount of fame is completely unappealing to him, citing an evening with Tom Cruise, whose level of stardom came with some stipulations.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Johnson said seeing how Tom Cruise is forced to deal with fame even in daily scenarios put him off of the idea. “I went to dinner with Tom Cruise in Africa when we were doing The Mummy. We had an entire meal and I couldn’t believe that people didn’t approach him. But when we walk out, his security makes an announcement. The restaurant stops operation, they all follow outside and line up. He takes a photo with everybody. We found out later they’d told the staff, ‘Let him enjoy his meal and then he’ll take all your photos.

In the far corner of his backyard in Eastside L.A., Jake Johnson hand-built an 8-by-12-foot studio cabin where he does most of his work. Sure, he needs to duck to pass through the petite doorway — roughly a foot short thanks to a minor snafu in his original flooring plan — but it’s cozy and rustic and has borne witness to some of the more fruitful years of the 45-year-old’s Hollywood career. “The house is dominated by them,” says Johnson, affectionately gesturing in the direction of the 9-year-old twin daughters he shares with his wife of 12 years. “So, when I need to work, I come here.”

Years after wrapping up his role as Nick Miller on "New Girl," Jake Johnson is still making us laugh with his latest role as Peter B. Parker in the animated Spider-Verse franchise. In the first film, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," Peter is introduced as a divorced man who never saw himself having kids. However, in the second film, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," we learn that his character has rekindled his romance with his wife, Mary Jane, and become a father to a baby girl named Mayday.
While speaking about Peter's growth in a May 30 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson said he's got "a lot of respect" for Peter because "he's trying to raise little Mayday while saving the world."
Johnson has a lot of similarities with Peter. First of all, the "Minx" actor is also a married man in real life. Although Johnson has rarely opened up about his personal life over the years,...

Jake Johnson is getting behind the camera for his feature directorial debut with Self Reliance. This film finds the main character playing a dangerous game for a lofty sum of cash, but at what price? Hulu acquired the U.S. rights to Self Reliance after a competitive bid with MRC and Paramount Global Content. In addition to directing the feature, Johnson also stars alongside Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Andy Samberg, GaTa (Dave), Emily Hampshire, Mary Holland, Boban Marjanović, Christopher Lloyd and Wayne Brady.
Self Reliance revolves around Tommy, a man who is offered a million dollars to participate in a game in which hunters try to kill him. The catch? They can only attack him when he’s alone. Thinking he’s found a loophole, the man attempts to bring his friends and family into the deal. However, problems arise when no one in his party thinks the game is real.

Jake Johnson’s feature directorial debut, titled “Self Reliance,” is coming to Hulu on Sept. 8. The streamer will launch the comedy thriller, written and starring the “Minx” and “New Girl” star, as a Hulu original.
Hulu acquired the film in a deal with MRC and Paramount Global Distribution after fierce competition following its debut at the SXSW Film Festival in March. The logline for the film reads: “When a man is offered a million dollars to play a game in which hunters try to kill him, he thinks he has found the perfect loophole: they can only attack when he’s alone. His only problem is that none of his friends or family believe the game is real.”
Along with Johnson, the film stars Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Andy Samberg, GaTa (“Dave”), Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek”), Mary Holland, Boban Marjanović, Christopher Lloyd and Wayne Brady.

New Girl‘s iconic “Injured” episode, which premiered in 2013, featured a standout moment in the series. The episode dealt with some of its usual themes like friendship and love. But these were tied in with a very adult lesson on the importance of insurance, all while still providing plenty of laughs and memorable moments. The leads, Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone all delivered top-notch performances, making this episode one of the show’s most memorable and impactful. Netflix subscribers who love shows about a quirky group of roommates will have one less show to watch. New Girl will fall off of the streaming service provider’s roster on April 17, much to the dismay of its longtime fans. There is no reason to despair, though. Jessica Day and her unlikely roommates will move to two new streaming service providers on the very day they depart from Netflix.
‘New Girl’ has been on Netflix for almost a decade
Seeing New Girl leave Netflix on April 17 is kind of a big deal. Not only is the series one of Netflix’s most heavily streamed but it’s been on the platform for a long time. New Girl premiered on Netflix in the summer of 2013, long before the series wrapped its broadcast run.

When New Girl ended in 2018, fans saw a satisfying conclusion. After season after season of near romantic misses, the show’s three main couples were together and happy. Jessica Day and Nick Miller were the last of the group to figure it out, but Jake Johnson, the actor who played Nick Miller for all seven seasons, thinks Nick and Jess made it last long after the final episode of New Girl.
Jake Johnson has thoughts on where Nick and Jess are today
Jake Johnson thinks Nick and Jess are still together. The famed actor appeared on a panel at SXSW and happily discussed where his character would be today. According to IndieWire, Johnson is confident that Nick and Jess would be just as blissfully happy today as they were when the show ended in May 2018.

Elizabeth Merriwether’s sitcom “New Girl” is leaving Netflix after nearly 10 years on the streaming platform for a new home at Hulu and Peacock.
The show, starring Zoey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Jake Johnson and Lamorne and Hannah Simone, becomes available to stream at its new joint streaming homes starting April 17. Ever since the dawn of social media, fans have found creative ways to obsess over their favorite TV shows — be it chat rooms littered with “Lost” theories; Tumblr pages dedicated to “Teen Wolf”; or “Game of Thrones” hashtags filled with millions of tweets during just one episode.

Earlier this year HBO Max premiered the bawdy comedy “Minx,” a series set during the 1970s porn explosion in the San Fernando Valley. Ralph Ahn, who played the fan-favorite “New Girl” character Tran, died on Feb. 26, the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles reported. He was 95.
Ahn appeared in seven episodes of the sitcom alongside Jake Johnson, who played Nick Miller. A man of very few words, Tran serves as a friend and grandfather figure. There doesn’t appear to be a lot of argument that Nick Miller is the best character to come from the show New Girl since a lot of people are still obsessed with him today. The reason for this is that Nick is one of those rare gems that in real life don’t appear to people a lot of times, usually because they’re not looking. A man that likes to be sexually active and inventive but not aggressive is someone that a lot of women would love to find, but apparently can’t. A guy that is sweet but has a definite

For several years I’ve jokingly advocated for the Emmys to add a category specifically for drunk acting. It started when Jake Johnson took acting inebriated to a whole new level as Nick Miller on “New Girl,” but I was again reminded just how tough it can be to portray someone who’s drunk when Paul Bettany humorously nailed it, with purposeful exaggeration, in “WandaVision’s” second episode, “Don’t Touch That Dial.”
In the 1960s-set episode, which draws heavily from the Emmy-winning comedy “Bewitched,” Bettany’s Vision, an android with a synthetic body, accidentally swallows a piece of gum. Because he’s not human, the gum messes with his robot-y circuits or whatever and the outward effect is that he begins to act oddly, like an overly intoxicated person. His speech is slurred. He has no filter and tells the people of Westview he’s about to lie to...

"Something is happening... Something is wrong... I'm seeing things..." Blue Fox Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie horror film titled The Mad Hatter, set to be released sometime this summer. The film marks the feature directorial debut of a storyboard artist on Scott Derrickson's movies now making her first feature. Henry, and three of his classmates, encounter mind-bending ghostly terrors when they volunteer for a weekend study with their psychology professor in the haunted 'Mad Hatter' mansion. Supposedly haunted by those who died at a lavish party in the 1880s. I dig the smoldering embers look of all the ghosts, just hope the rest of it lives up to that potential for something really cool. The film stars Armando Gutierrez, Samuel Caleb Walker, Isadora Cruz, Nick Miller, Michael Berryman, and Rachel Brunner. This does look extremely creepy - check it out. Here's the two main trailers...

Sometimes, 30 seconds feels like a lifetime. In this case that's a good thing, because we have been gifted a 30-second long episode of New Girl that actually made us tear up a little. Jess is all over those ballots, but Nick's trying to fill his out with a red pen. Winston is perfecting the heart in his official signature, and he and Nick are high-fiving over voting by mail. There is, pointedly, not very much to “Hoops.” Netflix’s new comedy, from creator Ben Hoffman and executive producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has about as much ambition and patience as its lackadaisical, hotheaded main character. Ben (executive producer Jake Johnson) is an abrasive Kentucky high school basketball coach whose only real goals in life are to win some games, make his ex-wife (Natasha Leggero) regret their separation and piss off his successful father (Rob Riggle). That he’s only occasionally successful when it comes to alienating his dad rarely bothers him; Ben’s a textbook Teflon man, and tomorrow’s another day. For the most part, both he and the show itself are perfectly happy to stumble through their toxic misadventures and encourage everyone they meet to indulge their basest instincts.
Plenty of comedies have been based on less, and “Hoops” has the advantage of a solid voice...

If you've spent a good portion of this quarantine watching or rewatching New Girl, you are not alone. The Fox comedy ended in May of 2018, and it seems to have found a little resurgence two years later, as fans are rediscovering just how good it was, and even just how prescient it might have been. Nick Miller has even trended on Twitter a time or two in the past few weeks, while Schmidt impressions and cool New Girl-related word art videos have been all the rage on TikTok. One TikTok user even discovered that the show might have predicted the pandemic. Season seven time jumped three years from 2017 to 2020, and in the first episode, Schmidt can be seen wearing a face mask and...

We may all be staying at home right now, but there's one woman who has us aching to head back to the mall: Robin Sparkles. How I Met Your Mother fans got a special treat when actress Cobie Smulders paid tribute to her character Robin Scherbatsky's Canadian pop-star alter ego. The star took an unexpected trip down memory lane while on a virtual hangout with Stumptown costar Jake Johnson for Vulture's Instagram Live series Two Friends: A Nice Time Hanging Out With People Who Know Each Other Well. While the two reminisced about their former long-running television series (Johnson played the lovable Nick Miller on New Girl), fans begged Smulders to sing her character's infamous song, "Let's Go to the Mall."
After some nudging from Johnson - in which the actor demanded that Smulders "Give us a goddamn 10. We're all living in Covid-19, give us a damn 10." - the Friends...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Who is your favorite musical guest star on a scripted show? Past and present shows apply.
Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire
Aside from the curious acting career of one Sturgill Simpson, I’m not all that interested in musicians testing out their acting skills. The elements of performance that tie the two pursuits together can make a singer an enticing screen presence, but it’s usually their appearance on the show that spikes my interest before any of their music — if they’re a good actor, great, but if they’re just there for a ratings hit or to hook music fans, I’m good. That being said, I must say I made sure to watch Bruce Springsteen’s guest stint in the final episode “Lilyhammer.” Appearing as an eccentric mortician,...

There’s a new girl in Jake Johnson‘s life: The actor will star opposite Cobie Smulders in ABC’s upcoming fall drama Stumptown, TVLine has learned.
Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, the show follows Dex Parios (Smulders), “a strong, assertive and sharp-witted Army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon,” per the network’s official description. “Her military intelligence skills make her a great P.I., but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police.

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and Bob Crane was beaten to death in 1978… whoops, wrong one. I gotta get that delete button already. Nxt looks to be eventful this week, so let’s see how well every-thing goes.
Match #1: Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch def. The Mighty The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
On the road to establishing themselves as the premier tag team in Nxt, Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch continued their tour de force this week. It was put up or shut up for the bruisers-in-arms, as they went up against the maestros of underhanded maneuvers, The Mighty. While Shane Thorne & Nick Miller used their signature sly yet calculated double-team tactics to wear down Lorcan & Burch’s combined brute force, such as tossing the bruisers into each other whenever the momentum shifted, the effectiveness eventually grew thin. When...

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have more weird stuff from Nxt.
Match #1: Nikki Cross def. Mercedes Martinez The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
Nikki Cross and her brand of chaos opened this week’s Nxt, but this time Nxt’s Twisted Sister engaged in a fierce battle against former Mae Young Classic competitor Mercedes Martinez, who recently put on a classic against Meiko Satomura in the tournament’s Second Round. Stepping inside the yellow ropes this week, The Latina Sensation carried that same energy, along with presenting a massive hurdle for Nxt’s Twisted Sister.
In a true battle of brute force and unhinged aggression, the two brawlers vigorously (and visibly) pushed each other to their limits. When Cross attempted a sleeper hold, Martinez thrust her into the turnbuckle. When Martinez locked in a suffocating guillotine,...

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have a match that might be the best WWE match of the week. As Reese Witherspoon always says, “Jumpin’ Jack Flash is a gas, gas, gas”!
Match #1: Street Profits def. The Mighty The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
The Mighty were out to make The Street Profits pay after Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford’s partying caused the “Aussie Action Heroes” to lose to Heavy Machinery two weeks ago. As is their new M.O., Shane Thorne & Nick Miller bent (and outright broke) the rules whenever they could, allowing them to quench the Profits’ red-hot start (which included a special shout-out to Wakanda). Thorne & Miller smothered Dawkins and used quick tags to cut off the ring on The Curse of Greatness.
Dawkins eventually broke free and tagged in Ford, who lit up both Mighty Superstars with clotheslines.

Match #1: Heavy Machinery def. The Mighty The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
With Tucker Knight back in action after a sneak attack put him on the shelf several weeks ago, Heavy Machinery were looking to score payback against Knight’s presumed assailants, The Mighty. Once he got into the ring, Knight took out his frustrations on Shane Thorne & Nick Miller, dropping both Mighty members with clotheslines, side slams and a cannonball splash from the ring apron to the floor. The underhanded Australian Superstars gained the...

Match #1: Dakota Kai beat Santana Garrett – Women’s Match The following is courtesy of WWE.com:
Dakota Kai had her work cut out for her against fellow former Mae Young Classic competitor Santana Garrett. Yet, with Lacey Evans taunting Kai over recent losses, the Kiwi Superstar refused to be anything less than victorious tonight. Garrett contorted and stretched Kai’s body with submission holds, including an artfully applied Muta Lock, but The Captain of Team Kick turned things around with a step-up enzuigiri. Kai then demolished Garrett with a pair of boots in the corner before putting her away with a flipping backstabber that Nigel McGuinness called the “Kai De Grâce.”
Kai continues to transform from doe-eyed to laser-focused before the Nxt Universe’s eyes. But will her latest win do...

Facebook wants to entice more video-game broadcasters — and their fans — to use its platform, rolling out several features that will ratchet up competition with category pioneer Twitch.
In January, Facebook launched a gaming-creator program, paying some top players to stream exclusively on Facebook.
It has now started to actively promote a new gaming-video destination that it quietly debuted in the past few weeks — Facebook Gaming, at facebook.com/gaming — that aggregates live and prerecorded video in one place. The social giant also has started letting a few game-streaming partners let fans subscribe as supporters to their channels, for $5 per month, a la Twitch, in addition to selling “Facebook Stars” to let users cheer for their favorite players (akin to the Twitch emotes available to paying members).
And Facebook is launching a new program, Level Up, for video-game streamers who are just starting out, to help them build a fanbase and earn money from their gameplay.

Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) is getting compliment after compliment on the day of her wedding to Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) in Tuesday’s penultimate episode of “New Girl” — too bad everyone is straight up lying to her face. A face partially covered by an eyepatch.
In a clip from the second to last installment of the Fox comedy, which is exclusive to TheWrap, we see Jess’ mother, Joan, (Jamie Lee Curtis) her best friend Cece (Hannah Simone) and Winston’s very pregnant wife Aly (Nasim Pedrad) all complimenting her.
“You’re as beautiful as the day you slid out of me,” Joan tells her. “No one is going to be able to take their eyes off you,” Cece adds.”You’re a vision,” Aly coos. They all deny she looks like a “pirate bride,” before 3-year-old Ruth speaks the truth.

Tom Brady arrived in a stylish grey trench coat ahead of his Super Bowl Lii performance, and it lit Twitter aflame with theories of his potential double life as a spy.
Brady, 40, might be a well-established quarterback for the New England Patriots, but his trench coat, along with dark sunglasses and earbuds as he was escorted by security through the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Sunday, had many wondering about a possible shadow career.

Since “New Girl” arrived on Netflix, it has been binge-watched by millions of viewers who have pretty similar feelings about the show: it is amazing. With the perfect combination of ‘90s sweetness (think Full House hugs and lessons learned) and smart, witty banter (think The Office without the dryness) this show really knocks audiences off their feet with comedy. “New Girl” follows a story of Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) who finds herself moving into a loft apartment with three rather different men. Two of these men, Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield), have been buddies since they were
