‘New Girl’ Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
Back when New Girl first aired in 2011, we as audiences were introduced to Zooey Deschanel’s eccentric teacher Jessica Day, who moved into an apartment loft with three single men, following her bad breakup.

And in the aftermath of her relocation, it was the unexpected events and the roommates/dysfunctional family dynamics that turned the sitcom into a major hit.

A still from New Girl | image: 20th Century Fox Television

So now, after almost a decade, as former co-stars, Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield had a mini-reunion at this year’s SAG Awards, it became a major nostalgic moment for the New Girl fans. Not to mention, back in 2024, Jake Johnson, Greenfield, and Lamorne Morris had even admitted to being open to the idea of coming back.

But sadly, as the revival is yet to happen, let’s take a look at the main cast of New Girl, and what...

Jake Johnson and Gareth Reynolds Tried to Pause Their Podcast. Fans Wouldn’t Let Them
Image
In December, Jake Johnson and Gareth Reynolds announced that their advice podcast, We’re Here to Help, would be coming to a temporary end. The duo had released more than 140 episodes, sometimes devoting five hours a day to recording, and it became unsustainable. Reynolds, a touring comedian, was often Zooming in from the road and Johnson was in the midst of producing a new movie. It made sense to hit pause.

“It kept growing and it got way bigger than I expected,” Johnson says, speaking from his home studio in Los Angeles.

The 5 Best Spider-Man Voice Actors, Ranked
Image
"Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" is here and is already playing with our marvelous expectations about the wall-crawling superhero.

When fans debate who is the best Spider-Man, the contest is usually between the three movie star Spider-Men. You know, the Spider trio that shared the big screen in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" — Tobey Maguire (from the original Sam Raimi-directed "Spider-Man" trilogy), Andrew Garfield (from the "Amazing Spider-Man" films), and Tom Holland.

Each of these three Spider-Men have passionate champions, but "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" reminds us of how many more actors have given their voice to Peter Parker. The new series' Spider-Man voice, Hudson Thames, has gotten himself into hot water for using the anti-diversity dog whistle "Woke" to describe what "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" isn't. Some fans have even suggested, with varying degrees of seriousness, that the show should recast Thames with one of the trusted veteran Spider-Man voice actors.

The new Los Angeles-based venture is run by producer Swati Shetty and veteran CAA agent Grant Kessman, and the rights were acquired from U.K.-based Celador, which produced and financed the 2008 box office hit in association with the U.K.’s Film4.

Slumdog Millionaire, directed by Danny Boyle, starred Dev Patel in his breakout role and Freida Pinto, and earned eight Oscars, including best director and best picture. The film revolved around the adventures of Jamal (Patel) and his older brother, Salim, poor kids from Mumbai who later team up with a beautiful young girl named Latika, played by Pinto.

The death of their mother in a religious riot and their general struggle to survive as kids and young adults are intercut with Jamal’s present-day appearances...

Jake Johnson's 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
In recent years, Jake Johnsons distinctive comedic talents and innate likability have established him as one of Hollywood's most hilarious comedy actors. While Johnson is best known for his role as Nick Miller on the Fox sitcom New Girl, hes also carved out an impressive career in movies, as his laid-back, self-deprecating, dry delivery brought an infectious charm to his performances that are unlike any other actor working today. Just as comfortable in acclaimed animated movies as in live-action comedy, Johnson boasts an impressive filmography.

Much like Johnsons New Girl character Nick Miller, Johnsons acting style blended over-the-top antics, witty comebacks, and a sense of vulnerability that led to fantastic performances in some of the best comedies of the 2010s. Through his fruitful collaborations with director Joe Swanberg, Johnson often co-writes his own material where he originates unique and compelling characters tailored to his personality. With an astounding career that includes quirky indies,...

15 Modern Sitcom Characters Who Have Gotten Better With Age
Image
Sitcoms often have the most interesting characters on television. Due to the nature of the genre, sitcom characters can be quirky, unique and as far or close to reality as they please, which makes them memorable. However, there are too many characters, like Barney Stinson and Ross Geller, who are iconic but have aged poorly due to their regressive thinking or actions in their respective shows.

In the vast landscape of television shows, sitcom characters are rarely ahead of their time. Most characters in an ensemble are a product of the age that the sitcom was created in, but some characters are the exception. Shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl and Derry Girls had carefully crafted sitcom characters who have stayed likable and also aged well in today's day and age.

Updated on October 11, 2024 by Lynette Guzman: Despite many new TV show options, many viewers enjoy revisiting old favorite sitcoms.

New Girl's Best Love Story Is Not Between Jess & Nick
Image
Fox's hit comedy New Girl resonates with viewers for its honest look at struggling roommates in Los Angeles and its improvisational comedic timing. The show follows elementary school teacher Jess Day (played by Zooey Deschanel) as she finds herself moving into a loft with male roommates after she catches her boyfriend cheating on her. The roommates, Winston Bishop (played by Lamorne Morris), Schmidt (played by Max Greenfield), and Nick Miller (played by Jake Johnson) each have their own unique history with one another from their childhood and college years, which comes into play as they forge their paths into adulthood.

The show offers a romantic slow burn between Jess and Nick, even amid their vastly different personalities. While the show's central couple have excellent chemistry, sometimes their differences get the best of them, driving them apart. On the contrary, Schmidt and Jess' best friend Cece consistently push each other to grow and improve as people,...

Lamorne Morris Tells New Girls Fans to 'Call Jake Johnson Out' for Revival Refusal
Image
New Girl ended its run in 2018, but it gained a cult following that's eagerly anticipating a revival or spinoff. Co-stars Lamorne Morris and Jake Johnson have been playing hot potato over reunion talks, but Lamorne wants fans to know it's Johnson who's holding things up.

Lamorne Morris is committed to a New Girl reunion despite co-star Jake Johnson's ambivalent response. Johnson and Morris co-starred as mainstay characters Nick Miller and Winston Bishop, childhood friends living with Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) in the same loft. The show had such an eclectic ensemble it endeared audiences for seven seasons before it was canceled due to sustained rating drops. New Girl did give its characters a proper sendoff, but Morris is adamant the series could still go on. In an interview with ComicBook, he called out Johnson to admit he's the reason why a New Girl reunion wouldn't launch.

New Girl Star Says It's Too Soon For A Reunion Series
Image
Many popular sitcoms are getting reunion or reboot treatments with varied levels of success. However, Max Greenfield, who played Schmidt on New Girl, believes it's too soon for any sort of revival.

Speaking to ComicBook while promoting his new Netflix film Unfrosted, Greenfield explained why a New Girl revival should be delayed. "It hasn't been that long. The Most Confusing Moments In Jake Johnson's Self Reliance Explained
Image
The rules are simple: Survive 30 days while being hunted by people attempting to kill you, and win one million dollars. As long as you're with another person, the hunters will leave you alone. This is the proposition presented to Tommy Walcott by a paid-to-be-there Andy Samberg in the Hulu film "Self Reliance." Written, directed, produced, and starring Jake Johnson, "Self Reliance" taps into the thrilling anticipation of David Fincher's "The Game," but with a lighthearted sense of humor and hell of a lot of heart that could only come from the guy who gave us Nick Miller on "New Girl" and one of the best episodes of "Mythic Quest."

Tommy decides to exploit the loophole by paying a transient man named James/Walter (Biff Wiff) to stay with him 24/7. He also encounters a woman named Maddy (Anna Kendrick) who is also playing the game, and who Tommy starts to...

New Girl: Why Zooey Deschanel's Jess Left In Season 5
Image
Zooey Deschanel left New Girl in season 5 due to pregnancy, leading to a storyline with Megan Fox's character Reagan joining the group. The show went against typical sitcom tropes by having Jess and Reagan become friends instead of romantic rivals, adding a unique dynamic. Deschanel juggled motherhood with her role on New Girl, bonding with Megan Fox over the challenges of being a working parent.

As Zooey Deschanel was the lead of the popular sitcom, many fans wonder why Jess left New Girl temporarily in season 5. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl followed Jessica Day (Deschanel), a bubbly, young teacher who, after discovering her boyfriend cheated on her, moved into a loft with three complete strangers: Nick Miller, Schmidt, and Coach, who was quickly replaced by Winston, though he did return. Aside from that, the main cast remained the same – except in season 5, when Jess left for a string of episodes.

Review: Jake Johnson Delivers a Likable Directorial Debut With Self Reliance
Image
It's been nearly six years since the end of New Girl, but actor Jake Johnson is still best known for his role as endearingly schlubby bartender Nick Miller on that hit Fox sitcom. Maybe that's because Johnson has taken very Nick Miller-like roles in his subsequent career, remaining in his wheelhouse of lovable slackers struggling to mature and grow. Even in a movie he wrote and directed, Johnson sticks with the kind of character he knows best, but that works to the advantage of his charming directorial debut, Self Reliance.

Although Johnson keeps things low-key in Self Reliance, he builds the story around a sci-fi high concept that recalls bigger-budget movies like The Running Man and David Fincher's The Game. Even within a limited budget, Johnson suggests a mysterious realm of manipulative overlords beyond the existence of his downtrodden protagonist. Johnson plays Tommy Walcott, who's introduced via a montage...

“It Wasn’t A Loved Show”: New Girl’s Decline & End Before Netflix Era Relived In Detail By Star

New Girl declined in popularity during its run and lost industry attention. Critics turned on the show around season 3, causing a change in perception of the show, per Jake Johnson. The show did not have a traditional farewell and talk show appearances, but found a new generation of viewers on Netflix.

New Girl star Jake Johnson candidly looks back on the show's mixed trajectory, detailing how it declined in popularity. The sitcom was created by Elizabeth Meriwether and ran for seven seasons on Fox. But it has maintained a supportive audience due to its streaming availability, showcasing the talents of Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, Damon Wayans Jr., and Johnson. But when it concluded in 2018, New Girl's ratings had shrunk noticeably and lost the industry attention it once had.

Jake Johnson Showed He’s a Great Screenwriter With This Netflix Comedy
Image
Jake Johnson is one of the rare sitcom stars who successfully made the shift from television to feature film. Following his acclaimed run as Nick Miller on the hit Fox sitcom New Girl, Johnson’s talents were earmarked, leading him to give several great film performances. As fun as it was to see him pop up for scene-stealing supporting roles in Hollywood blockbusters like Jurassic World and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Johnson proved himself to be a much more accomplished actor than one may have expected through his more profound work in several independent features. Johnson’s talents extend beyond acting, as he is also an accomplished screenwriter, having written the best role of his career thus far in the 2017 dramedy Win it All.

Self Reliance Cast & Character Guide - Who Stars In Jake Johnson's Directorial Debut
Image
Self Reliance is Jake Johnson's directorial debut with a stellar cast that turns absurdity into memorable characters. Anna Kendrick shines as Maddy, a woman who forms a romantic connection with the emotionally stunted Tommy. Biff Wiff delivers a standout performance as James, a homeless man who helps Tommy navigate the dangerous reality show.

Jake Johnson has been a staple of television for a long time, but he’s graduated to directing movies — and his directorial debut, Self Reliance, has a stellar cast to tell its wild, twisty comedic tale. Self Reliance has received a mostly positive critical reception, and while it’s quite absurd in its premise, the exceptional cast make the most out of it and turn their characters into memorable ones (even if some actors are just playing themselves).

Jake Johnson Reveals What it Was Like Working With Olivia Rodrigo on 'New Girl'

Jake Johnson is opening up about working with Olivia Rodrigo!

In 2017, the Grammy winner guest starred in an episode of New Girl titled “Young Adult.” She played a student at the school Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) works at.

“We would playfully compete over who’s gonna sign them,” he recalled. “And Zooey‘s bit was always that she’s a sweet manager who takes...

"Minx" Star Jake Johnson Doesn't Mind If Fans Call Him Nick Miller Forever
Image
This interview was conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 14.

Jake Johnson is a TV guy. You probably know him best from his days starring as Nick Miller in seven seasons of "New Girl," but since 2022, he's also starred as Doug Renetti in "Minx." In the series, he clashes with Ophelia Lovibond's Joyce about the running of their joint magazine, Minx, which is half feminist essays and half pornography. And just Fyi: if you run into Johnson and call him one of his characters' names, he'll never get upset.

"I love TV more than movies," Johnson tells Popsugar. "A lot of my generation of actors, when we all came up, everybody was a real snob about TV, and everybody only wanted movies. So I pretended to be cool too and say, like, 'Dude, everything is film.'"

"But growing up, everything to me was TV," he adds. "It was 'Roseanne.

Tom Cruise’s fame scared The Mummy co-star Jake Johnson off
Image
Jake Johnson may have broken out with the sitcom New Girl, but never wants to be the It guy, saying a monumental amount of fame is completely unappealing to him, citing an evening with Tom Cruise, whose level of stardom came with some stipulations.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Johnson said seeing how Tom Cruise is forced to deal with fame even in daily scenarios put him off of the idea. “I went to dinner with Tom Cruise in Africa when we were doing The Mummy. We had an entire meal and I couldn’t believe that people didn’t approach him. But when we walk out, his security makes an announcement. The restaurant stops operation, they all follow outside and line up. He takes a photo with everybody. We found out later they’d told the staff, ‘Let him enjoy his meal and then he’ll take all your photos.

Hollywood Offered Jake Johnson a Path to Mega-Stardom, He Chose a Regular Life
Image
In the far corner of his backyard in Eastside L.A., Jake Johnson hand-built an 8-by-12-foot studio cabin where he does most of his work. Sure, he needs to duck to pass through the petite doorway — roughly a foot short thanks to a minor snafu in his original flooring plan — but it’s cozy and rustic and has borne witness to some of the more fruitful years of the 45-year-old’s Hollywood career. “The house is dominated by them,” says Johnson, affectionately gesturing in the direction of the 9-year-old twin daughters he shares with his wife of 12 years. “So, when I need to work, I come here.”

The Chicago native is best known for his seven-season stint playing confident idiot Nick Miller on the Fox comedy New Girl. But he’s leveraged his sitcom success into a unique résumé — rejecting his agents’ plans for a blockbuster track, like the...

Jake Johnson Says He Wouldn't Let His Spider-Verse Character Babysit His Twin Daughters
Image
Years after wrapping up his role as Nick Miller on "New Girl," Jake Johnson is still making us laugh with his latest role as Peter B. Parker in the animated Spider-Verse franchise. In the first film, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," Peter is introduced as a divorced man who never saw himself having kids. However, in the second film, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse," we learn that his character has rekindled his romance with his wife, Mary Jane, and become a father to a baby girl named Mayday.

While speaking about Peter's growth in a May 30 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Johnson said he's got "a lot of respect" for Peter because "he's trying to raise little Mayday while saving the world."

Johnson has a lot of similarities with Peter. First of all, the "Minx" actor is also a married man in real life. Although Johnson has rarely opened up about his personal life over the years,...

Tragic Sitcom Character Question Ignites Illuminating & Hysterical Conversation On Overlooked Plots
Image
A viral Twitter post ignites an illuminating and hysterical discussion about sitcoms overlooking characters' unresolved trauma. Since the advent of television itself, the situational comedy has been a popular genre known for its comedic and lighthearted portrayal of everyday life, most famously in I Love Lucy, Cheers, Seinfeld, The Office, Fraiser, and more. However, the sitcom's lighthearted and escapist tone means that they often mine characters' deep-seated emotional issues for comedy.

A recent viral Twitter post from no context sitcoms opined, "One thing about sitcoms is that there’s always that one character that has some kind of deep unresolved trauma that gets completely overlooked for the laughs." The observation sparked an amusing and oftentimes enlightening discussion, with many chiming in and mentioning famous sitcom characters who fit the bill. Check out the original post and a few of the responses below:

New Girl: Why Nick & Jess Getting Together Was A Mistake
Image
The main couple in New Girl was Nick and Jess, who first got together in season 2, but their relationship was a mistake. New Girl followed young and bubbly teacher Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel), who moved into a loft with three strangers she found on the internet after finding out that her boyfriend cheated on her. After a period of adjustment that wasn’t easy, Jess became very close to her roommates Schmidt (Greenfield), Nick Miller (Johnson), and Winston (Lamorne Morris). The bond between Jess and Nick was much stronger right from the get-go, and although Jess had several boyfriends in New Girl, she and Nick ended up together, getting married in the final season. A flash forward in the season finale revealed they had started their own family and remained close to Schmidt and Cece, and Winston and Ally.

Despite how popular and beloved the Nick and Jess pairing became,...

New Girl Cast & Character Guide
Image
The New Girl cast is full of hugely talented actors bringing its quirky, lovable characters to life. The series revolves around Jess Day, a bubbly teacher who moves into a loft in Los Angeles with three wacky roommates after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl ran for seven seasons and was a hit with both critics and audiences. The New Girl cast was given the freedom to improvise lines, and the spontaneity of the ad-libbed dialogue went a long way toward making the characters feel real and catching the attention of a mainstream audience.

Some characters in New Girl are grounded and relatable, like Jess and her on-and-off love interest Nick Miller, while others are zany comedic personalities, like Schmidt, the secret main character of New Girl, and Outside Dave. In every case, the producers found the perfect actor to play each part. The...
