Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin has reiterated his plans to write a sequel to his acclaimed drama, The Social Network, examining the origins of Facebook, one that will home in on the social media platform’s impact on U.S. democracy.
On a just dropped episode of entertainment business podcast The Town, taped live in Washington, D.C. atr WME’s White House Correspondents Dinner pre-party last night , Sorkin said, “Look, yeah, I’ll be writing about this. I blame Facebook for January 6.”
When asked to elaborate on how the project will tackle the events of that infamous day, which saw a mob of supporters of then-u.S. president Donald Trump storming the U.S. Capitol Building, he said matter-of-factly, “You’re going to need to buy a movie ticket.”
Sorkin did share, though, that he’s been “trying” to crack the project as a film specifically. “Facebook has been,...

“I like the stock.”
If only the world of high finance could accept things as simply as that.
As we learned in 2021, the so-called masters of the universe had written off GameStop, the venerable supply of used video games and assorted tech gear. The only one, it seemed, who still believed in them was Keith Gill, who live-blogged as Roaring Kitty. With incredible transparency, he shared his spreadsheets and showed his faith by buying up shares, which encouraged others to follow suit.
The run-up of the stock, fueled by the disruptor app Robinhood, spooked Wall Street and led to at least one capitol group crumbling with hubris.
Finance can make you want to shut down and read a book, such as The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich, which inspired the film, but like the superb The Big Short, the 2023 film Dumb Money walks you through this Byzantine world. Director Craig Gillespie...

I've interviewed a lot of people this year for /Film, but none better reflected the energy of the film they wrote than Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, the screenwriters of "Dumb Money." Their enthusiasm and rapid-fire speech patterns, in which they frequently were so excited that they'd finish each other's sentences, was infectious to listen to, and it perfectly aligned with the way their script (and director Craig Gillespie and his editors) unspooled the chaos of the GameStop stock story for the big screen. It also indicated a deep level of comfort these two have with each other as co-workers: Through collaborating together for over ten years, first as investigative journalists and then as screenwriters, they've formed the type of mind-meld that sounds familiar if you've ever read about how the Coen Brothers make decisions on set. There's a shorthand on display, and they each possess the same exact...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Dumb Money, directed by Craig Gillespie and penned by financial journalists-turned-screenwriters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo based on Ben Mezrich’s bestseller The Antisocial Network.

Dumb Money producer Aaron Ryder talked Saturday about why he wanted to bring to screen the story of GameStop’s short squeeze of 2021, a financial fluke that has gone down in history as a triumph for the little guy against the behemoths of Wall Street.
Speaking at Deadline’s Contenders Film Los Angeles event, Ryder revealed he had been inspired to make the film after tirelessly following the story in real time during lockdown.
“I went deep on it, trying to understand what the short was and to educate myself,” he told moderator Anthony D’Alessandro. “I got a call from MGM [where he has a production deal], who said, ‘We think there’s a movie here.’

The Craig Gillespie directorial venture Dumb Money is a prime example of how a movie about characters involved in technical stuff should be made. Based on the book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich, the 2023 film is the story of a few retail investors who began to buy stocks of a video game store called GameStop and how that impacted the billion-dollar hedge fund managers who made their money primarily through ‘short selling’. The performances are great, and the pacing, the cinematography, and the overall setting surely remind one of David Fincher’s The Social Network. Funny that this film is based on a book with almost the same name! The casting is spot on, and with a great background score, the movie creates an atmosphere where this big fish vs. little fish fight really becomes palpable, even though the jargon might go over our heads.

In January 2021, Dumb Money producer Aaron Ryder was in the midst of a mandatory two-week quarantine in Montreal, and to pass the time, he began to track the ever-evolving situation with GameStop’s stock. The struggling video game retailer became the apple of the internet’s eye, as Redditors on the WallStreetBets subreddit and YouTube investors like Keith Gill’s Roaring Kitty (portrayed by Paul Dano in Dumb Money) were leading the Gme stock short squeeze in an effort to give hedge fund short sellers a taste of their own medicine.
Around the same time, Ryder’s company, Ryder Picture Company, had just launched and entered into a first-look deal with MGM, and as all this drama was still unfolding with GameStop’s soaring stock, the Oscar nominee became a part of the deal for author Ben Mezrich’s GameStop-related book proposal that would later become The Antisocial Network. “I like the stock!”
In terms of revolutionary rallying cries, it’s no “Liberté, égalité, fraternité!” or “We will fight them on the beaches …” or “They will never take our freedom!” But by the time that Keith Gill, a.k.a. Roaring Kitty — Reddit and YouTube poster, red headband model, reluctant messiah — told a congressional committee that he’d inspired dozens of online traders to buy stock in GameStop partially because he felt it was undervalued, yet mostly because he liked it, something close to a movement had already taken place.

Six years after directing Allison Janney to an Oscar-winning performance in “I, Tonya,” Craig Gillespie returns with “Dumb Money,” another serio-comic tale based on a true story that is certain to be another major awards contender. His new Sony Pictures release, which debuted to a raucous reception at TIFF on September 8, recounts the ups and downs of the 2021 short squeeze of Game Stop stock that rattled the financial industry.
Ben Mezrich chronicled this unlikely story in his bestseller “The Antisocial Network,” and Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo have deftly adapted it for the screen. They focus on Keith Gill, the marketing professional who sank his life savings into the stock and then posted about it on Reddit. After his stock tip ignited a movement, Wall Street bankers balked and fought back.

Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop into the world’s hottest company. Dumb Money, a crowd-pleasing dramedy about the “short squeeze” of GameStop stock during the darkest days of the pandemic and really about the brewing frustration with financial inequality in America that has defined much of the 21st century, had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival Friday night. The premiere at the Roy Thomson Hall marks what could be the beginning of an awards season push.
Adapted from Ben Mezrich’s 2021 book The Antisocial Network by Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum and directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), the film seems first and foremost a commercial play — it’s a relatively low-budget film ($30 million, reportedly) with a high potential upside.
Like other recent dramedies about the financial system — from The Wolf of Wall Street to The Big Short — it takes complex subject matter and makes it amusing and digestible for anyone. This film is not as polished...

The 2021 Reddit vs Wall Street saga gets a fast and fizzy big screen adaptation with an ensemble cast including Paul Dano and Seth Rogen
For those with one eye trained on a news chyron for at least part of the day, it might seem a little too soon to be sitting down to watch Hollywood’s definitive retelling of 2021’s GameStop saga, an all-consuming financial soap opera that forced many of us to suddenly feign expertise in what a short squeeze is. But it’s perhaps fitting that the story, which trickled up from Reddit to Wall Street within weeks and was turned from a CNN ratings-winner to an Amazon bestseller within months, would become a film in just over two years.
It was an inevitable race to production with other projects announced around the same time but it was an adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s speedily written The Antisocial Network that won out,...

In January 2021, retail investors posting on the r/WallStreetBets subreddit rallied behind the nearly bankrupt GameStop video game retail chain, blindsiding professional and institutional brokers who had wagered against it. Their efforts would cost Melvin Capital – which first put GameStop in the short position – $6.8 billion and would culminate in House Financial Services Committee hearings in Washington. It’s the stuff of legend.
The saga has already spawned multiple documentaries and docuseries, including one each at Netflix, Max and Hulu. “Dumb Money,” the first dramatic take that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, came together in an impressively short time, arriving while national headlines are still fresh in our collective memory. Aaron Ryder was in a hurry. He knew other producers were chasing the GameStop story that was flooding headlines in 2021, as day traders ran up the stock for the brick-mortar store that had been shorted by several hedge funds. One single investor, Keith Gill (Paul Dano) believed the stock was undervalued and plowed his life savings into it. “You don’t even own a house!” a frustrated friend tells him in “Dumb Money” the movie adapted by former investigative reporters Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo from Ben Mezrich’s book “The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees,” with Craig Gillespie at the helm.

Movies about the financial markets inevitably have the same problem. It simply isn’t that visually compelling watching people stare at their computers or phones and muttering expletives. Adam McKay’s The Big Short managed to avoid the pitfall thanks to its truly memorable characters and such stylistic flourishes as having Margot Robbie explain complicated financial concepts directly to the camera while lounging in a bathtub.
Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, about the 2021 GameStop stock phenomenon fueled by individual investors driven by social media, doesn’t prove quite as successful. Nonetheless, the film receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival proves entertaining enough, thanks to its canny screenplay relating the story as a Frank Capra-style battle between the little people and the rich bigwigs hoisted by their own petards, and the fun performances by a terrific ensemble.

It is only appropriate that Sony’s terrific new comedy Dumb Money starts with the Columbia Pictures logo. That was the studio that Frank Capra famously helped build with his movies where the little guy triumphs over the corporate bad guys. Dumb Money is positively Capra-esque in the way it tells its improbable David vs. Goliath story about how an internet geek started a movement that blew up the heretofore loser stock of shopping mall game store GameStop and became the toast of Wall Street, while bankrupting a couple of billionaire hedge funds in the process. It movie had its world premiere tonight at the Toronto Film Festival before its theatrical release later this month.

Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money” could be the most frightening horror movie this year, and the Oscars would be smart to embrace it. From the critically acclaimed director Craig Gillespie, his smart and at times tragic look at the GameStop stock story of 2021 entertained the audiences of the Toronto Film Festival on Friday night where it held its world premiere.
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey introduced the film and Gillespie brought up his fellow producers Aaron Ryder and Teddy Schwarzman, along with EPs and writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who sported the film’s title on each of their purses.

How lucky for us that Hayao Miyazaki, the animation master with a gift for enchanting world-building, didn’t stay retired? The prolific Japanese filmmaker makes an exciting return with The Boy and the Heron, which opened in Japan earlier this summer. Inspired by Genzaburo Yoshino’s novel How Do You Live?, The Boy and the Heron chronicles the adventures of a young, bereft boy who discovers an abandoned tower and a persistent grey heron while exploring his new town.
Dicks: The Musical
A24’s first musical feature is a ride that, for better or worse, I’m ready to get on. Comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp play two businessmen who find out they are twins and try to reunite their parents.

Updated: Craig Gillespie’s Dumb Money, which is making its Toronto Film Festival world premiere this weekend, is still on course for a three-step platform release September 15 (in LA & NYC) and September 22, but will now break wide on September 29 instead of October 6.
The comedy also sidesteps Universal’s The Exorcist: The Believer.
Its the latest movie to step out of the way of the AMC-distributed concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, which as of last week clocked more than $37 million from the three big theater circuits — AMC, Regal and Cinemark — in its first 24 hours of presales ahead of its October 13 release. It will play October 13-15, 19-22, 26-29 and October 31 and November 2-5 at AMC, Regal, Cinemark in Dolby and Imax.
Apple Original Films/Paramount’s Killers of the Flower Moon is going wide now on Oct. 20, as we reported previously; a change-up from the pic’s original plans below.

As has become standard in recent years, our annual fall and winter film preview comes with something of an asterisk: it’s (another!) unpredictable time for movies, right down to when we might even expect to see them. With both the WGA and SAG-afra strikes still winding on, everything from production to promotion has been disrupted for many new features, and the entire calendar remains in flux.
And yet, even with those very valid concerns in place, the next three months at the multiplex (and beyond) offer a bounty of exciting new films. We’re talking new films from Martin Scorsese, Pablo Larraín, Sofia Coppola, Todd Haynes, Emerald Fennell, David Fincher, Jonathan Glazer, Taika Waititi, Justine Triet, Wes Anderson, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Jeff Nichols is back, as is Godfrey Reggio and the juicy stars of “Chicken Run.” Festival faves like Christos Nikou, Kristoffer Borgli, and Chloe Domont make a play for further dominance.

“Dumb Money,” Sony Pictures’ GameStop and WallStreetBets movie, is changing its release plan and will be released in an unusual four-step, platform rollout, which includes a “moderate release” in theaters one week before it goes wide.
The film was meant to open wide from Sony’s Columbia Pictures domestically on September 22 of this year following a Toronto premiere on Sept. 8, but it will now open exclusively in Los Angeles and New York on Sept. 15, then expand to a limited release the week after on Sept. 22, expand again to a “moderate release” on Sept. 29, and finally open wide on October 6.
While you may be wondering about that “moderate release,” a source tells IndieWire “Dumb Money” is expected to open that weekend on somewhere below 600 locations, and the new wide release, which should be on over 2,000 screens, lines it up for a holiday weekend on Indigenous People’s Day. Its TIFF premiere also remains unchanged.

Excuse me while I put my feet up, burn one, and bask in the glow of executives getting screwed over by their own hubris. Why am I lounging? I just watched Sony’s trailer for Dumb Money, the Craig Gillespie-directed comedy-drama retelling the GameStop stock debacle that sent several fat cats to their financial ruin. The Dumb Money red-band trailer features Paul Dano as Keith Gill, the financial analyst who invested his life savings into a failing GameStop stock that eventually made him (and others) a millionaire. Gill’s story is a wild one, filled with twists and turns. Gillespie’s new film explores the YouTube sensation’s story, with both sides incurring blowback from a dangerous numbers game.

Thirteen years ago, Sony released “The Social Network,” an adaptation of Ben Mezrich’s nonfiction book “The Accidental Billionaires” about the rise of Facebook. This September, the studio has once again turned one of Mezirch’s nonfiction books into a sprawling fact-based drama about tech and money. That book, “The Antisocial Network,” has been adapted by writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo into the new film “Dumb Money.”
Directed by Craig Gillespie, “Dumb Money” travels all the way back to 2021 and the Gamestop stock saga that made headlines around the world and shook up the financial industry. Here’s the synopsis for the film provided by Sony:
“‘Dumb Money’ is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything...

There’s no such thing as dumb luck when it comes to good money.
“Dumb Money” is based on Ben Mezrich’s “The Antisocial Network” book, charting the 2021 GameStop short squeeze that changed Wall Street forever. Rebecca Angelo and Lauren Schuker Blum adapted the book. Craig Gillespie directs the feature adaptation, which stars Seth Rogen, Sebastian Stan, Pete Davidson, Paul Dano, Vincent D’Onofrio, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, and Anthony Ramos.
“The Batman” alum Dano stars as real-life YouTuber Keith Gill. Rogen, meanwhile, portrays the head of investment firm Melvin Capital, Gabe Plotkin, who tries to figure out the reason behind his big financial loss.
Rogen told Vanity Fair that the stock market is “purposely convoluted” since it is “designed to keep people out of it.” The fascinating true story behind “Dumb Money” essentially democratized the stock market for the average American.
“The price of entry is understanding this completely bizarre system.
