Exclusive: Producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg’s Stay Gold Features has secured a new round of funding from undisclosed private investors — $10 million that will go toward the in-house development and production of film and TV projects.

This comes on the heels of Stay Gold’s second round funding, another $10M, on which we were first to report in February 2020. Based in New York, Taplin Lundberg launched the company in 2016 with funding from a dozen private investors. She’ll manage Stay Gold Film Fund III alongside L.A.-based head of development Vanessa Mendal, with whom she oversees the entirety of Stay Gold’s slate.

A simple and sweet family dramedy with a competent script, touching themes, and a tremendous lead performance from a likable movie star, Meyers-Shyer's sophomore effort at times feels like it was pulled straight out of 1995. That anchoring performance is, of course, given by the great Michael Keaton. The iconic Beetlejuice and Batman actor is given a difficult task in this film. He has to find a way to engage with — and charm — the audience while playing a very flawed character. Keaton's character, the titular Andy Goodrich, is the type of person that you would be way less forgiving of if he was a real figure in your life, rather than a character being portrayed by a famous actor. The film follows his journey to becoming a better and more attentive father.

Michael Keaton has been on a tear ever since he re-emerged with 2014's "Birdman." While not everything the veteran star has done since then has been a hit (told you bringing back Keaton's Batman in "The Flash" was a bad idea) for the most part the actor has proved why he was always one of Hollywood's brightest stars. When he's not demonstrating that he's still got his charmingly idiosyncratic comedic sensibility in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," he's reminding us all of his razor-sharp dramatic chops in Hulu's opioid epidemic drama "Dopesick."

Keaton’s second theatrical release in as many months was a more gentle and heartwarming comedy about the challenges of parenting and family, and after disappointing at the box office, it has now scored a chart-topping debut on Max.

Goodrich is directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, and focuses on Andy Goodrich, an art dealer who finds himself being put in charge of his nine-year-old twins when his younger wife checks into rehab. Having lost touch with parenting skills, Goodrich is forced to seek help from his daughter from a previous marriage, Grace (Mila Kunis), and together they find out what it means to reconnect with family when things have drifted apart.

Released on October 18, the movie failed to make a mark in theaters, but it scored well with both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Charles Shyer, the director of Father of the Bride and Baby Boom, who formed a successful comedy film-making partnership with his then wife Nancy Meyers, has died aged 83. His family confirmed his death in a statement to Deadline, and his daughter, film-maker Hallie Meyers-Shyer, told the Hollywood Reporter he died in hospital in Los Angeles “after a brief illness”.

Shyer had a hand in a string of successful comedies made over four decades, often in conjunction with Meyers, whom he married in 1980. The son of studio executive Melville Shyer, he cut his teeth as a writer on the TV series The Odd Couple (starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman), before breaking into movies with a writing credit on Smokey and the Bandit.

Review: I love Michael Keaton movies. In the 1980s and 1990s, Keaton was the ubiquitous leading man in everything from comedies and dramas to his game-changing turn in Tim Burton’s Batman. In the early 2000s, Keaton’s roles dried up a bit, aside from voice roles in the Cars and Toy Story franchises. After his awards-worthy role in 2014’s Birdman, Keaton had a resurgence with acclaimed films like The Founder, Spotlight, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to a very different comic book character in Spider-Man: Homecoming. After reprising his Batman role in last year’s The Flash and making his directorial debut with Knox Goes Away, he resurrected his iconic Beetlejuice this year...

Unexpected phone rings received in the middle of the night aren’t usually the bearer of good news. In “Home Again” writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s middling LA-based dramedy “Goodrich,” the title character (played by Michael Keaton) learns it the hard way. A call from his wife wakes Andy Goodrich up in the wee hours, informing this shocked, aloof husband (who hasn’t even noticed that she wasn’t home) that she’s checked into a Malibu rehab for 90 days to address her addiction problem, leaving Andy to care for their 9-year-old twins. Also, she tells him she’ll be leaving him as soon as she’s out.

Affecting with his mournful gaze, expressively arched eyebrows and the signature mystique of his husky voice, an understated Keaton carries this insightful and generously composed opening, proving that the septuagenarian actor is as game for material grounded in earthly concerns as he is...

These days, every time I see a relatable, character-driven comedy about actual human beings I think, “Wow they sure don’t make ’em like this anymore.” It is like a shock to the system that someone managed to get one made and released. It makes me sad since this was once a popular genre with with major studios regularly filled theaters. Now at best it is left to streamers, or an occasional example that somehow sneaks onto a studio release schedule, or, in the case of writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s exceptionally smart and endearing Goodrich, it is being delivered to theaters by an independent (in this case Ketchup Entertainment) and sporting an endless list of “executive producers” (I counted 24 with that title) who put up enough money to get a deserving film on the screen against all odds.

These are the rather mundane inciting incidents of Goodrich, and writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer thankfully doesn’t juice them up with too much schematic plotting. Her second feature is an easygoing character study that’s stripped of the sitcom-y schtick of her first, 2017’s Home Again. At its best, Goodrich makes the canny choice to neither condemn its protagonist as a toxic villain nor redeem him as a good-hearted saint. He’s just Goodrich.

The absolute epitome of what another critic I know refers to as “gas leak cinema,” Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s sweetly deranged “Home Again” — starring Reese Witherspoon as a single mom who invites three cute and aspiring young filmmakers to stay in the guest house of her palatial Brentwood home — is the kind of rom-com that feels like it was made by aliens whose only exposure to our species was an intercepted satellite feed of the Hallmark Channel. The opening scene of Goodrich is as abrupt for us as for its protagonist. Michael Keaton's Andy Goodrich is startled awake by a late-night phone call from his wife, Naomi (Laura Benanti). Warning him not to freak out, she tells him she's checked herself into a 90-day rehab program. His first instinct is to assume she's joking he not only hadn't noticed his wife didn't come home that night, but was completely unaware she was struggling with prescription pills. Suddenly, Naomi's the one blowing up, and she informs Andy that she's also leaving him.

We're unfamiliar with the circumstances of Andy's life at this point, and to a certain extent, so is he.

When Andy Goodrich’s wife, Naomi (Laura Benanti), tells him that she’s checked herself into rehab and plans to leave him, few people are surprised. Everyone knew the mother of his two elementary school-aged children reached for pills at night to lull her to sleep and indulged in extra glasses of wine.

That the news nevertheless shocks Andy, played with an endearing clumsiness by Michael Keaton, speaks more to his own distracted state. The gallerist has never been a present partner or parent, as evidenced by his relationship to his eldest daughter (Mila Kunis) with his first wife (Andie MacDowell). Now that his current union is on the brink of ruin, Andy feels pressure to change.

Goodrich, Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s second feature, observes Andy as he tries to be a better father. The narrative coasts on the familiar beats of this premise, offering only a handful of novel moments along the way.

When Hallie Meyers-Shyer thinks about directors, she thinks about women — women like herself, or like her own mother, Nancy Meyers. When asked about the continued conversation around nepotism in Hollywood — or, more pointedly, the rise of second- and third-generation filmmakers in the current landscape — she thinks about her mother, too.

“I have a different experience than other people, because I think a lot of the people [in this conversation], their fathers are filmmakers,” Meyers-Shyer said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “For me, the benefit was I saw directing my whole life as a woman’s job, and that’s really powerful and unique. Despite the huge success of Damien Leone‘s “Terrifier 3,” Art the Clown will have to deal with the fact there is likely to be an even bigger horror sequel this weekend as Paramount Pictures releases “Smile 2.” It’s the follow-up to the 2022 hit horror movie from filmmaker Parker Finn, which opened with $22.6 million on its way to $105.9 million domestic and $217 million worldwide. It should go without saying that October is the perfect month for a horror release, but oddly, the original “Smile” opened on September 30, then had sustained legs with smaller week-to-week drops. Other horror franchises that have dominated the month of October include the “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” movies, both which saw huge bumps in business with their second chapters.

Goodrich had its L.A. premiere at the AMC The Grove 14, where Michael Keaton, Mila Kunis, and the film stars celebrated its presentation.

The comedy film, written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, stars Keaton as Andy Goodrich, an older art gallery proprietor whose wife suddenly leaves him with their nine-year old twins for a 90-day stint in rehab.

Kunis plays Keaton’s pregnant daughter, Grace Goodrich, whom he turns to for help raising his kids.
