The Action Scene is a column that explores the construction of action set pieces in order to deepen appreciation for and spark discussion about action cinema.“It was clear that Pm weren’t attempting art.” This remark prefaces interviews conducted by the sadly defunct publication Hopes & Fears with various directors and stars who worked with Pm Entertainment, an independent film company that churned out a steady stream of largely direct-to-video movies and television episodes—most famously within the action genre—between the late 1980s and early 2000s. Watching the operatic tour-de-force opening of the Pm film Intent to Kill (1992), however, one might doubt the statement’s accuracy. The extraordinary set piece features squealing tires, spraying glass, and slow-motion gunplay, all against a jet-black sky dotted by the vaporous glow of street lamps. Blue-hued, low-key lighting cuts through night air thick with fog and gun smoke, sustaining a noirish, dreamlike mood...

12 Rounds 3: Lockdown continues the long-running franchise with yet another WWE superstar given the chance to headline. This time round we have Dean Ambrose, a wrestler known for his anarchic, unstable nature who doesn’t play by the rules. And that’s essentially the same character he plays here – only this time his character, Shaw, also happens to be a cop. The only good cop in his precinct it would seem, given just how many men Shaw’s former partner turned nemesis, Burke, brings with him to take on Shaw!
Essentially another Die Hard clone (as were the first two movies), 12 Rounds 3 sees Shaw, following the death of his partner, finally return to active duty.

It’s not that I’m particularly fascinated by a movie about a woman who is stalked by a killer after she takes an ill-advised “shortcut” while driving through New York, it’s just that I’m fascinated how a movie announced in 2007 is just now starting to move into production. Maybe. Word is, “Mutant Chronicles” director Simon Hunter has been hired to bring “Curve” back on track, but there’s no word if Eva Mendes is even still attached to star. Variety says production on “Curve” is expected to commence within six months, with Hunter directing from a script by Kimberly Johnson. When we first talked about the movie in 2007, Eva Mendes was supposed to star. Then in 2008, the film was picked up by Scatter Light Productions, and we still assumed Mendes would star. It’s now 2009, and a director has been attached, replacing Joseph Merhi, who is currently listed on IMDb.

The Art of War director Christian Duguay has signed on to direct The Runelords for Franchise Pictures Story Island Entertainment, Origin Entertainment and Entertainment Business Group. The $80 million project -- the first of three films based on the novels by David Farland -- is scheduled to start principal photography in July in Prague. The project is described as an epic adventure set in the medieval world of Rofehaven. Franchise topper Elie Samaha is executive producing, with the company's Joseph Merhi handling producing chores alongside David Wolverton (who wrote the novels under the pen name David Farland), W. David McBrayer, Richard Shaw and Anne Marie Gillen. Published in 1997, Runelords was the first novel in Farland's series. Duguay has been nominated two times for an Emmy for his work on the small screen for Hitler: The Rise of Evil and Joan of Arc. His feature credits include The Assignment and Screamers.
