Angela Bassett is a force of nature in Hollywood. Her talent, strength, and longevity in an industry known for its fleeting moments of fame speak to her relevance and influence. Her rise as a distinguished African American actress in Hollywood has had an impact on the entertainment industry and the representation of Black talent. Bassett’s breakthrough role came in 1993 when she played Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination. This performance was instrumental in breaking away from the tropes that plagued Black actresses in Hollywood, demonstrating that they could carry films of prestige.
In 1998, Angela Bassett brought the lead character of Stella Payne to life in the film adaptation of Terry McMillan’s novel How Stella Got Her Groove Back. In the first feature film from Kevin Sullivan, Bassett’s portrayal of a successful 40-year-old stockbroker who takes a well-deserved vacation in Jamaica,...

Twenty years ago, Alisa Lynn Valdés released her first novel, "The Dirty Girls Social Club." It was a runaway success, and the writer published 12 more books in its wake. Then she took a 10-year break, coming back with "Hollow Beasts," a suspenseful murder mystery that is out now as an e-book and hitting bookshelves on Apr. 1. The novel introduces us to a new protagonist - rookie game warden and former poetry professor Jodi Luna.
I catch up with Valdés while we hike out to the spot where she originally dreamed up her new novel. Looking back, Valdés isn't sure if writing "The Dirty Girls Social Club" was selling out or not. She styled that first book after what she heard the publishing industry wanted - a Latina Terry McMillan (who wrote beloved titles like "Waiting to Exhale" and "How Stella Got Her Groove Back").

For fans of a specific period of Black cinema, Peacock’s “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” is an epic, end-of-an-era conclusion on par with “Avengers: Endgame.” The specific period spans from roughly 1990 to 2000, when the Black romantic comedy grew into its power. The confluence of two successful movements — Black romantic fiction and Black indie cinema — birthed such classics as “Love Jones,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Love and Basketball,” among others.
Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man” series has grown an outsize influence among Black rom-com aficionados because it has acted as a living history of the subgenre. Its core ensemble — Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun and Melissa DeSousa — is a true murderers’ row of the era. They’ve spent their careers acting together in a raft of films, and Black rom-com fans that don’t count the original “Best Man...

One of the four remaining contestants in Group B of “The Masked Singer” didn’t make the cut in episode 8, which aired on Fox on November 18. The best performer of this bunch is the one disguised as the Serpent. While we can’t see his face, we are sure we know his voice.
The Serpent first performed on September 30 when he rocked the house with his rousing rendition of “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. Two weeks later, he shifted genres and make the country hit “The Bones” by Maren Morris his own.
We are certain that we know the name of the celebrity hiding inside the Serpent costume. A year and a half after then-newly independent network Fox Entertainment launched SideCar Content Accelerator with Gail Berman at the helm, Fox is dissolving the production company. Its slate, which includes 17 projects currently in development, will be folded into the network’s scripted programming department.
SideCar Chairperson Berman will return as full-time CEO of her own banner, The Jackal Group, which operated independently from SideCar. She will remain attached to future Fox projects that originated under SideCar as an executive producer.
The shutdown is believed to be a cost-cutting measure by Fox related to the current financial squeeze experienced by the Hollywood studios and networks amid the Covid-19-related production shutdown and the big contraction in the advertising market.
Fully owned by Fox Entertainment, SideCar was created as al content pipeline for the network, developing and producing/co-producing scripted and unscripted shows, primarily for Fox but also for other networks.

It’s been 20 years since New Line Cinema released Gina Prince-Bythewood’s feature directorial debut, “Love & Basketball,” and the writer-director said that film — now a classic, especially among African American audiences — allowed her a kind of freedom she hasn’t seen since.
Produced by Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and Mule Filmworks, the film starred Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan as Quincy McCall and Monica Wright, childhood friends who fall in love as adults and share another all-consuming passion: basketball. Told largely from Monica’s perspective, this career-versus-love story continues to resonate.

Exclusive: Lionsgate has acquired action comedy The Spoils, a pitch for Malcolm D. Lee to produce through Blackmaled Productions. The screenplay will be written by Roshan Sethi and Hayley Schore.
The plot revolves around a group of disparate immigrants who realize the London Museum holds their countries’ most prized possessions. They plan an elaborate heist to recover the stolen artifacts and return them to their rightful homes. Both Sethi and Schore wrote The Resident for Fox and Code Black for TBS. Schore also wrote The Black Box for ABC.
The scribes recently were also tapped by Universal/Working Title and Chadwick Boseman to write the true story of astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi, based on his upcoming autobiography. Sethi and Schore had two scripts on the Black List in 2017 and currently have several feature films in development — including the Rosalind Franklin drama Exposure and Call Jane, which is set in the pre-Roe v Wade abortion rights movement.

“How Stella Got Her Groove Back”:
“How Stella Got Her Groove Back” turns 20 this month, on Aug 14. The film, adapted from Terry McMillan’s best-selling novel, introduced the film community to Taye Diggs, then a broadway actor known for “Rent.” The film also gave Angela Bassett one of the defining roles of her career. Her Stella character is an overworked single mom in need of a vacation and some romance, so best friend Whoopi Goldberg takes her to Jamaica, where she meets and falls in love with Winston Shakespeare (Diggs), a man 20-years her junior. RollingStone critic Peter Travers said of the film: “Whether you regard Stella’s getting her groove back as a feminist battle cry or as a silly wish-fulfillment fantasy, the movie delivers guilt-free escapism about pretty people having wicked-hot fun in pretty places.”

Refresh for updates… Waiting to Exhale author Terry McMillan was one of the first celebrities to respond to the news that Bill Cosby has been found guilty of sexual assault, and if her tweet is any indication, few will shed tears for the defeated comedian.
“Hallelujah,” McMillan tweeted. “It’s about damn time…And I hope Stormy wins and all the other women break those Nda’s so all of these bastards fall down.
See all tweets below.
Andy Lassner, the exec producer of The Ellen Show, offered a simple: “Thank God.”
Deadline will post other reactions as they roll in.

Over the course of film history, we've seen plenty of long-time actors step behind the camera to take up their directorial ambitions. Clint Eastwood did it. Mel Gibson did it. George Clooney did it. What do these three have in commonc Well, for starters, they are all men, so there's that. Further, they are all white, but more on that later. More to the point of the article, these men all eased into their directorial careers by starring in their respective debuts, using their presence on screen to help market their talents off it. And with his feature directorial effort The Water Diviner, which hits limited theaters this week, Russell Crowe is just the most recent addition to a growing list of actors who have decided to try their hand behind the camera. Like Eastwood, Gibson, and Clooney before him, the Best Actor winner stars in his first feature as director,...

Author Terry McMillan was in her late 40s when she married 23-year-old Jamaican Jonathan Plummer in 1998. He was even the love interest inspiration for her bestselling novel, How Stella Got her Groove Back. But the two had a very public and very nasty breakup when Plummer told his wife in 2004 that he was gay. What followed was an ugly divorce, several years of public recriminations, a lawsuit and an obvious bitterness emanating from McMillan– bitterness that seemed to extend beyond Plummer and apply to the gay community at large.
Well, it’s nice to see that McMillan has mellowed quite a bit and has let go of a lot of the anger she once carried.

The coming of age genre in filmmaking is one of the most celebrated, and can be one of the most isolating in terms of representation.
