- Known as much for being injury-prone and clashing with Bears then-head coach Mike Ditka than for his quarterbacking ability during his NFL days.
- Wore headbands under his helmet. Once wore a headband with the name "Rozelle" written on his forehead to irk then-NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, who fined him for wearing a Adidas headband with the Adidas name and logo clearly showing, which is prohibited. McMahon had an endorsement contract with Adidas at the time.
- His "wild-eyed appearance" was due to an accident at 6 years of age. He was trying to untie a knot in a toy gun holster with a fork when it slipped and severed his left eye. The injury left his eyes extremely sensitive to light and he had to wear dark glasses or sunglasses for medical reasons. Wore contact lenses while playing.
