A couple beloved “Star Trek” shows are living ever longer and prospering on Paramount+. The streamer has renewed “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for Season 4 — even though Season 3 hasn’t even aired yet. That’s how well received the first two seasons of the “Original Series” prequel starring Anson Mount as Capt. Christopher Pike have been. The series has taken big swings in episodic storytelling, such as Season 2’s musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody.”
“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, plus franchise overlord Alex Kurtzman, in a joint statement. “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.
“Strange New Worlds” — set in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) commanded the USS Enterprise, and featuring younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) and Kirk (Paul Wesley) — has been a fan favorite since it premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Season 7 of “Rick and Morty” is the first volume of the Adult Swim animated sitcom, a “Back to the Future” riff tracking the adventures of a mad scientist and his bumbling grandson, not to star co-creator Justin Roiland as the voice of both title characters. The network fired Roiland in January after the actor was charged with domestic violence; though the charges have since been dropped, an NBC News report last month alleged a pattern of inappropriate sexual conduct. In between, the roles of Rick and Morty were recast with soundalikes Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden, a monthslong saga that culminated with the debut of a Roiland-free show on Sunday.
All this behind-the-scenes upheaval might suggest “Rick and Morty” would return a markedly different show. But “How Poopy Got His Poop Back” is almost pointedly normal, collecting various fixtures of the “Rick and Morty” universe — not just Rick and Morty themselves,...

There was a time, not too long ago, when there were six "Star Trek" shows running simultaneously. When Paramount launched CBS All Access (now Paramount+) in 2017, the company put all its eggs into one basket, sextupling down one of their most lucrative entertainment franchises. First, there was "Star Trek: Discovery," a prequel to the original 1966 series. To keep viewers subscribed in between seasons, the studio launched "Short Treks" in 2018. In 2020, fans of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" were granted the follow-up show "Star Trek: Picard." That year also saw the debut of the self-effacing animated comedy series "Star Trek: Lower Decks." 2021 brought the kid-friendly, Nickelodeon animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy," and the "Discovery" spinoff "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" started up in 2023.
In recent months, however, "Star Trek" has contracted considerably. "Short Treks" has changed into "Very Short Treks," "Picard" came to an end, and "Prodigy" was notoriously canceled. "Discovery...

Over the course of four seasons, “Star Trek” animated series “Lower Decks” has seen its crew of lowly officers take on the worst jobs in all of Starfleet, the type of menial work that only those at the very bottom of the chain of command are asked to do. But in the show’s upcoming episode, the core four characters get an assignment that promises much nicer pleasures: a glorified bar crawl.
“Parth Ferengi’s Heart Place,” the sixth episode of “Lower Decks” ongoing fourth season, sees junior lieutenant’s Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Tendi (Noël Wells) assigned to Starfleet’s “Travel Guide Duty.” In a clip exclusively shared with IndieWire from the episode, directed by Brandon Williams with a script by Cullen Crawford, their superior first officer Jack Ransom (voiced by Jerry O’Connell) explains that the job, one of Starfleet’s most coveted,...

At the beginning of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) were all promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade. This meant that each of them now had the ability to give orders to the remaining ensigns on the U.S.S. Cerritos and were afforded the privilege of private quarters. As ensigns, they had to sleep on bunks in a hallway and keep all their personal belongings inside tiny, drawer-like dressers embedded in the wall. There was no privacy. For the first time in their professional Starfleet careers, the four lead characters would be able to close a door behind them at the end of their shift.
But, in keeping with the spirit of the show, this isn't necessarily a net positive. In the episode "I Have No Bones, Yet I Must Flee," Boimler finds that...

This post contains spoilers for Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Since its very first episode, Star Trek: Lower Decks has excavated the most embarrassing parts of Star Trek lore, refusing to let even tangential parts of the franchise go forgotten. The Next Generation‘s second-worst enemy race the Pakleds became major antagonists in Lower Decks, and Boimler showed unironic appreciation for a Tom Paris commemorative plate. Heck, even the Space Fun Helmet made a brief appearance.
So it’s no surprise that Lower Decks would eventually get around to one of the great debates in Star Trek history: how do you solve a problem like Tuvix? Directed by Cliff Bole, the Voyager season two episode “Tuvix” used that old Trek standby, a transporter accident, to pose a knotty moral quandary. When an exotic plant disrupts the transporter beam carrying Vulcan security chief Tuvok and Talaxian guide/cook Neelix, the two combine into one being,...

If you have ever watched Star Trek, you already know what the Prime Directive is. General Order One. As Kirk describes it in The Original Series episode, “Bread and Circuses,” the order decrees Starfleet crews should make “No identification of self or mission; no interference with the social development of said planet; no references to space, other worlds, or advanced civilizations.”
Of course, there’s a bit more to it than that. According to one episode of Voyager, the Prime Directive contains 47 sub-orders, including more than a few loopholes that have been exploited over the years, but the gist of it is, if a civilization has not yet developed warp travel, Starfleet is to treat their planet like a nature reserve, to be observed but never interfered with.
“I think of the Prime Directive as having two components,” says Robin Wasserman, who has written two episodes of Strange New Worlds.

When Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered in the summer of 2020 — so long ago that its streaming home at the time was called CBS All Access, rather than Paramount+ — it seemed caught between two potentially incompatible goals. On the one hand, the animated series, run by Mike McMahan, wanted to satirize all of the most ridiculous ideas the Star Trek franchise had introduced since the mid-20th century. And on the other, it wanted to tell genuine, thrilling Star Trek stories, set a decade or so after the events of the various Nineties spinoffs.

As many recent storylines of movies and TV shows explore the concept of the “multiverse”, a new exclusive clip from the Hulu original sci-fi comedy, Solar Opposites, explores what is called “the stockiverse.” The stockiverse is revealed to be a universe in which people get placed into a universe of stock photos. Korvo accidentally traps Jesse in the stockiverse and must enter the posed-photo world to retrieve her.

A team of four aliens escape their exploding home world only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love humans and all their TV, junk food and fun stuff. Hulu has released the official Solar Opposites season 4 trailer. The animated sci-fi comedy was created by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, and if I’m being honest with myself… I might love it more than Rick and Morty.
You might have noticed that Korvo is sounding a little different in the Solar Opposites season 4 trailer, and that’s because Hulu replaced previous voice actor Justin Roiland with Dan Stevens. The streaming service axed Roiland after he had been charged with felony domestic abuse, but those charges were dismissed in March. “This case was dismissed as a result of insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” said Orange County District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Kimberly Edds.
Justin Roiland took to social media to comment on the charges against him being dismissed. “I have always known that these claims were false — and I never had any doubt that this day would come,...

This post contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
If you're not a regular "Star Trek: Lower Decks" viewer, the latest episode of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" might be a little jarring. The crossover episode features the animated series' leads, Ensigns Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Mariner (Tawny Newsome), making the leap to live-action when they accidentally time travel to the classic Trek era. While it's easy to pick up on the plot even if you haven't seen "Lower Decks," there's one aspect of the characters that's a little tougher to get used to: their mile-a-minute references and jokes.
"Star Trek: Lower Decks" has always been known for its speedy quips and chaotic energy, and the crossover episode knows it. In a quick exchange (is there any other way for these folks?) on board the Enterprise, Mariner asks Boimler, "Did you notice how slow everybody talks?...

“Solar Opposites” may feature a new voice in its core lineup, but it’s just as ridiculous as ever. The Season 4 trailer teases more of the shenanigans the series is known for, this time with Dan Stevens replacing Justin Roiland as the voice of Korvo. The animated comedy returns Aug. 14.
After briefly addressing Korvo being hit with a “voice fixing ray,” the trailer skips along to business as usual for Hulu’s animated comedy. Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Korvo (Stevens) almost kill their baby-like charge, the Pupa, by leaving him in a hot car. Jesse (Mary Mack) adds more shrunken humans to her wall collection. Terry turns into a human, complete with a butthole. If all of this sounds insane, that’s the vibe.
In January, 20th Century Animation and Hulu Originals confirmed Justin Roiland would be removed from “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” and that both series would continue without his involvement.

Hulu’s Solar Opposites will sound different when it returns for its fourth season. Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland, who voiced Korvo for three seasons, is out. The new season finds the grumpy alien has adopted a distinctly British accent, thanks to Dan Stevens stepping in and taking over the voice role. And the just-released trailer provides our first real look at/listen to the major shift.
In addition to Dan Stevens, season four features Thomas Middleditch back as Terry, Sean Giambrone reprising his role as Yumyulack, and Mary Mack returning as Jesse. Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel serve as executive producers.
The upcoming season will consist of 11 episodes and is set to premiere on August 14, 2023. Hulu’s aiming at a 2024 premiere for a Valentine’s Day special.

Season 3 will follow Charles (Martin), Oliver (Short) and Mabel (Gomez) as they dig deeper into a murder that takes place behind the scenes of a Broadway show. Earlier this year, animation superstar Justin Roiland was fired by the animated Hulu series “Solar Opposites” that he co-created after he faced a series of allegations of domestic violence and disturbing workplace and online actions. Roiland denied the allegations and the domestic violence charges were later dropped.
While Roiland co-wrote the “Solar Opposites” pilot with showrunner Mike McMahan, he did not have a writing credit since, but served the very recognizable voice of Korvo, the perennially ticked-off lead character. The series announced that they would find a way forward, and, given the goofy science fiction premise of the series, they have done so in a way that is in sync with the vibe of the series.
Dan Stevens and his crisp British accent will voice the exiled, sociopathic schlorpian in the show’s fourth season, which debuts in August.

Solar Opposites co-creator Justin Roiland is out and Dan Stevens is in as the voice of the grumpy, Earth-loathing alien Korvo. Hulu announced the change two months out from the planned launch of season four, with Stevens committed to handling the voice of Korvo for both season four and season five.
For those pointing out that Dan Stevens sounds nothing like Justin Roiland, the upcoming season acknowledges that in a very Solar Opposite-y way. Hulu’s nearly two-minute sneak peek of season four reveals just how Korvo comes to suddenly speak with a very British accent.
Dan Stevens joins a voice cast that includes Thomas Middleditch as Terry, Sean Giambrone as Yumyulack, and Mary Mack as Jesse. Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel serve as executive producers.

When it was revealed that Hulu would be recasting the voice of Korvo on Solar Opposites after firing Justin Roiland, I think fans assumed that the replacement might sound similar… but Hulu is going in a very different direction. THR announced today that Dan Stevens, yes, that Dan Stevens, has been tapped to voice Korvo on Solar Opposites.
Hulu also released a Solar Opposites first-look video of Dan Stevens in the role, which includes a rather simple explanation of why Korvo’s voice is so different.
Solar Opposites was created by Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan and centers around a group of aliens who crash land in suburban America after fleeing their exploding home world. In between adjusting to life on Earth, Korvo (originally voiced by Justin Roiland and now voiced by Dan Stevens), Terry (Thomas Middleditch), Jesse (Mary Mack), and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) must protect Pupa, a living super-computer...

Dan Stevens is voicing Korvo in the upcoming fourth season of Hulu’s adult animated series Solar Opposites. He is taking on the role from series creator Justin Roiland who exited in January when Hulu Originals and Solar Opposites studio 20th Television Animation severed ties with the writer-producer-performer after he had been accused of domestic violence.
Korvo is a grouchy alien who always wears ceremonial robes and professes to hate Earth. He desperately wants to fix their spaceship so he can escape to a new planet.
In the cast, Stevens joins Thomas Middleditch, Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack.
Season 4 of Solar Opposites will premiere on August 14, 2023 on Hulu with 11 episodes followed by a Valentine’s Day special coming in 2024. Watch a first-look video below. The series already has been renewed through Season 5.

Non-Trekkies approaching "Star Trek" for the first time may find themselves a little frustrated by the franchise's tendency to swap out uniforms. One might wonder, for instance, why Captain Kirk (William Shatner) wore a golden uniform in the original "Star Trek" while Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) wore a red one in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." It seemed that, at some point, operations officers and command officers swapped colors for no adequately explained reason. Also, why did Starfleet return to the primary-color uniforms after the jacket-like, high-collared uniforms of the "Star Trek" movies?
The color swap may finally be addressed in an upcoming crossover special between "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," a live-action show, and "Star Trek: Lower Decks," an animated one. The former show is set immediately before the events of the original "Star Trek," when captains were still wearing gold. The latter takes place shortly after the end...

This year’s Best Actress winner at the Academy Awards, Michelle Yeoh, has announced the first project of her post-Oscar career. “Rick and Morty” is expected to fulfill its 70-episode order despite Adult Swim’s recent decision to cut ties with creator Justin Roiland, who has been charged with felony domestic violence related to an incident that first surfaced in a January 2020 criminal complaint.
An individual with knowledge of the matter told TheWrap that Roiland has been less involved in the series in recent years, but affirmed that not only is “Rick and Morty” moving forward, the series also is not expected to cut short its expansive episode order. There are 40 episodes left to produce and air from the initial 70-episode order.
Roiland has voiced both titular characters since the series premiered back in 2013, though the source noted that those roles will be recast moving forward.
In January, Adult Swim confirmed that the cast and crew are hard at work on the long-running adult-animated comedy’s seventh season. In an interview...

The complete and utter implosion of Justin Roiland's massively successful animation career continues to be one of 2023's most shocking stories. The co-creator of "Rick and Morty" (with Dan Harmon) and "Solar Opposites" (with Mike McMahan), and executive producer of the just-debuted "Koala Man" was viewed admirably by his many fans as a subversive visionary. His shows are dark and painfully funny, but, deep down good-hearted. His characters are screw-ups scrambling to make sense of a world gone mad. They're misfits with whom disillusioned viewers could relate. If it came out that Roiland was spending as many hours in therapy as he was in the writers' room, no one would've been surprised.
But when a January 12 NBC News story revealed that Roiland was facing two felony domestic violence charges brought against him by a woman he was dating in 2020, the entire entertainment industry was left reeling. For fans who'd...

Following Adult Swim’s announcement that it severed ties with “Rick and Morty” creator Justin Roiland, Hulu has followed suit on dropping the disgraced creator from his animated shows on the platform. Roiland has been cut from “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” at the streamer, the company announced January 25.
“We have ended our association with Justin Roiland,” 20th TV Animation and Hulu Originals said in a statement to IndieWire. Before the announcement, Roiland had an overall deal with 20th TV Animation to develop new animated projects for the studio.
Both shows are expected to continue without Roiland’s involvement, similar to “Rick and Morty.” That Adult Swim animated series currently has 40 more episodes ordered at Adult Swim and is expected to recast the two title characters, previously both played by Roiland.
