Mary Beth McDonough charmed TV audiences as Erin Walton on CBS’s hit series The Waltons. She played the character on all nine seasons of the family-friendly drama, as well as in several made-for-tv movies. But there may have been an element of chance in her getting cast in the role of a lifetime.

It’s been decades since CBS’s hit series The Waltons went off the air. But the show about a close-knit family making do during the Depression era still has a loyal fanbase. Just ask Judy Norton, who played Mary Ellen Walton. The actor is used to being approached in public by people who recognize her from TV. While she says that most fans simply want to share their appreciation for The Waltons and her work, a few can be a little over-enthusiastic.

The Waltons is a classic American drama that ran for nine seasons on television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with a number of television specials in the early 1990s. The show helped make some of the actors household names, including Richard Thomas, who played John-Boy Walton.

However, many of the child actors on the show have spoken out in recent years to let the world know that they were not adequately compensated for their work on the show, leading many of them to have a lower net worth than other child actors of the era and find work outside of Hollywood since the end of the series.

Mary McDonough spent her formative years portraying Erin Walton on the popular CBS series The Waltons. After the show ended in 1981, the one-time child actor wanted to transition into more adult roles. But she soon discovered that she wasn’t exactly what casting directors were looking for. In an effort to boost her career, she decided to get breast implants. It was a decision she later came to regret.

During a 1980 appearance on Circus of the Stars, The Waltons actor Mary McDonough traded her conservative 1930s-style dresses for a leotard as she performed an aerial act with Happy Days star Scott Baio. But the high-flying stunt wasn’t an entirely pleasant experience for McDonough, she revealed in her 2011 memoir.

Circus of the Stars was a CBS variety show featuring celebrities performing circus acts. It debuted in 1977 and aired annually until 1994. McDonough – known for playing Erin Walton on The Waltons – was recruited to appear on the fifth edition of the show. She and Baio performed an aerial act called “Pirates in the Sky.”
For McDonough, who had a background in dance, the chance to do circus stunts on TV was a dream come true.

My love of horror films dates back forty years. In the fall of 1986, I accidentally stumbled across an aficionado’s bonanza – a local video store had hundreds of video posters in the cabinets underneath the movies it was renting. One of the posters was for Mortuary (1983), a horror film from the Vestron Video label that I knew of from another video store but had not seen. I liked the poster art but knew nothing of the film. To my recollection, it never played at area theaters, not even the 2-screen indoor/drive-in three miles from me that showed just about anything that was low-budget and esoteric.
Mortuary opened on Friday, September 2, 1983 in Los Angeles and is not a great movie, but it is not terrible, either. It does, however, move at a snail’s pace, so be forewarned if you have not seen it.

A full moon glides into view, as a narrator insidiously intones the terrors of the dark. A gravedigger is toiling away by the moonlight until a hand comes from the ground and pulls him screaming into the open grave. This was the trailer for Mortuary (1983), and I remember it scaring the piss out of me when it would show up on late night TV. It also has nothing to do with the film whatsoever, and yet exemplifies the oddball spirit that permeates every frame; Mortuary is at least two in one, and both are askew and delightful.

By the early ‘80s, Melissa Sue Anderson was ready to get some dirt under Mary Ingall’s fingernails, and shed her squeaky clean image. Late in ’81 she would entertain horror audiences with her big screen turn in Happy Birthday to Me, but earlier that same year she stayed closer to home on the tube playing a big bad teenage witch in Midnight Offerings – a role which I’m sure Pa Ingalls would not approve of.

Fans of the 1970s television drama The Waltons were saddened to learn of the passing of Ralph Waite on Thursday at age 85. For nine seasons the actor played John Walton, Sr., a father of seven struggling to make ends meet during the Great Depression and World War II.
"[Fans] tell me that I was their surrogate father, the one who brought them up," Waite told Entertainment Weekly last year.
Indeed, Waite's honest portrayal struck a chord with audiences around the world, and left a big impression on actor Richard Thomas, who played eldest son John-Boy on the series.

When the current theatrical reboot (a sequel and toothless TV remake had already come and gone) of Carrie was announced, there was a lot of teeth gnashing and cries of "leave the classics alone!," mostly by me. But as details began to leak out, the prospect became more intriguing. Gay director Kimberly Pierce gave us the masterpiece Boys Don't Cry, and the fabulous Julianne Moore signed up to play Carrie's psychotic fanatical mother. Chloe Moretz doesn't look anything like Stephen King's Carrie, but then neither did Sissy Spacek, so I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt.
Carrie was supposed to open in March, but the studio has pushed it back to October, which means they're either hoping for Halloween dollars ... or it's a sign of a troubled production.
But while we wait to rain judgment down on the new version of our favorite telekinetic teen, let's take...

On May 15th, Scorpion Releasing, in conjunction with Camelot Entertainment, presents Mortuary.
Bill Paxton, Christopher George, and Lynda Day George star in this tale of horror-filled nightmares that comes startlingly close to reality.
Christie Parson (Mary McDonough) has been having terrifying nightmares ever since her father drowned in the family swimming pool. She knows his death was not an accident, but no one believes her. That is, until her boyfriend Greg (David Wallace) sees a hooded figure, identical to the one that Christie has described as being in her nightmares, in the town's mortuary. But is it real, or is it all in Christie's mind?

Back in the Eighties some cool cover art was all we needed to get us to rent a VHS tape and run home excited. True, more often than not the artwork was not at all reflective of the content, but we still didn't regret it. In fact, I remember renting Mortuary dozens of times for the box art alone.

Chicago – This year marked the 40th anniversary of the premiere of “The Waltons,” one of the most beloved TV series of the 1970s. Two actresses who portrayed Mary Ellen and Erin Walton, Mary McDonough and Judy Norton, appeared at the “Hollywood Celebrities & Memorabilia Show,” along with Pamela Sue Martin of TV’s “The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries’ (1977).
HollywoodChicago.com was at the event to interview all three ‘70s icons, with photographer Joe Arce producing his usual stellar portraiture.
Judy Norton, Mary Ellen Walton on “The Waltons”
Judy Norton was memorable as Mary Ellen Walton, adding a little passion to the often saccharine image of the TV family. She also gained a bit of notoriety after the series ended by posing for Playboy in the mid-1980s. She is still working in the business, as an actress, singer, writer and director. She recently appeared on the “Today” show, reuniting with...

What's the holiday season without warm family reunions?
One of TV's most famous families, the Waltons, got together on "The Today Show" on Friday, three decades after their show went off the air. As a poor family in Virginia struggling during the Great Depression, the cast warmed hearts and touched on historial issues, winning 12 Emmys and leaving a legacy of period drama that can be plainly seen on TV today.
Just as they were one big, happy family on the show, they were the same way during the reunion. Michael Learned, who played Ma, told Matt Lauer that, "We get giddy, we love each other" when asked about their reunion. The remaining cast -- David Harper (Jim Bob), Judy Norton (Mary Ellen), Kami Cotler (Elizabeth), Jon Walmsley (Jason), Mary Elizabeth McDonough (Erin), Eric Scott (Ben), and Richard Thomas (John-Boy) all agreed.

If you're a child of the '70s, you'll remember "The Waltons" as the sometimes corny TV series that coined the phrase "Good night, John Boy." It was, of course, a reference to the show's folksy ending each week -- the camera would pan away from a farm house as lights went out and the titular Waltons would all say good night to each other in turn.
On Friday (Dec. 2), several "Waltons" cast members -- including Kami Cotler (Elizabeth), Jon Walmsley (Jason), David Harper (Jim Bob), Eric Scott (Ben), Michael Learned (Olivia, aka "Ma"), Richard Thomas (John Boy), Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) and Mary Elizabeth McDonough (Erin) -- reunited on "Today" to talk to Matt Lauer about the show's 40th anniversary.
The actors talked about their lifelong friendships and why no one from the show never wrote a tell-all book,...

Our national obsession with oversized TV families isn’t a recent reality-show phenomenon. Forty years ago, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, and The Waltons were each prime-time hits, and eight members of the cast from the latter visited with Matt Lauer this morning on Today. For youngins who scrunched their nose when Today ran video clips of the show, which ran for nine seasons beginning in 1971, The Waltons was an extremely earnest drama about a western Virginian family struggling through the Great Depression and World War II. Is it dated? “It was dated when we did it!” interjected one of the cast,...

The Waltons star Mary McDonough stunned guests at her 50th birthday party on 4 June by turning the bash into a wedding.
The actress, who played Waltons sister Erin in the beloved family TV drama, shut down Italian restaurant Maggio's in Los Angeles for the party, which she told family and friends was a belated birthday get together.
But once all the guests were seated, McDonough's longtime partner Don Couch proposed to the actress and the couple wed on the spot.
U.S. tabloid the Globe reports McDonough's brothers acted as ushers for Couch, while her 18-year-old daughter, Sydnee, and her stepdaughters-to-be served as bridesmaids.
A source tells the publication, "It was a beautiful ceremony... There were many tears of joy... Mary has never been happier."...

Veteran TV actress Mary McDonough has warned women about the dangers of breast implants, because she's convinced her boob job caused her a decade of health problems.
The former The Waltons child star, now 49, admits she struggled to find work once the beloved TV show ended and was constantly told her flat chest was the reason why.
She tells the National Enquirer, "I kept hearing, 'You're losing this part or that part because you don't have big boobs!' So I thought, 'Well I can get big boobs!'"
The TV star underwent plastic surgery to enhance her chest - but began developing a variety of health problems shortly afterwards.
She says, "I started to have a physical reaction within 24 hours of having them done. I broke out in a huge rash, and, over the course of 10 years, things got worse. I had constant fevers and other flu-like symptoms. I had fibromyalgia (muscle and tissue pain) and my hair started to fall out."
The star's condition got so bad she decided to have the implants removed in 1994.
She says, "I wanted to let other women and young girls know it's not about how you look, it's about how you feel, it's about what you are feeling inside that's important."...

If you’re like I was a week ago, you’re not at all familiar with the television show The Waltons. To give you some perspective on the show, George H.W. Bush once famously said, "we are going to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons," which should give you a pretty good idea of the show’s target audience. In the 1970s and early 1980s it ran for nine seasons, of which this is the last.
The show follows the trials and tribulations of a rural family living outside Charlottesville, Virginia during the Great Depression and World War II. They are led by patriarch John Walton, Sr, (Ralph Waite), who raises the children with a sage and steady hand (there was a mother, Olivia Walton, played by Michael Learned, but she...

For nine seasons on CBS, The Waltons was a part of a weekly tradition for television viewers. It was a staple of Thursday nights for so long that many were a little lost when it finally went off the air in 1981.
Based on Spencer's Mountain by Earl Hamner Jr. and a 1963 Henry Fonda movie of the same name, The Waltons revolves around a large family living in rural Virginia. The family, living on Walton's Mountain, is played by Ralph Waite, Michael Learned, Will Geer, Ellen Corby, Richard Thomas, Jon Walmsley, Mary Beth McDonough, Eric Scott, Judy Norton-Taylor, David W. Harper, and Kami Cotler.
The mountain setting is also home to several other townspeople played by Mary Jackson, Helen Kleeb, Joe Conley, Ronnie Claire Edwards, Lynn Hamilton, and Robert Donner.
