Jason Universe gets a new logo to celebrate the 45th anniversary of Friday the 13th
Image
Today – May 9, 2025 – marks the 45th anniversary of the release of one of the most popular horror movies ever made, Friday the 13th. The movie that launched my favorite franchise, and one that I feel is underrated, as it’s a great film that often gets overshadowed by its sequels. Last year, the Friday the 13th franchise rights holders at Horror Inc. announced that they were launching the Jason Universe, which would encompass “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.” Now, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the original film, Jason Universe has unveiled their new logo in a video that can be seen at the bottom of this article.

As fans know, the Friday the 13th franchise was recently bogged down...

Image
It’s a big day for Friday the 13th fans!

Today marks the 45th anniversary of writer Victor Miller and director Sean S. Cunningham‘s 1980 slasher hit arriving in theaters. Horror Inc. is celebrating accordingly with a new Jason Universe logo honoring the franchise’s legacy, which we can exclusively unveil.

The 45th anniversary Jason Universe logo makes its debut below along with a new motion logo video featuring a new Jason mask and original audio composed exclusively for this video by Harry Manfredini, composer of the majority of the Friday the 13th movies and Friday the 13th: The Game.

Alongside the new Jason Voorhees mask, the logo text sports an appropriate “machete metal” finish.

What is Jason Universe? The short answer is that it’s a multi-platform expansion, first announced a year ago as the “new era from the original owners of the Friday the 13th franchise.” With signs...

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (Welcome to Derry) has now announced that production is underway on Friday The 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, which is set to star Linda Cardellini as Jason's mother. This take on Pamela Voorhees is described as "a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child and takes a dark turn when she loses her son."

Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Sexta-Feira 13 (1980)
On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin last July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. Things got back on track in late August with the hiring of a new showrunner – and that person is Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry,...

Image
Grab your bags and make sure you grab something strong enough to hold off a machete — Crystal Lake has finally begun production. That’s right, the very first series spin-off of the Friday the 13th franchise has cameras picked up and ready to roll, with series showrunner, Brad Caleb Kane, taking to his social media to share the wonderful yet horrific news.

In an Instagram post captioned “Crystal Lake Production offices are live. It’s all happening. MacHetes For Everyone!” Kane shared an image of a desk filled with Friday the 13th-themed material. On the right is a folder that features a sticker of the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, while next to it sits a script for presumably the pilot. Written on the script, we can see the production company, A24, scrawled across in large letters, while Kane’s name is listed as the scribe. The script also gives credit to Victor Miller,...

Tremors novelization to be written by Christian Francis
Kevin Bacon, Finn Carter, and Fred Ward in O Ataque dos Vermes Malditos (1990)
In the early 1980s, writer S.S. Wilson was climbing over large boulders in the Mojave Desert when the thought occurred to him, “What if something was under the ground and I couldn’t get off this rock?” That thought would eventually grow into the story for one of the greatest creature features ever made, Tremors (watch it Here), which was directed by Ron Underwood from a screenplay Wilson wrote with Brent Maddock. That movie, released by Universal in 1990, introduced viewers to the subterranean monsters known as Graboids and spawned a franchise that has – so far – consisted of six direct-to-video sequels and a TV series that ran for thirteen episodes back in 2003. Wilson, Maddock, and their production company Stampede Entertainment were behind the first four movies and the TV show, and they had written a script for Tremors 5… but Universal kept the script on a shelf for several years, and when...

Linda Cardellini Signs on to Slay in ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel
Image
Peacock’s upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake has taken a major step forward, with Emmy-nominated actor Linda Cardellini confirmed to play one of horror’s most iconic maternal figures: Pamela Voorhees. The series, developed by A24 and helmed by Brad Caleb Kane, is shrouded in secrecy, though casting Cardellini suggests a significant exploration of Jason Voorhees’ twisted origin story through the eyes of the woman who started it all.

First appearing in Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 Friday the 13th, Pamela Voorhees carved her place into horror history by committing a bloody string of murders in retaliation for her son Jason’s apparent drowning at Camp Crystal Lake. In a bold twist that challenged expectations at the time, the original film revealed her—not Jason—as the killer. The image of a grief-stricken mother driven to homicidal madness has since become a defining element of the franchise’s enduring mythos.

Image
On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service… but things have turned out to be more complicated than expected. First, the lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show, then Fuller got the boot and was replaced. It remains to be seen when Crystal Lake will be going into production, but we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!

First Showrunner

As mentioned, Bryan Fuller was steering this ship when it was first announced, and it nearly started filming with him (and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray) at the helm. Production was set to begin on July 22, 2024, with filming to last for seven to eight months. Charlize Theron was being considered for the role of Pamela Voorhees,...

Linda Cardellini Joins 'Friday the 13th' Prequel Series 'Crystal Lake'
Image
Friday the 13th's upcoming prequel series, which is appropriately called Crystal Lake, has been in the works for years now. Peacock originally ordered the project back in 2022 when Bryan Fuller was still attached as its creator, but Brad Caleb Kane took hold of the baton in August 2024 and replaced Fuller as the creator, showrunner, and writer. Today, casting the role of the younger version of the hockey-masked murderer’s mother is the first major piece of news to break in quite some time, and it’s now official that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s own Linda Cardellini will portray the killer part of Pamela Voorhees.

Cardellini goes from playing the wife (Laura Barton) of Hawkeye, a.k.a. Clint Barton, in the MCU to portraying the peculiar parent of Camp Blood’s serial-killing mama’s boy, Jason Voorhees. Currently, there aren’t any plot details to reveal about the project,...

Things are finally getting somewhere regarding the highly anticipated Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake. While there have been several updates since the show's announcement in 2022, there was one really big update back in May 2024 that wasn't what fans were expecting. With the firing of the original series creator, Bryan Fuller, people were left uncertain about the direction the series would take. Then, three months later, Brad Caleb Kane was brought on to the project as the new creator, showrunner, and executive producer. Now, we've just learned of a new cast addition.

A beloved actress has joined the prequel series, playing an iconic role from the 1980 slasher. This talented star is in no way new to the horror world, having starred in a few horror projects in the past. It's none other than Emmy-nominated actress Linda Cardellini. You might recognize her from the horror flicks Strangeland, Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed...

After early reports that Peacock’s Friday the 13th prequel series “Crystal Lake” from A24 may have found its Mrs. Voorhees last month, it’s now official: Linda Cardellini has officially signed on to star, Deadline reports today.

The series’ version of Pamela Voorhees is “believed to be a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child and takes a dark turn when she loses her son.”

Betsy Palmer played Mrs. Voorhees in the original film, revealed to be the killer behind the camp counselor slayings in retaliation for the drowning of her son, Jason.

Linda Cardellini Steps into Pamela Voorhees’ Shoes for ‘Crystal Lake’ Prequel
Image
Big news for horror lovers—we’ve got a familiar face joining the ‘Friday the 13th’ world. According to Variety, Linda Cardellini, known for her standout roles across TV and film, is taking on the part of Pamela Voorhees in Peacock’s upcoming series ‘Crystal Lake.’ This prequel dives into the story before Jason Voorhees became the machete-swinging killer we all recognize, and I’m already excited to see how it unfolds.

Pamela Voorhees isn’t just a side character here. If you’ve seen the original 1980 ‘Friday the 13th’ movie, you know she’s the one behind the bloody rampage at Camp Crystal Lake. Driven by grief over her son Jason’s drowning, she takes out her anger on the counselors she blames.

That film, made on a tiny budget of $550,000, raked in close to $60 million at the box office, kicking off a franchise that’s given us eleven more movies,...

‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series ‘Crystal Lake’ Casts Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees
Linda Cardellini
Linda Cardellini is set for the lead role in the “Friday the 13th” prequel series at Peacock, Variety has learned.

Cardellini will star as Pamela Voorhees in the expanded prequel series, which is titled “Crystal Lake.” The show was originally picked up straight to series at Peacock in 2022.

Fans of the “Friday the 13th” franchise will recall that Pamela Voorhees was the mother of Jason Voorhees, the hockey mask-wearing slasher featured throughout most of the films in the horror franchise. But in the original film, Jason is a child who drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. His death leads his mother, Pamela, to seek revenge against the counselors she blamed for her son’s death.

Cardellini was recently cast in a lead role in the upcoming HBO series “Dtf St. Louis” alongside David Harbour and Jason Bateman. She is a three-time Emmy nominee — one for “Mad Men” and two for “Dead to Me.

Linda Cardellini to Lead ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel ‘Crystal Lake’ at Peacock
Image
Peacock and A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series has found its lead actress.

Linda Cardellini will star in Crystal Lake, a drama set before the events that kicked off the slasher franchise. She’ll play Pamela Voorhees, the mother of the unkillable killer Jason Voorhees (and the person responsible for the murders in the original 1980 film). Plot details are being kept quiet for now.

Crystal Lake has been in the works for some time. Peacock ordered the series in 2022, with Bryan Fuller initially attached as writer and showrunner. Fuller eventually left the project, confirming his exit in May 2024 and saying that A24 “decided to go a different way with the material.”

Brad Caleb Kane (Max’s It: Welcome to Derry) joined the series in August and is credited as creator, writer and showrunner, suggesting that the material Fuller and other writers worked on won’t be used. “Nothing defined...

Peacock has found its Pamela Voorhees for the highly anticipated “Friday the 13th” prequel series, “Crystal Lake.” Linda Cardellini will play Jason Voorhees mom in the A24 original.

She also worked with Feldman on Netflix’s “No Good Dead,” and is also known for her work on “Bloodline,” “Mad Men” and “ER.”

Pamela Voorhees initially appeared in the first “Friday the 13th” movie in 1980 and was portrayed by Betsy Palmer. A cook at Camp Crystal Lake, Pamela worked at the camp the year that her son drowned.

Today’s unfortunately the day to say goodbye for fans of Gun Interactive’s Friday The 13th: The Game. As we learned last year, Gun Interactive’s license for the asymmetrical multiplayer game expired last year, and tonight, the Friday The 13th: The Game‘s servers are being sunset. Meaning, today’s your final chance to play the game online.

There’s still no word on if players will be able to play the game’s multiplayer mode offline.

This obviously adds salt to the wound for fans, as the years-long dispute between director Sean Cunningham and Friday the 13th (1980) writer Victor Miller prevented Gun Interactive from adding any more content to Friday The 13th: The Game, most notably Uber Jason from Jason X. Fans had tried the do-it-yourself approach with a fan mod, but that was hit with a cease and desist from Horror Inc. not long after it was revealed.

Crystal Lake showrunner gives a small update on the Friday the 13th TV series
Image
On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that original Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller – fresh off winning the U.S. copyright to the 1980 film after a lawsuit that stretched on for years – was teaming up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian, production company A24, the Peacock streaming service, and showrunner Bryan Fuller (whose credits include Hannibal and Pushing Daisies) to develop a new Friday the 13th streaming series called Crystal Lake. Things were moving ahead at a good pace, filming was expected to begin this July, but then the project hit a speed bump at the end of April with the firing of Fuller and his frequent collaborator Jim Danger Gray. Things got back on track in late August with the hiring of a new showrunner – and that person is Brad Caleb Kane, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry,...

Jason Voorhees' Father Never Appears in the Movies - But He Does in a Friday the 13th Crossover with Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Image
In an epic horror franchise comic book crossover, the father of Jason Voorhees managed to make his Friday the 13th debut without anyone noticing. One longstanding question on every Friday the 13th fan's mind has been this: what happened to Jason's father? Jason's mother, Pamela, has a domineering presence throughout the franchise, even after she dies, yet his father barely gets mentioned.

Jason vs. Leatherface #2 written by Nancy Collins, with art by David Imhoff finally provided an answer, as Elias, the father of Jason Voorhees, makes his debut. While the exact place in continuity of this crossover is questionable especially when it misnames Jason's mother as "Doris" it's the closest fans get to canonizing Elias Voorhees.

At the very least, the character's role in the crossover provides some additional context for how he might appear in future Friday the 13th film installments.

The Tremors rights are back in the hands of Stampede Entertainment
Image

Is the Original “Friday the 13th” Movie Based on a True Story?
Image
Superstitions and beliefs whether true or not run down for generations and turn into scariest phenomena. One such is about Friday the 13th which started centuries and decades ago and has now created a frenzy among people. The day is often combined with bad luck and misfortunes: rotten number 13 with Friday,

This superstition became more popular after a movie about the same was created. It was in 1980, just before summer, that a film by Victor Miller and Sean Cunningham was released that would change the history of horror forever.

Considered a classic in horror and slasher genres, Friday the 13th’s popularity has led to the making of many more films in this series, and has turned Camp Crystal Lake into the most dangerous site in the United States.

But years after the release of the film, have you wondered whether or not the film is based on a true story?...

Freddy vs. Jason is Slashing Up HBO Chart After Streaming on Max
Image
Many movies have been called out for focusing too much on fan service over pleasing a general audience. That was not really a complaint that any A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th fan should have had when Freddy vs. Jason finally became a reality in 2003. While it received a mixed bag of reviews from both critics and audiences, the films recent leap into the HBO movie chart has proven that you really cant keep a good movie maniac down.

Freddy vs. Jason is one of many horror titles added to Max last week in the build up to Halloween, and fans have been very quick to reacquaint themselves with the horror mashup that pitted two cinematic icons against each other long before anyone believed Godzilla v. Kong was ever a possibility. The film has bobbled around the Top Ten for the best part of a week since it dropped in the U.

Friday the 13th director has hope for the franchise's future: 'There's more to come'
Image
It might have been 15 years and counting since we last saw a live-action version of Jason Voorhees on the big screen—in the 2009 remake—but that doesn't mean the Friday the 13th universe is dying off anytime soon. Just like its iconic villain, it's really hard to kill off a popular horror franchise for good.

This past weekend, the original director and producer Sean S. Cunningham attended a convention in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he spoke about the franchise and his hopes for its future, and Bloody Disgusting got the scoop. Cunningham directed the 1980 movie that started it all alongside writer Victor Miller and he's remained part of the franchise over the years in a producing capacity.

Friday the 13th fans have repeatedly been put through the wringer due to a combination of factors, primarily a lengthy legal dispute over the rights to the franchise, which has prevented more movies from being made.

Sean S. Cunningham Regrets Not Filming Pee-Wee Hockey Scene in His Long-Forgotten Scrapped Friday the 13th Show
Image
The Friday the 13th (1980) franchise has had a tumultuous time for more that decade, with legal battles preventing any new movies or shows being made. While that seems to be coming to an end, the director of the original 1980 movie, Sean S. Cunningham has been remembering one of the Jason kills he never got to shoot when his own attempts at a TV show collapsed.

Currently, A24 and Peacock are teaming up to bring Friday the 13th to the small screen with Crystal Lake, although even that has been proving problematic in its own way. However, long before that show was given the green light, Cunningham worked on his own TV series, but that project was cut short, as the director recently explained at Silver Scream Con (via Bloody Disgusting).

Some time ago, the rights expired on the original script, so then there became doubt about who owns what after 35 years.

Mike Flanagan Mourns Bryan Fuller’s ‘Crystal Lake’ Series After Brad Caleb Kane Takes Over
Image
As another Friday the 13th came and went, Mike Flanagan shared some bittersweet camp memories.

The Life of Chuck director shared praise for Bryan Fuller‘s version of the Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake, from Peacock and A24, after the project found a new showrunner in Brad Caleb Kane.

“On this Friday the 13th, can’t help but to reflect on the Crystal Lake series that almost was,” wrote Flanagan on X. “@BryanFuller was onto something terrific. Will just wait with bated breath for his excellent Dust Bunny…”

Fuller, who also created Pushing Daisies an Hannibal, previously announced his departure in May after Peacock gave Crystal Lake a straight-to-series order in 2022 with Fuller as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” he wrote at the time. “We hope the final product will be something...

How to Watch the 'Friday the 13th' Movies in Order
Image
Ever since Halloween had its huge box office success in 1978, Victor Miller, the creator of the Friday the 13th franchise, wanted to make his mark in the 80s slasher genre of horror movies. As a result, he created Jason Voorhees. Similar to Michael, this silent killer hides behind an iconic mask while he stalks and brutally murders teenagers. Based on how casually both killers walk after their fleeing victims, their calmness can almost be compared to the likes of Hannibal Lecter or any other apex predator type of killer, with Jasons pulse never going above 85.

Bryan Fuller's Scripts for Scrapped Friday the 13th Series Were 'Among the Best' This Director Ever Read
Image
With today being Friday the 13th, fans are rewatching their favorite entries in the iconic horror movie franchise to celebrate the day. While some relive the past, others lament the many lost projects that didn't make it to screens. One recent scrapped project is Bryan Fuller's Friday the 13th prequel series Crystal Lake. Unfortunately for those already disappointed that the series was abandoned, one horror movie director has made things worse by calling the scripts for the series some of the best he had ever read.

Director Vincenzo Natali, best known for his work on films like The Cell and Splice, took to X/Twitter to share a little tease about Fuller's Crystal Lake series.. He also said, "The scripts for the first two episodes remain among the best I have ever read for any show." Natali has collaborated with Fuller before, directing five episodes of Hannibal and one for American Gods,...

Peacock's Friday The 13th Prequel Series Has A New Showrunner, And It's... The Voice Of Aladdin?
Image
For many years, A24 has been attempting to adapt the long-running slasher film series "Friday the 13th" into a prequel TV series called "Crystal Lake." For a few promising moments, Bryan Fuller was set to be the showrunner, but like so many Fuller projects, he eventually parted ways with the project over creative differences. This was in addition to the continued legal woes surrounding the "Friday the 13th" movies, leaving director/producer Sean Cunningham butting heads with original "Friday the 13th" screenwriter Victor Miller as to who owns the rights to the 1980 hit.

Charlize Theron was once eyed to star in "Crystal Lake" as Jason Voorhees' mom, Pamela Voorhees, but that may no longer be the case now that the series has undergone some reworking in the wake of Fuller's departure. That reworking may finally be in full swing once again, as, according to a new report from Variety, Brad Caleb Kane...

Friday the 13th Prequel Series Finds New Showrunner Following Bryan Fuller's Exit
Image
A24's Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake, is back on track. Brad Caleb Kane has assumed the reins of the hotly-anticipated horror series following Bryan Fuller's exit in May 2024.

Per Deadline, Kane will serve as the creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer of Crystal Lake. "From the moment I watched Jason Voorhees squeeze a guys eyeball out of its socket (in glorious 3D!) at the tender age of 8 years old, I knew my creative path was someday destined to converge with The Man Behind The Mask," said Kane in a statement. "Nothing defined my childhood more than growing up in the golden age of the slasher flick, and nothings defined the genre more than Friday The 13th. I couldnt be more excited for the opportunity to contribute a chapter to this iconic franchise, particularly with such fearless partners as Peacock and A24."

A24’s “Crystal Lake” Lands New Showrunner for ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel TV Series
Image
Plans for A24 and Peacock’s planned Friday the 13th television series “Crystal Lake” derailed earlier this year, with showrunner Bryan Fuller‘s (“Hannibal”) departure leaving the project in limbo. Deadline reports that the project is back on track, enlisting Brad Caleb Kane (It: Welcome to Derry) as the new showrunner.

Kane will serve as the series’ creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer.

To refresh your memory, Peacock had given the project a straight-to-series order in 2022, with “Crystal Lake” being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise featuring both Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela. Additionally, Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) and Kimberly Peirce (Boys Don’t Cry, Carrie) were set to direct episodes, with the budget ballooning to around $10 million per episode. With eight episodes in total planned for the first season, it would’ve cost A24 roughly $85 million to bring the series to life, with...

Peacock’s ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series Names Brad Caleb Kane as New Showrunner

Peacock’s “Friday the 13th” prequel series has found a new showrunner in Brad Caleb Kane.

Kane, who serves as coshowrunner on “It” prequel series “Welcome to Derry,” will serve as the new creator, showrunner and executive producer for “Crystal Lake.” He replaces former showrunner and original series creator Bryan Fuller, who previously created series like “Pushing Daisies,” “American Gods,” “Hannibal” and “Star Trek: Discovery.”

Produced by A24, the drama series is based on the horror franchise and is set in the immediate aftermath of the drowning of a young Jason Voorhees. It was originally set to be helmed by Fuller and coshowrunner Jim Danger Gray, though Fuller was fired from the project in May. ‘Friday the 13th’ Prequel Series at Peacock Taps Brad Caleb Kane as New Showrunner
Image
The “Friday the 13th” prequel series “Crystal Lake” has brought on Brad Caleb Kane as the new creator, showrunner, and executive producer.

The show hails from A24 and was ordered to series at Peacock in 2022. Kane’s hiring comes roughly three months after the original series creator, Bryan Fuller, was fired from the project.

No plot details are available for the series, but in the original 1980 film, Jason Voorhees is a child who drowns at Camp Crystal Lake. His death leads his mother Pamela to seek revenge against the counselors she blamed for her son’s death. Jason then became the antagonist beginning with the second film in the franchise.
