- Mike McAlary was born on December 15, 1957. He was a writer and actor, known for City by the Sea (2002), The Paper (1994) and New York News (1995). He died on December 25, 1998.
- 'The Wood,' a play based on his life written by Dan Klores, opened at Manhattan's Rattlesnake Playwrights Theatre in August, 2011.
- McAlary won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting of New York City's Abner Louima police-assault scandal in 1997. He would die a year later of colon cancer at age 41, after having earlier survived a car crash and coma and his own scandal of journalism ethics.
