Hollywood Shuffle, the 1987 satire co-written, produced and directed by and starring Robert Townsend, was a comedic poke in the eye of Hollywood for its stereotyping of Black actors. With a budget of 100,000, the pic opened to critical acclaim and pulled in 5.2 million at the box office. It featured a series of vignettes and fantasies that Garrett wove into a film that inspired the Washington Post to write that it’s technical proficiency “should thoroughly embarrass those studios.”

Editor’s Note: As we saw last weekend from Deadline’s coverage of Jay Baker losing his position as longtime CAA agent after sending manager Jewerl Keats Ross a Menace II Society movie clip depicting a crack addict willing to perform a sexual favor because he was so desperate to feed his habit, we are in a moment of heightened sensitivity that leaves everyone in Hollywood standing upon a trap door that can be triggered by a single insult or misdeed. We aired all sides of the story, from the email that an offended Ross sent to Baker in response to the clip (which prompted CAA to fire him) to a strong apology by Baker for being tone deaf in sending that clip in the first place. We at Deadline thought we were done with the story, until we got a note from Dwayne Barnes, the actor who played that role.

Olympic swimmer and perennial headline-maker Ryan Lochte is attempting to trademark his catchphrase "Jeah."
"It means, like, almost, like, everything," Lochte said, trying to explain the word's meaning in a 2009 YouTube video. "Like happy. Like, if you have a good swim, you say, 'Jeah.' Like, it's good. So, I guess ... it means good."
According to papers filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier in August, Lochte wants to reserve the phrase, for items such as sunglasses, workout DVDs, jewelry, mugs and water bottles, T-shirts, and a whole host of other clothing and collectible items.
Lochte, who rocketed to stardom this summer with five Olympic medals, quickly made a name for himself outside the pool for his odd fashion choices and rumors surrounding his love life.
It is becoming more and more common for professional athletes to attempt to trademark unique aspects of themselves for the purpose of merchandising.

Miles Davis' legendary bass player Michael Henderson is taking Snoop Dogg to court after accusing the rapper of illegally sampling one of his songs. The "Drop It Like It's Hot" hitmaker is alleged to have used parts of Henderson's "Riding" on the track "Flashbacks", which featured on a 2008 mixtape.
Henderson claims Snoop Dogg went on to unlawfully incorporate his music on another song, titled "Hands on the Wheel", which was allegedly used to boost interest and ticket sales in the rap superstar's West Fest tour in June, 2008. Warzone's members, Goldie Loc, Kam and Mc Eiht, have been named in the copyright infringement lawsuit, along with Snoop and his bosses at Universal Records.
Henderson is also suing for unfair competition and unjust enrichment. He wants the case to be heard in a trial by jury in Michigan and is seeking unspecified damages, reports AllHipHop.

"Urban" cinema tends to mean black cinema or cinema reflecting a "Ghetto" experience often from a youthful perspective. So I will that as a rough guide and then narrowing it down to crime related and violent features I'm going to look at some of the best from this "Genre", if it can really be called a genre.
1. La Haine (1995) Directed by Mathieu Kassovitz
La Haine is arguably the best "Urban" film ever made, certainly the most politically charged and the one with the most impacting ending. French Jewish director Mathieu Kassovitz may have gone on to make the crappy Gothica, but in 1995 he made the best film of the year. So the top film on my list is not American as you would expect, but French. In fact as far as I am aware, a decade after its release the film which took won best director and was nominated for...
