When Lifetime asked iconic indie filmmaker Allison Anders to direct the network’s “Beaches” remake, the director found herself in an interesting position: She’d never seen Garry Marshall’s 1988 melodrama.
“In fact, I can say this to IndieWire — I was like, ‘Well fuck no, I haven’t seen “Beaches.” That’s everything my generation of filmmakers was against,'” Anders said.

Nonetheless, she decided to check out the original, and found herself deeply surprised by Marshall’s depiction of the decades-long bond between Cc (Idina Menzel in the remake, originally played by Bette Midler) and Hillary (Nia Long in the remake, originally played by Barbara Hershey). “I feel like the messiness is what was appealing to me, and that they endure through that messiness,” Anders said. “I mean, that’s the key, the endurance of the friendship.

On Friday, 9/21, we hit the 2012 Eyegore Awards held at Universal Studios Hollywood, CA, and brought back some ocular candy from the carpet and interviews with several of the night’s principals.
Paying respect to some of horror’s most venerated players and notable newcomers, the event was hosted by Syfy’s ‘FaceOff’ host McKenzie Westmore and attended by celebrity presenter and rock legend Alice Cooper, who together bestowed Eyegore Awards to recipients Chad Michael Murray (House of Wax and the upcoming The Haunting in Georgia), Angelica Vale (and her mother Angélica María, who was unable to attend) for their series Mujeres Asesinas 2, Silas Weir Mitchell and Bitsie Tulloch of the television series "Grimm" and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro for, well, being Guillermo del Toro.
Also at the ceremony and on the carpet were Halloween Horror Nights Creative Director John Murdy, The Devil’s Carnival director Darren Lynn Bousman and wife,...

Note: This post contains spoilers for the first three Scream films.
So I watched the Scream trilogy on the recently released Lionsgate Blu-rays over the weekend as I'll be seeing Scream 4 next week. I'm mildly excited to see the new film considering the first Scream was a definite favorite of mine, but if it's anything like the two sequels you can count me out right now.
There are two things the first Scream and its sequel have in common: 1) a ghostface killer and 2) some satisfying one-liners. You could add a third and say the principal cast, but I don't think that's worth mentioning. What the first Scream had that the sequels didn't was a cohesive story, developed characters and a solid ending using all the films strengths to bring everything together.
As I watched Scream over again -- it was probably the first time in about eight or nine...

Back in the days of the old Coming Attractions I had a long-running editorial column called Director's Cut. It allowed me a place to say what was on my mind and what I thought about news or events related to film. Now that CA 2.0 is up and running and I still have access to this mad scientist equipment, I thought why not slap Director's Cut on the operating table, hook it up to the lightning rod and see if I can't bring it back to life? When has that idea ever gone wrong? -- Ps
Ridley Scott is making a new Alien movie and that, my friends, is both a good and a bad thing.
On the surface Scott's involvement in resurrecting the franchise looks like it can only be a positive but once I think about it further, I think that there may be more opportunities for Sir Ridley...

A few months back, a band local to my hometown of Chicago popped up on my radar, and I still don't know how I'd missed them for so long. With a decadent sound reminiscent of Motley Crue and Buckcherry (both of whom they've toured with!) The Last Vegas adds some Windy City-flavor to a a style of rock that sounds right at home on the Sunset Strip of Los Angeles.
Since checking out the April release of their new album Whatever Gets You Off, frontman Chad Cherry and I have been exchanging emails and it turns out he's a 100% certified horror freak and Fango fiend. After a recent exchange in which Chad was flipping through Fangoria #285 while waiting to catch a flight to L.A., it was apparent that it was time for a Tla installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom.
For the uninitiated, Lists is the column where...

Dimension Films has released the second full trailer for Rob Zombie's Halloween II (no longer H2, thankfully) on the InterWebs and it is...well, I'm not quite sure what it is. Quite a bit of new footage is in this clip, and it's difficult to tell if it will add up to anything or not. Watch the clip after the jump. We see quite a few things here. Michael Meyers breaking out of a van. Dr. Loomis (Malcolm McDowell) proclaiming that Mike is D.E.A.D. And a whole lot of messy family insanity, including some guy with a pumpkin on his head. It's almost like this is Rob Zombie's version of Destroy All Monsters, with elements of Friday the 13th (Mike's mommy issues, which we don't see highlighted here as much as in the previous trailer); Halloween, obviously; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (that dinner scene with Pumpkinhead.
