Madonna‘s “Holiday” wasn’t a big hit, but it has a prominent place in our cultural memory. Case in point: one of Jessica Simpson’s songs is a massive rip-off of “Holiday.” Simpson herself discussed the obvious similarities.
Jessica Simpson said taking inspiration from Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ was for the greater good
In the early 1980s, dance music was dominated by a subgenre known as post-disco. It combined elements of traditional disco with synth-pop. Prominent examples of that style include Donna Summer’s “She Works Hard for the Money,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang. Madonna’s self-titled debut album is one of the most famous post-disco albums of all time. Post-disco was not a prominent genre in the 2000s, but Simpson managed to bring it back for one brief moment.
During a 2006 interview with MTV News, Simpson said Madonna’s “Holiday” subconsciously inspired her song “A Public Affair.

Scoop is a dramatized feature about the BBC’s Newsnight team scoring a sensationally revealing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. For a film about a journalistic exclusive, it has the most generic title possible. There are already at least four other movies out there called Scoop, including a rubbishy 2006 Woody Allen film and a 1987 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s peerless 1938 satirical novel, a twofer satire of both the press and the British aristocracy.
Sadly, this latest Scoop has none of Waugh’s acid wit or alkaline intelligence. Although serviceable as a retread of the events that led up to the royal interview conducted by Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis (impersonated here by Gillian Anderson), an interview recreated for big chunks of the running time, it doesn’t significantly deepen or enrich our understanding of the personalities involved — let alone journalism, privilege, sexual exploitation or the price of fish.

Cinema history is full of missed opportunities. For example, a Beatles movie almost featured David Bowie as a character from a Beatles song. Instead, a famous comedian got the role. A member of the film’s cast revealed what she thought about this development.
David Bowie almost played Mr. Kite in a Beatles movie
Across the Universe is a Fab Four jukebox musical set in a heightened version of the 1960s. Several characters in the movie are named after figures from Beatles songs, including Jude, Lucy, Maxwell, Sexy Sadie, and Mr. Kite.
During a 2018 interview with Vulture, director Julie Taymor discussed the role of Mr. Kite. “We rehearsed it like a normal musical in theater … and it bonded everybody,” he said. “I’ll never forget [star] Evan [Rachel Wood] walking in the hallways with this Bowie T-shirt, because at one point we’d asked David Bowie if he was going to play Mr.

The biggest scoop of the century is pinning the British royal family to a sex trafficking scandal, as relived in Netflix film “Scoop.”
The feature, directed by Philip Martin and based on former “Newsnight” producer Sam McAlister’s memoir “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview,” stars Gillian Anderson as BBC anchor Emily Maitlis, who infamously interviewed a disgraced Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell) about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein in 2019.
“Scoop” is written by Peter Moffatt and Geoff Bussetil, with Billie Piper starring as producer/author McAlister. Keeley Hawes and Romola Garai co-star.
The film debuts on Netflix, following the conclusion of royal family drama “The Crown” in 2023. To note, “Scoop” lead star Anderson appeared on “The Crown” as Margaret Thatcher.
“Scoop” centers on the behind-the-scenes push to land an interview with Prince Andrew after the royal was listed in court papers as part of a U.

Paul McCartney is known for bringing a bit of inspired silliness to his songwriting — after all, one of his most famous his is called “Silly Love Songs!” Paul said he added a joke to The Beatles’ “When I’m Sixty-Four” to make it “funnier.” He said “When I’m Sixty-Four” was inspired by old-school songs he and John Lennon appreciated so much. On the other hand, John said he never could have written “When I’m Sixty-Four.”
Paul McCartney added a line about starving to The Beatles’ ‘When I’m Sixty-Four’ as a joke
During a 2012 interview with The Independent, Paul discussed the concept behind “When I’m Sixty-Four.” “It was about myself, looking to the future,” he recalled. “Retirement age of 65 felt too obvious, so I made it a year earlier.”

Orlando, Fla. — Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost’s (D-Fla.) MadSoul music festival was supposed to be a party for activists — a celebration of Central Florida’s progressive and queer community, in a hostile state. Frost wanted to show how far the community has come and its defiant rejection of Florida’s increasingly right-wing tilt, with a mix of music and community building featuring appearances from indie artists and progressive politicos, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
But the festival would take an unexpected turn near the end, highlighting the mounting tensions between progressive...

In Patty Jenkins' bonkers superhero sequel "Wonder Woman 1984," a smarmy yuppie named Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) has discovered an ancient wishing stone that can grant him one wish, but only in exchange for something valuable to him. Maxwell, rather than making a wish, gets clever, wishing to absorb the powers of the stone, and become a wishing object himself. When someone touches him and makes a wish, he has the power to grant it, but can now make vocal demands in exchange. He essentially wishes for more wishes.
A mousy nerd named Barbara Minvera (Kristen Wiig), who works with Wonder Woman's secret identity Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), clearly has a crush on her, coveting Diana's assured demeanor. Barbara also has a chance to make a wish on the wishing stone and wishes to be more like Diana, not knowing that Diana is an immortal demigoddess with superpowers. Barbara's superpowers,...

Exclusive: Michael MacMillan retired from the world of television 17 years ago. Except, he didn’t.
The Canadian film and TV producer and business exec had made his name as CEO and Chairman of Alliance Atlantis, the company that built the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation franchise into a worldwide phenomenon, before its broadcast unit was sold off in 2007 to Canwest Communications and Goldman Sachs — making a lot of cash and taking a well-earned early retirement.
However, just four years later, he was back to do it all again.
MacMillan launched Blue Ant Media in 2011, originally as a Canadian channel operator, much the same as Alliance Atlantis had operated. However, just like his previous company, network ownership was only a means to an end — owning content was always the real play.
In the 13 years that have followed, Blue Ant has transformed from a channel operator to a content company playing in the international rights ownership game,...

In 1982, anthropologist Wade Davis traveled to Haiti on a mission: to investigate documented cases of zombiism, specifically cases of people who had been declared dead but who then miraculously came back to life. Davis immersed himself in the very real world of Haitian voodoo, witnessing an array of unbelievable rituals and fascinating rites, prompting him to write the book The Serpent and the Rainbow, which would go on to become a bestseller. Referred to in certain circles as a sort of real life Indiana Jones, Davis’ profile rose and, of course, Hollywood came calling, hoping his tales of voodoo and mystery might translate into a spectacular big screen adventure. Davis was wary of Hollywood and worried the adaptation of his book would bastardize his accounts, but hoped if the right people were involved, his story would be given a respectable treatment. As is often the case in the City of Angels,...

Pamela Salem, who portrayed Miss Moneypenny in the non-Eon James Bond movie Never Say Never Again, has passed away at the age of 80.
While Pamela Salem’s turn as Moneypenny was a one-off – and in a film that is widely not considered part of the 007 canon – her go at the beloved character can’t be ignored. Interestingly, despite how frequently the character appears in the Bond universe, she has only been played by a small selection of actresses: Lois Maxwell, Caroline Bliss, Samantha Bond, and Naomie Harris. But only Salem has the distinction of playing Miss Moneypenny just one time.
But not once was there any strange bad blood between Pamela Salem or her predecessors, particularly Maxwell. As per a 1984 interview (via The Hollywood Reporter), Salem said, “I had seen Moneypenny before, of course, in the earlier films played by Lois Maxwell…At first [the media] tried to stir things up between...

Former President Bill Clinton allegedly warned Vanity Fair not to publish articles regarding the sex-trafficking allegations against “his good friend” Jeffrey Epstein. Clinton reportedly stormed into their newsroom and began to “threaten” them.
According to the newly unsealed court documents, Virginia Giuffre, an Epstein accuser, mentioned Clinton in a 2011 email exchange with Sharon Churcher, a journalist in the Daily Mail.
The emails exchanged were advice given to Giuffre on whether she should do an interview and sell a photo to the publication. Churcher even offered to help her get a book deal back then.
“When I was doing some research into [Vanity Fair] yesterday, it does concern me what they could want to write about me considering that B. Clinton walked into Vf and threatened them not to write sex-trafficking articles about his good friend J.E.,” Giuffre wrote in an email.

Jessica Simpson is paying homage to one of the most iconic moments of her career – her Newlyweds tuna scene.
The 43-year-old hitmaker and author partnered with Chicken of the Sea to film a new commercial that referenced the moment when she was confused by the brand’s slogan – which refers to tuna as “the chicken of the sea” – during her reality series with ex Nick Lachey.
More than two decades after the scene first was released, Jessica teamed up with her daughter Maxwell to poke some fun at it in a cute ad.
Head inside to watch the commercial…
In the commercial, Jessica is sitting on the couch snacking on a packet of the tuna. Her daughter wants to know what she’s eating.
“It’s called Chicken of the Sea, but it’s not really chicken: It’s tuna,” Jessica responded, adding, “So don’t get confused by it.

Hundreds of pages of sealed records related to Jeffrey Epstein have been made public over the past week, revealing previously unknown details about the late accused sex trafficker who called some of the world’s most wealthy and influential people his friends, from Bill Clinton to Prince Andrew.
The release comes after a judge’s December ruling that the documents, which until Wednesday had been redacted, should no longer be concealed from the public. Previously, the documents had been part of Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre’s 2015 civil case against Ghislaine Maxwell.

One of the alleged victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein claimed she had sex multiple times with former CEO of Victoria’s Secret Les Wexner, according to documents released on Tuesday.
The damning claim stems from a 2015 civil case against Ghislaine Maxwell by Virginia Giuffre as hundreds of court documents describing the alleged criminal activities of Epstein began to be released to the public last week.
Wexner, who was named in the previously sealed court records among many of Epstein’s long-rumored powerful friends, was accused of having sex with Giuffre “multiple” times.

The Beatles weren’t civil rights activists, but a soul singer said the group’s success was “a civil rights breakthrough.” He wasn’t the only one to say something like that. Here’s a look at how Black singers inspired the Fab Four.
A singer said The Beatles and Elvis Presley moved helped the civil rights movement
Maxwell is a neo-soul singer known for tunes such as “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Sumthin’ Sumthin,” and “Lake by the Ocean.” His music doesn’t sound much like The Beatles’. However, Maxwell works in a musical idiom that paved the way for the Fab Four.
During a 2017 interview with The San Diego Union-Tribune, Maxwell discussed the issue of The Beatles and cultural appropriation. “It’s a very touchy subject,” he said. “Because it’s like it was appropriation, but there was a certain window that was opened that never would have...

Court filings containing more than 100 contact names linked to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were unsealed on Wednesday afternoon.
Over 900 pages of partially censored documents were released.
A great deal of the information has already been reported. Many of the people whose names were mentioned have not been accused of any misdeed.
The documents include a list of 185 people labeled anonymously as John or Jane Doe, beginning with J. Doe #3 and ending with J. Doe #187. Some of the names are mentioned twice.
A small number of people on the list are minors or sexual assault victims. The judge clarified that those names will not be revealed.
It was mentioned in the court record that the documents for the people in the 107th and 110th slots on the list will not be released right away. One had been given an extension until January 22 for her appeal regarding the release.

In what is expected to be a series of releases over the next several weeks, the names of a couple of former presidents and dozens more were revealed Wednesday as associates of sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
Among the more than 180 individuals named in 943 pages of unsealed court documents, which saw the federal court website crash for a while as the names become public, were Donald Trump and Bill Clinton. The numerous references to the men, as well as Britain’s Prince Andrew, were unsurprising. To varying degrees, Trump and Clinton had long been publicly known to be associated with Epstein over the past decades.

Jimmy Kimmel is clapping back at Aaron Rodgers after the NFL quarterback suggested his name could be on a list of people connected to the late, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
During a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, the New York Jets player said, “There’s a lot of people, including Jimmy Kimmel, who are really hoping [the list] doesn’t come out. … I’ll tell you what, if that list comes out, I’ll definitely will be popping some sort of bottle.”
Nearly 200 names connected to Epstein, including associates, former employees of his and Ghislaine Maxwell, or people who had flown on his planes, reportedly could be released by a New York judge soon. So far, the names in court documents have only been known as John and Jane Does.
Following Rodgers’ comments, the host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! took to X (formerly Twitter), threatening to take him to court.

Amp Fiddler, a keyboardist for George Clinton’s pioneering funk collective Parliament-Funkadelic and mentor to late Detroit producer J Dilla, has died. He was 65 years old.
The funk and soul musician had been recovering from a 2022 surgery for an undisclosed illness. A GoFundMe campaign launched last year raised more than $75,000 for Fiddler’s “continued healing as he journeys back to the stage,” and a benefit concert was held in his hometown of Detroit earlier this month to further cover medical expenses.
“Rest in eternal musical excellence Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Joseph Anthony “Amp” Fiddler,” Parliament-Funkadelic wrote on Facebook. “Fly on Amp! We love you dearly!”
Questlove paid tribute to Fiddler on Instagram, writing, “Rest easy brother Amp. For all those talks during the Pfunk tour. For all the music. Especially of course mentoring the one who mentored us (Dilla) — thank you brother.”

Robert Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, had a close relationship with notorious convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Kennedy reportedly had access to Epstein’s Manhattan office in 1993 and even socialized with him at The Pierre Hotel.
Kennedy admitted to two past trips on Epstein’s private plane and claimed that one was to Florida and the other for a “fossil hunting” expedition in South Dakota.
He stated that he never traveled alone on Epstein’s jet and always accompanied his wife and children.
However, discrepancies have been found in Kennedy’s account when it is compared to the description of his relationship with Epstein provided by longtime family friend Christina Oxenberg.

Back in September, Shopify put out a call: It would give up its ad slot in one upcoming MrBeast video to a small business that could use the exposure.
That small business ended up being Kanga Coolers.
“Kanga Coolers started as a project for an entrepreneurship class at Clemson University in South Carolina. It could have stopped there, but the founders didn’t give up on their idea,” Shopify–a longtime partner of MrBeast–wrote in a LinkedIn post.
It added that “So many” businesses responded to its giveaway, but Kanga was the one that “came out on top.”
Kanga Coolers was invented by classmates Logan Lamance, Austin Maxwell, and Ryan Frazier in 2017. The three were tired of warm beer, so invented a soft case that fits around a small case of beer and, they say, keeps it cold for up to seven hours without the use of ice.
