Mary-Louise Parker‘s reunion with NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt is now official as the former Weeds star has closed a deal to topline NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot Feed Me. The project, from veteran producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas, received a pilot green light last month based on Parker’s intention to star in it. Following the end of Weeds, which Greenblatt put on the air while running Showtime, NBC had been pursing the actress for multiple projects, and Feed Me was the script she responded to. Talks with Parker had already commenced when Feed Me was picked up to pilot three weeks ago, now they have been successfully completed. Written by Sally Robinson, who penned Lifetime’s successful Steel Magnolias remake, Feed Me is described as a comedic exploration of adult intimacy and desire that centers on a dysfunctional family bound by love and the restaurant they run together.

Updated: NBC has given a late pilot order to Feed Me, a single-camera comedy from veteran producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas’ Witt/Thomas Prods (Blossom, Beauty And The Beast and its CW reboot, The Practice). NBC had been pursuing former Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker for multiple pilots. This is the script she responded to, helping it get a green light while the actress’ deal is being worked out. Feed Me would reunite Parker with NBC topper Bob Greenblatt who cast her in another dark comedy, Weeds, while at Showtime. Written by Sally Robinson, who penned Lifetime’s hugely successful Steel Magnolia remake, Feed Me is described as a comedic exploration of adult intimacy and desire that centers on a dysfunctional family bound by love and the restaurant they run together. And when daughter Emma’s husband has an affair, they circle the wagons to fiercely protect one of their own.

I don't dismiss the value of remakes out of hand. I don't declare them to be the end of civilization as we know it (as some are inclined to do) or screech endlessly about Hollywood's lack of creativity.
After all, there are numerous examples of remakes that found fresh, compelling things to say with once or even oft told material. From Martin Scorsese's Cape Fear to Baz Luhrmann's take on Romeo + Juliet to last years' Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, successful remakes bring an unusual perspective to characters we thought we knew or become enlivened by lifting something hidden in the subtext and transporting it to the fore with purpose and storytelling urgency.
So when it was announced that Lifetime TV would remake the much-loved and admired Steel Magnolias, this time with super producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan (Chicago, Hairspray) at the helm and an all-African-American cast (including...

When Lifetime announced its plan to remake the 1989 cult classic Steel Magnolias, the internet's collective groan was stopped short by the list of names attached to the project: Queen Latifah, Phylicia Rashad, Alfre Woodard, Jill Scott. Female-centric films focused on a group of women over the age of 40 are practically extinct in Hollywood these days. Toss in an all-African-American cast, and you're approaching mythological unicorn territory. So I'm happy to report that while the updated version of the southern classic isn't quite as magical as the original, it is a warm, sentimental, whole-box-of-Kleenex emotion-fest of deep-fried proportions.

By John Crook The jury may be out as to whether the world really needed a remake of Steel Magnolias, the hit Robert Harling stage comedy that became an all-star 1989 film with Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine and Dolly Parton, among others. We now have one, however, thanks to Lifetime. And it’s a beauty. With Harling’s blessing, Sally Robinson has discreetly updated his play and screenplay for this remake, in which all of the principal characters are played by black actresses, led by Queen Latifah in Field’s former role of M’Lynn.
