He wrote and directed the Sissi trilogy - Sissi (1955), Sissi - The Young Empress (1956) and Sissi - Schicksalsjahre einer Kaiserin (1957) with the till then unknown Romy Schneider. The films were based on the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.

Only few are also aware of his work as a songtext writer - especially in the 30's.
After a longer interruption as a director Ernst Marischka wrote numerous scripts in the 30's and took part in popular movies.
He achieved another great success in his career in 1945 when he was nominated for an Oscar for his script "A Song to Remember" (1945).
