The first season of Private Affairs was crowned Podcast of the Year and Best Fiction Podcast at the 2021 Australian Podcast Awards. Christine “Kix” Mwaturura, who was the 2022 Jesse Cox Audio Fellow, is the show’s creator, writer, director and producer.

The Casting Guild of Australia (Cga) has named its ten ‘Rising Stars’ for 2020: Luca Sardelis, Lily Sullivan, Yazeed Daher, Sophie Wilde, Ayesha Madon, Patrick Jhanur, Daniel Monks, Ratidzo Mambo, Thomas Weatherall and Bridie McKim.
It’s the sixth year the guild has compiled the list, which has previously identified talent such as Eliza Scanlan, Katherine Langford, Tilda Cobham-Harvey, Geraldine Viswanathan and Alexander England.
Cga President David Newman said: “Each year all Cga members nominate and then vote for 10 emerging artists they see as Rising Stars, those who we believe are most likely to cut through at an international level.
“In 2020, these actors have gone from all work stopping, thinking they may never work again to now being presented as some of the most promising of their generation – what a roller coaster! Alexandra Keddie, Drew Weston and Gemma Bird Matheson in ‘The Housemate.’
Frustrated with the scarcity of job offers, two years ago young actors Gemma Bird Matheson and Alexandra Keddie decided to launch their own production company, Chips & Gravy Films.
Their maiden production was The Housemate, an affectionate take on The Bachelor. They spent several thousand dollars of their own money to make a 4-minute teaser, in which they played friends who are searching for the housemate of their dreams, posted it online and got 260,000 views in the first week.
So they sent the teaser to Rick Kalowski, then the ABC’s head of comedy, who called them within 30 minutes and quickly commissioned a series of 6 x 5′ episodes for iview.
Since then the duo have created four or five projects which are in development with Screen Australia, while Matheson also performs in plays (currently the Griffin Theatre Company’s Superheroes...

Francis Annan, Daniel Webber and Daniel Radcliffe on the set of Escape From Pretoria Photo: courtesy of Signature Entertainment
A little over three decades ago, I played my small part in the battle against Apartheid in South Africa, encouraging the boycott of South African fruit that activists in that country had requested of those living elsewhere in the world. Looking back, it seems more absurd than ever that such injustice should have been permitted to flourish for as long as it did – a whole country with a legal system built upon the premise that one group of people were categorically inferior to another because of their ethnicity, and brazenly, brutally so, even in the late 20th Century. Escape From Pretoria, the new film from Francis Annan, carries us back to that time and celebrates the people who fought for change in far more extreme circumstances than mine simply because they...

"This is how we fight!" Momentum Pictures has released a new official Us trailer for the true story thriller Escape from Pretoria, opening in March (on VOD) at the same time as the UK release. The film is about two white South Africans, imprisoned in 1978 for working covert operations for Nelson Mandela's banned Anc. They attempt to escape from the notorious white man's Pretoria Prison, known as "Robben Island", the same place former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela was imprisoned before. Starring Daniel Radcliffe and Daniel Webber as the two leads, with a cast including Ian Hart, Nathan Page, Stephen Hunter, Mark Leonard Winter, Jeanette Cronin, David Wilson, and Ratidzo Mambo. Based on a true story, of course. This looks as good as it did in the UK trailer, a gripping thriller with an inspiring story. Zenia Starr in ‘The End’ (Photo credit: Foxtel).
Zenia Starr made her screen debut in Mark Grentell’s 2013 cricket comedy Backyard Ashes but this year has been the first when she has worked virtually non-stop.
The Indian-born, Australian-raised actor modestly credits that to a number of factors including audiences’ growing appetite to see diversity on screens and those producers and directors who were willing to take a risk in hiring her.
Equally graciously she also thanks her agent, Catherine Poulton Management, luck and “maybe some divine intervention.”
After a string of roles in the ABC’s The Unlisted, the second series of Seven Network’s Drop Dead Weird, Stan’s upcoming The Gloaming, Foxtel’s The End and Maziar Lahooti’s debut feature Below, she says: “It’s the most momentum I’ve ever had.”

Ratidzo Mambo.
Last year Ratidzo Mambo figured she wasn’t being offered the type of roles she wanted and so she made a pivotal decision.
The Zimbabwean-born actor and former sales agent and distribution consultant resolved to take her fate into her own hands by becoming a creative producer, developing her own TV and film projects.
“I’ve had to learn how to multi-task because acting jobs are scarce and the types of roles I want to do are seldom offered to me,” Rati tells If via Skype from Bali, where she is finishing the bibles and treatments for a bunch of projects.
“Rather than blame people or live in a space of negativity, I have to take accountability. I have a lot to say and I am a storyteller as well.”

This looks like a solid prison escape thriller, about insistent prisoners who want out as a way of fighting back. Have a look.
